Chennai, June 19:
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa soon
after taking office for a second term,
issued orders to reduce the business
hours of TASMAC outlets and directed
closure of 500 retail outlets across
the State. Within the next few days,
she has fulfilled her promises as the
government issued orders to close 500
TASMAC outlets from today.
Leaders of various political parties,
social activists and general public
have welcomed this move by the
Chief Minister.
According to a government release,
the managing director of TASMAC,
R Kirlosh Kumar, has issued instructions for closure of 500 retail vending
liquor shops with effect from today,
after the working hours were curtailed
by two hours already, from 24 May
following the announcement by the
Chief Minister.
As per a government order issued,
the list of 500 shops which are to
be closed was prepared by taking
into account the recommendations
of the District Collectors, senior
regional mangers of TASMAC and
relevant details submitted by the
district managers of TASMAC, into
consideration.
Among the five regions and 33 districts of the TASMAC administration,
a maximum of 201 outlets are to be
closed in the Madurai region. Chennai region, which includes Chennai,
Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts will have 58 shops closed, out
of which seven are located in Chennai
city. ‘We are happy that our Chief Minister has acted quickly in implementing
the important promise made by her,
and one shop in our area is also to be
closed’, says a resident of Velacheri.
The order has also insisted that the
stocks in the outlets which are to be
shut, have to be transferred to the
godowns. The properties other than
stock, like furnitures, cash chest box,
billing machines, coolers, and all
records relating to the shops including
other fixed assets have to be handed
over to the concerned district managers, which are to be verified by the

One f i s h e r m a n s u f fered an eye injury
when Sri Lankan naval personnel allegedly
pelted stones at his
boat off Katchathivu islet today, damaging it.
The fisherman was
part of a group of about
3,500 who had put out
to sea in 659 boats from
here yesterday morning,
Fishermen’s Association
President S Emiret told
reporters.
He said the Sri Lankan
naval personnel also damaged 50 fishing nets.
The injured fisherman has
been hospitalised.
Difficult to avoid disclosure
under new scheme: SIT chief
attention was drawn prominently
that if something is found (at a later
stage) they will be subsequently
prosecuted... to some extent it had a
deterrent effect. Now, this time it will
be difficult (for evaders), Shah said.
He said the issue of P-notes
(participatory notes) has also
been controlled to a large extent
and hence it will not be easy for
tax evaders to hide their assets
and funds from agencies like
the Income Tax department
and they will now have to
disclose it to them.
The SIT had last year suggested that market regulator
Sebi put in place regulations that will help identify
individuals holding P-Notes
or offshore derivative instruments (ODIs), and take other steps
required to curb black money and
tax evasion through the stock market route. P-Notes are used by a
large number of foreign investors
to park funds in the equity market
without disclosing their identity to
the Sebi.

SNOW WHITE
New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
The chief of SIT on black money
feels it will be difficult for those
holding untaxed assets to avoid
disclosure under the ongoing onetime compliance window opened
by the government after the limited sucess of a similar scheme
launched last year for those with
tainted money overseas.
SIT Chairman Justice (retd) M B
Shah said the Income Tax department has tightened each and every
angle under the current scheme,
and hence evading disclosure
under this scheme will be hundred
per cent difficult.
The last such scheme was not
successful... rather it was successful to some extent in the sense that
ne fisherman suffered an eye injury when Sri
Lankan naval personnel allegedly pelted stones at
his boat off Katchathivu islet today, damaging it.
The fisherman was part of a group of about 3,500 who
had put out to sea in 659 boats from here yesterday
morning, Fishermen’s Association President S Emiret
told reporters. He said the Sri Lankan naval personnel
also damaged 50 nets.
Four persons on a motorbike were killed when their
two-wheeler rammed a fish laden lorry at Kombuthi
Vilakku near Ervadi in Ramanathapuram, district,
police said. The deceased included two teenaged
boys, aged 14 and 13. In Harare, handed a rude
shock in the opening game, the Indian youngsters
will have to raise their game in the second Twenty20
International to stay afloat in the three-match series
against Zimbabwe tomorrow.
It was the first time that the young team was tested
on the tour and it faltered on key moments to suffer an
unexpected loss.
Meanwhile, 500 retail liquor shops in the State were
shut today in line with Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s
directives.
According to a government release, MD, Tamil Nadu
State Marketing Corporation Kirlosh Kumar, issued instructions for closure of 500 retail vending liquor shops
with effect from today.

