affiliated with two absolutely exceptional pilots
on the international aerobatic scene: Philipp
Steinbach and Sean D. Tucker, two men with kerosene in
their veins and Tutima’s insignia on the wings of the aircraft.
Philipp Steinbach isn’t only one of the world’s best stunt
pilots. He also performs most of his daring flight maneuvers
in aircraft that he has constructed himself under the name
“Sbach.” These include, for example, the two-seater Sbach
342, an ultra-light low-wing carbon-fiber aircraft with technology and styling that reveal a new dimension of flight (see
cover photo).

world over. After we had collaborated with him and
his team of experienced stunt pilots for more than a decade,
Tutima and Tucker cofounded the “Tutima Academy of
­Aviation Safety” early in 2006.
Located close to the coast of California at King City (near
Salinas), the flying school offers professional and amateur
pilots a unique opportunity to practice their flying skills
with the world’s best instructors aboard top-quality aircraft
and to learn how to respond to critical in-flight situations – a
capability optimally harmonizes with Tutima’s product philosophy. After all, our brand’s name is derived from the Latin word tutus, which means “safe” and “protected.”
Flying is an inherently risky sport, so a reliable chronograph
is an essential item in the equipment of every responsible
pilot. The American journalist Ariel Adams recently had a
chance to convince himself of this at firsthand. Although
Adams doesn’t have a pilot’s license, the Tutima Academy
invited him aboard a test flight over the Pacific Ocean. With
a brand-new Tutima Grand Classic strapped to his wrist,
Adams took the control stick of an aerobatic biplane in
hand and flew a few rounds on
his own. In the wake of this exhilarating experience, Adams became aware of several good
reasons why many pilots prefer not to fly without their trusty
Tutima wristwatches. “The whole team wears Tutima watches. And I mean they really wear them. These aren’t watches that they put on only when they want to put on a show,”

aselworld, which occurs annually in Switzerland, is
the world’s leading trade fair for watches and jewelry. Over 100,000 visitors arrived this year to view
the newest items from the big brand-name manufacturers
and to learn all about the latest trends. For the past 30 years,
Tutima has numbered among the regular exhibitors – even
though we’re not known for continually chasing after the
newest trends. But we have good reasons why we remained
faithful to the principle of maximal functionality in the three
new models that we publically presented for the first time in
Basel.
This is especially obvious in our only slightly modified
Grand Classic line: because anyone who has created a classic and who wants to continue to successfully evolve it must
proceed with the utmost circumspection. At first glance, the
GRAND CLASSIC RESERVE – which is now equipped
with a power-reserve display – appears to be a typical and
familiar Tutima classic: patterned after the legendary historical Tutima pilot’s chronograph from 1941.
But a second, closer look discovers that the stainless steel
case has a new and different shape. The spacious polished
areas on the fluted rotatable bezel, together with the characteristic red mark at the “12,” stand for timelessly elegant
design and optimal legibility. The movement – ETA 2892A2/Tutima with big date – offers technical refinement and
perfect orientation.

The new GRAND CLASSIC BLACK CHRONOGRAPH
PR is likewise a Tutima watch par excellence. Equipped with
a power-reserve display and embodying ultramodern technology, this timepiece is built to cope with the toughest treatment: the stainless steel that’s used here is not only deeply
hardened via a special process, it’s also coated with ultra-hard
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition). This assures that the black
surfaces of the case and bracelet are almost entirely invulnerable to blows and scratches. Without a doubt, this chronograph’s robustness and clearly instrumental character make it
the ideal companion for “turbulent” times. This reliable watch
will never leave its owner in the lurch. And when its power
reserve begins to decline, a few motions of the wrist are all
that’s needed: the elaborately revised Swiss self-winding Caliber Valjoux 7750 quickly conveys fresh energy to the barrel.
The stainless steel in the case and bracelet of our new
­PACIFIC BLACK have likewise been annealed and coated
with scratch-resistant PVD. Even when facing challenges
under extreme conditions, anyone wearing this sportily eyecatching chronograph in timelessly black design needn’t devote even a single thought to his or her wristwatch, but can
concentrate undivided attention on the demanding tasks at
hand. This makes the new Pacific Black another highlight in
a series that was designed and built for perfection and precision in water sports. Among its other features, this watch
boasts a stainless steel case that’s water resistant to 20 bar, a
scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a undirectional rotating bezel with 60-minute diving scale.

With the women’s football championship fast approaching, Germany
is dreaming about a new “summer fairytale.” The chances for a repeat
win look quite good because the German world-championship team
will have the home-field advantage when it defends its title this summer. The fact that the German women’s football team is absolutely top
in the international arena is due in no small measure to the athletic
prowess of the women who kick the ball in the Federal League.
This was recently reconfirmed at the annual German Olympic Ball in
the Glass Hall at the trade fair in Leipzig. The audience at this big
charity gala, of which Tutima is the official partner, witnessed the conferral of awards on both the “Athlete of the Year” and on the “Internationally Most Successful Trainer of 2010,” who was selected by a
high-carat jury at the participating Olympic support site. The clear
winner, who has already coached his way to five championship titles, is
the most successful trainer of a women’s team in the Federal League:
Bernd Schröder of the 1st FFC Turbine Potsdam.
On Schröder’s behalf, Willi Lausch, the director of the Olympic support site in Brandenburg, accepted the prize: a Tutima Military Aviation Chronograph worth over 3,000 euros. The master trainer and
prizewinner was unable to attend the gala reception in person because
he was in the midst of preparations for the DFB Cup finals in Cologne,
where his team will face the 1st FFC Frankfurt (1:2). The prize conferral was officially repeated soon afterwards
in Potsdam, where Axel Lobenstein, who organized the
ball, personally conferred

