Likrat shabbat
We would like to thank Barbara Agdern, Cynthia Miller, Cynthia
Roth Garfield, and Rabbi Michael Weinberg who made donations
for the Likrat Shabbat on May 6 in honor of their May birthdays.
This is the time of year when we have many
opportunities to come together as a community
and many opportunities to broaden and deepen
our relationships with each other, with our
community and people, and with our God.
In addition to our regular Shabbat worship
each week and our usual full program of
activities, May also brings us our Yom HaShoah
observance on Wednesday May 4th at 7:30 pm; our Yom HaZikaron
Observance on Wednesday May 11th at 5:30 pm; the only Chicago
performance of Israel Story (the Israeli version of NPR’s This American
Life) on Thursday May 19th at 7:30 pm; Confirmation on Friday May
20th at 7:30 pm; and our incredible Spring Gala on Saturday May 21st
at 6:00 pm.
And then, on Wednesday evening June 1st at 7:00 pm we will come
together for our congregation’s annual meeting. At that meeting we will
not only conduct the business of the congregation – celebrating our
proud heritage and our dynamic destiny – we will also experience the
orderly transition of lay leadership. We will have the opportunity to thank
those whose terms of office are coming to a close and to welcome
those whose terms are beginning. We are greatly blessed here at
Temple Beth Israel in that we have many competent and confident
volunteer leaders who are ready and willing to step up and assume the
honor of leadership within our congregation. And because we think of
congregational leadership as a sacred endeavor, at Kabbalat Shabbat
services on Friday June 3rd we will consecrate our new officers and
Temple board members as they embark on their terms of sacred
service to our congregation.
On that evening we will also consecrate the newly elected leadership
of Sisterhood and Brotherhood even as we gratefully acknowledge
those who are completing their terms of service. As with our Temple
officers and board members so with those of our affiliates – all of us
express our gratitude for service lovingly and skillfully given and our
confidence in those who are taking up the mantle.
I encourage all TBI members to be present both at the June 1st
annual meeting and the June 3rd Kabbalat Shabbat as your fellow
members take on the task of strengthening our sacred community –
building on the foundations laid by their predecessors. As leaders,
they help us live fuller, richer, deeper, and more meaningful lives by
connecting us to our congregational community and beyond. And
they work to ensure that our community is a sacred community, a
community of meaning and holy purpose: a community that taps into
a common heritage, that is dedicated to a common purpose, and
that shares a common destiny. Our leaders fulfill that sacred task by
responding to our members and supporting the rest of the leadership influencing their work to ensure that it is for the common good and that
it supports our shared vision of a sacred community. I challenge our
new leadership to foster an atmosphere of consensus building about
the purpose and personality of our community; to create a climate of
programmatic experimentation with a commitment to honest evaluation
that allows us to acknowledge and learn from our failures as well as
our successes; to integrate all aspects of our community so that they
function in harmony with each other and so that they are coordinated,
linked, mutually supportive, and at times intermixed; to put our mission
into action – in a cycle of planning, implementing, reflecting and
modifying action so that the day to day experiences of our members
move ever closer to our shared vision of a sacred community.
We would also like to thank Harvey Choldin and Steve Franklin
who made donations in honor of their April birthdays.

