What is “Oshima Tsumugi”?
• “Oshima Tsumugi” is one of the well-known
Japanese silk kimono textile. Amami Oshima Island
is located approximately 40 kilometers south of
Kagoshima, Kyushu. Traditionally Amami Oshima
has been the transit point between China and
Japan and fabric-dyeing culture also came down
from China to Japan through this route.
• Originally hand-woven yarns were used “Oshima
Tsumugi” textile but technical innovation in the
Meiji Era enabled to use the machine-woven silk
yarns.
• Special technic called “Doro Oshima” is the dyeing
technic to dye the woven silk fabric with the
decocted dye made of the local Island Plum tree
shafts and stem barks full of pigment and tannin.
Silk fabrics are dipped in this liquid and knead
them with hands for about 40 times. After the
natural dry, the silk fabrics are soaked in the mad
clay with iron to produce great colors. By the effect
of tannin and iron conjunct, silk yarns keep
swallowed.
• “Doro Oshima” is produced by the indefatigable
techniques and variety of textiles are white, colors
and dyes. More patterns are matching and fine, it
is considered to be a high-grade quality.
