STUDENTS' ARTWORK: Congratulations to the following students as their work was selected to the Scholastic Art Awards of Nebraska Art Show! John U.'s acrylic skull/face, Samantha J.'s monochromatic self portrait, and Kaylee Y.'s charcoal self portrait all received Honorable Mention Awards. Kaylee Y.'s pencil self portrait received a Silver Key award. Out of the 3320 artworks that were submitted from grades 7-12 across the state of Nebraska, only 1250 were chosen for the show. The artworks will be on display in Omaha at the Omaha Public Schools TAC from the end of February until the end of March. COUGARS IN COLLEGE: Congratulations to Amanda Slater and Anna Wagemann, who have had papers accepted to this year's (30th annual) National Conference on Undergraduate Research at UNC Asheville, April 7-9. Amanda's paper is "Adult Influences in the Construction of Youth War Diaries." Anna's paper is "The Monstrous, The Mysterious, and the Mystic: Reanimating Childhood Classics through the Feared City." Anna's paper has also been accepted for presentation at the annual Children's Literature Association Conference in Columbus, OH, June 9-11. This is a particularly notable accomplishment as the conference is an annual professional conference that rarely admits undergraduates. Amanda's paper, meanwhile, has also been accepted (in poster form) for the prestigious "Posters on the Hill" at Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, April 19-20. Hers was one of only 60 posters selected. Usually only one or two students from the entire state of Nebraska are accepted. This is the second time a UNK English student has had a poster accepted (the last was in 2011). At 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, there will be a Ribbon Cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Greenhouse and to kickoff the new Career Pathway programs in Business, Agriculture, Graphic Arts, Medical, and Drafting/Engineering/Architecture. Discussions continue about plans for new construction to house future Manufacturing, Welding, and Culinary Arts Programs. Architects from BVH have met and will continue to meet with staff to discuss needs for the upcoming projects. Planning is also moving forward to build a new Performing Arts Center and practice area for the South Central Unified wrestling team. This will allow the district to close the Fairfield site and continue to operate more efficiently. Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson school boards have unanimously voted to develop a new Unified Agreement. In the past, Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson have shared the same budget and tax rate/levy. The new Unified agreement will provide both districts the flexibility of having their own budget, while sharing the same tax rate/levy. In the future, Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy Creek local boards will be able to decide for themselves on matters such as educational programming, building projects, and size of staff. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the rate of inflation between 2010 and 2014 was 2 percent. During that time, South Central Nebraska Unified School District increased spending by an average of less than one percent (00.80%) or $88,488 per year. In 2010-11, South Central Unified total expenses were $10,550,191. Last year the district spent $10,992,635. Since 2010-11, South Central Unified become more efficient, while adding all day preschool, a K-12 one-to-one computer initiative, new reading, math, science, and social studies curriculum with intervention materials, middle school, a Career Pathways Program, SCALE Program, Spanish at Lawrence-Nelson, Art at Lawrence-Nelson, and elementary robotics and programming. All K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th grade students reached their goals with only two fourth graders missing the mark. The students that achieved the goal received the reinforcement for their hard work of going to the Hastings YMCA. Students played and swam all afternoon and really enjoyed the time. The following students achieved 300% of their goal or higher and will get a special luncheon with Dr. Gilson: 300% Garrett Fischer, Aidan Petersen, Morgan Petr, Trevon Watts, Porter Ferrell, Conner Calderon, Christian Shaw, Chloe Stevens; 400% or higher Kaden Whitmore, Kaleb Whitmore; 500% or higher Keaton Corman and Zac Corman. Spelling Bee—Fifth Graders Aisley Schliep, Sean Heaton, Blaine Tessman have qualified for the County Spelling Bee; Itzamna Diaz is the alternate, which will be held at SC Middle school on February 10th. IXL—Students have been given access to an online math and language arts reinforcement website. Students answer questions based on skills aligned with Nebraska State Standards. As the students master skills they are awarded medals within the program. We have several students whom have achieved 30 or more grade level standards in either math or language