The Power of Possibilities
2nd Annual Mountain Maker Fest
“Science Fair on Steroids” Slated for August 13th
Are you involved in a creative hobby and would like to learn more about how
to turn it into a small business endeavor? Do you fondly remember cutting and
gluing construction paper, building with LEGOs, or coloring in books as a kid?
Maybe you still make time to explore electronics or pursue painting but it’s not as
often as you like. Maybe you feel like your kids get to have all of the fun?
Visit the upcoming Mountain Maker Fest
event to be held at the Garrett College Career
Technology Training Center in Accident,
Maryland on August 13 from 10:00am-3:00pm
to learn more about all of this and much, much
more!
Mountain Maker Fest is a festival event to
bring together people of all ages and interests
to experience, participate and learn about ways
others make goods as hobbyists, inventors,
entrepreneurs or would-be entrepreneurs. There
will be artists, artisans, and makers of all types:
food, soap, bread, robots, textiles, electronics,
etc. The goal is to have artists and other vendors
demonstrate, talk about and even get attendee
participation in their art, craft or endeavor.
As part of the Power of Possibilities series of

This event will feature ideas that may never have
been thought to be combined before and create
“ah-hah” moments for the attendees.
Stations planned by Garrett College, and our partners, GEARS, Inc and FIRST
Team 1629 are an interactive floor piano, life-like sim-lab manikin, supersized
working Nintendo controller, a high-five photo booth, and pole climbing robots.
You will actually get to make and take home flashing name badges and your very
own brush bugs (small racing robots made from a cell phone motor, a custom 3D
printed piece, a small battery and the head of a toothbrush). Also, there will be

a gluten-free baking demonstration, crafts by the
GC Civic Club, baking bread and a community art
project facilitated by Regina Holliday, nationally
renowned health care advocate and artist.
Overall, the Maker Movement is about sharing
ideas and learning from makers and do-it-yourselfers
in science, arts, technology, consumer products,
wood, agriculture, metal, leather, robotics, food,
textiles and other mediums! A focus on sharing
ideas and learning through S.T.E.A.M. (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).
Last year Mountain Maker Fest had over 400
attendees at this “science fair on steroids”.

businesses and “do it yourselfers” (DIY) who
are creators and innovators. DIY can stand for
everything from baking a cake, to performing a dance, to creating handmade
products like jewelry, arts or crafts, and even robots and 3D printers.
Quite simply, the goal of this event is to help transform the regional culture
to one of “possibilities” and opportunistic thinking while also helping individuals
realize their potential, enhance their
lives and form or grow a business. Kids
(and adults) will come away from the
event learning a bit more about design,
creation and innovation.
Sarah Myers, co-director of the
Mountain Maker Fest, who is an
entrepreneur and a maker herself along
with her duties at Garrett College,
commented that “there are many
people involved in innovation and
creative endeavors in the region and
we hope to bring them all together to
share, interact and explore. The maker
movement is especially relevant for

Skip Around Town
...by Skip “Father of the Bride” Carr
I know that Gene tells everyone
that I type while standing up, but I
don’t...so, I’m sitting here just about
one month after The Big Event and,
having had time to ponder it all, HERE
GOES:
On a picture-perfect afternoon on
the ocean front at the New Jersey
shore Caitlin and Scott Foley were
“joined in matrimony”. Looking more
pulchritudinous than any Disney Princess we ever took her to see, Caitlin
showed all the smiles and exuberance
that everyone would want for their
child. Wonderful weather, delicious
food served by a professional staff,
great camaraderie and lots of fulminating music (Gene and I thought that it
was mostly the same song played over
and over again).
My lovely daughter and I danced
to “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong....when I did the double-back
flip as Louis said, “I see babies cry, I
watch them grow”...well, never mind.
The Bride...photo by Brandon Darley

