Avenel Hats commenced operations in 1966,
the company’s founding partners Norm Dobinson and
Horrie Smith previously worked with a leading
headwear manufacturer in Flinders Lane, Melbourne.
The Partnership was a unique association, which saw
the company grow strongly and survive the ups and
downs of the Australian economy. For over forty-five years
Avenel Hats has supplied both large and small retail
stores throughout Australia with the latest in headwear.
Our Headwear collection for each season is sourced from
UK, Ireland, Italy, USA and Asia, our
collection is very comprehensive.

"The Trilby Hat..."
A trilby hat (commonly called a trilby) is a narrow-brimmed fedora. The trilby was once
viewed as the rich man’s favoured hat; it is sometimes called the “brown trilby” in England
and is much seen at the horse races. It is also sometimes described as a “crumpled” fedora.
The trilby is described as having a “shorter, narrower brim, which is angled down to the
front and slightly turned up at the back” versus the fedora’s “wider brim which is more level.”
The trilby also has a slightly shorter crown than a typical fedora design.
The hat’s name derives from the stage adaptation of George Du Maurier’s 1894 novel
Trilby; a hat of this style was worn in the first London production of the play, and promptly
came to be called “a Trilby hat”. Traditionally it is made from rabbit hair felt, but is usually
made from other materials, such as tweed, straw, wool and wool/nylon blends.

BOUTIQUE IMPORTS - ECUADORIANS – HAND WOVEN IN ECUADOR
The Panama Hat is the finest straw hat in the world. Hand woven
in Ecuador from toquilla straw, they are wearable works of art.
True to the artisanal tradition, these hats continue to be woven
by hand in different grades with the top grade of hat taking
3 months to make. Thickness of the straw, tightness of weave
and, of course, the skill of the weaver determines the grade and
hence the price of the finished product.
The Ecuadorian towns of Montecristi and Cuenca are where
most Panama hats are made. They are created by crafts
people whose skills have been refined and handed down for
generations. Making the hats is, for the people of these two
towns, a calling and a way of life as well as a job.
During the construction of the Panama Canal, workers, officials
and visitors wore the hats. By the time the Panama Canal was
officially opened in 1914, the toquilla hats from Ecuador were
a fashion icon and were known by all as “Panama hats.”
