I am looking forward to many exciting events we have on this term. Over the school holidays, we completed the construction of the new early childhood playground and shade shelter for the Year One playground. The staff and students have been very excited about the new playground. I have enjoyed watching the students playing on the playground and observing the positive community reaction. The popularity of nature play equipment has exploded with recent research indicating that natural play settings can positively influence children’s behaviour and their development in terms of mental health, social and emotional relationships and provide stimulating, sensory experiences. Installing natural materials and other landscape elements to children's outdoor play yards leads to changes in children's spatial cognitive awareness. I am hoping that we may be able to construct another playground in the future for our primary school students. With this in mind, it brings me to reminding parents that we are endeavouring to relaunch the Butler P & C next week on Wednesday, October 21, by holding a meeting and light supper at 6.30pm in the staffroom. I am very hopeful that attendance will be high at this meeting and we can discuss how the P & C can move forward in 2016. Thank you to all the parents that have acknowledged they will be attending. I look forward to seeing you on the night. I visited our Year 6 staff and students at Ern Halliday Recreation centre last week, while they were on school camp. I was impressed with all our students and the excellent behaviour they displayed at the disco and in completing activities required of them. Students achieved many of the goals they set for themselves and were eager to tell me all about the experiences they have had. It was a real pleasure speaking to them and joining in with the evening activities. We have some outstanding dancers at Butler PS. Thank you to all the Year 6 staff, including Ms Amie Turner, Mr Mark Williams, Mrs Tracy Thompson, Ms Liz Terry, Ms Amy Marshall and our Deputy Principal, Mrs Cecilia Smith, for all of their hard work in planning for the camp and giving up their own time to attend the camp over three days. It is appreciated by the school community. This term, we have many other exciting events to look forward to. The Interschool Athletics Carnival will be held at Quinns Beach PS this Friday, October 23. I would like to wish all of our athletes the best and hope they achieve their personal goals. Constable Care will also be visiting our school in the next couple of weeks. Students always enjoy these visits and gain much from the educational messages that are embedded in the performances. I wish all students, parents and staff an enjoyable term as we approach the end of the year. The purpose of the review is to provide assurance to the school and its community, the Director General of Education and the Minister for Education on the 1 extent to which the school has met its commitments as outlined in its Delivery and Performance Agreement (DPA) and associated Business Plan. The focus of the review is on: • How well the school has implemented the self-review • How well the school has improved student learning for all students • How well the school has created an environment that promotes learning and student well-being • How well the school is placed to sustain and improve its performance • The review will be undertaken by Professor Chris Forlin, Margaret Brede and Tom Campbell. An agenda has been designed to enable the reviewers to meet with the administration team, staff, students, the Butler PS School Board and members of the P&C. This will be a busy two days and we look forward to the findings of the school review. Nature Playground On our first day back, staff who were engaged in professional learning managed to escape to our new nature playground to explore the playground and to celebrate the success of collaborative planning at Butler Primary School. Our younger students have enjoyed exploring and using their imagination to create new games as they interact with their new nature play environment. Our early childhood teachers are very excited about the playground improvements and are keen to incorporate the nature play area in their learning activities. Thank you to the P& C Association for financially supporting this initiative. Year 6 Ern Halliday Camp Year 6 students and their teachers attended Ern Halliday Camp in Week One of Term 4. Camp activities are designed to develop team building skills and for students to face individual challenges to achieve personal goals in a safe environment. Students enjoyed a range of activities, including cycling along our beautiful coastal cycle path, archery, crate stacking, Lost Pilot, caving, big swing, flying fox, abseiling and climbing big ropes. They enjoyed eating together and trying food that is different to home cuisine. Students also enjoyed the challenge of sleeping in a dorm with other excited students. A disco evening and a quiz night were also thoroughly enjoyed by our Year 6 students and their behaviour was outstanding. Some students were asked about their personal camp highlight: At camp I enjoyed the caving because we got to push our limits and overcome our fears and have fun while doing it –Lauren At camp I really liked the disco because everyone was jumping up and down and singing away. I think everyone had FUN! – Anthony At camp I liked the big swing because everyone encouraged each other to go all the way to the top and it was really fun. –Demi Camp was awesome! It really satisfied the fact that I liked the big swing when I did the Superman by pointing out my fist.-Logan At camp I loved the game lost pilot because it was interesting and fun to find all the remnants. - Ashleigh Staff and students exploring the nature playground and engaging in imaginative play Addressing Bullying Behaviour in Children and Young People-A FREE Forum to mark Children’s Week This forum is an opportunity for parents, teachers and other people who work with children and young people to hear about innovative ways to prevent or reduce bullying behaviour by children and young people.
