ALTHOUGH HE WASN’T AWARE OF IT THEN,
Dr. Scott Brown’s interest in rehabilitation
medicine started at Yale University when
he wrote his senior thesis about James P.
Johnson, an American jazz pianist and
composer. The thesis was later published in
book form as James P. Johnson: A Case of
Mistaken Identity.
At Rutgers School of Medicine, Brown
became interested in musculoskeletal and
neurological issues, particularly those
experienced by musicians and dancers. So it
was a natural progression for Brown to
choose to specialize in the field of physical
medicine and rehabilitation.
Today, he heads Sinai Hospital’s
Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation.

“Rehab has been an extremely strong
and prominent presence at Sinai for
decades,” Brown explains. “At Sinai, rehab
is a full department that the hospital has
committed to extensively over the years.
We also are considered a clinical center of
excellence.”
In the following interview, Brown talks
more about rehab—and the exciting new
Louis and Phyllis Friedman Neurological
Rehabilition Center.
Q
Q: What makes physical medicine
and rehabilitation unique?
Q: What makes your department
renowned in the region?
SB: Sinai was the first community
hospital in Maryland to create a full
department in physical medicine and
rehabilitation. The department began in
the mid ‘60s as a full department, not a
Dr. Scott Brown stands in the cramped, busy neurological rehabilitation and traumatic brain injury units.
“Following soon after the April 2009 gift from
Sandra and Malcolm Berman naming the Brain &
Spine Institute, the Friedman's gift was the
jump-start our new neurological rehabilitation
unit needed. Without their support, we wouldn’t
be as far along in the process.”

REHABILITATION
division of another one. Before then, if
you needed rehabilitation, you had to go
to a state or federal institution.
We are staffed exclusively by board
certified specialists in the field, and we
have a residency training program. Only
one other hospital in Maryland offers
that.
Our flagship programs bring in a lot
of referrals from other hospitals. One in
particular is brain injury and neurological rehabilitation, which offers a full
continuum of care for patients who have
traumatic brain injury and coma to mild
brain injury and everything in between.
Additionally, we provide reintegration
services to ensure that our patients make
a smooth transition back to their home
and their community. No other hospital
can really compare with that.
Pain management is another area that
draws a lot of referrals from other
hospitals. Again, we have the broadest
spectrum of medical services available,
2
treating everything from acute back pain
with pain radiating down the leg to the
person who has had 10 operations and is
on a ton of medicines but still can’t get
out of bed every day.
Q: Why is the new neurological
rehabilitation unit needed?
SB: Brain injury and neurological rehabilitation draws patients to Sinai. To
maintain that draw, we need to remain
cutting edge. Right now, our 23-bed
neurological rehabilitation inpatient unit
is housed in Mt. Pleasant 2, which is the
oldest building on campus. The space
was not designed for our purposes and is
inadequate for doing state-of-the-art
rehabilitation. Staff have very little room
to work in and the unit lacks amenities
like private rooms for patients. There is
no room for the technology we use.

SB: Unlike most other fields, ours is not
defined by a single organ or a single
disease process. What defines us is that
we see people who have medical impairments or disabilities. From brain injury
to amputation, from stroke to chronic
arthritis, our work crosses all medical
disciplines.
Predominantly, we focus on
musculoskeletal and neurologic
problems. That accounts for 80% of
what we see. But there is some crossover.
We have people in our inpatient unit who
require rehabilitation after having had
transplants or heart surgery.
PHYLLIS FRIEDMAN MAY
joke that her husband, Louis,
“eats, drinks and breathes
LifeBridge,” but there is much
more than a grain of truth in
her good-natured teasing. Louis
is a member, not just of the
LifeBridge Health board of
directors, but of Sinai
Hospital’s board, too.
“Louis serves on many
board committees,” Phyllis
says, “but his commitment to
the health system doesn’t end
when the meetings do. He is
always thinking about how to
raise more funds so that Sinai
and LifeBridge can continue to
provide state-of-the-art care
and attract outstanding
physicians.”
To that end, the Friedmans,
both attorneys, made a
leadership gift to establish the
Louis and Phyllis Friedman
Neurological Rehabilitation
Center.
The philanthropic couple has seen
Sinai’s quality care and compassion up
close; both Louis and his mother were
rehab patients at Mt. Pleasant. “While they
were there,” Phyllis explains, “Louis and I
saw two things that shaped our thinking.
First, no matter who they were, all patients
were treated with such care, dignity and
respect that we were proud to be
associated with Sinai. Second, the unit was
beyond renovation. It desperately needed a
new home where its wonderful staff could
work without being hindered by the
limitations of an obsolete facility.”
She continues, “When Louis was a
patient I promised the staff I would be
their advocate, and it feels amazing to
actually see something like this happening.
➤ continued from page 2
Q: What advantages will the new
unit offer?
SB: The new unit will allow us to provide
the best possible patient care using stateof-the-art equipment. It will give us the
room we need for the robotic and virtual
reality technologies.
Each patient will have a private
room. In addition to ensuring privacy