While I was listening to a radio discussion about the
future of healthcare, I heard, “In the future, doctors
will be seeing patients via Skype.” I found this idea
disturbing. We are all familiar with websites like
,
WebMD, which enables the physician in all of us. The
medical establishment supports this. The WebMD
magazine is often found in doctors’ waiting rooms.
There are many websites where one can pose a
specific personal medical question to a physician. Nevertheless, the
advice is given with the caveat to “see your doctor.” You can research
symptoms, diseases, and treatments, and receive somewhat reliable
results via Google.com. However, there is no substitute for seeing your
doctor. The information from your computer can be useful, but it will
never take the place of a face-to-face meeting with a professional.
Technology is often confused with progress. In this day of social
media, texting, Facebook chatting, Instagram, and others we tend to
ignore and minimize the benefits of meeting face-to-face. And even
when we venture out, too many of us retreat to the isolation of our
Smart Phones rather than conversing with one another. Conversations
have become a rarity.
We forget the simple pleasures of meeting friends for coffee or a
meal, just to talk and see each other. A few months ago, I sensed that
a good friend needed this kind of support so we met for coffee. Our
meeting was important and satisfying for both of us. Skype serves a
purpose; it can bridge a distance gap that would otherwise prove
insurmountable. However nothing replaces being together.
Ironically, the business world has not completely forsaken face-toface meetings. While video and phone conferencing is becoming more
common, business people still devote much of their time to meeting in
person. They realize that being in the same physical space is effective.
It has become easy to avoid being part of a community. We can
substitute on-line experiences for the real world; we can text or
email rather than pick up a phone. We are all busy and don’t make
the time needed to assemble. On the other hand, modern cars, public
transportation, bicycles, and a network of roads make the process of
assembling much easier than in ancient times.
I maintain the same is true with the way we practice our religion.
Scholars have long recognized the benefits of communal prayer. The
festivals in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem and the concept of minyan
both have this notion at its core. There are televised or streamed
services for many religions. This is wonderful for those who cannot
make it out of their home. However, I can’t imagine that this can include
the same sense of community as attending a service in person.
Each week our Temple sends an E-blast to remind us of the current
activities and programs at Temple. Temple Beth Israel offers many
opportunities for getting together to share our common interests. In
addition to weekly Shabbat Services, we have adult education programs
featuring guest scholars as well as members of our Congregation. Our
Kabbalat Shabbat musical services are preceded by Likrat Shabbat
which gives us time to catch up with each other. We come together to
eat, laugh, and share our stories.
The upcoming Spring Gala, on May 21, is the result of over 70
members taking the time and making the effort to make this a worldclass event, in an environment conducive to meeting and interacting
with other guests. The Temple will be transformed into An Evening in
Paradise, that will be conducive to meeting and interacting with others;
an evening that we will all enjoy.
Pick up the phone. Have coffee with a friend. Spend some time
during each day speaking with someone face-to-face
I hope to see you at the Gala and to speak with you often in the
coming months.

is like being part of a large family. When
a family simcha occurs, such as a special
anniversary, birthday, baby naming,
aufruf or Bar/Bat Mitzvah, your friends at
TBI would love to celebrate with you and
help make your celebration a success.
Plan to mark your special occasion by
hosting a Friday night Oneg, and let the
Catering committee make sure every
detail is perfect. You can also help
celebrate other simchas by volunteering
your time to work with the catering
committee.

Shabbat (welcoming Shabbat) at 6:15 p.m.
This short service filled with Shabbat songs
and music is preceded at 5:30 p.m. by
Likrat Shabbat when we approach Shabbat
by greeting friends and enjoying a “nosh”
together.

This year, 5776, is a leap year which means there was a second
month of Adar. Two very special Sisterhood events took place, one
during each Adar. On the 25th of Adar (March 5) our Temple Beth Israel
congregation came together for the T’fillot Nashim service led by
Sisterhood members. The service was enhanced with beautiful music
from Koleynu, directed by Marla Aviva Bentley. We were also joined
by several members of the Women of Reform Judaism’s Midwest
District board. Joan Hakimi gave the D’var Torah, interpreting Parashat
Vayakhel from a woman’s perspective. The service was followed by a
lovely Kiddush luncheon, organized by Laura Cooper and Sharrel
Titlebaum. We would like to express our thanks to Rabbi Weinberg and
to Marla for their guidance in helping us prepare for this service. The
following women participated in the service and/or prepared the
Kiddush luncheon: Carol Barrington, Andi Blain, Dale Cone, Laura
Cooper, Ruth Dauber, Lorri Fishman, Lillian Gerstner, Keryn Groner,
Joan Hakimi, Roz Heimann, Alyce Heman, Nina Henry, Linda Janush,
Ilene Klegon, Pam Lavine, Helene Levine, Sharon Levine, April Levy,
Patti Levy, Joanne Merritt, Ione Novak, Gale Nudelman, Jane Page,
Sheila Rosenfeld, Cynthia Roth-Garfield, Jolie Rubin, Paula Sabin,
Aviva Sadkin, Marcia Satyr, Barbara Seaver, Ellen Sontag, Sharrel
Titlebaum, Linn Ullenbrauck, Karen Weine, and Jody Weinberg.
On the 24th of Adar Bet (April 3), the Women’s Seder took place in
Mendelsohn Hall. Thirty-eight Sisterhood members and friends took
part in the Seder, organized and led by Paula Sabin and Elaine Kropveld
Berger. Marla Bentley led the music, which included a joyous group
dance with tambourines to Miriam’s Song by Debbie Friedman. Ruth
Dauber, Jeanette Franklin, Aviva Sadkin, Judith Simon, Sharrel
Titlebaum, and Jody Weinberg gave reminiscences of bygone
Passovers from their experiences. The group was treated to a rendition
of the Four Questions sung in Yiddish by Sharon Levine and Marcia
Satyr. The Seder meal featured a Charoset tasting of Popular
Ashkenazi, Sephardic Truffle, Tropical Mexican, and Yemenite Spicy
options; several tasty Passover kugels; gefilte fish; and a bounty of
wonderful desserts. A big thank you to all who helped with the Seder
service and the delicious Seder meal: Ellen Baygood, Ilene Bernstein,
Elaine Bers, Ruth Dauber, Judy Dorfman, Rozanne Epstein, Jeanette
Franklin, Keryn Groner, Roz Heimann, Alyce Heman, Nina Henry, Linda
Janush, Pam Lavine, Sharon Levine, April Levy, Patti Levy, Joanne
Merritt, Sheila Rosenfeld, Cynthia Roth-Garfield, Aviva Sadkin, Marcia
Satyr, Sue Schneider, Judith Simon, Sharrel Titlebaum, Linn
Ullenbrauck, Jody Weinberg, Devy Weitzman, and Lisa Wynn. Special
thanks go to Paula Sabin and Elaine Berger for their hard work in
anchoring this warm and wonderful event, and to Marla Aviva Bentley
for her superb musical leadership.