Pulses import
under scanner
New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
The import of pulses has come
under the scanner of central intelligence agencies to check any black
marketing and cartelisation to jack
up the prices of the commodity.
The officials of Intelligence Bureau
(IB) and Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence (DRI) have alerted the
field formation to the possibility of
such illegal activities by traders
and hoarders, official sources said
today. About 5.5 million tonnes of
pulses were imported last fiscal,
largely through private traders.
The move comes as the prices of
pulses have continued to soar and
reached Rs 200 per kg in retail.
Various central agencies and the
Income Tax department have been
conducting raids across the country
for some time to check hoarding.
So far, 14,000 raids have been
conducted and over 1.33 lakh tonnes
of pulses seized in past few months,
the sources said. The rise in prices of
pulses is due to demand-supply gap.
As per an estimate, the demand is
of 230-240 lakh tonnes whereas the
supply is about 170 lakh tonnes.
With each passing year, there is
an increase in demand of pulses by
one million tonnes, thus making imports necessary. The possibility of
black marketing and illegal trading
cannot be wished away as hoarders
try to exploit the situation to make
profit, they said.
The intelligence agencies have
been asked to coordinate among
themselves and share actionable
inputs to check any wrongdoing, the
Up & downs
Chairman said investigating agencies are facing difficulties in reaching to the bottom of the matter as
they are not getting specific account numbers and people named
in the list are also not disclosing
the details to the taxman.
On the issue of bank loan frauds,
Shah said it was the domain of the
RBI which can act and comment
upon them.
Vice Chairman
of the SIT Justice (retd) Arijit
Pasayat also said they were hopeful that the one-time compliance
window provided to domestic black
money holders will be successful.
On ‘Panama Papers’, Pasayat
said the follow up action of probe
agencies is “bound” to produce
good results.

staff in 500 outlets will be redeployed
in their respective category like supervisors, salesmen and assistant
salesmen and are to be posted in the
same district according to the existing
vacancies. The surplus in manpower

Canals getting

K
eeping in mind the problems faced during
the deluge in November-December last year,
residents of the neighbourhood want the canals
to be de-silted and cleaned before the rainy season
begins.
Memories of the floods seem to be fading from the
minds of the people which is evident from the
way garbage is being dumped into canals
connecting prominent lakes in the neighbourhood.
The canal which connects Selaiyur lake
with Chitlapakkam lake and the one which
links Rajakilpakkam lake with Sembakkam
and Nanmangalam lakes are littered once again.
Vijayakumar, a resident of Selaiyur, said local residents had returned to their routine and had started to
throw waste into the canals. ‘With the neighbourhood

junction sees heavy traffic during
peak hours. The stretch, which passes
through residential areas, is considered as a short-cut, but it only amplifies the problem. It takes a minimum
of half an hour to cross it and reach
Madipakkam.
This road connects Tambaram and
Medavakkam to Madipakkam and
Guindy on one side and to Velachery
and Thoraipakkam on the other.
Vehicles parked by shoppers to the
adjacent Madipakkam Main Road,
only suffocate the place. These two
and four wheelers are unattended,
adding to the woes.
‘I travel to Guindy via this route daily
and it takes a lot of time to cross this
junction. The Meenambakkam way
has heavy traffic and hence I preferred
this. But it has become pathetic now,’
says Guna, a regular commuter.
‘This is much closer for us to travel,
but traffic is the only problem,’ says
Nithya, a four-wheeler user. ‘While

two-wheelers make their way through,
it is very difficult for four-wheelers like
us,’ she adds.
Regular commuters feel that the
road should be widened and shops
should be cleared, immediately.
With an increase in the number
of commuters in a route which was
once known only to few, the road
is unable to cope with the drastic
pressure.
‘There was a time when only local
residents used the route, but now
everyone knows about this and
have started using it. This has created problems for all,’ says Mala, a
resident of Nanmangalam.
Shopkeepers refute the charges
against them for the traffic and point
out that the narrow structure of the
road is the real culprit.

team from the Ministry had inspected
the facilities, infrastructure and other
aspects in the institute for renewal of
licence to continue performance of
the kidney transplantation.
It said the license had now been
renewed and necessary communication in this regard was received by
JIPMER on 15 June after the expert
panel submitted the report to the
Ministry.
The renewed license is valid for the
next five years. JIPMER did the first
kidney transplantation in March 2012

donor. In the next stage it harvested
kidneys from brain dead patients after
a certification by a panel of experts.
The first cadaver kidney transplantation was performed in 2013,
the release said, adding that 84
transplantations had so far been performed this included transplantation
of kidneys from cadaveric donors, the
release said.

