EDITORIAL
56th JAZZ A JUAN 2016
Since 1960 and the creation of Jazz à Juan, jazz has changed, jazz has mutated, it is everywhere, « all
over the world », permeating, transfusing and instilling itself into all musical styles, redefining borders
and boundaries, and must be recognised as the vast musical trajectory which has brought Afro-American
culture to the threshold of the most contemporary and universal questions in music, while careful not to
become lost in the prolixity of what we might conveniently call « World Music », nor hardened into an
academic discipline destined for maintaining heritage.
And so Jazz à Juan has remained, for all these decades, an open and evolving festival, in other words
optimistic, intuitive, nonconformist, avant-gardist, universalist, synergistic, culturalist, environmentalist,
humanist, intimist, modernist, mutationist, mutualist, progressive, retrofuturist...
While celebrating her 56th anniversary, Jazz à Juan retains all the visceral instinct of her own legend.
This year once again, as jazz and its close musical relatives cyrstallise into rare forms, the festival is more
than ever open to artistic expression, welcoming many legendary figures who come to perform their most
recent hits to the public.

JZ MUSIC ALL STARS
At the end of 2014, Jazz à Juan and the JZ Festival Shanghai, the most important jazz festival
in China, signed a cooperation agreement centered on the promotion of these two events
by the media and the official websites managed by each organiser, as well as on the exchange
of artists between the two festivals. So in 2015, JZ Festival and Coco Zhao, one of the best
known jazzmen of China, were in the spotlight at a Jazz à Juan concert, whilst Charles Pasi
performed at the recent JZ Festival Shanghai.
A successful exchange which is maintained in 2016 ! This year again, “JZ Festival Shanghai” will be a part of
the Pinède Gould celebrations with JZ MUSIC ALL STARS.
ORCHESTRE DES CARABINIERS DU PRINCE
The Palace Guards were formed on 8th December 1817. In 1904, Prince Albert 1st, satisfied with their
performance of police and guard duties, entrusted them with ensuring the security of the palace and
his family, declaring that «the
duties performed by the
Palace Guards will from now
on be performed by the Rifle
Brigade («les Carabiniers»),
who will henceforth be called :
«Compagnie des Carabiniers du
Prince».»
The

bearers. Despite being an
integral part of the unit, this
orchestra is not solely music-oriented and takes part in all the duties attributed to the Company. Its highly
varied repertoire enables it to play at official ceremonies and on the occasion of sporting events, public
concerts and charity concerts. Since 1989, the Sovereign Prince does not hesitate to send them abroad:
Saumur, Nîmes, Albertville, Lugano, Dusseldorf, Turin, Lisbon, Seville, Geneva, Hanover, etc. Jazz à Juan is
honoured to welcome them on the stage of the Gould pine grove on the occasion of Bastille Day.

DIDIER LOCKWOOD,
LES VIOLONS BARBARES & GUO GAN
Fifty-three years of violin, forty-three years of career, more than 4000 concerts throughout the world
and incredible collaborations with the jazz greats (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, brothers
Marsalis and Michel Petrucciani, to mention but a few)... Rhythm marked by a dash of the bow, stratched
strings, foundations forming a base for fleeting solos, haunting melodies which cross one another then reach
an explosion of sound. What more can we say about Didier Lockwood? He has taken part in all the major
jazz adventures of the past few decades and music is an essential part of Didier Lockwood’s life, a musical
style without limits, going beyond virtuosity.
During his long and impressive career, he has never ceased to explore the wealth of his instrument through
jazz, classical music and song. Here he is back in the Gould pine grove with this new project, the fruit of
his meeting with les Violons Barbares and Guo Gan. Four string insturments (violon, gadulka, morin khuur,
erhu) rubbed to the sound of unbridled percussions make for a fantastical journey from China to the
Balkans, from Mongolia to the Middle East, a gifted and highly unusual contemporary vision of the Silk Road,
crossroads of violins...

