Student Guide 2014
A Student Guide to
CHURCHES
2014/2015
2
Welcome to Manchester!
The Chaplaincy Team at St Peter’s has compiled this guide to help you find a
Church that you can settle into. This guide is also on line at the Chaplaincy
web site: www.stpeters.org.uk
Whilst there are many good churches in Manchester there is one about which
we advise caution - The Manchester International Church of Christ. This
Church has been excluded from University Campuses.
If you would like to know more about any Christian Group, you are welcome
to contact us at the Chaplaincy for information.
With best wishes from
The Chaplaincy Team

Holy Innocents has been described as a ‘beautiful church with
a liturgy to match’, which is very complimentary. We have a
small choir (always open to new singers!), a bell ringing team,
seasonal study groups, and a tradition of getting involved in
issues relating to social justice and responsibility. We are very
good at food: bread and soup lunches, celebratory cake, and
vast amounts of biscuits seem to be a key part of our life
together. The church is open every day – a place for quiet
reflection, the security and structure of worship, a chance to
belong to an all-age community while away from home.

An active evangelical parish church with a strong emphasis on
biblical teaching and evangelism. Morning service has a wide
age-range [including groups for children and young people];
evening service mainly students and young professionals. Both
services have a variety of musical styles. The main group for
students is Student Bible Study [free cakes!] on a Thursday
evening (E-mail [email protected]) There are plenty of
opportunities for service and social activities in SBS and within
the wider church. For those wanting to look into the Christian
faith for themselves, we run “Christianity Explored” each
term time on Monday evenings. (E-mail: [email protected])

have been accused of being “too conservative” and “too
charismatic” at the same time – make your own judgement!
Worship and fellowship are provided in English (well, the

preaching is in English, the rest of it tends to be in a version
of Singlish!) Cantonese (genuine HK Cantonese most of the
time!) and Mandarin.
Our mission is to “declare God’s glory and grace” to all

are welcomed and fully integrated into the church and its

Reach is passionate about seeing young adults (18-35’s-ish!)
get excited about their walk with God, and envisioned and
equipped to fulfil all that God has for them in their lives,
through Sunday night meetings, Lifegroups (small groups),
prayer events, training resources and a whole lot more. There
are also many ways to get involved such as prayer teams,
worship, sound, making cakes for after the meeting, set up
and set down, plus Alpha courses, Life Lounge (our monthly
interactive arts event), street outreach... if we don't do it
yet, why don't you start it?! Reach is the evening service of
Manchester Vineyard Church.

Description
South Manchester Family Church (SMFC) is a bible-based,
lively church serving South Manchester with the good news of
Jesus Christ. The church is a community drawn from a diverse
social and ethnic background, who share a passion for Jesus.
We don’t just feed and water our students; our heart is that
you’re part of the church family. There are lots of
opportunities to get involved, build friendships and contribute
to the life of the church. ‘Adopt-a-Student’ connects students
with individual families who provide a supportive environment
throughout your uni years, whether they’re helping you
through exam stress or training you to be leaders and find
God’s direction for your life. SMFC is part of the Newfrontiers
family of churches and a member of the Evangelical Alliance.

Our identity as Unitarians is based on shared values, not
shared beliefs. We expect everyone to be on their own
36
spiritual path. We welcome LGBT, Transgender and Fluid
together with their straight allies. We are a tolerant spiritual
community, supporting each other on our journey. Whilst
Unitarianism has its roots in Protestant Christianity, we find
wisdom in the writings of world religions, poetry and prose.
Amongst our members are those who identify as Atheist,
humanist, agnostic, Christian, Buddhist and Eco Spiritual and
many who are a mixture! If you have doubts and questions this
is a good place for you. We may not answer them but we will
help you to explore them and clarify your thoughts.