Obama bats for gun law
US President Barack
Obama has warned that
horrific mass shooting
incidents like the recent one in Orlando will
continue to occur unless tougher gun control
laws are adopted.
‘We can’t anticipate or catch every single deranged
person that may wish to do harm to his neighbours,
or his friends, or his coworkers, or strangers. But we
can do something about the amount of damage that
they do,’ Obama told reporters.
‘Unfortunately, our politics have conspired to make
it as easy as possible for a terrorist or just a disturbed
individual like those in Aurora and Newtown to buy
extraordinarily powerful weapons - and they can do so
legally,’ Obama said.
Obama along with Vice President Joe Biden met
victims and families of the weekend’s mass shooting
in which a self-radicalised Afghan-origin youth pledging
allegiance to the ISIS killed 49 people in a gay club in
Orlando, Florida. Another 53 were injured during the
shooting that took place in the wee hours of Sunday.
‘This debate needs to change. It’s outgrown the old
political stalemates. The notion that the answer to this
tragedy would be to make sure that more people in a
nightclub are similarly armed to the killer defies common sense. Those who defend the easy accessibility
of assault weapons should meet these families and
explain why that makes sense,’ Obama said. ‘And
if we don’t act, we will keep seeing more massacres
like this - because we’ll be choosing to allow them to
happen. We will have said, we don’t care enough to
do something about it,’ Obama added.
Republican presidential presumptive nominee Donald Trump has said that the casualties could have been
far less if people were allowed to carry guns.
Obama has been seeking tougher gun control laws
that make its difficult for people to purchase such
weapons of mass casualties.

‘Dead’ jawan returns
home after 7 years
This story of a ‘dead’ Indian Army jawan can become a perfect storyline for a Bollywood film. It is an
unbelievable story of Armyman Dharamveer Singh,
who met with an accident along with two colleagues
in 2009. Though the two Army jawans returned back
to their base camp after the accident, Dharamveer
just disappeared.
As per the norm, the Army declared him dead after
three years. The family was immediately given the
pension and issued a death certificate.
However, to everyone’s surprise, Dharamveer, an
Army jawan who was posted with 66 Armoured Regiment, returned home last week.
As per details available, after Dharamveer met with
an accident, he lost his memory and wandered on the
streets of Haridwar.
PM opens renovated

India strongly believes that its economic growth must bring benefits to
its neighbours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as a stadium in Jaffna
renovated by India was jointly inaugurated by him along with Sri Lankan
President Maithripala Sirisena.
While thanking India for its assistance, Sirisena said Lanka was
committed to strengthening bilateral relations even
though there may be wrong understandings and
interpretations at times.
Modi, along with Sirisena, inaugurated the Duraiappah Stadium, named in honour of a former Mayor
of Jaffna late Alfred Thambirajah Duraiappah. The
stadium, in disuse since 1997, has been renovated
by the Indian government at a cost of over Rs.7 crore.
Describing it as a ‘landmark day’, Modi assured Sri
Lanka that India will ‘walk side by side’ with the country as it charts its own path to progress and prosperity

