A recent report indicates that 153 law-enforcement officers across the nation died in the line of duty, marking a continued downward trend over the past 30 years. During the 1970s more than 220 officers were killed each year, making it the deadliest decade in lawenforcement history. But, with the exception of 2001 and the high number of officers killed in the 9-11 attacks, the officer-fatality rate has declined to 160 per year. California, which lost 17 officers over the past year, had the nation’s most line-ofduty fatalities, followed by Texas, with 14, and Georgia, with 10. These figures were released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), two nonprofit organizations. While deaths have declined, further safety measures are called for. The NLEOMF and its partner organization, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), noted the importance of body armor. According to the IACP Dupont Kevlar Survivors’ Club, which tracks incidents in which the armor has saved officers’ lives, nearly 3,000 officers have been protected from potentially fatal injuries since 1975. Because this is the second consecutive year in which traffic-related accidents either equaled or topped gunfire as the leading cause of death, the NLEOMF and COPS are calling for better driver training for officers, safer automobiles and a driving public that is more attentive to officer safety when approaching accident scenes and traffic stops. Every officer who died in the line of duty during 2005 will be honored at a Candlelight Vigil on May 13 during National Police Week. “When law-enforcement officers die in the line of duty, their families need strong support,” said COPS national president Shirley Gibson, whose son, Police Master Patrol Officer Brian T. Gibson, was killed in 1997. “Concerns of Police Survivors will be there for the families who lost an officer in 2005.” The NLEOMF operates the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington. Arkansas Countryside Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own 133 acres of prime real estate in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of Van Buren County, Arkansas, on the outskirts of Clinton, a small, growing town that is the county seat and home to the National Championship Chuckwagon Races every Labor Day weekend. Possibilities abound for this versatile property, which has been owned by the same family for four generations. The land, available directly from the owners, is covered with merchantable pine, hardwood and cedar timber. The mineral rights are available for leasing in an area that is experiencing an abundance of natural-gas drilling and production. The property is traversed by two county roads, and city water can be available. Clinton’s small municipal airport lies one-half mile south of the property; the Van Buren County Courthouse is a mile south of the tract; Clinton’s public-school system, home of the Yellowjackets, is a mile and a half from the land; and a new hospital is just 31⁄2 miles away. Beautiful Greers Ferry Lake is easily accessible from numerous directions within a 10-mile range, Gulf Mountain Wildlife Management Area provides hunting opportunities within 15 miles, and a nine-hole golf course awaits action barely more than a mile from the property. If you would like to own buildable land in a rural setting that has easy access to a new hospital, schools, city and county government, a small airport and abundant recreational activities, or if you would prefer to harvest the timber, lease the mineral rights and hold the property as an investment, then this superb 133 acres nestled in the spectacular Ozarks could make any of these possibilities, or others, a reality for you. Combine apple, almonds, cranberries, brown sugar and cinnamon in Homes & properties Homes & properties Do not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase 133 acres of prime real estate located in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of Van Buren County, Arkansas, on the outskirts of Clinton, a small, growing town that is the county seat and home to the National Championship Chuckwagon Races every Labor Day weekend. Possibilities abound for this versatile piece of property, which has been owned by the same family for four generations. The land is covered with merchantable pine, hardwood and cedar timber. The mineral rights are available for leasing in an area which is currently experiencing an abundance of natural gas drilling and production. The property is divided by two county roads and city water can be made available. Clinton’s small municipal airport lies one-half mile south of the property; Van Buren County Courthouse is one mile south of the tract; Clinton public school system, home of the Yellowjackets, is 1.5 miles from the land and a new hospital is situated just 3.5 miles away. Beautiful Greers Ferry Lake is easily accessible from numerous directions within a ten-mile range, Gulf Mountain Wildlife Management Area provides hunting opportunities within fifteen miles and a nine-hole golf course awaits action barely more than a mile from the property. If you would like to own buildable land in a rural setting that has easy access to a new hospital, schools, city and county government, small airport and abundant recreational activities. Or, if you would prefer to harvest the timber, lease the mineral rights and hold the property as an investment, then this superb 133-acre tract of land nestled in the lovely Ozarks could make any of these possibilities, or others, become reality. I am sure that you have picked out the perfect people for me, a small black lab mix with a white chest. Everyone says that I am really sweet and they love the way I look into their eyes. Some roads are long and take you through some hard places. I was dumped on the road; my sister was hit by a car and lives in Heaven with you. I was saved for some reason, so I know you have a plan for my life. I must be really special to you. I have the feeling that you saved me to love a family who would need me. You made me a black Lab mix with a white blaze. I am about 8 months old now; not over 50 lbs. You made me able to love and taught me how to give kisses and to hug with my paws. At the kennels I have learned how much fun it is to play with balls and