Five Secrets for Turning Failure
into Success
What if, starting today, the word “no” didn’t stop you?
What if, every time you heard the word no, you became
stronger, more powerful, and more resilient?
What if, the greatest success strategy in the world wasn’t go
for yes, but to go for no?
Well, it is.
The word “no” doesn’t have to debilitate you. In fact, empower
you to achieve a whole new level of greatness never dreamed
possible. You might think this is just a strategy. It is a sales
strategy, but it’s also a life philosophy.
Whether we define ourselves as salespeople or not, we all
must overcome failure and rejection to be successful and
achieve what we want.
Here are five secrets to help you turn failure in success immediately!
1. Change your mental model of “Success” and “Failure”.
2. Intentionally increase your failure rate.
3. Set “No” goals.
4. Celebrate your failures, not just your successes.
5. See courage as a “Muscle”.
So, change your mental models, intentionally increase your
failure rate, set “no” goals, celebrate your failures and see
courage as a muscle, and you’ll significantly increase your
success rate in six months guaranteed. It is not just for businesses. It’s for every aspect of your personal and professional
lives.

A New Perspective
From the Desk of Rick Hansen
We at Main Street often tout the Four-Point Main Street Approach to
downtown revitalization; that being organization, promotion, design,
and economic restructuring. Michael Burayidi, a professor and the chair
of the Department of Urban Planning at Ball State University in Muncie,
Indiana, contends that there is another four-point approach.
Dr. Burayidi’s research shows that communities with resilient downtowns incorporated these four strategies in their downtown revitalization efforts…
Attracting recent immigrants: Recent immigrants are a
major segment of the first-time homebuyer market, much
of which is located in or near downtown neighborhoods.
Small city downtowns in particular stand to benefit from
this trend.
Attracting Baby Boomers: From now until 2030 an average of 10,000
Baby Boomers per day will reach retirement age. Most will retire in
their current location and those who move will not likely flock to seniors-only retirement communities, according to current research. They
will likely choose walkable communities with lots of
amenities, which are often found in historic downtowns.
Linking historic preservation with heritage tourism:
Heritage tourism is travel geared
to experiencing authentic places
and activities that tell the stories of the people,
culture and history. Heritage and cultural tourism
are intricately linked to historic preservation.
Downtowns are places where buildings have meaning and where there
is a sense of place; where a community’s story is told.
Keeping downtown the center of civic and cultural life:
Dr. Burayidi’s fourth prong in downtown revitalization is
retaining and expanding the location of civic and cultural
buildings in the downtown. The first thought that came to
mind when I read this was our post office, which is a perfect example of the type of building that many communities have fought to retain. It is these communities that
have and will remain healthy.

David Haas is now on the Board of Directors! David is a
native Ukiahian with roots of seven generations in this
area. David is no stranger to work, from working retail
management at Yokayo Supermarket to fabricating the
tables in front of The Bottle Shop Deli to being a firefighter for Ukiah Valley Fire District. He served as a firefighter until December 2009, over 20 years, and now
works with his wife at Expressions Candy and Ice Cream
Shop located on School Street. He is excited to join the
wonderful group at Ukiah Main Street Program to help
gain more involvement with
citizens, merchants and
Ukiahians as a
whole! We are
glad to have
David involved,
sharing his goals
and objectives
for the future
of Downtown.
Downtown Write-Up
“Hey You Guys!” I am officially back and getting ready for the event season!!
How amazing it is to be in beautiful Ukiah and see some friendly faces. For
those of you who don’t know me, I worked with Main Street for a little over
two years from 2007-2009. I moved to Chico for a year and a half for college
and just recently decided to transfer to Sonoma State to be closer to family,
friends and Ukiah. I learned some good tools while I was in Chico working at
the Downtown Chico Business Association and am looking forward to putting
them to good use here. They really have a great Holiday program so I am hoping that we can bring some of that enthusiasm here and benefit as much as
they do. Some of you have already seen my face around downtown but for
those who haven’t, you will be seeing me soon! :)
I have been busy working on Taste of Downtown (TOD) and Girl’s Night Out
(GNO) since my return and have high hopes for what all Main Street can do
for its Downtown Merchants. I am always open to ideas and helpful hints to
working better for you so email me anytime at [email protected]. I am also
always looking for volunteers for TOD and Concerts in the Park so give me an
email or call the office if you would like to ease the search! See you Downtown!