Two-thirds of children with chronic kidney disease were found to be

Vitamin D deficiency often elicits

Vitamin D deficiency is common

Athletes sad as IAAF
upholds ban on Russia
The IAAF upheld its ban on Russia’s track
and field team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Friday in a landmark decision that
punishes the world power for systematic
doping.
The Russian Sports Ministry said it was
notified of the decision by track and field’s
world governing body, which ruled that the country had not done enough
to earn reinstatement.
The suspension was imposed in November following a report by a World
Anti-Doping Agency commission that alleged state-sponsored cheating,
corruption and cover-ups in Russian track and field.
The Russian Ministry said it was ‘extremely disappointed’ by the decision to ban the entire team from the Rio Games. It appealed to the IOC to
‘consider the impact that our athletes’ exclusion will have on the dreams
and the people of Russia.’
The International Olympic Committee has scheduled a summit of sports
leaders next Tuesday to address ‘the difficult decision between collective
responsibility and individual justice.’
That meeting could potentially open the door for individual athletes who
have never been accused of doping and are deemed to be clean to compete at the games.
Scientists have designed the
world’s first microchip containing
1,000 independent programmable
processors, that can upto compute
1.78 trillion instructions per second.
The energy-efficient ‘KiloCore’
chip contains 621 million transistors, researchers said.‘To the best
of our knowledge, it is the world’s
first 1,000-processor chip and it is
the highest clockrate processor ever
designed in a university,’ said Bevan
Baas, professor at the University
of California, Davis, who led the
team that designed the chip architecture.
While other multiple-processor
chips have been created, none
exceed about 300 processors, researchers said. Most were created for research purposes and few
are sold commercially.
Each processor core can run
its own small programme independently of the others, which
is a fundamentally more flexible
approach than the Single-Instruction-Multiple-Data approaches
utilised by processors such as
graphics processing unit (GPU).
The idea is to break an application up into many small pieces,
each of which can run in parallel
on different processors, enabling
high throughput with lower energy
use, Baas said.
Since each processor is independently clocked, it can shut itself
down to further save energy when
not needed, said Brent Bohnenstiehl, graduate student at UC
Davis, who developed the principal
architecture.
Cores operate at an average
maximum clock frequency of 1.78
GigaHertz, and
they transfer data
directly to each other rather than using a
pooled memory area
that can become a
bottleneck for data.
The chip is the most energyefficient ‘many-core’ processor
ever reported, Baas said.
For example, the 1,000 processors can execute 115 billion
instructions per second while dissipating only 0.7 Watts, low enough
to be powered by a single AA battery. The KiloCore chip executes
instructions more than 100 times
more efficiently than a modern laptop processor.
Applications
already developed for the chip
include wireless coding/decoding,
video processing, encryption, and
others involving large amounts of
parallel data such as scientific data
applications and data centre record
processing.
The team has completed a compiler and automatic programme
mapping tools for use in programming the chip.
The idea is to break an application

New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
Top industry leaders said RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s decision not

Essar Oil looks to double up
Plans to increase number of petrol pumps to 4,300 in 18 months
New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
Essar Oil, India’s second largest private oil refiner, plans to nearly double
its petrol pumps to 4,300 in next 18
months, a senior company executive
said. ‘We have 2,225 petrol pumps
now which we will increase to 4,300
in next 18 months,’ Essar Oil’s CEO
Retail Madhur Taneja said.
The retail network expansion
planned is on franchise model and
will entail an investment of about Rs
2,500 crore by the pump owners.
‘We were the first private company
to enter fuel retailing business when
we in 2003 opened our first petrol
station,’ he said.
The network was expanded to 1,400
outlets before the expansion was
frozen in 2008-09 in view of private
retailers being unable to compete
with heavily subsidised public sector
oil firms. After diesel price was de-
regulated or freed from government
control in October 2014, the expansion was restarted and network has
reached 2,225 now, he said.
‘We saw sales volume increase from
700,000 kilolitres in 2014-15 to 1.67
million kl in 2015-16 and we hope to
continue to grow at over 100 per cent
this year as well against an industry
growth of 7-7.5 per cent,’ he said.
Essar Oil has a pan-India network
now except for Jammu and Kashmir
and the North East, he said.
Its first petrol pump came up in
Maharashtra about 13 years ago in
2003. Essar Oil was the first private
company to enter petro product
retailing in India at a time when the
government was experimenting with
the idea of deregulated oil pricing by
freeing up the price of ATF.
After a brief spell of deregulated
product pricing, the diesel market
was again regulated in 2004. The
move posed challenges for private
oil companies like Essar.
Through the course of this regulation regime, Essar Oil, in a bid to keep
its retail ambitions alive, provided
financial support to its franchisees
through various schemes, thus helping them in tiding over the difficult
times, he said.
This earned the company the dealers’ trust. In October 2014 when
diesel prices were completely deregulated and private retailers were given
a level playing field with their PSU
counterparts, the company already
had a network of about 1,400 retail
outlets.

New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
The Prime Minister’s Office has
convened a meeting on 21 June to
deliberate upon a roadmap for further
easing FDI norms to attract more
foreign investment.
‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi is
likely to chair the meeting in which
officials from Ministries, includ-
ing Commerce and Industry, Finance
and Home Affairs, would participate,’
sources said.
The meeting assumes significance
as the government is considering
relaxing FDI norms in more sectors,
including existing pharmaceutical
companies.
The Department
of Economic Affairs has proposed that FDI
up to 49 per
cent should be
allowed in existing
pharmaceutical companies through the automatic
route and anything beyond through
approval of the Foreign Investment
Promotion Board (FIPB).
FDI in the sector is a contentious
issue as concerns have been raised
over mergers and acquisitions of
Indian pharma companies by foreign
giants.