eat cream cheese. They pray for all of us dogs, but I think they pray extra hard for me because I need to be in a home to do my job here on earth. You see, I am a forever faithful sort of girl. I am waiting for your best. I love you! See a photo of Holly at www.petfinder.com. Search for dogs in the 75765 zip code area. Look for Misplaced Pets at Holly Lake Ranch and click on Holly. We know this, so we are being patient and waiting for a good home for Lady Bug, our Australian Shepherd. It has taken an entire year for her to really warm up to people. She now lets most of us hug her and pet her. She loves to be outside and sleeps soundly in her igloo. Her little ears are so cute. One is sometimes up and the other down. She has never liked the kennel or the leash and is free to wander about the fenced dog yard at her leisure. She kisses you for cream cheese and is one Australian Shepherd worth meeting. You would not be able to just let me out to do my business without having a fenced in yard, because I would just follow my nose and get lost. The Compassionate Friends The mission of The Compassionate Friends of Tyler is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age and to provide information to help others be supportive. The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, selfhelp support organization that offers friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation, and there are no membership dues or fees. The secret of TCF’s success is simple: As seasoned grievers reach out to the newly bereaved, energy that has been directed inward begins to flow outward, and both are helped to heal. The vision of The Compassionate Friends is that everyone who needs us will find us and everyone who finds us will be helped. Our monthly group meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Clinical Associates of East Texas building at 2010 Sybil Lane (just off Paluxy Drive) in Tyler. (NAPS) —More than 37 percent of the U.S. population is dieting at any given time. Some of the most popular diet programs in existence today rely on restricting or nearly eliminating the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. Unfortunately, the high-protein, low-carb diet craze has brought with it a side effect: really bad breath, or, as it is known in the scientific community, low-carb oral malodor, or LCOM. Oral hygiene “This potentially embarrassing condition may be experienced sporadically or chronically and at different degrees depending on how strictly the diet is followed, previ- The BreathRx fresh-breath system includes the elements of brushing your teeth, cleaning your tongue with a tongue scraper and then rinsing with a nonalcoholic, sugar-free mouth rinse. ous disposition for the condition and oral hygiene,” explained Sushma Nachnani, Ph.D., of the University Health Resources Group, Inc. “High-protein diets break down into this bouquet of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which are then expelled through the breath, which produces an offensive odor.” Good news The good news is that recent studies have shown that LCOM can be effectively treated through a good oral-health routine that includes the active antimicrobial components found in products such as BreathRx, which until recently was available only through your dentist. While serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea in 1951, he wrote more than 200 pages of letters to his parents. The letters and pictures in this series were kept in a cardboard box (time capsule) until May 2005, when opened and viewed for the first time in decades. This series, which began blend into any environment, to camouflage ourselves in the field, to become virtually invisible to the enemy. We were trained to operate under all types of climatic conditions. We were trained, in nighttime exercises, to use the cover of darkness and to employ the element of surprise against an enemy combatant. We were trained to be totally self- My letters sent home from the Korean War 1951 had come to an end. Little did I know at the time that they would be resurrected some 55 years later and published in a little paper called TRADERS GUIDE OF TEXAS. May 25, 2005, and ends this week, is based on these letters plus Mr. Myers’ personal recollections. Mr. Myers is a member of the East Texas chapter of the Korean War Veterans’ Association (KWVA), which welcomes Korea veterans who served from 1950 to the present and associate members who may be interested in supporting the KWVA. Myers OLLY LAKE RANCH— How do you turn a peace-loving band drum major (photo 1) into a hard-nosed blood-and-guts jarhead (photo 2) in just six weeks? It’s not easy, but it can be done, especially if you are a patriotic, idealistic 19-year-old. When your country calls, you answer the call. I was proud to be a marine. Still am. There’s a saying in the corps: Once a marine, always a marine. It’s true. There is an esprit de corps with marines, an intangible yet special feeling that emanates from the very top down. H El commandante The top marine is not called an admiral or a general (although he is a general); he is called the commandant of the Marine Corps. No other branch of service trains soldiers the way the Marines train all their soldiers. Every marine is trained first to be an infantryman. You might say first, last and always. When I was issued my M-1 rifle at Camp Pendleton in the fall of 1950, it never left my side for the next year, night and day, except when I was off of the military compound. We trained on a variety of handguns. I qualified on the .45-caliber pistol, the M-16 carbine and the Browning automatic rifle (BAR) as well as my government-issued M-1 rifle. We were trained in hand-to-hand combat with our rifle—bayonet attached, but sheathed. Cover of darkness We were trained in a military type of karate in which the object was to disable or kill an enemy combatant with your bare hands, if that situation ever presented itself. If you think I’m blowing smoke, ask any marine. We were trained to sufficient as a party of one equipped with everything we needed to survive: to live off the land for extended periods. We were drilled over and over in the care and feeding of our rifle. We were taught: Take care of your rifle and your rifle will take care of you. A rifle is called a