Marist Pilgrimage 2016
17 JUNE 2016 | NO. 9
In April this year, MCR Sports Coordinator Mr Luke MacNamara
had the opportunity to travel to Jordan, Israel, Italy and France
along with teachers from Marist schools across Australia as
part of the 2016 Marist Pilgrimage. Below is his reflection on
the pilgramage, which was shared with the College last week
on Champagnat Day.
The Marist Pilgrimage gave us the opportunity to further
encounter the stories of Jesus and Marcellin Champagnat,
two men of great example. We visited places of significance
in the lives of both - including where they were born, where
they lived and worked, and ultimately where they died.
As we know, the five characteristics of the Marist Charism are:
Family Spirit, Love of work, In the Way of Mary, Presence,
Simplicity
The International Marist Community talk of seven
characteristics of the Charism, which also includes: Trust in
God, Love of Jesus and His Gospel
Amongst many memorable experiences on the Pilgrimage,
there are three that had significant impact and made me
reflect on my own understanding of the Marist charism.
While in Jerusalem we had the opportunity to walk the Stations
of the Cross at dawn. We arrived at the place where Jesus
was crucified, and celebrated the Eucharist there. The closest
thing I could compare to the mood and the atmosphere of
such a reverent experience is the dawn ANZAC service.
We also had the privilege of an audience with Pope Francis, a
man exemplifying a ‘Love of Jesus and His Gospel’. This took
place in St Peter’s Square - amongst a crowd of 40-50,000
people - and provided a connection to the Global Catholic
Church.
This was followed by the rare opportunity to visit the Vatican
grounds and a statue of Saint Marcellin that faces the entrance
to the Pope’s residence. Fitting perhaps to consider that it is
our founder whom the Pope sees each time he leaves home.
Having seen and heard so much about The Hermitage and
its significance in the Marist story, actually being there was
something quite special. The stories of Marcellin’s life, visits
to his childhood home and the site of the first Marist school
at La Valla reflect the characteristics of ‘Simplicity’ and ‘Love
of Work’.
This was the epitome of ‘Trust in God’ - Jesus knew that he
was to be killed and would die for our sins. How special to be
in the place where he showed the greatest love for us.
Most memorable from our week at The Hermitage was an
evening prayer reflection in the room that was Marcellin’s
and the place where he passed away. The final days and hours
www.marcellin.nsw.edu.au | [email protected] | Ph: (02) 9398 6355 | Fax: (02) 9398 9049
of his life, much of which was spent surrounded by the
Brothers who looked to him for guidance and leadership,
were recounted to us. His words were retold, highlighting
the care and genuine love he had for the Brothers, for Mary
and the Marist movement that they had worked so hard
together to establish. Amongst his final words to them was
the following:
I die with grateful and respectful sentiments, and in the
closest bonds of union with all members of the Society of
Mary especially the Brothers under my care who have
always had a special claim on my affection.
Keep ever alive among you the charity of Christ.
What a consolation we have, to remember that we have
lived in the favour of Mary
Love one another as Jesus Christ has loved you.
The Pilgrimage was a memorable
experience in many ways, and I would
like to thank Mr Hickey and Mr Buxton
for the opportunity to have participated.

From the Deputy Headmaster
Thank you to everyone involved in Champagnat week last
week. Reflecting on the life of Marcellin Champagnat, his
mission and story, enables all of us to consider what is means
to be Marist. Champagnat Day on Friday was outstanding.
A wonderful Mass set the tone of the day, followed by
Marcellin’s Got Talent, then a celebration to acknowledge
not only being a Marcellin student but also being part of the
broader Marist community.
I would like to congratulate the students listed on Page 3,
who received a Champagnat Award last Friday. To receive a
Champagnat award, the following criteria must be met:
St Marcellin Champagnat’s great desire was that Marist
schools would contribute to the development of young
people as ‘good Christians and good citizens’.
The Champagnat Award is presented to students who
are outstanding witnesses to this aspiration; boys who
have displayed through word and deed the values of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Boys who are recognised as role
models within the College community.
I would like also to congratulate the following staff who too
received a Champagnat Award:
- Mr John Finley
- Mr Matthew Fitzgerald
- Mrs Mary Ivancic
- Mr David Ross
With only a few weeks of Term Two, it is important high
standards continue and that learning is maximised. I spoke
to the entire school last week about this very topic. I would
expect that every student is working harder than ever in the
final weeks of Term Two.
Have a nice weekend.

