Does Pope’s ‘Who Am I to
Judge?’ Indicate a Change?
Guest commentary by Mark Segal
P
ope Francis may yet be the savior of the Roman Catholic
Church. Whatever he turns out to be, right now he’s a muchneeded breath of fresh air. Take that from someone who has
been an unabashed opponent of recent Popes.
Pope Francis from day one has proven to be
different — a man of this time, not 500 years
ago where the Church has been stuck. On his
flight back from Brazil, he met with the press
and made several startling announcements, so
startling that it may end the truly ugly and
hateful battle the church has waged against the
LGBT community.
First, he made it clear that gay people could
still be priests as long as they practice celibacy
like heterosexual priests. That’s fair enough,
gays must follow the rules like everyone else.
His predecessors, Pope Benedict XVI and John
Paul II, both tossed out gay priests and made it
clear the rules did not apply to them.
This is a sea change, regardless of whatever
spin conservatives in the church will put on it.
Something he said during that chat was not
quite appreciated at the time, but says a lot
about him as a person who respects diversity.
He made it a point while speaking in Italian,
that each time he had to refer to
homosexuality, he didn’t use that word. He
spoke that word in English and used the word
gay.
This was lost on most, but if you put it with
his other statement, “If someone is gay and he
searches for the Lord and has good will, who
am I to judge?”
The Vatican establishment had leaked a
story to an Italian magazine about a
homosexual lobby in the Vatican.
Responding to this, Pope Francis stated he
had investigated the reports and found them
groundless.
He added that while such a lobby would
be an issue, he did not have anything against
gays and that their sins should be forgiven,
according to media reports. He said that
homosexuals should be treated with dignity
and that no one should be blackmailed or
pressured because of sexual orientation.
However, what he said does not suggest
acceptance of anyone, priest or otherwise,
engaging in homosexual acts.

Briefly Put
Gay Olympic Figure Skater Urges No Olympic Boycott
In the wake of calls for boycotts of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia next February
due to the recent escalation of Russian anti-gay measures, openly gay two-time Olympic
figure skating competitor Johnny Weir urged in his weekly column that there be no boycott.
“The fact that Russia is arresting my people, and openly hating a minority and violating
human rights all over the place is heartbreaking and a travesty of international proportions,‘
said Weir, saying that he intends to compete, despite the risks involved with being openly
gay in Russia, if he qualifies. “There isn’t a police officer or a government that, should I
qualify, could keep me from competing at the Olympics.”
NJ Begins Fight to Override Governor’s Marriage Veto
New Jersey United for Marriage has begun a campaign to win the freedom to marry in
the state, where a bill passed in the Legislature in February 2012 but was vetoed by
Governor Chris Christie.
“This new, broad-based campaign brings the best of the movement to the important task
of ensuring that loving and committed New Jersey couples, who deserve to be treated just
like all other Americans, no longer have to cross the river to get married and have their
marriages respected.” To help, visit freedomtomarry.org.
Study Shows Transgenders Face Discrimination In Military
While transgender people serve in the military at a rate double the general population,
they nonetheless face discrimination during and after service, according to a new study
entitled, Still Serving in Silence: Transgender Service Members and Veterans in the National
Transgender Discrimination Survey.
While congressional legislation does not prohibit transgender people from military service,
the military’s medical code lays out regulations that can prevent transgender people from
joining the military or serving openly. In this study, some transgender service members
reported not serving openly for fear of discharge or verbal, physical and sexual abuse.

Lawsuit Challenges Virginia Same-Sex Marriage Ban
The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Virginia and Lambda Legal have filed a
federal class action lawsuit seeking the freedom to marry for all same-sex couples in
Virginia as well as an end to Virginia’s refusal to recognize marriages same-sex couples have
legally entered elsewhere.
“I’m an Air Force veteran, and if Virginia would just respect our marriage from D.C., it
would ensure that my spouse and family could access all the benefits I’ve earned,” said
Christy Berghoff, from Winchester, a plaintiff in the suit. “I’ve been with Victoria for almost a
decade now, and it hurts to have our home state say we are not married when it recognizes
marriages entered into by different-sex couples who may have only recently met.”
LGBT Sport Groups call for IOC to host Sochi Pride House
A broad group of international organizations and activists, including the largest
international LGBT sports organizations, have begun a concerted effort to respond to a
rising official and unofficial homophobia in Russia, and to call on the International Olympic
Committee and other sports governing bodies to accept responsibility for the choice of hosts
of the events they sanction.
Among their first demands is that the IOC host a Pride House in Sochi during the 2014
Winter Olympics. “We believe in action that is concrete and goals that are attainable,” said
Lou Englefield, director of Pride Sports UK. “Athletes should not bear the burden of Putin’s
homophobic regime and what is in effect the complicity of the IOC.”