Mother Dairy eyes
revenue jump
New Delhi, June 19 (PTI):
In order to tap the fast growing ecommerce business in the country,
Mother Dairy has tied up with about
10 e-tailers to sell dairy products, fruits
and vegetables, aiming to boost its
revenue and farmers income.
Mother Dairy, which supplies about
30 lakh litres of milk in the national
capital region, had posted a turnover
of Rs 7,186 crore during last fiscal, out
of which about 75 per cent was from
dairy segment.
‘We are tying up with e-commerce companies like Big Basket
to increase our reach to the customers. We also want to improve
farmers’ income through increased
procurement of milk and fresh
fruits and vegetables,’ Mother
Dairy Managing Director S Nagarajan told PTI.
The company has tied up with
nine e-tailers - Big Basket, Grofers,
AskMe Grocery, Sangam Direct, SRS
Grocery, Just Buy Live, Innerchef,
Grocermax and Orange E-Tokri - for
sale of dairy products, ice-cream and
frozen/fresh fruits and vegetables in
different cities.
‘Mother Dairy is witnessing a
growth of 10 per cent in sales
month-on-month through e-commerce space,’ he said.
Asked whether the company would
launch its own e-commerce platform,
Nagarajan said: ‘We do not want to
enter into that space directly.’
On expected turnover this fiscal,
Nagarajan said it should be close to
Rs 8,000 crore.
As part of the expansion plan, Mother
Dairy is setting up a processing plant in
Ranchi at a cost of Rs 75 crore.
and Promotion (DIPP) has also proposed complete ban of FDI in tobacco
sector. The proposal was supported
by the Finance and Health Ministry
but Niti Aayog has raised certain
issues.
According to sources, the other
sectors which may see some kind of
policy tweaking include single brand
retail and food processing.
Last year, the government relaxed FDI norms in about dozen
sectors at one go including defence, retail and construction
development.
Steps have also been taken
to improve business climate of
the country by promoting ease
of doing business.
FDI in the country has touched
an all time high of $40 billion in
2015-16. Foreign investment
is considered crucial for India,
which needs around $1 trillion
for overhauling its infrastructure
sector such as ports, airports
and highways to boost growth.

Hungary on top of Group ‘F’ after draw with Iceland
Paris, June 19 (AFP):
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a secondhalf penalty as Portugal stumbled to
a second straight draw at Euro 2016
on Saturday after a frustrating 0-0
stalemate against Group F rivals
Austria in Paris.
Ronaldo set a new Portuguese
record with his 128th international
cap, surpassing the mark previously
shared with Luis Figo, but the occasion will be better remembered for the
Real Madrid superstar hitting the post
with a 79th-minute spot-kick.
Hungary, who salvaged a point in
a 1-1 draw with Iceland, are the surprise group leaders with a game to
play, while Austria must win their final
match to avoid exiting prematurely.
‘This is not the result we wanted.
It’s not fair, it’s not deserved but
that’s football,’ said Portugal coach
Fernando Santos.
‘It’s no use crying over spilt milk, it’s
not the time to have regrets.
‘We have another point and we
have a ‘final’ to play on the 22nd
(against Hungary), we have to focus
on winning the next match.’
Santos sought to reinvigorate his
team after a disappointing 1-1 draw
with Iceland, drafting in Ricardo
Quaresma to form an attacking trident with Ronaldo and Nani.
William Carvalho was handed a
start in central midfield, while Austria coach Marcel Koller made three
changes, two enforced, with Sebastian Prodl, Stefan Ilsanker and Marcel
Sabitzer all coming into the side
beaten 2-0 by Hungary on Tuesday.
Austria showed early signs of promise, much like in their opener against
Hungary, carving out a chance when
a leaping Martin Harnik nodded
Sabitzer’s whipped cross just wide.
But Portugal settled quickly, with
Nani denied his second goal of the
tournament by the outstretched leg
of Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer
after breaking in behind centre-back
Prodl.
Almer tipped a long-range strike
from Vieirinha behind, while Ronaldo

