Welcome Back! - Plain Local Schools
Welcome Back!
We have been working hard to prepare for another excellent
school year in the Plain Local School District!
We are pleased to offer many new programs for students
this year. The STEM school will open at GlenOak as well as a
new High School of Business, which is featured on page 2. We
are working closely with local colleges, universities and businesses on these and other programs to ensure our students
are getting the real-world experiences and training they need
to be successful in their career path of interest.
We are expanding our technology integration to include 1 to 1
initiatives in both 6th and 9th grades. This program provides
an iPad for every sixth grader and chrome book (laptop) for
every ninth grade student. This enables us to mix traditional
teaching methods with the latest in technology so that our
students gain a global perspective and are well equipped to
handle the digital age in which we live. This will also be critical
to the success of our students on new state testing that will
be done completely online during the 2014-2015 school year.
We are excited to introduce several new building leaders in
the district. A special welcome to Barr Elementary Principal
Ann Bartley; GlenOak High School Academy Principal Chicola
Whitfield; and Oakwood Assistant Principal James Easterling. You can learn more about these talented administrators
on page 3 of Plain Paper.
As mentioned in our last issue, we have a few administra-
tors that are familiar to our families but will be in new places
this year. We welcome former teacher and Saturday Enrichment Director Mark Yocum as Principal of Warstler Elementary; at Glenwood Intermediate this year will be Principal
Linnea Olbon and Assistant Principal Brett Niarchos; and
Jerad Buck has joined the team as an Academy Principal at
GlenOak High School. You will have an opportunity to meet our
administrative team, talented teachers, and amazing support staff at our open house events that begin in mid August.
We hope you will join us on Monday, August 19, 2013 at
8:30am in the GlenOak Theater for the Plain Local School
District’s Annual Convocation. We are planning an exciting
event that we hope will serve as an energizing spark to the
2013-2014 school year.
Throughout the morning we will introduce the new members
of our teaching team, celebrate the start of the school year,
and learn more about the many excellent opportunities available to students, staff and community members.
On behalf of the students, staff and administration of the
Plain Local Schools, I would like to thank you for your support
of our district and our community. We look forward to celebrating the beginning of an excellent year with you!
Sincerely,
Brent May, Superintendent
New Initiative Puts Technology In The Hands
Of Every Plain Local 6th And 9th Grader
The last few years Plain Local has been developing plans to
give each student access to a computer for use at school
and home, an arrangement that is known as one-to-one (1:1)
computing. The program promotes a technology-based education, giving students instant access to information beyond
the classroom.
It is equally important because students will use computers for standardized testing in the 2014-15 school year. The
program allows Plain to teach students in the same way they
are being tested. It is also a cost and time saving measure
that will cut down on the amount of copies and paper being
used during the school year.
This year students in sixth and ninth grade will be able to
take the computers home with them after school in order
to access lessons and complete homework assignments.
Book reports may be replaced by podcasts, speeches can be
produced digitally with music, and video clips on YouTube can
support graphics and classroom discussions.
For an annual lease of $50, students in sixth grade will
have their own iPad and students in ninth grade their own
Chrome Books (laptop). The lease covers the cost of damage
up to $150 and provides a level of accountability.
In ninth grade, the computers will stay with the student
except summer breaks — when it’s debugged and software
is upgraded — and then is returned to the school when the
student graduates.
Just giving students a laptop doesn’t automatically translate into learning. “It has to be about more than just having
a computer,” Technology Director Joe Andrews said. “We
are changing the way we teach because it changes the way
people learn.”
Plagiarism, trustworthy information, and cyber bullying are
issues the district has addressed. Policies have been developed to define how the computer can and can’t be used. Students and their parents will sign usage agreements before
being given the technology.
Policies are enforced through software on the computers. It
blocks access to websites deemed inappropriate and allows
school employees to see what is on multiple student screens
at any time. The software also allows the school to message
students or to lockdown a laptop at any time.
“Computers allow students to receive one-on-one education and progress at their own rate,” Andrews added. “Technology is second nature to them, and we know they will adapt
quickly. Studies show we should see higher achievement
scores as well.”
The District plans to expand the 1:1 program, providing a
new Chrome Book to freshman every year. The result will be
that every student at GlenOak High School will have a laptop
to use over his or her entire four years.