An Evening with Greg Louganis Splashes
Awareness on HIV/AIDS
by Joyce Mitchell
F
our-time Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis is hailed
as one of the greatest divers of all time. He poetically sails
through the air after takeoff from a 30-foot platform, entering
the water with the smallest semblance of splash – an exclamation
point to an exceptional dive.
At age 53, Louganis still dives while also
coaching up-and-coming Olympic hopefuls.
Away from the diving board, he is a bestselling author and advocate for equality and
HIV/AIDS awareness, frequently going on
the road to help get the message out.
“We are so excited to have Greg join us
here in Sacramento to kick-off a major new
prevention effort targeted to local colleges,”
said Capital City AIDS Fund (CCAF) Board
Member Ted Ross. “Given that half of all
new infections are among young people, this
new collaboration with college campuses is
critical.” Louganis will be in Sacramento
September 5, to kickoff CCAF’s new HIV/
AIDS Education and Prevention Campaign.
Speaking recently with Louganis from the
2013 Swimming World Championship in
Barcelona, Spain, the Olympian said, “It is
imperative we keep a public eye on HIV/
AIDS, especially since transmission can most
often be prevented through diligence and
education.” Louganis emphasized, “It is also
important to keep our youth motivated to do
so.”
Louganis announced he was gay in 1994.
He later disclosed he was HIV+. Despite
winning four gold medals, Louganis was
plagued with criticism and judgment
because of his sexual orientation and HIV
status.
A great deal of progress has been made,
but Louganis acknowledges there’s still work
to be done. “I believe there is stigma within
all factions of our society, every aspect of
society that is marginalized, is stigmatized,”
Louganis said.
“By keeping HIV/AIDS in the public
spotlight and talking about it, we are
reducing stigma,” said Ross. “As many as 60
percent of young HIV+ guys don’t know
they are positive and can infect others. That
statistic is alarming and so education and
prevention is key.”
Proceeds from the Louganis event will
benefit CCAF’s Helen Veress Mitchell

school. “It is important we support our youth
in general, but those living with HIV/AIDS,
can help motivate through their own
experiences,” Louganis said.
That’s exactly what’s happening. CCAF

LGBT Wedding Expo to
Celebrate Marriage Equality
P
lanning a wedding can be very stressful. Sending out
invitations, finding the perfect dress or tuxedo, getting a
photographer, selecting wedding rings, picking a menu and
caterer, finding a venue — the list of things to do is seemingly
endless.
The possibilities for your wedding and honeymoon are endless, and if you want to get truly
exotic, consider a trip to the Nordic Light Hotel in Stockholm where you can get married in the
Ice Hotel (www.icebarstockholm.se). Find out what possibilities await you at the LGBT Wedding
Expo. Photo by Ada Elmgart.
Now that we get to share in the joy of planning our own weddings, we also get to share
in that stress. There are wedding experts out there that can help though, and many of them
will be at the Outword LGBT Wedding Expo to help with every last detail to make your
wedding perfect — and as stress free as possible.
The festive event will include a fashion show of wedding couture designed specifically for
LGBT brides and grooms presented by House of Fashion; a Battle of the DJs; free wine and
hors d’oeuvres tastings; free raffle prizes; and educational workshops on estate planning,
taxes, prenuptial agreements and other financial and legal issues affecting same-sex couples.
Attendance is free and open to the public and parking is free.
The Outword LGBT Wedding Expo will be held on Tuesday, August 13, from 5:30 to 8:30
p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel Woodlake, 500 Leisure Lane, in Sacramento, and is a joint
venture with Outword Media Marketing & Events, Inc. and Details Details Events &
Conference Planning.
“Whether you’re thinking of getting married or not, we hope everyone in the LGBT
community, and our straight allies, will come out and celebrate with us the freedom to do
so,” said Outword Media CEO Fred Palmer. “And who doesn’t like a good party?”
Kelli Hannaford of Details Details, co-producer of the annual Sacramento Pride Festival,
and a straight supporter of LGBT equality, said it has been heartbreaking to know
committed same-sex couples that wanted to marry but were prevented from doing so by the
passage of Proposition 8 in 2008. “Being part of the community as this struggle for equal
rights has gone on has been life-changing,” she said. “Now I can’t wait to go to a fabulous
gay wedding!”