I believe that people generally receive more than they
give; in my years in our congregation this has most
certainly been my experience. I have rarely witnessed a
greater culture of volunteerism than the one that exists at
TBI. I am well aware that I could not do my job without the
dozens and dozens of volunteers who continually step up
to support our congregational programs.
We are a community which requires the generosity of
volunteers who serve as the backbone of so much of what we do. We
depend on volunteers to be greeters and ushers at the High Holy Day
family services and to maintain both the TBI and school libraries. Volunteers
stepped in during Anne’s convalescence, and volunteers set up the Purim
carnival. Volunteers make Shalom Shabbat, Shabbat B’yachad, and
Mischpacha Minyan happen. Volunteers step into the void wherever and
whenever needed and make it possible for me to execute our wonderful
programming.
I want to offer words of thanks to Amber Wood, our congregation’s
Vice President of Education, who has gone above and beyond in helping to
guide our congregation’s educational vision; to Dawn Strauss, who has so
generously guided the YES Committee and brought me moments of great
humor and great poignancy along the way; to Richard Rotberg and Wendy
Fox who continue to serve ably as our adult education visionaries, providing
insight and stability to our program. Soup’er Study, the newest addition to
our adult learning catalog, would not have happened without the calming
presence of Jolie Rubin and the team of volunteers she gathered for soup
making and soup serving. Havdalah and Movie meals also were new to
our catalog this year and Beth Sair graciously provided delicious Saturday
night meals for all those who attended. Our Enrichment classes on Sunday
mornings are completely driven by amazing volunteers. I want to thank
David Rubin and Lisa Gelfond for the generosity of their time and their neverending kindness.

In addition, we will be singing Am Yisrael Chai by Rabbi Noam Katz,
based on the music and culture of the Jews of Uganda, as well as a new
Shalom Rav by Noah Aronson and his father, Cantor Theodore Aronson.
Koleynu has worked very hard this season to bring our congregation
music that inspires us and lifts our prayers. I am grateful to this dedicated group of individuals. I would like to thank the Koleynu Steering
Committee for all their efforts: Gary zimmerman, Abby Sloan, and Sharon
Levine. Jennifer McCabe, our accompanist and assistant director,
deserves Kol HaKavod. We are very thankful for her energy, flexibility,
patience, and talent.
Next year we will be taking the school through the reaccreditation
process and we will be looking to many of you to help us create the most
dynamic and creative portfolio for that process. We will be visited by the
accreditation team sometime in the spring and again, will need volunteers to
help prepare for their visit and welcome them to our community. I have no
doubt that we will have a plethora of committed helpers to support our
reaccreditation.
If you have found yourself sitting in the congregation singing and
harmonizing during services, Koleynu wants you! No experience is
necessary. You only need a desire to make music with friends. Contact
me for more information and to learn how Koleynu can elevate your
prayer experience.
Thank you to all of those who have stepped in and stepped up this year.
I am forever grateful.

By Linda Perlin
The Temple will be transformed into An Evening in
Paradise, that will be conducive to meeting and interacting with others;
an evening that we will all enjoy.
Pick up the phone. Have coffee with a friend. Spend some time
during each day speaking with someone face-to-face
I hope to see you at the Gala and to speak with you often in the
coming months.