CR7 under fire
Paris, June 19 (AFP):
There was relief for Austria and joy
for those who like to see superstars
cut down to size after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty and a chance
to go into the European Championship record books on Saturday.
Portugal won a spot kick in the
79th minute of their Group F match
against Austria. Goalkeeper Robert
parried away a stinging drive from Ilsanker within seconds of the restart,
although Portugal soon reasserted
their authority with Ronaldo leading the charge.
His thunderous left-footed strike
from the edge of the area was
turned behind by Almer, and the
ensuing corner produced a similar
result with the Austria keeper beating
away Ronaldo’s downward header.
Koller hauled off Alaba on 65 minutes, replacing the Bayern Munich
star with Schalke midfielder Alessandro Schopf, but it failed to stem
the flow of Portuguese attacks.
And with 11 minutes to go it appeared
Portugal would get the goal their display
merited when they were awarded a
penalty after Martin Hinteregger wrestled Ronaldo to the ground. But the
three-time World Player of the Year
was left shaking his head in disbelief
as he smacked the ball against the
base of the post to ensure his wait for
a goal at a record fourth European
Championship finals goes on.
Almer dived the wrong way but
Ronaldo crashed his shot against
the post. The 31-year-old holder
of multiple scoring records looked
to the heavens in disbelief. He just
needs one goal in the tournament to
become the first player to score at
four European Championship finals.
Minutes later Ronaldo got the ball in
the net but was offside.
Hodgson mulls striker
options for Slovakia
Saint-Etienne, June 19 (AFP):
England take on Slovakia tomorrow in the key battle for first
place in Group B at Euro 2016 with Roy Hodgson mulling over
which of his strikers to deploy.Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge
proved their form by coming off the bench to dig England out of
trouble in their 2-1 win over Wales in Lens. England manager Hodgson has an
embarrassment of riches up front, but Harry Kane, who started in the 1-1 draw
against Russia and win over Wales, has struggled to make an impact in France.

Pakistan’s long serving Test captain
Misbah-ul-Haq has put off decision
on his cricketing future even as the
national squad departed yesterday for
a challenging series in England.
‘Right now I am just focusing on the
four Tests in England because if we
want to show everyone our top three
ranking in Test cricket is not based
around our wins in the UAE we need to
put up a good show against England,’
Misbah said in an interview before the
team’s departure.Speculations were
rife that Misbah would make some
sort of announcement about his future
on Friday. Misbah, 42, was compelled
by the PCB last year not too retire
from Test cricket and lead the team
to England and a reliable source said
the Test captain had in fact discussed
his future plans with the PCB officials.
‘He has informed the PCB he will
decide on whether he will continue
to play Test cricket after the series in
England,’ the source said.
Dhoni gives a piece

‘You don’t have to make mistakes to learn’
Foxborough, June 19 (AFP):
Lionel Messi scored a recordequalling 54th international goal
as Argentina outclassed Venezuela
4-1 to book their place in the semifinals of the Copa America Centenario here Saturday.
The Barcelona superstar scored
his fourth goal of the tournament in
the 60th minute at the Gillette Stadium to equal Gabriel Batistuta’s
long-time Argentina international
goalscoring record.
Messi also created a goal for
Gonzalo Higuain, who scored
twice, and second half substitute
Erik Lamela as Argentina set up a
semi-final against the United States
in Houston on Tuesday.
Messi is determined to lead Argentina to their first trophy in 23
years after a series of agonizing
near-misses which include defeats
in the fi nals of last year’s Copa
America and the 2014 World Cup
final.
Few would bet against him achieving his goal after an inspirational
display that left Venezuela chasing
shadows in the early part of Saturday’s quarter-final.
Messi’s genius created the opening goal after eight minutes, with
the playmaker lofting a sublime
curling pass to pick out Higuain’s
run into the area.Napoli forward
Higuain still had plenty to do but
skillfully directed a first time strike
past Venezuela goalkeeper Dani
Hernandez for a wonderful goal.Argentina remained firmly in control but
were jolted in the 27th minute when
Nicolas Gaitan picked up a needless
yellow card for a kick on Alexander
Gonzalez that will see him suspended
for the semi-final.Argentina’s dominance clearly had Venezuela rattled,
and the Vinotinto’s defensive unease
led to the next goal. A slack backpass from Arquimedes Figuera went
straight to Higuain in space, and the
striker coolly rounded Hernandez to
stroke home his second of the night to
make it 2-0 after 29 minutes.
Vargas scores four
In Santa Clara, Eduardo Vargas
scored four goals as holders Chile
sent Mexico spinning to a historic 7-0
defeat to reach the semi-finals.Hoffenheim forward Vargas completed
a hat-trick in 13 devastating minutes
either side of half-time to send Chile
into a semi-final against Colombia in
Chicago on Wednesday.
The drubbing was Mexico’s worst
ever defeat in the finals of a major
tournament. Their previous biggest
loss was a 6-0 rout by West Germany
at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
The rout was also only one goal
away from equalling Mexico’s heaviest ever defeat in any international,
an 8-0 thrashing by England in London in 1961.

