The Lake Shawnee News
President’s Message
February 2013
Mother Nature is not quite sure what she wants to do this winter. We keep getting
teased with warm and cold weather this year. Unfortunately, this type of weather
pattern poses a dangerous situation concerning our lake and ice safety. We
recently saw a tragedy unfold on Budd Lake in which two high school boys fell
through the ice and unfortunately help could not come quick enough to save their
lives. Like all other safety rules, parents need to educate their children on good ice
safety practices.
Each year we publish ice safety rules to follow and the rule is always that there is
no such thing as safe ice. Children should not venture out on the ice alone or
without adult supervision. We have posted on our website information on general
rules and guidelines for ice safety and ice thickness recommendation. The club
does not measure ice thickness or recommend if the ice is safe to use. Venturing
out onto the frozen lake is the responsibility of each individual and you do so at
your own risk.
On the subject of ice, just a few reminders about our fishing rules, which are
posted on our website, while ice fishing on our lake. Badges should be worn,
especially members’ guests. Keep in mind that NJ Fish & Game requires a fishing
license for anyone over 16, even on private lakes. Please be courteous to our
residents and please no gas powered ice augers before 8am. All of our rules are
posted on our website.
Last, our annual meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 10th at 2pm. As always,
we need a quorum of approx. 50 members to conduct business. The annual
meeting is an opportunity for our Board of Governors and its committees to report
to the membership all the activities of the club for the past year. Please consider
taking some time to take an interest in your club not only to get up to speed but to
hear about all the great things that are going on with our club. Information on the
annual meeting packets should be arriving in the mail shortly. As we did in
previous years, we will be posting this information on the club website to save
some costs and trees.

Procedures for Ice Safety
1 Never go out on an ice cover alone, and never go out on
the ice if there is any question of its safety.
2.While you are planning any access to the ice, obtain the
record of air temperature for the past several days and
continue observing air temperatures while the ice will be
used to support loads.
3 Always let someone know of your plans and when you
will return.
4 When you arrive at the water's/ice's edge, visually survey the ice. Look for open water areas, and look for signs
of recent changes in water levels: ice sloping down from
the bank because the water dropped, or wet areas on the
ice because the water rose and flooded areas of the ice
that couldn't float because it was frozen to the bottom or
the banks. (If the ice is snow-covered, look for wet areas
in the snow.)
5 Listen for loud cracks or booms coming from the ice.
6 Look for an easy point of access to the ice, free of
cracks or piled, broken ice
7 If several people will be out on the ice together have two
people go out first and vigorously probe ahead with an ice
chisel. If the chisel ever goes through, carefully turn
around and retrace your steps back to shore, and do not
access the ice (try again some other day).
8 Near shore, listen for hollow sounds while probing. Ice
sloping down from the bank may have air space underneath. This is not safe; ice must be floating on the water to
support loads.
9 After getting on the ice, others in the group should follow
in the leader's steps but stay at least 10 feet apart.
“How well do you know your partner?”