Love of Theater Opens Way to Lifelong Career
M
arlene Freid knew she wanted a career in theater when
she was in 7th grade. That spark caught fire, and after
three decades of doing practically every job possible in
the theater field, she recently landed a position at the UC Davis
Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts — and the flame still
burns.
“I started out acting, and I very quickly
realized that what I really enjoyed doing was
stage-managing,” she says.
She got lots of stage management
opportunities in high school, then studied
theater at San Joaquin Delta College in
Stockton, where she concentrated on stage
management as well, gaining experience
ranging from two-person shows to
60-member casts.
Through the work-study program she used
to put herself through college she became a
seamstress and costume manager. That
experience earned her a grant for full tuition
as an assistant costumer for the University of
Pacific theater program for a year.
Following her career dream, Freid took a
stage manager job with a Philadelphia
theater, where she discovered she had an
aversion to humidity and was soon
California-bound again. She took a stage
manager position in L.A. and worked other
odd jobs to make ends meet.
Then in 1990 circumstances brought her
back to home territory: She was hired by
Sacramento’s Music Circus, just for the
outwordmagazine.com
summer. When the summer job
ended, with other offers pending,
she approached the management
of Music Circus’ parent company
about keeping her on. She was
hired into a full-time, year-round
position with California Musical
Theater, also home to Broadway
Sacramento and formerly the
Cosmopolitan Cabaret. She would
work for the same company for 23
years.
Late last year, following changes
in the company’s management
and the closure of Cabaret, where
she had served as associate
producer, Freid left to seek other
opportunities. “When I applied for
the position at Mondavi, it was the
first job interview I’d had in 23
years,” she says. Before she even
had time to refresh her interview
skills, she joined the UC Davis
Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts as
its Audience Services Manager.
In her new position with Mondavi, Freid
oversees everything an audience member
experiences, from the time he or she alights
from the car in the parking garage, through
the lovely walk into the theater, at the
concession stand, being seated by an usher
— in short, everything about the theater
experience that does not occur onstage.
With a team of 300 volunteers, she will be
responsible for the audience experience at
more than 200 events annually. “Instead of
working with one show that may run for

by Bonnie Osborn
months, it’s exciting to have the opportunity
to see great world artists, often for one-nightonly performances,” Freid says. “It’s a huge
learning curve, but it’s also exciting to be
part of the UC system. They treat their
employees like part of their family and let
you know they very much want you to be
with them for a long time.”
Freid’s advice to young people
interested in a theater career is to “try
everything.” “I did some acting, but I
realized there were thousands of actors
out there with my same look and
qualities. I knew I wasn’t going to
make a career out of being an actress,”
she says. “But by moving over to the
technical side I was able to both make
theater a career and make a living.”
Other than lighting design,
choreography and music director,
Freid says at one time or another she’s
done every theater job there is. “By
learning what every job does,” she
says, “you become a better stage
manager.”
Freid resides in Sacramento with her
wife, Sara Freid, their son Seth, and a
crazy menagerie of four-legged furry
kids.

reports many of the scholarship graduates go
on to work with others living with HIV/
AIDS. CCAF now has a PhD scholarship
recipient who is studying the most effective
interventions to prevent HIV transmissions
among young gay men.
“It is always important to keep the lines of
communication open with our youth on
many topics, and maybe especially about
drugs, sex and HIV/AIDS,” Louganis said.
“The important question is how do we keep
our youth motivated to keep themselves
safe.”
Louganis is passionate. He continued, “yes,
accidents happen but it is important we
build the esteem of our young people to love
themselves enough to protect themselves
and those they love.”
An Evening with Greg Louganis is
September 5, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the
Sacramento Hyatt Regency. General
admission tickets are $50. VIP tickets are
available for $85 and include a private
reception with Louganis, a complimentary
glass of champagne, and a copy of his book,
Breaking the Surface. The VIP reception
begins at 5 p.m. For more information and to
purchase tickets, go to

Blomkamp, the visionary director of 2009’s
District 9, one of the finest sci-fi films of
recent years.
The new movie is set in the year 2159
when two classes of people exist: the very
wealthy who live on a pristine man-made
space station called Elysium, and the rest,
who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.
Secretary Rhodes (Foster), a hard-line
government official, will stop at nothing to
enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve
the luxurious lifestyle of Elysium’s citizens.
That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from
trying to get in, by any means they can.
Damon plays Max, the hero of the movie,
who agrees to take on a daunting mission
that if successful will not only save his life,
but could bring equality to these polarized
worlds.
