It remains our sincere hope that through word and deed,
education and example, we young and old one heritage
or another, would all come to know that our care for

of hope and inspiration it is our intention to publish

in the course of the week to “plant a rose” so to speak
along the way as we carry the cross in the glory of the
victory “He” won. Our part though small can and does

In Luke’s gospel Christ reminds us that
everything we are and everything we have
came to us as a gift from God. We must
grow our gifts and return them generously
to be used in God’s work.
A Memorial Mass in the intention of our former pastor,
Fr. David Cortesi will be celebrated on the first anniversary
of his passing, Wednesday, OCTOBER 15 at 7:00pm in
the church. All parishioners are invited and encouraged
to attend.
A reception will be held immediately following
the Mass in the Cafeteria.
Gifts of our time, talent and treasure to our parish and our
Archdiocese are an important part of our commitment to
proper stewardship of God’s gifts. Those who have contributed to the 2008 Annual Catholic Appeal are not only
demonstrating their stewardship, but also are providing
critical resources necessary to continue the ministries and
services of the Archdiocese.
On behalf of Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. and the
many beneficiaries of the Annual Appeal, thank you for
completing your pledge payments. Every gift is important and appreciated.
On behalf of Mater Christi Council and the Knights of
Columbus, we wish to express our most sincere gratitude
to Father Jason Torba and the parishioners of Saint Ferdinand Church. The enthusiastic welcome given us during
our membership drive has left us grateful beyond words.
As a result of our membership drive, our council has been
blessed with many new members who wish to be of service to our parish and community. Many more of you

Baby Bottle Project
Starting in two weeks, October 25 and 26, we will ask
our parishioners to participate in a special fundraiser to
help The Women Center. Your nickels and dimes do
make a difference that is why we ask you
to participate in this project. It is easy as
one-two-three.
On October 25/26 weekend you will pick
up a baby bottle after the Masses. Than
you will take it home and any time you
have spare change you can drop it in the
bottle. Two weeks later, on November 8/9 weekend
you will return the baby bottle before all the Masses.
Thanks to your spare change, the Women Center can hire
counselors who give women the hope and courage that
they need to choose life. The center will also provide free
groceries, clothes for women and their children, diapers,
toys, car seats and other financial needs. This is wonderful opportunity for parishioners of all ages, including children, to be able to work together to support life.

The Challenge of
Forming Consciences
for Faithful Citizenship
Our nation faces political challenges that demand urgent moral choices.
We are a nation at war, with all of its
human costs; a country often divided by race and ethnicity; a nation of immigrants struggling with immigration. We
are an affluent society where too many live in poverty; part of a global community confronting terrorism and facing
urgent threats to our environment; a culture built on families, where some now question the value of marriage and
family life. We pride ourselves on supporting human rights, but we fail even to protect the fundamental right to life,
especially for unborn children. We bishops seek to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with the
truth, so they can make sound moral choices in addressing these
challenges. We do not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person
and his or her properly formed conscience.
Why Does the Church Teach About Issues Effecting
Public Policy?
The Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the
moral character of society is a requirement of our faith,
a part of the mission given to us by Jesus Christ. Faith
helps us see more clearly the truth about human life and
dignity that we also understand through human reason.
As people of both faith and reason, Catholics are called
to bring truth to political life and to practice Christ’s
commandment to “love one another” (Jn 13:34).
According to Pope Benedict XVI, “charity must
animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and therefore
also their political activity, lived as ‘social
charity’” (Encyclical Deus Caritas Est, no. 29). The
United States Constitution protects the right of
individual believers and religious bodies to participate
and speak out without government interference,
favoritism, or discrimination. Civil law should
recognize and protect the Church’s right and
responsibility to participate in society without
abandoning our central moral convictions. Our nation’s
tradition of pluralism is enhanced, not threatened, when
religious groups and people of faith bring their
convictions into public life. The Catholic community
brings to the political dialogue a consistent moral
framework and broad experience serving those in need.

How Does the Church Help Catholics to Address
Political and Social Questions?
A Well-Formed Conscience The Church equips its
members to address political questions by helping them
develop well-formed consciences. “Conscience is a
judgment of reason whereby the human person
recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act. . . .
[Every
person] is obliged to follow faithfully what he [or she]
knows to be just andright” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, no. 1778). We Catholics have a lifelong
obligation to form our consciences in accord with
human reason, enlightened by the teaching of Christ as
it comes to us through the Church.
Who in the Church Should Participate in Political
Life?
In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a
virtue, and participation in political life is a moral
obligation. As Catholics, we should be guided more by

„The Women’s Center”