JOHNNY GALLAGHER
« A magical fusion of country, jazz, blues and rock »...
The « Time Out London » magazine makes no secret
of its enthusiasm regarding the Irishman Johnny
Gallagher’s music. This talented six-string player
gets the crowd going to the sound of his « Fender
telecaster » and its faded varnish, and the sound of
his singing, full of an expression all his own, sometimes
energetic, sometimes tender, starting as a shout to
end as murmur.
Johnny Gallagher literally shines on stage! His

expressive voice, his agility and his extraordinary
instrumental technique make this Guitar Hero’s
presence unique and undefinable. At the side of this guitarist with his cap and huge beard, Che (Guevara)
style, are his two twin brothers: James on bass and Pauric at the keyboards, the only non-Gallagher being
the drummer Michael Christie. This makes for a fine blend of original compositions and personal versions
of songs by Pink Floyd,The Band, Lynrd Skynrd, Hendrix, Peter Green and Jimmie Rogers, all delivered with
an enthusiasm which quickly catches on.
First concert Jazz à Juan
EARTH WIND & FIRE
Their songs continue to set new generations all over the
world dancing, quivering, moving and grooving, some fifty
years after their creation. In particular, a cover of « Boogie
Wonderland » was produced recently for a cult scene in
the film « The Intouchables », in which Omar Sy, the hero,
shocks the prim guests at a gloomy evening by dancing
madly to this legendary track. Earth, Wind & Fire, whom
we also have to thank for « September », « Shining Star
» and « After the love has gone », has sold around one
hundred million albums throughout the world.

Decidedly, Maurice White and his band have influenced
the music of the 70s thanks to their skilful mix of
rhythm‘n’blues, soul and jazz. Undoubtedly even their most emblematic songs, together with those created
by the Bee Gees, are the all-time best in terms of disco, then funk during this period. Maurice White passed
away this year, but Earth, Wind & Fire and the amazing Philip Bailey, whose falsetto voice rises to the most
improbable heights, will pay him a vibrant tribute through their songs which are certainly interplanetary,
but also through a show full of energy, cadenced by the vivid presence of brass instruments and the
emblematic Kalimba.

VINTAGE TROUBLE
Vintage Trouble are four musicians united in a shared
passion for virgin music free from all sophistication. For
them, popular music seems to stop at the end of the sixties.
True to their principles, they even record their demos using
vintage material. These demos, despite being made within
just three days, are so good that they are kept as they are,
without any alteration. Vintage Trouble bring to mind the
sweet warm smell of valve lamps, guitar strings rusty from
sweat, the worn shine of the stage floor...
A real journey to the land of Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding,
Solomon Burke, Syl Johnson,Young Rascals, Ike & Tina Tuner
(60s period), all in a bare format, with no frills or flashiness: no extended solos or vocal effects; we get
down to basics. Ty Taylor, the supercharged leader in a fitted suit and perfect tie, sets the tone, with a
certain similarity to James Brown at times. A groovy resonant atmosphere… An American-style show, «all
done and dusted».
First concert Jazz à Juan
BUDDY GUY
A certain Jimi Hendrix, before achieving stardom, followed him closely with a tape recorder to capture his
concerts and extract the very essence. Born in 1936, Buddy Guy is a living legend from the great period of
electric blues. In a career spanning more than half a century, he has sold
more than two million albums and gained many honours. Revered by Eric
Clapton, who sees in him « the best guitarist of all time », this flamboyant
figure from Louisiana has made a name for himself as one of the leading
names in contemporary blues.
As a child, Buddy perhaps only had a little piece of wood with two strings
as a guitar, but he was already full of the passion which would accompany
him throughout his life. And the day he plugged in a real six-string model,
he quickly rocked the foundations of r‘n’b to create his own unique style
of blues. Long associated with the late Junior Wells, today he continues
a solo career on all continents. His extraordinary play, clear and free,
spontaneous and flamboyant, combined with an extraordinary voice and
undeniable charisma, make him an exceptional showman and a major
artist of the history of blues, who enjoys playing as the sun goes down,
outside, to see the crowd and have them experience his music with
him… So Juan is the ideal place!

ARCHIE SHEPP
A socially and politically committed composer, pianist, singer, playwright
and poet, a griot fighting to defend the civil rights of black people,
spearheading Pan-Africanism, Archie Shepp, lord of the saxophone and
living legend of jazz, on a par with Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane
(with whom he collaborated for several years), is returning to the «Jazz
à Juan» stage where he first performed in 1970. Ever since, rolling his
eyes under his black felt hat, wild and free, as enthusiastic as ever about
debates and music, he has been continuing his impressive career.
Archie Shepp grew up in Philadelphia, a town in which he knew trumpetplayer Lee Morgan who lived in the same neighbourhood. It was the
saxophonist Jimmy Heath who introduced him to this instrument, but
above all John Coltrane’s playing which fascinated him the most and to
which he has listened the most in the course of his life. In New York,
transforming meetings into opportunities, he became one of the leaders
© Monette Berthomier and founders of free jazz with Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra and Cecil
Taylor. Very active in the 1960s, throughout his long and controversial
career Archie Shepp has always distinguished himself for his political commitment and his fondness for the
blues. «I am jazz: it’s my life,» he confides.
Concerts in Juan : 1970, 1975, 1977, 1993, 1995.
CHARLES LLOYD NEW QUARTET
Featuring Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers, and Eric Harland
In 1966, the American saxophonist and flute-player
Charles Lloyd made waves in Juan with his astonishing
rhythmic technique: young Keith Jarrett was at the piano
(aged 21), Cecil McBee on bass and Jack DeJohnette
at the drums. «The sound was unbelievable: I’ve never
heard anything like it in France. The tenor was grandiose,
like Coltrane or Rollins, the same kind of volume and
low notes», wrote Frédéric Goaty (Jazz Magazine).
The first jazz musician to sell more than one million
copies of an album (“Forest Flower”), Charles Lloyd has
performed on stage with the The Doors,The Byrds,The