utima startet mit Frauenpower in die Segelsaison 2009“: Diese Ankündigung sorgte im genannten Jahr für einiges Aufsehen – schließlich gelten reine Damen-Teams selbst im internationalen „Big Boat-Sport“ (gemeint sind damit Schiffe
über 40 Fuß) als Rarität. „Außer uns ist mir nur ein neunköpfiges Frauen-Projekt in Dänemark bekannt, dessen
Gründerin uns sogar als Vorbild genommen hat“, erklärt
Kirsten Harmstorf, Skipperin und Chefin der Tutima-Yacht
in Personalunion. Die Motivation der Uhrenmarke, dem
„schwachen Geschlecht“ die Segel-Stange zu halten, ist
leicht erklärt: Die Girls fallen auf, nachhallendes mediales
Echo inklusive. Während es Tutima-Geschäftsführer Jörg
Delecate neutraler formuliert („Nachdem wir die Yacht zur
Saison 2009 übernommen hatten, wollten wir auch zeigen,
dass es ein ganz neues Projekt ist. Dafür ist unser frisches
und sympathisches Frauen-Team genau die richtige Besetzung.“) bringt es Harmstorf, deren Spitzname im Übrigen
„Kirsche“ lautet, auf den Punkt. „Tutima fungiert schon seit
Jahren als Förderer des Segelsports und hat schon zahlreiche andere Projekte unterstützt. Mit dem Kauf des

Especially in the recent past, the
fifteen women sailors who comprise the crew of the “Tutima” have repeatedly attracted tremendous attention from the
press. For example, “Segel-Journal” featured several of these
seaworthy women on the cover of its May/June issue: inside the
magazine, which is published by Maximilian-Verlag in Hamburg, an article praised the women’s achievements under the
headline “The German Women’s Crew in the Big-Boat Scene.”
TUTIMA MAKES WAVES
T
he countdown has begun for the biggest event in the
world of sport sailing and the biggest summer festival in all of northern Europe: the Kieler Woche begins on June 18, 2011. This traditional event, which raises
the pulse rate of every sailor’s heart, expects to welcome at
least three million visitors from all over the world. Tutima
is decisively present – in the truest and most literal sense of
the word “decisively.”
That’s because this year will mark the
seventh time that we serve as “Official Timekeeper of the Kieler Woche
Regattas.” No doubt about it: Tutima
and the sport of sailing is a perfect
match. More than a few of the approximately 5,000 regatta participants from more than 50 nations wear
on their wrists the chronograph that
we made with tremendous passion
and expressly to satisfy the require-

ments of professional sport sailors. Last but not least, our
14-meter dk46 racing yacht “Tutima” will again cross the
starting line in Kiel. On board will be a fiveteen-woman crew
which has already successfully participated in numerous races (see inset box).
The exciting regattas will take place off the coast of KielSchilksee in sixteen national and international boat classes
and in the ten Olympic classes. The instrument wristwatches in our Yachting series are perfectly designed for precisely
these requirements. The robust case of pure titanium with
built-in push buttons and the characteristic start function
clearly show that one doesn’t merely wear a Yachting
watch: one repeatedly confronts it with new challenges.
Likewise optimally equipped to cope with the extreme conditions of water sports are our automatic Pacific models,
which are optionally available with carbon dials. The
scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is invulnerable to wind
and waves, and the case resists water to 20 bar.
Furthermore, the men’s magazine “Penthouse” recently ran a
five-pages story about the successful women mariners under
the headline “When Power Girls Burst the Knot.” “SchleswigHolstein-Magazin” followed suit with its headline: “Fifteen
Women Team Up Against the Might of the Oceans.” And the
editors of the “U.J.S.” trade journal for aficionados of watches, jewels and jewelry were likewise smitten with the athletic charms of the crew of the “Tutima”: its article about our
sponsoring activities in the disciplines of yachting and flying
was illustrated with a photo of skipper Kirsten Harmstorf and
her team.

Tutima’s Bon Mot in the Magazine
of the Havanna Lounge
As a member of the international network of International Associate Clubs (IAC), the Havanna Lounge Bremen has cultivated the distinguished culture of a smoker’s and business
club for nearly a decade. Our managing director Jörg Delecate
numbers among the many captains of industry who belong
to the club, which is situated in the heart of the time-honored
Hanseatic city. When the club invited him to give an interview to be published in the anniversary issue of its magazine,
he gladly agreed. In the interview, he revealed that alongside
a noble handmade wristwatch, a good handmade cigar ranks
among the most beautiful things in life. Capitalizing on the
favorable opportunity, he shared one of his favorite bon mots
with the Havanna Lounge’s magazine:
“Our profession is

are timeless.”

Tradition and modernity needn’t be mutually contradictory. The truth
of this statement will be affirmed by everyone who visits us at the place
where we began producing highly functional timepieces back in 1927:
namely, Glashütte, a Saxon city which – more so than any other city in
the nation – is synonymous with the fine art of German watchmaking.
Throughout the decades when the nation was divided into East Germany and West Germany, we preserved the tradition that began in
Glashütte and we continued to evolve it at Ganderkesee in Lower Saxony. In 2008, the same year when the German Watch Museum opened
its doors in Glashütte, we opened a production facility of our own in
our original hometown. Now the time has come to take the next step …