Our favorite connubial couple:
Caitlin and Scott Foley
A fairly large contingent from Garrett County made the trek to witness
this grand event. Scott had a huge
family turnout, Linda enjoyed a large
family turnout...as for me, I’m glad I
know Carlos Ramos (and family) and
Gene Hamm.
During the short speech program,
Linda and I were deeply moved by
words from both Ashley (Branthoover) Santillo and Nicole (Espada)
Darley. My discourse was hailed as
the best effort by a father-of-the-brideat-that-location-at-that-time-on-thatday...quite an honor.
CAITLIN: Where is Scott?
COUSIN ANTHONY: He’s down
on the beach checking out the girls.
It truly was a memorable event
made even better by the tireless efforts of Scott’s parents, Angela and
Bill Foley.
Caitlin and Scott will honeymoon
on the Mediterranean from late July
to early August....Gene told me that
he honeymooned on the Penobscot
River with his first wife and they...well,
never mind.

on the morning of her wedding(I keep telling
you that I used to be taller than Linda)
We want to thank all of you who
have asked about Caitlin’s wedding
and congratulated us and wished us
the best...your kind words mean more
than you could ever know. Many of
you have watched Caitlin from the
time she was eighteen months old
through school, college, cheerleading,
beginning a life in New York City and,
now, getting married. Thank you.
I saw my friend Amy (Hall) Lowdermilk at Mountain Top Bakery of
Deep Creek Shop n’ Save Fresh last
month...looking as young as ever.
I had the pleasure of writing a short
piece about Oakland Legend “Fast
Bobby” Eslin in this issue...a remarkable “young man” who celebrates his
75th birthday on August 8th.

Carlos Ramos told me at the wedding that Gene has been auditioning
for a role in a romance movie. I did
notice at one point during the reception that Gene seemed uplifted after
receiving quite a jolt in his career...
then again, it could have been a knee
jerk reaction. Ladies have always been
attracted to Gene since...never mind.

Who’s New?
Fun Unlimited Arcade & Pizza
Fun Unlimited is now open and going strong. Centrally located just north
of Deep Creek Lake, Fun Unlimited offers a total of 94 arcade games in a
building that has been extensively renovated and updated. With its new system
of affordable pricing, this arcade is fast becoming one of the premier family fun
destinations in Garrett County and the Deep Creek Lake area.
The owner, who has local interest and rental properties says, “There are
generally three recognized
genres of arcade games and
we offer all three”. Vintage
games (mostly 60’s to 70’s)
are found in a separate area
that is for those sixteen and
older. Here you will find
ball bowlers and baseball
games, shooting galleries
and thirty of those games
you may remember from
that time period, offering
fond memories as well as
fun.
Classic (1980’s) and
Modern (year 2000+)
games are available in a large
separate area with lots of elbow
room. Three of the newest games
available are here, including
“Fast & Furious”. Driving games,
pinball machines and many others
are here and are all set for free
play.
The difference between Fun
Fun Unlimited offers 94 arcade games
from Vintage 1950’s to Today’s Classics Unlimited and most arcades is that
here you pay only for the time you
use, after a minimum time, and
you can continue over and over again until you are done. Your unit cost actually
goes down as you play longer since the rate is reduced with time.
For even further savings, you will find some special pricing this summer:
every child that pays to play gets to have one parent play FREE. Two children,

You Should Know....
Local Legend “Fast Bobby” Eslin
Celebrating 75 Years of Helping Others
It takes a long time and a tremendous amount of effort to make a legend. Some
become legends by slaying dragons, some by hitting baseballs and some have
even become legends by robbing trains. Some men, like “Fast Bobby” Eslin, have
become legendary by simply doing their job, being available when called upon
and treating everyone with kindness and a smile.
Bobby was born in Bangor, Maine on August 8, 1941. After making his way
from Bangor to Ohio to New York State, he came to Garrett County to visit his sister
in 1979. Bobby has lived here ever since embracing our community, especially
Oakland, as his own.
In 1984 Bobby started
working for local merchants
with “Fast Bobby’s Delivery
Service”. He mowed grass,
shovelled snow, raked
leaves and made light
deliveries. Thirty-two years
later you can still see Bobby
on the streets of downtown
Oakland as he performs his
daily chores.
A valued and revered
member of the community,
Bobby has been cited as an
honorary member by the
Garrett County Sheriff’s
Department . Several local
merchants have referred
to him as “an outstanding
citizen of Oakland”.
We’ll all be celebrating with Bobby this month as he passes the milestone of
his 75th birthday. Bobby wants to thank the Maryland State Police, BB&T Bank,
Mark Grimm and Norman Guthrie for all they have done on his behalf over the
years. “I want to thank Denise of Community Action for all she has done for me”,
says Bobby, “and Garrettland Realty for giving me a place to live”.
So, if you are in Oakland and need something raked, mowed, delivered or
shovelled, call Fast Bobby’s Delivery Service at 240-321-5755...and if you see
Bobby this month, be sure to yell out as he passes by, “Happy 75th Birthday,
Bobby”.