Beach Boys and even Grateful Dead, influencing other
musicians such as Miles Davis to a considerable extent.
A member of the ECM Records team, Lloyd knew how to create a style all his own, combining permanent
musical evolution with firmly anchored tradition through his partiality for jazz standards. “I’m always on
the lookout for that perfect interval, that sound which reveals everything. Until I’ve discovered it, I’ll just
have to keep on searching! I can’t take anything for granted.” The result in 2015: a new album, a tour, and
a NEA Jazz Masters award. Fifty years after his first performance on the stage of the Gould pine grove,
Charles Lloyd continues to impress!
Concerts in Juan : 1966, 1982, 1989, 2002.
MONDAY 18th JULY
GREGORY PORTER
© Shawn Peters
Today’s most beautiful voice is that of a man wearing
his timeless «apple cap», a giant in his forties almost
two metres tall, a big-hearted gentleman in a three
piece suit. Gregory Porter, after having patiently
awaited his hour of glory on the stages of musicals,
has made a name for himself in the course of three
years thanks to his exceptional tone, inherited
from gospel tradition and from listening lovingly
to Nat King Cole. Wynton Marsalis paid him high
praise with his usual simplicity: «A fantastic young
singer».
Everyone remembers his superb performance
in summer 2014 on the «Jazz à Juan» stage, and his unforgettable duet with Stevie Wonder. His voice,
reminiscent of those of many other legendary crooners and great names in soul (such as Marvin Gaye
and Donny Hathaway), is one which you can’t forget, filling the air whilst in perfect harmony with the
accompanying instruments. All the more so since this discreet baritone, rewarded with a “Grammy Award”
in 2014, is also a skilled composer, masterfully blending jazz and soul and on stage he proves to be a
remarkable showman, as sensitive as he is generous.

HUGH COLTMAN
After having performed all over Europe for five years and having released
seven albums with the blues group « The Hoax », Hugh Coltman, praised
by the press for his « unique voice » decided to take a step back just at
the moment when his fame was beginning to extend beyond the realm
of connoisseurs. It was an encounter with pianist Eric Legnini, on the
programme “One Shot Not” by Manu Katché, that had him tumbling into
the world of jazz. Hugh Coltman quickly found the means to express his
full talent in this musical style featuring so many landmarks and legends.
Starting with Nat King Cole, whose voice and songs had nurtured his
childhood: Hugh wondered about the daily life of a black American
musician subject in those days to the constraints of segregation, a daily
life so far from the heritage bequeathed to us by this unique singer with
his lasting smile, the first Afro-American to host a TV show, who had sold
© D.R.
millions of singles and got his name into the « Hall of Fame ». Hence his
final album « Shadows », inspired by the dark and marked face of the everfamous performer of « Nature Boy ». A true lesson in elegance, with the divine lightness of a tight-rope
walker’s voice and, throughout, a discourse full of musical intelligence.

DIANA KRALL
She has become one of the great ladies of jazz, performing now
at all major music halls throughout the world, and the Gould pine
grove is delighted to welcome her back. If Diana Krall (with her
long blond hair and eyes that would make saints swoon) remains
a singer of quality swing, touching listeners instantly through her
veiled tone and perfect elocution, this year on the occasion of her
new release, the album “Wallflowers”, she has no qualms about
breaking with convention and striking out in a whole new direction
in terms of style and music...
Diana Krall could have continued churning out indefinitely those
bright covers of standards which gained her recognition on an
international scale at the brilliant start of her career, twenty or so
years ago. But the thing is, after having dished up a repertoire of
© Bryan Adams
covers from the golden age of classic jazz (1920s to 1960s), from
ragtime to electric rock, with the talent for which she is famous, the Lady reinvents herself and this time
she’s making close ties with pop songs from the 1970s, the ones she played when performing at piano bars,
hits by the Eagles, Elton John and The Mamas & the Papas for which she had a fondness. A collection of
pop songs, gracious and inspired, sung in her own distinctive way with her technique of setting her voice
far ahead, delicate and intense.