Louis and Phyllis Friedman
Actually, it feels a little bit unbelievable
that we have been able to give back in
such a meaningful and concrete way.”
Amazing? Yes. Unbelievable? No. The
couple has a history of supporting local
health care providers. They began including
Sinai in their charitable giving because
they believed it had the potential to be
one of the region’s top hospitals.
Their instincts were correct. “Over the
years,” says Phyllis, “we have watched
Sinai evolve, and it makes us proud to be
associated with a hospital known for its
expertise and its outstanding,
compassionate care.”
and dignity, private rooms make it easier
to do one-on-one therapy and provide a
better environment for teaching families
how to help their loved ones. That piece
is critical, because families are a vital part
of the rehab process and play a
prominent role in smoothing the patients’
return to the community.
One of the clinical tools used by our
department is to schedule patients for an
overnight stay in a special Activities of
Daily Living (ADL) Apartment on the
Louis recalls his first
contact with LifeBridge fondly.
“I was working with the
development office and the
administration as a trustee of
the Herman & Walter
Samuelson Foundation to get
Sinai’s ER-7 off the ground. It
was an impressive and eyeopening experience to see how
much everyone gave of themselves to deliver quality care to
each person who came
through the doors.
“After that, I went on the
LifeBridge board and served on
a number of committees, all of
which I enjoyed. But when I
served on the oversight
committee, I got an inside
look at the all-out dedication
to excellence demonstrated by
the doctors and staff. That’s
when I really got hooked.”
Truth be told, he was hooked
on philanthropy long ago, having
learned by example from his parents.
“I always saw them give to charity,
even when they had to make personal
sacrifices to do so. And, of course, we
always had the blue “pushke” [a box that
holds coins for charity] sitting out,” Louis
explains. “As I grew up, my parents
encouraged me to participate, and I can
remember standing on street corners
collecting for charity as a teenager. When I
graduated law school and got involved with
The Associated, I could see their pleasure.”
Phyllis adds another perspective. “When
your children have grown and you have
fulfilled your responsibility to your family, I
think you reach a point where you start to
look around for ways to share and give back
to the community that has helped make
everything else in your life possible.” ●
unit so we can see how well they can
manage. Part of that includes knowing
how to use equipment like Personal
Digital Assistants (PDAs) and computers.
The new unit will utilize the latest, most
sophisticated equipment for teaching
them those skills.
Our staff is absolutely exceptional.
They have the expertise. The new unit
will give them the cutting-edge tools—
and the space—to complement it.

Grateful Couple Leads the Way to a
New Neurological Rehabilitation Center

Q: How would you describe the
importance of the leadership gift
made by Louis and Phyllis Friedman?
SB: It is tremendously important. Louis
was a patient on our unit and he has
done exceptionally well. Louis and
Phyllis were so grateful that they chose to
give back to the hospital to support our
new effort. Their gift was the jump-start
we really needed. I don’t think we’d be as
far along in the process without their
leadership.
We had been talking for a number of
years about where we could build a new
neurological and brain injury rehab unit.
We were thrilled to have the opportunity
to look at the 5th floor in the South
Tower. It’s a great space. The shell is
already there, but it is a very expensive
project to build. We’re looking at a cost
of $10 million.
Part of that includes reconfiguring
space in our in-patient rehab unit on the
5th floor of the Blaustein Building. That
space was created especially for rehab 14
years ago and is still exceptional. But by
reconfiguring it, we will make it possible
for all of our inpatient rehabilitation
services to be contiguous.
Q: What is the timeline for the
project?
SB: We are working closely with the
architects and staff to design the space,
and we hope to start construction in the
next 12 months. My team is thrilled
about the hospital’s commitment to this
project and the tremendous impact this
new facility will have on our patients as
they endure a very challenging time in
their lives. ●