„miesiącem szacunku dla życia”. Odkąd aborcja przestała
być uważana za przestępstwo, są prowadzone badania na
zarodkowych komórkach macierzystych [embryonic stem
cell research] oraz klonowanie. Musimy powrócić do
podstawowych wartości moralnych uznając świętość
życia od momentu poczęcia aż do naturalnej śmierci. W
naszym ośrodku „The Women’s Center” uratowaliśmy w
ubiegłym roku ponad 1,000 dzieci oraz ich matki przed
grozą aborcji.
Archidiecezja Chicago planuje specjalne obchody
tzw. „40 Dni dla Życia” [40 Days for Life], które będą
polegały na spokojnej modlitewnej obecności przed
aborcyjnymi klinikami. Będą trwały przez całą dobę w
ciągu 40 dni od 24 września do 2 listopada. The Women’s

taką butelkę. Butelkę należy wypełnić drobnymi pieniążkami które nam zazwyczaj zostają po zakupach.
Wypełnioną butelkę będzie można przynieść do kościoła
w dniach 8/9 listopada. Butelki zostaną przekazane do
Centrum dla Kobiet, które pomaga ciężarnym kobietą w
trudnych sytuacjach.

Apostolski Ruch Bożego Miłosierdzia zrodził się z
charyzmatu i doświadczenia mistycznego św. Siostry
Faustyny. Podejmuje on zadanie głoszenia światu orędzia
Miłosierdzia przez czyn, słowo i modlitwę oraz dąży do
zjednoczenia z Bogiem drogą ufności wobec Niego i
miłosierdzia względem bliźnich.
Apostolski Ruch Bożego Miłosierdzia rozwijał się wraz z
rozszerzaniem się kultu Miłosierdzia Bożego w formach
przekazanych przez św. Siostrę Faustynę. Dziś tworzą go
różne zgromadzenia, stowarzyszenia, bractwa, wspólnoty
i osoby indywidualne podejmujące zadanie głoszenia
orędzia Miłosierdzia świadectwem życia (czynem),
słowem i modlitwą.
Każdy apostoł Bożego Miłosierdzia angażuje się w
świadczenie miłosierdzia bliźnim przez czyn, słowo i
modlitwę. Sposób pełnienia apostolatu uzależniony jest
od wielu czynników, m.in. powołania, środowiska rodzinnego i zawodowego, oraz osobistych możliwości.

ON POETRY, AND BALLADS IN PARTICULAR

So I’m taking a poetry class this semester. Regular readers of
this space know that I fancy myself a verse-maker, regaling
you occasionally with so much metered rhyme. In truth, I’ve
been writing poems for decades now. I’ve got a drawerful of
them, and a drawerful of rejection letters to complement the
effort. Bad form, perhaps, has been my undoing. But English
316--Forms of Poetry--is trying to bring a little structure to my
work. I always kind of sensed that poetry had rules. Guidelines, anyway. But beyond knowing that a sonnet has fourteen
lines, I was in the dark on the details. I’m still in the dark, but
thanks to Professor Bruce, the shadows are lifting.
A poet herself, she told us on our first night together of the
harsh-sounding accentual alliterative poetry written by the
early Anglo-Saxon poets. Four beats per line. Non-rhyming.
Alliteration twice in the first half of the line and at least once in
the second half. Think Beowulf, if you dare. And from there
she took us right into traditional and contemporary ballads.
One such classic, apparently, is the ballad of Sir Patrick Spens.
Here are the first and last stanzas (in your best Old Scottish,
please): “The king sits in Dunfermling toune/ Drinking the
blude-reid wine/ O whar will I get guid sailor/ To sail this
schip of mine?” and “Haf owre, haf owre to Aberdour/ It’s
fiftie fadom deip/ And thair lies guid Sir Patrick Spens/ Wi the
Scots lords at his feit.” What happens in-between is the king’s
choice of Sir Patrick, with the sailor saying yes, even though
he knows he is doomed and it will be his final voyage. It’s all
very sad, and that’s the point. Ballads tell stories of heartbreak
and death. I didn’t do well on the first quiz because I hadn’t yet
captured this idea, even though I should have, given the ballads
we had been assigned to read. But it wasn’t until I remembered
an old Steve Goodman song--The Ballad of Penny Evans--that
I finally got it. “Oh my name is Penny Evans and my age is
twenty-one/ A young widow in the war that's being fought in
Viet Nam/ And I have two infant daughters and I do the best I
can/ Now they say the war is over, but I think it's just begun…” Another sad story, but great ballad material.
Today’s first two readings, by comparison, seem to be
anything but great ballad material Per Isaiah, after all, “On this
mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast
of rich food and choice wines…” No bad news there. Per the
Apostle Paul, “My God will fully supply whatever you need...”
No bad news there, either. But things start going south in the
Gospel, what with the invited guests saying they’re too busy to
come to the wedding feast, and with the king proclaiming them
unworthy, then extending the invitation to all. And things go
way south when a guest arrives improperly dressed, setting up
the parable’s lesson, one that we should all keep forever in
front of us. Ballad-wise, I’d maybe put it this way: The king
said, ‘Bind him! Throw him out!/ a rude and harsh adieu’/ The
many are invited, yes/ The chosen, though, are few.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:00 PM in the Convent, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30 PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Sunday
each month at 1:45 PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30 PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Sunday of the month at 1:45 PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00 PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at
773/622-5900.
For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Please call Stan