Parents in Touch - An Evening with
Professor Ian Hickie
On Wednesday, 16 June, in excess of 500 parents and staff
from our local community gathered for our Term 2 Parents
in Touch meeting. The guest speaker for the evening was
Professor Ian Hickie, an internationally renowned researcher
in clinical psychiatry and a leading voice on mental health
issues.
Parents and staff who attended were from numerous schools,
including Marcellin College, Brigidine College, Champagnat
Catholic College, Cranbrook, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart,
St Clare’s College, Waverley College, St Vincents, Scot’s
College, St Andrews, St Anthony’s, St Brigid’s, Our Lady of
the Rosary, St Mary & St Joseph, St Agnes, St Aidan’s, St
Therese, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, St Margaret Mary’s,
St Charles and Holy Cross.
Professor Hickie’s talk was engaging and informative
and gave great insight into the issues that face young
adolescents today. Integrating the latest research, Professor
Hickie explored a range of issues related to drug and alcohol
abuse, overuse of technology, mental health and the
subsequent impact on individuals and their families as well
as the importance of social development for adolescents.
The evening concluded with an open forum that allowed
parents to address specific concerns and to ask questions
directly relating to their experiences. The success of
the evening was highlighted by generosity of those in
attendance who donated to Professor Hickie’s ongoing work
and research into youth mental health and the prevention
and early intervention in emerging mood disorders. We
thank Professor Hickie for sharing his wisdom and expertise.

Year 7 World History & Geography Excursion
On Tuesday and Wednesday 24th-25th May Year 7 visited
the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University. They handled
ancient artefacts from Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near
East and attempted to interpret their meaning.
Students also observed a
genuine Egyptian Mummy
(complete with severed
head!) as they learned
about the process of
embalming. They were
able to feel a Greek statue
to determine how it came
to be damaged. Some were
even decimated in the
Roman Room! It was an
enjoyable day and a great
cap-off for the study of
Ancient History.
Diverse Learning - Newman Stream Parent Experts
As part of our Newman Stream enrichment program we
would like to draw on the skills and expertise of many of
our parents and old boys within the Marcellin Community.
Our students and staff would benefit from the knowledge
and expertise that many in our community possess across
a variety of fields, professions and interesting skill sets. We
would like to organise guest speakers from our parent and
old boy networks to speak with our students. If you would
like to be part of this program, please email me at jennifer.

WINTER SEASON - RUGBY LEAGUE & SOCCER
Rd 5 v North Shore
Our winter teams were drawn to play North Shore in
‘Champagnat Round’ of the MCC competition. Despite some
close matches in the U13b, U14 and A Grade divisions, our
Soccer teams were winless against North Shore. Our Rugby
League teams performed well, winning four of the five
matches contested with North Shore comfortably. Both ‘C’
teams playing in the U13 and senior B divisions found their
opposition from Ryde too strong. All in all, Round 5 proved
to be one of mixed fortunes for our teams, leading into the
spare round last week.
Rd 6 v Pagewood
Yesterday we took on our closest MCC ‘neighbour’ in Rugby
League and Soccer. This proved to be a very successful day
for Marcellin College. Our Rugby League teams excelled,
defeating Pagewood in all but one match contested. Our
teams didn’t have it all their own way however, with a
number of tight score lines. Success was also enjoyed on the
Soccer fields, with victory claimed in five of the six matches
played. The A Grade and B Grade led the way, keeping their
opposition scoreless.
Group A alongside St. Dominic’s College Penrith and St.
Francis Xavier College Canberra.
The first game of the day proved to a hard, physical battle
against an imposing St. Dominic’s team. Although the
score remained close throughout, the Marcellin students’
superior skill levels eventually came to fore in a 4.6(30) to
3.4(22) victory. The goal scorers were Thomas Chichester (3)
and Harrison Lewis.
The nature of the draw meant that Marcellin had to play
in back to back matches. In the second game of the day
the team started brightly, but as tiredness became a factor
towards the end of the encounter against St. Francis Xavier
they were eventually overhauled in a 3.4(22) to 3.5(23)
defeat. The goal scorers were Thomas Chichester, Anthony
Halikas and Jared Deep. This result ultimately meant that
Marcellin missed the day’s final by a single point.
CCC CUP RUGBY LEAGUE
On Thursday 9 June, the A Grade Rugby League team
began their defence of the Combined Catholic Colleges Cup
against St Patricks Sutherland. This competition is open to
all Catholic schools in the state.
In a very one sided match, the boys ran out convincing victors
54-4. It was an outstanding team performance, considering
the boys were missing five of their regular starting team.
Best players on the day were Bailey Alchin, Cooper Malcolm
and Johnny Mitsias. The team has now progressed to
the quarter final stage of the competition with their next
opponents still to be decided.
The player of the day was Jared Deep. Congratulations to all
the boys in a very solid showing in a state-wide competition.