arts and some have achieved as many as 100 or more. The following students have mastered 75 or more skills: Kaden Whitmore, Ethan Floth, Kaeden Schmidt; Mastered 100 or more: Ethan Shaw and Rowan Jarosik. machines were left at Sandy Creek for two weeks for students to experiment with. Chad returned and an open house was held so that students could show parents what they had access to. Gary Needham, ESU 9 Robotics--For the next five weeks, Gary Needham will be at the school personally or via a robot to instruct all 2nd-5th Grade students on Robots that are either supplied by ESU9 or purchased by the school. Students are learning programming sequences and the basics of robotics through this exposure. PBIS—The pilot and co-pilot for the elementary attended a meeting in Lincoln with the state director listening to strategies to improve our model. We continue to reinforce students school-wide who follow the schools expectations on a weekly and monthly basis. Our last assembly acknowledged those students who have not had any TR sheets (infractions), who have had perfect attendance for both second quarter and first semester, along with all the students who achieved or exceeded their AR goal. Classroom teachers also reinforce their classes when they have reached specific goals as determined by the class. Our referrals for the months of November and December were significantly less than the previous months. NeSA Writing—The fourth grade students finished the NeSA writing test on Friday. Two separate 40 minute sessions are needed for student to write a rough draft and then a final copy that will be submitted for state grading with the hope that students will meet or exceed the state standards. Kindness Retreat—The fifth grade students attended a Youth Frontiers Kindness Retreat sponsored by ESU9 schools Adam Central, Sandy Creek, Lawrence Nelson, Hampton, Giltner, and Harvard. The focus of the leadership conference is to emphasis a core character trait that is a proven catalyst for making schools a better place. The Kindness Retreat was a high-energy day to give student tools to develop empathy, promote kindness and prevent bullying. Garrett Orcutt, Alison Story, Tiffney Schweer, Tristan Hancock, and Corey Lipovsky were asked to be high school facilities for the day. 2nd Grade Students went to Christmas at Stuhr museum. The students got to experience what life would have been like at the turn of the century with only a wood burning stove, no running water, and a handmade/homemade Christmas. Family Fun Night—On January 11th the Kindergarten/First grade level teams hosted their second Family Fun Night. The theme was Laura Rumenoff books. Activities were planned around the them of Taking a Mouse to a Movie . . . Give a Pig a Pancake etc. Attendance again was good as 114 participants enjoyed the activities. The second/third grade-level teams will be hosting their second event on Leap Day, February 29th with a super hero theme. NPPD Robotics Lab—Chad Johnson from NPPD offered their lab for our students to explore for two weeks. Chad and Gary Needham made a presentation to students K-5 so that students had an opportunity to sample what the robots would do. Kindergarten Musical American Symbols on Parade Friday, February 26, 2016 2:30 in the High School Band Room Parents, Grandparents, Relatives & family friends are welcome! ACT OF KINDNESS: Christmas has always been a time of giving and to Teammate mentor, Sandy Livgren and Sandy Creek Middle School 7th Grade Teammate mentee, Meadow Houseman that has not changed. Sandy and Meadow decided to make a tied fleece blanket together during their time together and then give it away to someone who needed it. The two of them spent two meetings in December to cut and tie the blanket, which was made out of a purple and pink “Hello Kitty” patterned fleece material. After they finished, they brainstormed a few different possibilities of places they could take their blanket. Sandy and Meadow decided to take it to Crossroads in Hastings. They made arrangements to meet at Crossroads on a Saturday in December to deliver it to a 2 yr. old girl. They wrapped it up and gave it to the young girl and as soon as she opened the present, she began cuddling with the blanket. Meadow said there were a few people with tears in their eyes as they watched this “act of kindness”. To quote Meadow, she said, “It was awesome! It made me feel good to make something for someone else who needed it!” The two of them enjoyed working on this project together very much. PowerSchool Grades Parents I hope you found your child’s grades to be good from first semester and were satisfied with their effort. As your child’s Principal I view all these grades and am impressed with many students and the motivation they have. I recently took honor roll pictures and will be posting these pictures at both the Middle School and High School. I always encourage you to keep an eye on your child’s grades as