Omani college
takes universal
grinding machine
Chester Machine Tools says
it has installed a universal
cylindrical grinder at Nizwa
College of Technology (NCT) in
Oman. The company recently
sent two engineers to the college,
which is around 160 km northwest
of the capital, Muscat, to complete
the installation and training for
the customer. The NCT is one of
seven colleges in Oman operating
under the auspices of the Ministry
of Manpower (MoM).

MACH 2016 outsells 2014
MACH 2016 has hit a key milestone: the
space allocated for exhibitors at the show, to
be held at the NEC in Birmingham on 11-15
April, has now exceeded that allocated for the 2014
edition. Total commercial space has tipped over the
22,247 sq m mark achieved in 2014. The addition of
Asquith Butler helped achieve the milestone, taking
the exhibitor space allocated so far to 22,267 sq m.

£181m for
engine plant
Ford has approved an
investment of £181m at
its Bridgend engine plant
to produce a range of new
petrol engines. The amount
includes backing from the
Welsh Government to the tune
of £14.7m, with production
planned to start in late 2018. The
plant currently produces 3400
engines a day, equivalent to one
every 24 seconds. More than
19 million engines have been
produced at the plant since it
opened in 1980. The move will
safeguard more than 750 jobs.

Calls for
female quotas
Milestone at
DMG Mori
The new president of the Institution of
Engineering and Technology (IET) wants to
see more engineering employers consider
introducing a range of measures including quotas
to boost the number of female engineers. Naomi
Climer, who has become the IET’s first female
president in its 144-year history, has been an
engineer for almost three decades, during which
time the proportion of female engineers in the UK
has remained at less than one in 10, the lowest level
in Europe. In comparison, 50% of GPs are female.

DMG Mori’s Davis, California, machine tool
manufacturing plant has completed the
production of its 1000th machine. The facility,
located near Sacramento, was opened in 2012 and
is said to produce and assemble more than 100
machines per month. The 221,000 sq ft factory
was built adjacent to the design centre and digital
technology laboratory that Mori Seiki developed 15
years ago as an R&D site. A total of 180 employees
work at the site, with 120 of them involved in
production and the remainder working in R&D.

Yorkshire grit on the three peaks
Billed as the toughest and
biggest cyclo-cross event
in the UK, the annual Three
Peaks cyclo-cross race had its
53rd running on 28 September,
and the challenge proved too
much of a temptation for a team
from WNT Germany to resist.
Led by Claude Sun, WNT’s
worldwide managing director, the
six members of the WNT team
were determined to take on the
famous three peaks and return
with highly respectable times.
To ensure that Team WNT
was fully prepared for the event,

Edgecam proves pivotal
at Turnell & Odell
Edgecam software is playing
a pivotal role in assisting a
precision engineering company

niche market of supplying mould
tools to the UK’s rotational moulding
industry. Having invested in a further
two new Haas milling machines
and a new high specification
computer to handle the specific
requirements of producing rotational
mould tools, Wellingborough-based
Turnell & Odell says it simply could
not manufacture them without

long rotational mould tools for
construction industry pipes which
required millions of lines of code:
“We needed 1.2 million lines of
code just for one operation. It
would be absolutely impossible
without Edgecam.” Turnell &
Odell’s production director, Kevin
Rees, goes on to explain that
rotational moulding tools are highly
complex because a uniform wall
thickness has to be maintained:
“Anything in the internal features
which is going to create the actual
plastic product has to be mirrored
on the outside, to ensure the wall
stays at a constant thickness.”
Mr Rees says the file sizes are
considerably bigger than for normal
machining because of the tooling’s
complexities: “The demands put
on Edgecam for the piping moulds
were extremely heavy, but the
software dealt with it so easily that a

Siemens says it has
improved multi-task
machining functionality in the
latest version 4.7 of its Sinumerik
Operate user interface. Sinumerik
Operate and the Sinumerik 840D
sl CNC control combine several
machining technologies, such as
turning, milling and drilling, as well
as workpiece and tool measuring
– on one machine tool – to
ensure the complete machining of
complex workpieces.

4.7 comprises, among other
features, extended set-up and
manual modes (JOG), which
now interactively support the
user when setting up turnmill machines. There is also
a new measuring function for
approached turning tools, in which
the setting screen automatically
changes depending on the tool
type to be measured. In addition,
workpiece measurement has
been improved, now enabling
the user to easily check and
specify the workpiece zero on the

simplified the approach of turning
tools in tool set-up mode: when

CNC upgrade simplifies
railcar axle grinding
A comprehensive upgrade of
centreless grinders is helping
a railcar axle manufacturer
to simplify precision grinding
operations on axle forgings. A
key element of the project, which
has been managed by APeC
Integration Services Inc, is the
retrofit of customised CNCs based
on NUM’s Flexium platform.
The machine tools in this
particular project are high capacity
Landis centreless grinders, which
utilise a dressable grinding wheel
and a plunge grinding cycle to
create profiles on railcar axle
journals. This is the second time
that APeC has improved the
performance of these grinders with
control systems based on NUM
CNC kernels.
The original machines
were hydraulically actuated
and equipped with tracer type
wheel dressing systems. In the
mid-1990s, APeC performed a
full mechanical and electrical
upgrade on each machine that
included retrofitting a modern CNC
system and in-process gauging

programming software
for five-axis and high speed
machining at last week’s EMO
exhibition in Milan. The main
enhancement is the ability to mirror
complete machining projects in
one operation and to maintain
the machining characteristics, for
example to choose automatically
whether climb or conventional
milling should be used. Previously,
only individual toolpaths could be
mirrored.
Automatic mirroring saves
considerable time whenever right-
and left-hand versions are needed
of a part or tool. It will also be
faster to program the machining
of symmetrical objects since it will
be possible to program one half
and then mirror the toolpaths to
complete the program.
To ensure that the mirroring
has performed as expected, the
new option can be used with the
ability, introduced in PowerMill
2015 R2, to undertake complete
verification of a project for machine
tool issues such as collisions.
Comprehensive verification can be
performed, says Delcam, including
ensuring that the machine tool is
instruments. On that occasion, the
company based the upgrades on
NUM’s Power 1060 control.
After a further 20 years of
service in a busy production
environment, the machines became
due for another mechanical and
electrical upgrade. On the control
side, APeC collaborated with
NUM USA once more to develop
an intuitive HMI. This enables
operators to learn how to use the
machines very easily and quickly
– even if they are unfamiliar with
these types of grinders. Customer
benefits include improved worker
satisfaction, less need for training
and increased machine productivity.
Each machine upgrade
uses several NUM products,
including the CNC kernel, touchsensitive operator panel, servo
drives and motors. The Flexium
CNC system uses EtherCat
I/O communications, making it
simple for APeC to implement an
advanced plunge depth control
architecture.