Gloria Dean — Warming Up in Style
Submitted by the Garrett County Arts Council
If one were to travel to Rowelsburg, WV, they may come across The Curiosity
Shoppe owned and operated by artist Gloria Dean and husband Darrell. Gloria
has a second business venture called Scarves by BABKA, featuring personally
designed, hand-knitted and crocheted fashion scarves. The name Babka is Polish for
Grandmother and comes from the endearing title her four grandchildren call her.
Until Gloria married her husband and began a family in the late 1960s,
she worked as a nurse’s
aide at the former Saint
Vincent Pallotti Hospital
in Morgantown, WV. After
having two children, Darrell
III and Amy Elizabeth,
Gloria became a full-time
homemaker. It was during
this time that her mother-inlaw taught her how to knit.
She also taught herself how
to crochet.
In 1984, when her
children were in their
teenage years, Gloria and
Gloria Dean surrounded by some of her beautiful her family moved to her
and eclectic scarves.
current home in Etam, WV.
A year later they opened
The Curiosity Shoppe. Four weeks after opening, tragedy struck when their store
was flooded by three feet of water. Gloria went right to work and got her store
reopened. Since then, the store has remained open, selling one- of-a-kind items,
including Gloria’s scarves.
Her fiber art can also be found at various fairs, festivals, and businesses
throughout the region. Some of those businesses include Garrett County Arts
Council’s The Gallery Shop, Appalachian Gallery in Morgantown, WV, Tamarack
in Beckley, WV, and The Szilagyi Center for the Arts in Rowlesburg, WV. The
many craft shows she takes part in include Mountaineer Craft Week, Heritage
Craft Fest, Buckwheat Festival, Festival of Trees, and the Christmas Market at the
Szilagyi Center.
Gloria describes her work as wearable art fashions. When asked if she does
any other kind of artwork, she answered “I do cross-stitch, crewel embroidery, and
Swedish weaving, and fisherman crocheted afghans.” She describes fisherman
crocheted afghans as a crocheted piece with the texture formed on the right side,

leaving the wrong side with the appearance of a solid single crochet. Her other
interests include landscaping with rocks, plants and various ornamentations.
Gloria also enjoys volunteer work. In the early 1970s, she was a member of
the Junior Women’s Club while still living in Glenville, WV. The club was looking
for a volunteer to help with fundraising and Gloria enthusiastically took on the
position. She rode her bicycle around town, her son in the child seat on the back, as
she went about to raise funds. In 1971, she was selected to appear in Outstanding
Young Women in America in recognition of her volunteer work. Her passion for
volunteering still lives on today.
At the turn of the century, Gloria
became a member and helped
form a volunteer group called
Greater Downtown Rowlesburg
(GDR), a downtown beautification
committee.
She played her part in the
organization by using her artistic
eye in landscape design paired
with hard work and leadership, to
help make Rowlesburg beautiful
once more. She worked to install
plantings and raise funds for many
gardens around the town. Working
alongside her friend Joann Sisler
and various volunteers, a total of
200 trees were planted throughout Rowlesburg. Since then, many other people
have joined in on the rejuvenation of the town to bring it back to its original beauty.
She also lends her time to many other organizations and projects in the area.
She has received many other awards while living in Rowlesburg. In 2011, she
was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” by the Rowelsburg Revitalization Committee.
In 2012, she received the Board of Directors Award from the Preston County
Chamber of Commerce. In 2013, she was given the honor of being Mrs. Chestnut
during the 6th Annual West Virginia Chestnut Festival.
Gloria Dean, a business woman with a passion for the arts, nature, and volunteer
work has been an artist and member of Garrett County Arts Council for many years.
She began selling her knitted artwork at the Oakland Train Station on a year-round
basis. When that shop closed, an employee encouraged her to make her work
available for her established Oakland customers by displaying it at The Gallery Shop
Several of Gloria’s original hand-knit designs are currently on display at the
Pop-Up Gallery Shop located at 25227 Garrett Highway in McHenry, MD. A
project of Garrett County Arts Council, hours of operation are Monday-Saturday,
10am-6pm and Sunday, 11am-4pm. Funding is provided by Garrett County
Government, Maryland State Arts Council, and through membership support. For