Richard Bona & Mandekan Cubano
First of all, imagine an artist as talented as Jaco
Pastorious, with a voice as fluid as George Benson’s
and with Joao Gilberto’s sense of song and harmony,
all this set off with African culture, and you have
Richard Bona, the « Sting of Africa », honoured in
2004 as « best international artist of the year » at
the French annual awards ceremony « Victoires du
jazz » and rewarded with the Grand Prix Jazz by the
SACEM in 2012: real recognition for this artist who
now numbers among the few African musicians to
have attained international acclaim.
©JC Thibaut
With his ardent sense of groove and a torrential
style of play, with his unrivalled precision, Richard Bona is one of today’s most sought after and talented
bass players. At the same time he is pursuing a solo career (6 albums to his name), which has transformed
him into a true star in the jazz world, since he is also a songwriter and singer touched by grace. With the
combo Mandekan Cubano, he is returning to Juan with a repertoire permeated by Cuban and traditional
African music, all deliciously spiced up with the charm of Mandekan words. An exalting mix of cultures, a
magnificent contribution to perpetuating the universal language of music.
Concerts in Juan : 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014
SELAH SUE
She has conquered the world with her soul diva voice, her Flemish
mane (“that bold, ballooning blond updo”) and gained recognition
from peers as prestigious as Prince or Meshell Ndegeocello. Born
in Leefdaal, in the suburbs of Louvain, Sanne Putseys chose her
stage name as a tribute to “Selah”, a song composed by her idol
Lauryn Hill. After her hit single “Raggamuffin”, she then sold one
million copies of her first album, released worldwide four years
ago.
Wavering with stunning vigour and sensitivity between Amy
Winehouse-style retro soul, ranges of electro-soul, trip hop
interludes and a multitude of house beats, Selah is ever present
with her warm, powerful, deep and slightly rasping voice, sometimes
giving a false impression of fragility, extending the notes, evocating
© DR the sweetness of a girl from Ipanema, then launching herself into
daring harmonic capers with no fear of falling. Impressive in every
way, uncompromising, baring her soul, shy, arousing, bewitching, looking as though butter wouldn’t melt in
her mouth.

MARCUS MILLER
Crowned with two Grammy® Awards, but also an Edison
Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz and a «Victoire du
Jazz» award in 2013 for the whole of his career in France,
Marcus Miller is not only a unique bassist and an extraordinary
multi-intrumentalist, he is also a composer and a producer
gifted with exceptional talent. The legendary album «Tutu»
composed and produced for Miles Davis secured him world
fame when he was only 25 years old. A good half-century
later, he can well claim to have made a fabulous progression.
As the child of the cosmopolitan Big Apple, he learned music
in the street of Queens as well as at Manhattan’s famous
«High School of Music and Art ».
© Gilles Lefrancq
Headlining at Jazz à Juan in 2009 with Stanley Clarke and
Victor Wooten, ambassador for the 2010 edition with the
Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo, back in 2011 for a superb «Tribute to Miles», then in 2013 with
a new album «Renaissance», Marcus Miller delighted last year’s audience in the pine grove with his very
special guest: Ibrahim Maalouf. Since 1996 and his first appearance on stage in Juan, has never cease to
surprise and astonish spectators, giving his all and winning them over.
He is returning to the stage of the Gould pine grove with the compositions of his new album « Afrodeezia»,
blending jazz, funk and African rhythms.
His concerts Jazz à Juan : 1996, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015.

ROBIN McKELLE
Hailing from the States, Robin McKelle is influenced by great names
in soul but also sixties divas. Through her we feel the spirit presence
of the greatest lady performers: Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Tina
Turner. She is pervasive and her concerts full of energy, generosity and
enthusiasm. Desire is a form of energy, energy a form of desire, and
while she breathes new life into the standards of the past, she brings
it all into the present, working miracles through the simple intonation
of single syllables. Her feline voice is relaxed, a warm and powerful
contralto, with just the right dose of soul…
In singing at the same concerts as artists such as Herbie Hancock,
Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard and Jon Secada, Robin has a
steadily growing number of fans, moved by the happiness she shows
in performing, travelling and promoting all the music she loves, with a