The GlenOak High School
of Business™ is designed
much like a college business
administration program.
Students take approximately one course per semester,
beginning with an introduction to business. The program continues with courses
in various business functions
concluding with the capstone
course, Business Strategies, which requires implementation of the principles
addressed throughout the
entire program.
Students actively learn
core business skills that ultimately lead to career success. Here’s how the program
delivers on these goals:
• College-like business
administration sequence of
courses
• Challenging project with
both team-based and individual components

Online Payment Option Available
With No Usage Fees For Service
The Plain Local School District is pleased to offer parents a convenient way to pay their child’s fees
and manage meal accounts over the Internet by using
PayForIt.net, an online school management tool. There
is no charge for using the service during the 2013-2014
school year. If you used the service last year, your user
name and password are the same.
Parents or guardians may go to the Pay For It link
on the plainlocal.org website or visit www.payforit.net.
The program allows the user to create a secure online account where they can add money to their child’s
account with a credit card, debit card or even an electronic check. Parents can have peace of mind knowing
that students will have money available for meals, and
that the money will only be used for breakfast or lunch
instead of other items.
Parents can view their child’s account balance and
make payments any time of day. Parents may also view
what the student has purchased. Families with multiple
children enrolled in the District can add money to each
child’s account during the same transaction.
The District will continue to accept cash and checks
for school fees and meal purchases along with payments made through the PayForIt system.
Clear Book Bag Safe Option
At Glenwood Intermediate
This year students will be
permitted to carry clear
backpacks between classes
at Glenwood Intermediate
School. Many students
have requested the ability
to carry book bags during the school day. Taking
in consideration safety
issues, the school is giving
students the option of using a clear backpack.
Students may continue
to bring regular book bags
to and from school, but
during the school day, if
they choose to put their
books and supplies in a
bag to carry from class to
class, it must be clear. The
clear book bag is optional;
students may continue to
carry their items from class
to class in their arms.
District To Use 2-Hour Delay
Ohio winters can sometimes produce severe weather, and the Plain Local School
District administration understands that the decision
to close or delay schools in
bad weather impacts families. They also understand
that students are better
served by being in school.
In cases of inclement
weather, Plain Local has
implementing a two-hour delay schedule, along with the
more traditional cancellation
procedures.
The safety of students is
always a top priority. A twohour delay enables district
personnel to have additional
time to assess local weather
conditions and allows road
crews more time to improve
driving conditions.
Families are encouraged
to make arrangements for
students in the event that
either situation - a cancellation OR a two-hour delay
- occurs.

Plain School Menus Meet Tough
New Federal Nutrition Standards
This fall, Plain Local school
cafeterias are meeting
tough new federal nutrition
standards for school meals,
ensuring that meals are
healthy and well-balanced
and provide students all the
nutrition they need to succeed at school.
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains,
and they must meet strict
limits on saturated fat and
portion size. Beginning this
school year, lunches will meet
additional standards requiring:
• Age-appropriate calorie
limits
• Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students
must take at least one serving of produce)

Plain Local Foundation 2012-13 Report Of Gifts
The Plain Local Schools
Foundation was started to
help ensure quality educational experiences by serving
as a receptacle for special
private gifts and funds on
behalf of Plain Local Schools.
Funds have been established
to benefit innovative programs across all disciplines
of education that are outside of the normal operating
budget of the school district. Over the years alumni
and Foundation friends
have contributed more than
$600,000 to the foundation endowment.
In addition, the Foundation
raises monies for elementary
grants, scholarships and district-wide events while also
growing the endowment fund.
Monies raised are focused
on the need to continually
develop new resources that
enable the Foundation to
address the program and
scholarship needs of the
Plain Local School District
and support the District’s
educational philosophies.
