This season marked the 3rd consecutive winning season for the team and the 2nd consecutive Northern Region Tournament appearance. Although we fell short of our goal of at least one victory in the Regional Tournament, we had an outstanding year that featured a number of very exciting games including 4 extra-inning games. The varsity team was led this year by an extraordinary group of seniors: Patrick Benson, Michael Berrigan, P.J. Braun, Alex Hauser, Paul McClure, Jayme Murray and Garrick Willis. This year’s team has set a great example for future teams in how to perform as a team and they have set a standard that we hope will be carried on by our returning players. Although we are graduating a large number of very talented individuals, we will have a number of core players returning as well as a large group of rising Sophomores and Juniors to represent West Potomac. We expect to make a run at the Patriot District Championship next season. The 2013 JV Wolverine Baseball Team stepped onto the diamond with big shoes to fill after a phenomenal 2012 JV Season, but they accepted the challenge with grit and determination. This year’s team completed this season with an 8-4 record, finishing in 2nd place in the Patriot District. The 2013 JV Wolverines outscored their opponents 87-66, and had a team batting average of 0.336 averaging nine hits per game. Representing this team on and off the field this year were Team Captains Tom Nicholson and Zach Belanger. Tom and Zach were integral to the team’s success and the younger guys learned from two great leaders. Lastly, it is important to remember that our players are students first and they have a duty to their studies as well as their athletic development. This year 19 of our players achieved a Grade Point Average above 3.5! These students should be commended for their exceptional dedication to their sport, and their brilliance in the classroom. They are: Michael Barnes, Michael Berrigan, Zach Day, Matthew Gill, Alex Hauser, Zach Hecker, Rocky Iboleon, Jackson Kosmacki, Billy Lescher, Andrew Maloney, J.L. Michaud, Paul McClure, A.J. Off to a slow start due to lack of time on the water in the first half of the season, this very fit group of athletes “caught up” to our competition as the season progressed, finishing the year with highly competitive entries in the men’s and women’s novice 8boat categories. All rowers showed great promise for the future with several rowers and coxswains “filling in” on occasion in Varsity boats this year. The squad was a mixture of first year and experienced players. We shared some great moments like our Saturday morning in Fort Hunt Park, we ran 2.5 miles, coaches Alnwick and Stamos shared the history of the game, and then we played Wolverine Baggataway with two goals placed on either sides of the woods about 150 yards apart. Coaches Alnwick and Stamos, and the more experienced players on the team worked together to teach 11 members of our squad how to play this beautiful sport. The captains were Connor Kelly, Peter Stamos, and Spencer Toft. Our goal keepers Josiah Yikona and Bryan Snigur were both new to the position, but by the end of the season you would not have known it. The team was a cohesive unit that gave every opponent a challenge. We endured some tough, yet close losses to Mclean, South County, and TC Williams. The highlight of the season was our overcoming of a 4 goal deficit to beat West Springfield 7-6. The scoring was shared between Attack and Midfield. Our top goal scorers at attack were Christopher Quin and Spencer Toft, while Kyle Hanna and Christopher Hanley led the midfielders in scoring. Coach: Sue McConville WABC SPRING 2013 NEWSLETTER West Potomac Boys Soccer This year’s West Potomac boys soccer team completed another tough regular season schedule, was ranked as high as #7 on the Washington Post all-met soccer rankings, and they made a trip back to the regional tournament. Basically, this season was one of the best in school history! During the season, the boys’ soccer team compiled a record of 7-5-3 and ended up beating West Springfield High School in the first round of district play. The win put the boys team into the 2013 Northern Virginia Regional Tournament for the third time in five years. Although the regional tournament ended a little early when the boys lost to the number one ranked Oakton High School in the first round, they showed that they are a good team that has the skills and abilities to be a contender next season. West Potomac had one player, Marc Lotterie that was selected for First Team All-District Honors and First Team All-Region Honors. Marc’s selection for First Team All Region is a first in school history for boys soccer. Additionally, West Potomac had another player, Erik Liner, selected for Second Team All-District Honors. The above players represented the team and school well this past season and have kept the boys soccer team on the map. Further, the boy’s JV soccer team improved dramatically from last season and we are looking forward to a promising 2014 season. Second year head coach, David Fink did a great job inspiring them to play hard all season long. Thank you for all of your hard work! Our officers for the 2013-2014 school year will be Rick Genuario and Vicki Aardema as Co-Presidents again. Nancy Murray will be our Treasurer for one more year. Please, anyone with accounting experience: We could use your help taking over for Nancy for the following year. Thank you to Anna Diefendorf for performing so well as our Secretary. This position needs to be filled so please contact me if you are interested. Most of our Team Rep positions are filled, however we have need for volunteers for Gymnastics, Wrestling, Boys and Girls Basketball and Cheer. Thank you, Kathy Boykin for filling the role of Volunteer Coordinator. We are looking for volunteers to help her next year. Also, thank you to Susie Jackson and Kari Panagopoulos for being our Concession coordinators. They could use some help next year as well. Remember our meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 7 pm in the library. The meeting is open to anyone and we encourage all team reps, parents, and students to attend. The annual WABC Golf Tournament held on June 13th at Laurel Hill Golf Course was a huge success. We had 105 golfers enjoy a windy but not rainy day at a great venue. Due to the generosity of our players and sponsors, we were able to raise more money than the year before which will help fund the engineering for two synthetic turf fields we hope to have built in the summer of 2014. Thank you’s will be sent soon with pictures and sponsor logos will be placed on our website. Please recognize the contributions of our local businesses by supporting them whenever you can. Also, thank you coaches and teams for supporting this big event: Baseball, Band, Cheer, Field Hockey, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Lacrosse, Swim/Dive/ Volleyball, Track, Boys Basketball, Softball, Football, XC, and Boys Tennis all sponsored a hole. We are pleased to have this great school spirit and unity to improve facilities and equipment. Look for the 2013-2014 Silver Patron Passes going on sale soon. The deadline for the discount ($155) is August 26. GOOD LUCK FALL SPORTS!