M S Dhoni
Harare, June 19 (PTI):
India captain Mahendra
S i n g h
Dhoni hopes
the youngsters in
the squad learn from
their mistakes after a shock
loss to Zimbabwe in the opening T20
International here.
The young Indian batsmen thew their
wickets away at crucial junctures as the
visitors ended up losing the game by two
runs here yesterday.
Dhoni hopes the fresh faces don’t make
the same mistakes in the second game
here tomorrow.
‘I feel, though we lost the game - it is
disappointing - it is still a learning curve for
the youngsters, provided they are learning
out of it,’ said Dhoni. ‘You have to take it in
a serious manner because whenever you
will represent the country, whenever they
get a chance to be part of the proper Indian
team for a consistent period of time, they
will feel the pressure. That will be the time
when a game like this or a tour like this will
really help them ease out that pressure,’
he further said.
The captain himself failed to get his team
over the line as India could not get eight
runs off the final over with pacer Neville
Madziva holding his nerve. He said he
should have completed the job but expected a more sensible approach from
his batsmen.
‘I felt the last ball was brilliant but that is
what my job is, so maybe I am the person
to finish the job. But at the same time, we
kept losing wickets and what happens at
that stage is that you are losing wickets and
you are giving one dot ball and at the same
time, the set batsman is not getting strike.
‘I felt the batsmen will have to take the
responsibility. The reason being, few of
them, they were set, they were batting well.
When you are chasing targets, you need
to take it to the end and then look to play
the shots. That was something that was
lacking in this game,’ Dhoni pointed out.
The second string squad for the tour was
picked in the absence of seniors and Dhoni
said the rookie players must make most of
the opportunity. The skipper said he batted at six to give others more time in the
middle. ‘It is not for me. If I had to bat up,
I could easily bat at four for this team. But
what is important is for these youngsters
to bat at that number because this is an
opportunity for them. The only reason I
am here is to
understand them and at the same time
guide them as to what has
to be done.’ He also said international
cricket is different to IPL and there is little
room for error.
‘Let’s talk about IPL, it doesn’t really matter. You can play your big shots. There is
no pressure of result. You say ‘okay, in 14
games if you play five or six innings, you
will take the team through.

‘The Central sector scheme of Free

24 dead, 26 missing
in Indonesian floods
Jakarta, June 19:
Flash flooding and landslides in
Indonesia have killed 24 and left
more than two dozen missing,
an official said today, with mud
avalanches burying people inside
their homes.
Torrential rain since Saturday has
triggered serious flooding across
Central Java, with thousands of
homes inundated, said disaster
agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo
Nugroho.
‘Initial data... Shows the impact of
the floods and landslides in Central
Java has caused 24 deaths, with
26 others still missing,’ Sutopo said
in a statement.
Footage aired by local broadcasters showed villagers sitting on their
roofs to escape the rising water,
their cars and homes submerged
in brown water.
Areas prone to landslides in the
densely-populated province were
the worst hit, with drivers swept
off roads and dozens of homes
destroyed by fast-moving walls of
mud, rock and water.
In one district, five people were
buried in their homes as a landslide swept through the village. In
another, nine people were killed
as they tried to clear rubble from
a road.
‘Suddenly a huge landslide struck
the cars and people on the street.
Nine bodies were retrieved,’ Sutopo said in a statement.
Search and rescue crews are
combing villages for the 26 still
missing, Sutopo added. Temporary shelters have been erected
to help those evacuated from the
disaster zone.
Landslides are not uncommon in
Indonesia, a vast tropical archipelago prone to natural disasters
and torrential downpours.
Last month, fifteen students holidaying at a popular tourist spot
in western Indonesia were killed
when a landslide swept through
their camp ground.

