Principal’s Message
Welcome back to another very busy term! I am looking forward
to many exciting events we have on this term.
Over the school holidays, we completed the construction of
the new early childhood playground and shade shelter for the
Year One playground. The staff and students have been very
excited about the new playground. I have enjoyed watching the
students playing on the playground and observing the positive
community reaction. The popularity of nature play equipment
has exploded with recent research indicating that natural play
settings can positively influence children’s behaviour and their
development in terms of mental health, social and emotional
relationships and provide stimulating, sensory experiences.
Installing natural materials and other landscape elements to
children's outdoor play yards leads to changes in children's
spatial cognitive awareness.
I am hoping that we may be able to construct another
playground in the future for our primary school students. With
this in mind, it brings me to reminding parents that we are
endeavouring to relaunch the Butler P & C next week on
Wednesday, October 21, by holding a meeting and light supper
at 6.30pm in the staffroom. I am very hopeful that attendance
will be high at this meeting and we can discuss how the P &
C can move forward in 2016. Thank you to all the parents that
have acknowledged they will be attending. I look forward to
seeing you on the night.
I visited our Year 6 staff and students at Ern Halliday Recreation
centre last week, while they were on school camp. I was
impressed with all our students and the excellent behaviour
they displayed at the disco and in completing activities required
of them. Students achieved many of the goals they set for
themselves and were eager to tell me all about the experiences
they have had. It was a real pleasure speaking to them and
joining in with the evening activities. We have some outstanding
dancers at Butler PS. Thank you to all the Year 6 staff, including
Ms Amie Turner, Mr Mark Williams, Mrs Tracy Thompson, Ms
Liz Terry, Ms Amy Marshall and our Deputy Principal, Mrs
Cecilia Smith, for all of their hard work in planning for the camp
and giving up their own time to attend the camp over three
days. It is appreciated by the school community.
This term, we have many other exciting events to look forward
to. The Interschool Athletics Carnival will be held at Quinns
Beach PS this Friday, October 23. I would like to wish all of our
athletes the best and hope they achieve their personal goals.
Constable Care will also be visiting our school in the next
couple of weeks. Students always enjoy these visits and gain
much from the educational messages that are embedded in
the performances. I wish all students, parents and staff an
enjoyable term as we approach the end of the year.
Butler Primary School Principal,
Mrs Therese Gorton

Independent School Review 2015
Early next week, on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th of
October, Butler PS will be participating in an independent
school review. The purpose of the review is to provide
assurance to the school and its community, the Director
General of Education and the Minister for Education on the
1
extent to which the school has met its commitments as outlined
in its Delivery and Performance Agreement (DPA) and
associated Business Plan. The focus of the review is on:
• How well the school has implemented the self-review
• How well the school has improved student learning
for all students
• How well the school has created an environment that
promotes learning and student well-being
• How well the school is placed to sustain and improve
its performance
• The review will be undertaken by Professor Chris
Forlin, Margaret Brede and Tom Campbell. An
agenda has been designed to enable the reviewers
to meet with the administration team, staff, students,
the Butler PS School Board and members of the
P&C. This will be a busy two days and we look
forward to the findings of the school review.
Nature Playground
On our first day back, staff who were engaged in professional
learning managed to escape to our new nature playground
to explore the playground and to celebrate the success of
collaborative planning at Butler Primary School.
Our younger students have enjoyed exploring and using their
imagination to create new games as they interact with their new
nature play environment. Our early childhood teachers are very
excited about the playground improvements and are keen to
incorporate the nature play area in their learning activities.
Thank you to the P& C Association for financially supporting this
initiative.
Year 6 Ern Halliday Camp
Year 6 students and their teachers attended Ern Halliday Camp
in Week One of Term 4. Camp activities are designed to
develop team building skills and for students to face individual
challenges to achieve personal goals in a safe environment.
Students enjoyed a range of activities, including cycling along
our beautiful coastal cycle path, archery, crate stacking, Lost
Pilot, caving, big swing, flying fox, abseiling and climbing big
ropes. They enjoyed eating together and trying food that is
different to home cuisine. Students also enjoyed the challenge
of sleeping in a dorm with other excited students. A disco
evening and a quiz night were also thoroughly enjoyed by our
Year 6 students and their behaviour was outstanding. Some
students were asked about their personal camp highlight:
At camp I enjoyed the caving because we got to push
our limits and overcome our fears and have fun while
doing it –Lauren
At camp I really liked the disco because everyone was
jumping up and down and singing away. I think everyone
had FUN! – Anthony
At camp I liked the big swing because everyone
encouraged each other to go all the way to the top and
it was really fun. –Demi
Camp was awesome! It really satisfied the fact that I liked
the big swing when I did the Superman by pointing out
my fist.-Logan
At camp I loved the game lost pilot because it was
interesting and fun to find all the remnants. - Ashleigh