Automotive Machine Funds Equipment
at WVU Cancer Institute at GRMC
If you’ve ever had difficulty while giving blood or getting an IV started, technology
now being used at the WVU Cancer Institute at Garrett Regional Medical Center will
be a welcome relief.
Garrett Regional Medical Center recently announced today that they have implemented the AccuVein AV400 vein
visualization system in their facility
thanks to a generous donation from
Automotive Machine, located in
Mountain Lake Park and owned by
Sue and Scott Bittinger. The AccuVein device has been shown to improve first stick success and reduce
patient pain.
The system is designed to help
healthcare professionals locate the
best vein for venipuncture. Simply
point the lightweight, portable device
at the skin and click to display the peripheral veins beneath. Venipuncture
is the most common invasive medical procedure worldwide with an esPictured with the new AccuVein

is a major goal for healthcare providers around the world.
“This is going to be good for the nursing staff but even better for our patients,”
said Kendra Thayer, vice president of patient care services at Garrett Regional Medical
Center. “Improving patient care and outcomes is always our main concern and the
AccuVein device will make a difference in allowing us to provide the best standard of
care possible.”
Vein visualization has been introduced throughout the world in over 120 countries and is being used in over 4,000 hospitals including in emergency departments,
neonatal units, surgery and intensive care units.
“The WVU Cancer Institute at Garrett Regional Medical Center has been truly
blessed with an outpouring of generosity and support from the entire community.
We can’t thank Sue Bittinger and her family enough for funding this specific piece of
equipment, the AccuVein visualization system,” said Mark Boucot, GRMC president &
CEO. “Using the latest technology to ensure patient care and comfort is a top priority
at the WVU Cancer Institute and the Garrett Regional Medical Center.”

Maryland Heritage Area Grants to Boost Cultural
Heritage Tourism in Garrett County:
Projects Receive Funds from Maryland Historical Trust Heritage Program
Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA), a state heritage organization, awarded
52 matching grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to Maryland nonprofit organizations, local
jurisdictions and tourism groups. The grants fund historic preservation, natural resource
protection and educational programs in 13 state-designated Heritage Areas. By supporting capital projects and educational activities, the grants spawn renewed interest in Maryland culture from residents and visitors, boosting tourism-related jobs.
The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area submitted seven grant
applications and five of those project received funds. Jen Durben, Heritage Area & Groups
Director said, “We had such a variety of great applications from throughout our heritage
area this year and we are so pleased to have five projects awarded in another round of
tough competition. Garrett County received a total award of $229,598. These grants will
allow the recipients to create new resources and expand awareness of heritage here in
Garrett County.”
The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce is the official Management Entity for the
Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area and also serves as the Destination Marketing Organization for the county. The Garrett County Heritage Area & Groups
Director administers the Heritage Area Program and works with stakeholders by offering
technical and grant assistance for heritage related initiatives that preserve valuable heritage resources and enhance tourism in the County.
In the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, projects funded were:
·
Town of Friendsville ($14,279) - Friendsville Interactive Historical Walking Tour & Historical Tour Website
·
Garrett County Government ($80,000) - Meadow Mountain Trail - Heritage Phase
·
Department of Natural Resources – Forest Service ($20,079) - Visitation and Economics
of Recreation/Tourism in Western Maryland State Forests
·
Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area ($100,000) – Management
Grant for management services of the certified heritage area with a goal to promote heritage
tourism.
·
Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area ($15,240) – Marketing Grant for
brand awareness marketing campaigns and milestone celebration events.
The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area is a program of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce which supports heritage tourism in Garrett County
through technical assistance and grant opportunities with a focus on heritage related initiatives that preserve valuable heritage resources and enhance tourism in the County. As
a state certified heritage area, effort is made to create public and private partnerships to
preserve historical, cultural and natural resources focusing on under-utilized resources
fostering a greater sense of community pride.