a fresh tender with increased stake
and incorporating new conditions
to revive the ambitious train set
project.
In a setback to the Railways’ plans,
none of the five shortlisted bidders
for the Rs 2,500 crore project submitted financial bids last month.
‘We are re-examining the issue
and a decision will be taken shortly
to issue a fresh tender incorporating some changes balancing bidders’ requirement with railways’
interest,’ said a senior official
involved in the project.
Railways had floated a global
tender for procurement -cummaintenance and manufacture of
15 train sets with 315 coaches in
June last year.
Five bidders had qualified for the
initial round in November, including
consortia of CAF and Bombardier;
Hitachi with Ansaldo and Kawasaki; Toshiba with state-run Bharat
Heavy Electricals; Alstom with government -owned Bharat Earth Movers; and Siemens. Their deadline
for bids had been extended twice
in December and February.
‘None of the five bidders submitted their financial quotations by 3
May, the last day of the submission
of the bids. The companies have
asked for increasing the quantum
of work under the tender,’ a senior
Railway Ministry official said. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had
in his budget speech proposed to

‘Hurt’ India eyes fightback
Harare, June 19 (PTI):
Handed a rude shock in the opening game, the Indian youngsters
will have to raise their game in the
second Twenty20 International to
stay afloat in the three-match series
against minnows Zimbabwe, here
tomorrow.
It was the first time that the young
team was tested on the tour and it
faltered on key moments to suffer
an unexpected loss.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni
failed to get his team over the line
in the last over but equally culpable
were the batsmen who got out at
key moments after getting starts.
Manish Pandey made a fluent 48
but like debutant Mandeep Singh,
he would have loved to carry on and
take the side through.
With Dhoni at the other end and
India needing eight off the final over,
Axar Patel got out to a loose shot to
make life tougher the visitors.
The second string squad was
picked to test the team’s bench
strength and the youngsters had
the ideal platform to perform in the
back of a resounding series win in
the preceding three ODIs. However,
they wilted under pressure when
challenged for the first time in the
series.
While the batsmen did not show
composure required at the highest
level, the bowlers, who were given
opportunity for the first time on the
tour, disappointed. Credit should
go to Zimbabwe for their performance after
a humiliating loss in ODIs but they
were allowed by the erring Indian
bowlers to post 170.
All-rounder Rishi Dhawan, representing India for the first time since
the Australia tour and making his
T20 International debut, put up an
ordinary effort leaking 42 runs in
four overs.
Pressure was also on pacer Jaydev
Unadkat, who was in India colours
for the fi rst time in almost three
years. Making his debut in the
Zimbabwe's fightback ensured a memorable win in the first T20
and India will be eyeing revenge in tomorrow's second game.
Kulkarni come back to bowl with the

be seen whether he gets another
Leggie Yuzvendra Chahal, who impressed in ODIs, also had an off day
game after ending with figures of 0
and he would be aiming to bounce
for 43 or Barinder Sran and Dhawal
back strongly. Ahead of the mustwin game, Dhoni warned his men
to not repeat the same mistakes in
the remaining games.
Though spinner Jayant Yadav was
the only one to not get an opportunity in the 16-man squad, Dhoni
is expected to get back to his full
strength bowling attack.
India did not see the loss coming
after a cakewalk in the ODIs, giving
Zimbabwe a much needed morale
boost to press for another win.
Their captain Graeme
Cremer insisted that
more was expected from
his team, that pulled
itself out of a hole with
an all-round effort.
It looked they were staring another
batting collapse midway into the
innings before Elton Chigumbura
came up with a whirlwind 56 off 24
balls to set up a competitive total.
Zimbabwe batting was an abject
failure in ODIs but in the shortest
format, they showed they had the
resources to put up a fight. The top
order got some form going and so
did the likes of Malcolm Waller in
the middle order.
The bowlers also chipped in with
timely blows with the stand-out
effort coming form 24-year-old
pacer Neville Madziva, who stopped
Dhoni and co from getting eight runs
in the final over.
His last over was praised by Dhoni
himself, albeit raising more
questions on the famous
finishing skills of the Indian
captain.
Taurai Muzarabani and
Chamu Chibhabha also
bowled tidy spells to keep
the Indians under check. The win
was surely a surprise, generating
some excitement in the otherwise
drab contest. Another fighting contest will be welcome but beating a
wounded India could prove to be a
too big a task for the home team.