perfect balance of powerful swing and ballads full of feeling. Far from
churning out formatted covers of great classics, the singer proves her
worth as a marvellous writer/composer, compiling a repertoire of catchy and bluesy songs with all the
sincerity and temperament of the true spirit of Memphis, hometown to Stax, Otis Redding and Al Green!
Concerts in Juan : 2007, 2012.
PAOLO CONTE
His salt-and-pepper moustache is as internationally famous as his talent!
He is known for his husky voice, varying and suggestive, his piano-playing
and his face, his nonchalent style tinged with nostalgia, his ironic and
melancholic texts and the way he gazes at his audience. Originally he
wrote for others, in particular Adriano Celentano, to whom he served up
on a silver platter the song Azzurro in 1968. It took until the middle of the
next decade for him to decide to go one step further. His first success,Via
con me (It’s Wonderful - 1981) was a triumph, as was “Come Di” a few
years later.
A mysterious and comical jazzman, crooner, author-composer, conductor,
writer, philosopher: a funny little man. No extravagant look often to be
found in showbusiness, but an inventiveness which worked wonders
in everything he created. As a composer, he gave birth to music which
DR
upheld a century of memories (jazz, Latin-American rhythms, blues, rock),
while remaining unique. As an author, he vacillated between surrealism and social chronicles, derision and
tenderness, creating an atmosphere which charms and bewitches. As an performer, he knows how to be
appealing, roguish, jeering and mischevious all in one, using his voice’s potential to the full. He sets all this
off with the timeless elegance of those who are beautiful on the inside.

AMERICAN GOSPEL Jr
© Gilles Lefrancq
Originating from the famous show «100 voices of Gospel» back in 1998, American Gospel Jr - one of
today’s most original and acclaimed gospel bands - has never ceased to travel the world to share their love
for music, for their fellowmen and for Gospel. Their concert is far more than a simple concert: it is the
meeting of form and depth, body and soul, with all the talent and enthusiasm required to make their show
a moment of a rare intensity.
Combining tradition and modernity, jazzy rhythms and rich singing, coloured with that religious fervour
from which Gospel first sprang, the group happily performs the classics of their repertoire, as well as the
eternal and ever popular hits such as «When the Saints Go Marching In» and «Oh Happy Days» and lesser
known texts, set to rhythms full of blues, rhythm‘n’blues or soul music. The group is directed by Reverend
Jean Carpenter, a generous artist with an impressive vocal range and just as much intense conviction.
Concert in Juan: 2015.
JAZZ OFF 2016
Just like Avignon and from the very beginning, following on from those legendary and confidential jam
sessions of the early years, Jazz à Juan has its «Off festival». During the festival, all types of jazz can
be heard in the streets of Antibes Juan-les-Pins. The whole town grooves to the rhythm of these sunny
celebrations.
Because Jazz à Juan is more than just the major concert-events given in the legendary Gould pine grove.
Jazz à Juan is a Festival in all its splendour, a unique kind of party, forming a triple unity of time, place
and action.
The time is one of holidays.
The place, Antibes Juan-les-Pins, where the average number of residents and tourists climbs to 220,000 in
summer.
The action, the multitude of events surrounding the traditional concerts on the main stage.
« Jazz Off » means :
2 open-air stages place De-Gaulle in Antibes and in the little pine grove in Juan-les-Pins, welcoming
around 2,000 people each day.
1 stage «Jazz around midnight», after the concerts, in the legendary setting «Carrefour de la Joie»,
one of the famous places of Juan nightlife immortalised by Sidney Bechet.
1 evening «Best Of the Off festival», with around 100 musicians performing in the streets and on the
squares of Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, to thousands of spectators making no secret of their zest for life and
their desire to share jazz in all its forms...
A photo exhibition at the Antibes Juan-les-Pins conference centre
and Jazz Off will continue this winter with the presentation of its new collection “Autumn-Winter”…
© Gilles Lefrancq
Each year, counting the «In» and «Off» festivals, «Jazz à Juan» attracts well over 50,000 spectators.

Jazz à Juan encourageS RECYCLING !
In keeping with our commitments for the « Quality
Tourism » label, during last year’s festival we welcomed
2 recycling Ambassadors from the CASA network. Their
mission: encourage the festival-goers to recycle more
using the equipment already in place. In 2015 for the first
time, we requested that our recycled waste be quantified
and analysed: in total, 1 ton 200 kg were gathered by our
team the Green Brigade, with a refusal rate (wrongly sorted) of 14%, this is
the record to be beaten in 2016.
This does not include the 14 kg of plastic bottle tops - 4 kg more than
the previous year! – collected by the charity organisation Les Bouchons
d’Amour 06, who sells them to a manufacturer of recycled objects and
100% of the profits are used to help the handicapped.