Inpatient rehabilitation
Sinai was the first community
hospital in Maryland to offer acute
inpatient rehabilitation. Its goal is to
help patients achieve the ability to
function independently so they can
return home, usually after an acute
medical or surgical hospitalization. It is
designed for patients who need and
can tolerate a minimum of three hours
of intensive therapy each day.
The 46-bed accredited acute
rehabilitation unit provides all
necessary medical and surgical
resources, including consultations with
specialists, radiology, a lab, emergency
teams, radiation treatment and
dialysis. It accommodates patients in
these diagnostic areas:

brain injury and neurologic
disorders
general rehabilitation
Two highly specialized inpatient
programs include RESTORE!—a brain
injury rehab program for patients
emerging from coma who need help
managing the behavioral problems
associated with brain injury—and
Function Plus, a program for chronic
pain management.
Sinai’s outpatient department was the
first of its kind in Maryland to become part
of an acute care hospital and offer a
vocational services program. The outpatient
department is home to a highly trained
staff of physiatrists (physicians who
specialize in rehabilitation medicine),
physical therapists, speech-language
pathologists, occupational therapists,
psychologists and social workers.
The center’s chronic pain program
serves adults of all ages, many from out of
town. Other specialized programs include
driver evaluation and training as well as
RETURN!, a therapy program to improve
memory, organization, initiation and other
thinking skills.

center includes:

$100,000 OR MORE CUMULATIVE SUPPORT
The Family Society recognizes donors who have made gifts of $100,000 or more to LifeBridge
Health affiliates since 1998, the year the health system was formed. Donors are invited to join
the Society in perpetuity once they have given a cumulative total of at least $100,000. For some
it may take many years and several gifts to reach the membership threshold; for others, a single
gift may be enough to qualify.
LifeBridge Health honors and remembers those donors whose visionary gifts have provided
the foundation upon which our affiliates have been built. If we have inadvertently missed you,
please accept our sincere apology and notify us of our omission.

during the last fiscal year in support of any LifeBridge Health affiliate—Sinai Hospital of
Baltimore, Northwest Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital and the
Courtland Gardens Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
The consistent, devoted support of annual donors makes many of our accomplishments
possible. The funds are used to strengthen hospital and affiliate programs, enhance medical
technologies, assist in attracting the best clinical staff and maintain a healing environment.
In short, annual gifts increase the quality of the healthcare experience we are able to offer our
patients.
LifeBridge Health is pleased and honored to recognize the donors who made gifts at the

members and other supporters. Former chairs Robert Ginsburg (1982-83), George Goodman
(1992-93), Dr. William Parker (1990-91) and Charles Winner, Esq. (2005-08) attended.

cozy hearth area.

Record-Breaking Magic of Life Gala
Raises More than $3 Million
B
BALTIMORE, YOU DID IT AGAIN! Your outstanding turnout for LifeBridge Health’s
“Magic of Life Gala” helped the event retain its coveted spot on the distinguished list
of the city’s most successful one-day fundraisers.
Held on June 5 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the gala raised a record-breaking
$3,007,500. Proceeds will benefit programs and services provided by LifeBridge Health
and its member facilities: Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Northwest Hospital, Levindale
Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital and Courtland Gardens Nursing & Rehabilitation
Center.
Joseph and Annette Cooper, Jon and Susan Levinson and John and Laura Shmerler
chaired the gala.
More than 1,200 guests enjoyed performances by Jordin Sparks, winner of the
sixth season of American Idol, and comedian SARGE.
Alex Cooper Auctioneers Executive Vice President Jon Levinson said, “The gala
chairmen and our wives want to thank the Baltimore community for making this
year’s gala the most successful in LifeBridge Health history.
“Our great team’s tireless efforts and dedication—combined with the support of
individuals, foundations and the business community—contributed to an unforgettable night and much-needed programs and services for LifeBridge Health.”
LifeBridge Health thanks the sponsors of the Magic of Life Gala 2010 for helping to
make the record-breaking event possible. ●