Presented by internationally recognised researcher, Winthrop
Professor Donna Cross from the Telethon Kids Institute and
University of WA, the seminar will outline practical strategies
that have been developed from twelve years of ongoing
research. The seminar will also include presentations from the
President of the WA School Psychologists Association, Eileen
Kuruckchi, and two young people involved in the Cyber Savvy
research currently being conducted in WA schools.

Parent Parking
To ease congestion and with mornings warming up, it is great
to see that more families are walking their children to and from
school or parking in the community centre car park and walking
their children from there.

Visual Art Room News
In the latter part of Term 3, our students have been working on
art pieces that relate to their classroom studies. The 3 students
have used palette knives, sponges and brushes with acrylic
paint to create 3D landscapes of Antarctica and modelled
plasticine penguins.
Year 6 Multicultural kites in androgynous colours
Out and About at Butler Primary School
Butler’s roving reporter has been exploring our school and
found many busy classrooms this week. Can you spot the
following student activities in the photographs?
Year 3 landscape of Antarctica in 3D
The Year 4 students modelled clay and crafted masts and sails
to create ships of the First Fleet.
• Students in Mrs Julia Chalmers’ Year 3 Cultural
Studies have been exploring popular Indonesian folk
tales, particularly those featuring the Kancil (Mouse
deer). The students have selected a character from
the story and designed a puppet, choosing from the
Harimau (Tiger), Kancil (Mouse Deer) or Kambing
(Goat). They will then be using these puppets to retell
the story in small groups and as a class.
• Mrs Lizzie Saunders’ PP6 Kindy children were
enjoying the beautiful weather, eating their healthy
fruit and vegetable snacks and talking to their friends.
Other Kindy children were using their imagination as
they whipped up a delicious meal in their playground
kitchen.
• Students in Mrs Jill Dodge’s Year 1 class were
excitedly brainstorming some ideas before they
began their fairy tale writing.
• Miss Zoe Goodin’s Year 1 class were busy
concentrating on a read, print and draw activity.
Year 4 Ships of the First Fleet
The Year 5 students expressed the motion of Fire and Flood
first in drawing and then in collage.
• Miss Joanne Turner’s Year 1 class were enjoying a
quick Crunch and Sip break in the morning sunlight.
• Year 4 students were improving their spelling skills by
participating in a Words Their Way word sort with
Miss Kimberley Carlson.
• Ball throwing and catching skills were being practised
on the basketball courts in the Physical Education
lesson taught by Mr Wain Piperis.
• Music students were concentrating on a music test
with Miss Carley Jurgowiak.
• Mrs Karen Rowlinson’s Art students were happily
painting landscapes onto their paper plates. Later,
they plan to weave a section of their artwork.

mental health. In our own classes, we also learned about the
myths and truths about smoking, and conducted an experiment
using straws whilst exercising that simulated what it was like to
exercise with a decreased lung capacity.

Term 4
The students learned about many important preventative health
facts throughout the day and really enjoyed exploring different
aspects of their health. The presenters all commented that our
students were well mannered and they were impressed with the
level of detailed questions asked by our students. Overall, it was
a very successful day.

Chaplain’s Corner
HELLO Everyone,
Welcome to Term 4! I hope you enjoyed a restful holiday and
were able to take a break from your busy schedules.
This term our focus VALUES are:
COMPASSION
SERVICE
GENEROSITY
Compassion is having kind feelings towards others. It is caring
deeply and wanting to help, even if you don’t know the person.
Compassion begins by noticing when someone seems sad or
troubled. Put yourself in their place and ask how you would feel
if it were happening to you. Think about how you can help. Be
a friend when someone needs a friend.
“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and
happier.”
-Mother Teresa