I do work with many students who I believe could do better and need to focus more energy on their academics. We have found that many students need to make sure they complete assignments on time and get them turned in and they will find themselves doing well. I also would encourage your child to make sure they prepare themselves for test and quizzes. If the teacher provides extra credit than great encourage them to do it. Otherwise just make sure they do their work correctly the first time and than their will be no need to ask for extra credit. With Focus Time last period of the school day we have provided time for students to focus on their academics. If they are struggling academically we can line them up with their respective teacher that can help them one on one to improve their current academic standing. With this option students need to be taking advantage of help that is provided. If a student is still falling behind we have been keeping students after school so they get their work done. If you have any further questions about what we are doing or how we motivate students to be successful please contact me. State NeSA Writing The juniors did their state writing on January 19th and were all here so it was finished during 2nd and 3rd period that day. The 8th grade students did their state writing on January 26th at the Middle School. Their respective teachers have prepared them well to be successful and to hopefully meet or exceed the state test in writing. PBIS The Middle School PBIS team attended trainings on January 6th and 7th. The team members are: Kathy Brennfoerder, Darcie Boman, Michaela Goracke, Keri Dane, Robyn Vonspreckleson and myself. They are on Level I and continue to move forward at a good pace teaching all the non-classroom expectations to the students. The Middle School will be applying for Level II this spring, which then moves into teaching all the classroom expectations. The High School Pilot and Co-Pilot which consist of Crystal Hassenstab and I attended training on January 11th. We primarily discussed teaching social skills as you need to have a good plan in order to do so and to provide evidence before you can even apply for Level III. We have just created a schedule of when we will be teaching these lessons on Friday’s during Focus Time. Teachers continue to work on these lesson plans during Wednesday and Thursday Focus Times. Focus on Social Skills – Below you will see what social skills we will be focused on. Peer Relationships - offering help, being appropriate online Self-Management - controlling temper, compromising, being appropriate online Academic - completing work independently, plagiarism Assertion - meeting new people, initiating conversation, acknowledging compliments, how to properly introduce yourself and begin a conversation, respectfully (name/name, eye/eye, hand/hand, heart/heart) Accelerated Reader The teachers did an excellent job in working with students and motivating them to meet their AR goal for the first semester. All but four students at the High School and three at the Middle School met their goal. Those students meeting their goal enjoyed their incentive trip to Kearney. On December 14th the High School went to the Big Apple in the morning and then went to a movie the Mocking Jay Part II in the afternoon. The Middle School closed out their first semester by going to the Big Apple on December 18th and spent the whole day there. Students and Staff had a great time together bowling, golfing, and laser tag. Those students meeting their goal also did not have to take their semester final test, which might have been the biggest incentive a student could earn. Clay County Spelling Bee The Clay County Spelling Bee is February 10, 2016 at 3:pm at the Middle School in Clay Center. FFA Update Since our last update the Sandy Creek FFA members have been hard at work. We would like to thank all of the community members that made our annual Christmas Green’s Fundraiser a success. The chapter will use this money to support members who will be competing at state and other leadership functions this upcoming spring. In November chapter members prepared for district livestock judging and Ag Communications. Chase DeVries placed 38th out of 190 junior livestock judgers. We had about 20 members show up for pizza and card games. January 7, 2016 brought the addition of two new goats to the FFA program. Johnny and June were born in the early evening hours of a snow storm. The new goats are doing great and will be exhibited by FFA members this summer at the Clay County Fair. January is also bringing a new critter to the school farm. We are adding a llama that was secured from USDA-MARC to be out with the goats. The last addition to the Ag department in January was the purchase of our new Solo Edition AGCO Drone. Students were able to fly the drone during good weather and we are looking forward to using the field mapping software this spring in class.