piece or a weapon but is never referred to as a gun. “Gun,” by definition, is an artillery term, not an infantry term. Obedience training Following are just a few examples of the discipline, respect for authority and strict obedience to orders that are drilled into every marine. “Ours is not to question why; ours is but to do or die” was the oftrepeated mantra. As far as I know, marines have never been drafted. One volunteers to join the Marine Corps, and not all who join make the cut. So it was, with this pride thing going, that marines took offense to statements made by President Harry S. Truman at the outset of the Korean War. “The only propaganda machine that rivals that of Stalin is that of the United States Marine Corps,” Mr. Truman famously said. Sticks and stones When the president compared the Marine Corps to the Communist Russian leader, Joseph Stalin, his words unleashed a torrent of outrage from marines all over the world. Marines were about to put their lives on the line on the beaches of Inchon—to free the capital, Seoul, from North Korean domination. They would later fight and die on the frozen tundra of Chosen Reservoir and oth2 er hellholes in Korea too numerous to mention. (Marines landed at Inchon Sept. 15, 1950, and returned the capital to the South Korean government two weeks later, on Sept. 29, one month to the day after President Truman’s infamous letter containing the offending remark.) At the time, the U.S. Marine Corps did not even have representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In fact, before the outbreak of the Korean War some suggested the Marine Corps should be disbanded. The rationale was that the age of the marine foot soldier (grunts on the ground) had become obsolete with the advent of the atomic bomb. California dreaming One California congressman, Gordon L. McDonough, vehemently disagreed with President Harry S. Truman, as is obvious in these excerpts from Aug. 19, 1950. “My dear Mr. President “The United States Marine C o r p s has demonstrated that it is an effective hard-hitt i n g mobile force which c a n produce results on the battleground. “They are invaluable to the defense of America and to fight the aggressors which threaten American security. clearly show, Mr. Truman was just as adamantly opposed to the idea: “My dear Congressman McDo- regard to the Marine Corps. “For your information the Marine Corps is the Navy’s police force and as long as I am President that is what it will remain. “They have a propaganda machine that is almost equal to Stalin’s. “The Chief of Naval Operations is the Chief of Staff of the Navy of which the Marines are a part. “[Signed] Harry S. Truman.” Drop dead Truman’s answer was, in other words: “Over my dead body.” Today not only does the Marine Corps have representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but Marine Gen. Peter Pace happens to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Not only did marines not appreciate being called anyone’s “police force”; we never bought into the idea that the Korean War was just a “police action” in the first place. 1 nough: “I read with a lot of interest your letter in THE MUSIC MAN—Photo 1: Main Street downtown Houston between the Lamar and Rice hotels, ca. 1948. This is the mighty San Jacinto High School marching band with 18-year-old M.L. “Jimmy” Myers front and center. Coincidentally, I had just joined the Marine Reserves. Photo 2: Here’s 20-year-old Pfc. Continued from page 14 From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli, We’ll police old Harry’s Navy, Just as long as they’re at sea. First to fight the Army’s battles And to win Korean fights, While still our old friend Harry Tries to louse up all our rights. Our flag’s been flown from every ship Since the Navy had their start. Marine Detachments in their midst Kept the fleet from falling apart. Uncle Harry says we’re just police And he should really know; We’ve arrested wars since we began And dealt the final blow. We have honor, we have glory, We’re the finest you’ve ever seen, But he thinks our propaganda Is a second-rate machine. If Harry’s Army and his Navy Ever look on heaven’s scenes, They’ll see the angels are in love With United States Marines. OOOORAH! Propaganda? What propaganda? Marines don’t need no stinkin’ propaganda. Homeward bound In comparison with my voyage to Korea, the trip home was anticlimactic. I remember shore leave in Japan. I remember the celebration when we crossed the 180th meridian (the international date line). I remember the sight of the Golden Gate bridge (photos 3 and 4), but little else. We debriefed at Treasure Island Naval Base, San Francisco, and were sent to San Diego to be mustered out, discharged. From there I caught a bus home to Houston, there to rejoice with my family before heading off for Baylor University to finish my education—with a major in international trade, believe or not. Final salute It was a privilege to serve under some of the finest Marine command- Letters from the forgotten war, Korea 1951 This article is Part 41 of a series Marv Myers Card type: American Express Visa MasterCard Discover ers in the history of the corps. My first boss in Korea was Lt. Col. Foster “Frosty” La Hue, adjutant, 1st Marine Division. Many years later, while serving in Vietnam, Frosty was promoted to general. I served under the legendary and highly decorated hero, Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, in his last combat role with the 1st Marine Division in Korea until returning home in May 1951. I served under the brilliant Gen. Oliver Prince Smith, DCO (division commanding officer), 1st Marine Division, who led the division from “Inchon to Chosen” and back until he returned home in April 1951. Gen. Gerald “Jerry” Thomas replaced Gen. Smith and led the division into the largest battle of the war in April-May 1951 while I was there. He led it through three more years until the armistice, in 1954. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, under whom we in the 1st Marine Division served, said it best: “There is no substitute for victory.” Thanks for coming along with me on my journey, “Letters From the Forgotten War, Korea, 1951.” I salute you for slogging through this weekly series of 41 installments from May 2005 until March 2006.
