Car Show
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT – AUGUST 21st
Plan to join us for this evening car show and the DACC tradition ‘DINNER BEFORE
THE SHOW’ at Joe’s Pasta and Pizza. We will meet at Joe’s for dinner at 5:30,
enjoy some great pasta/pizza then head over to the Birdville ISD parking lot in N
Richland Hills for the car show from 7PM-11PM. We will have special parking for
our group of ’55-‘57 Chevys at this open show that should have up to 300 cars of all
makes and models in attendance.
Joe’s Pasta is located at 3809 Colleyville Blvd (Hwy 26), (also known as
Grapevine Hwy). Just around the corner is the Birdville ISD Stadium Parking Lot at
Hwy 26 and Precinct Line Rd in N Richland Hills where the show will be held. If you
are not able to join us for dinner but plan to make the show let Bill Preston know at
405 412-0502 and he will save you a place at the show!

’56 Convertible

When I was in High school (1983-1985) my buddy’s
father had an AMC Gremlin and a Pontiac GTO.
Most times we would be cruising around in the
Gremlin; it was a “beater” but had a lot of guts under
the hood. But there were occasions when we were
in the GTO. That Old Goat made plenty of power
with the 400ci motor that had some head work
done. I guess that is when the “bug” bit me. I have
had a fascination for cars ever since then.
I have always liked the muscle cars of old, but there
is something about a Tri-Five Chevy; all the chrome
and stainless set it apart. I have owned (4) ‘57’s
and (1) ’55 Bel Air. Currently, I own a red ’57 and
this two-tone ’55, both Bel Air hardtops. I also have
a ’70 Chevelle SS, LS-6 and a ’69 Corvette
Convertible big block. One of my favorites was an
all original ’57 Bel Air Convertible. It was a lot of fun
but, being an original car, it had its “quirks”. I don’t
think there is a nicer convertible ever made than the
’57.
The two muscle cars I have are original cars. The
two Bel Airs I have are “Resto-Mods”. “Today’s
technology, with yesterdays look” is the way I like to
describe the Bel Air’s I own now. Both have the
modern features of today such as power disc
brakes, power steering, A/C, Auto Trans w/OD,
Chevy 350 crate motors, one with fuel injection, 18”
wheels & tires and other amenities. There is
nothing like going to the car show with the A/C
blowing nice and cold during the summer months
here in Texas. The two muscle cars I have are big
blocks and throw a lot of heat, especially without
any A/C!
My family enjoys the cars. I have two children, Joe
(8) and Jenna (5) and my wife Becky (I don’t think
she would want me to put her age). The kids love
to ride in the cars around the neighborhood,
especially when they get to sit in my lap and get to
drive. My son is partial to my ’57 and my daughter
likes the coral and grey ’55. The correct color is

Tri Five Corvettes Highlight Bloomington Gold Vette Show

Editors Note – DACC member Bill Preston is currently doing a
complete restoration on his 1957 Corvette that is sure to be a
eyecatcher will completed. Recently Bill and wife Diane took a
trip to the mega Corvette event known as Bloomington Gold, a
true trip to Corvette Heaven! Here is their experience from that
trip to Illinios for this big show.

We’ve been into Corvettes since 1969 and just this year
made it to Bloomington Gold for the first time! We just
wanted to see the legendary event and, of course Bill
needed to buy some parts.
We arrived at the show late Friday afternoon and had time to
see the 1960 Anniversary cars (honoring the 50th year for
those models), zip through the vendor area and look over
the auction cars before things started to close down at 5 pm.
On Saturday, we mostly enjoyed the ‘Survivor Corvette’
area. The fastest growing trend in the collector car hobby is
these original cars that have not been restored. People are
recognizing the value of original cars. They are our only
glimpse into the automotive past and allow us to study first
hand the way manufacturing techniques were carried out
during America’s earlier automobile production. Among
those earning survivor status this year was the #10 1957
Corvette, which was used by Zora Arkus Duntov as the
prototype for the first fuel injected car. It is well-documented
and it can be yours for $700,000! David Burroughs has
launched a fascinating new event dedicated to original
collector cars called The Survivor Collector Car show.
We spent the rest of the day in the vendor area, watching
the all-Corvette Mecum auction and looking at all the
Corvettes for sale in the car corral. A friend of ours had
driven his van and told Bill he would bring home any parts
Bill bought. So Bill got an aluminum radiator, dash and rear
wiring harnesses, 5 qt. oil pan, and assorted other doodads
for his ‘57 Corvette restoration that is in progress.
By 4 pm I looked for some air conditioned, sit down space
and attended a panel discussion with the first 10 inductees
into the Great Hall, including Bill McDorman, Al Knoch, Vette
Vues’ Bill Wolf and Dick Gulstrand. Each year for 5 years,
10 people and 10 Corvettes will be inducted into the Great
Hall.
Bloomington Gold is honoring the pioneers of the Corvette
Phenomenon from 1970-2014. Unlike other organizations
that feature mainly GM people who developed the Corvette,
the Great Hall will feature people who developed the
Corvette hobby and industry over the past 40 years. This is
the first time the pioneers of Corvette collecting,
racing, education, restoration and aftermarket
manufacturing
have
been
recognized.
Cars inducted included the 1953 Motorama
prototype, Corvette SS racer, 1963 split window
coupe,
and
the
first
airbox
Corvette.
We never made it out to the judging area, the club
parking sites, or the massive general Corvette
parking area, where folks hang out for all four
days. If you haven’t been to Bloomington Gold, you
ought to go at least once!

Canyon Coral/Shadow Grey. But, she calls it the
“pink one”. My wife likes the Corvette, as it is a
convertible. I have often considered buying a ’56
Nomad so I would have a complete set of “TriFives”, unfortunately I don’t have the room.
For the most part, all my cars are finished and are
ready to be driven and enjoyed; although, the
cleaning and polishing never seems to end. I
have continued to add some chrome pieces to the
two Bel Air’s in the engine compartments, you can
never have too much chrome!!! Hope to see you
all at the car shows!

days of activities that include the Show-NShine Judging, Drive In Movie Night
(showing American Graffiti), drag racing at
Denton’s Northstar Dragway, Poker Run,

Arlington 4th Of July Parade Recap
It’s not to often that you get rainy and cool weather on

the 4 of July in Texas but it did just that last month
when DACC appeared in the big Independence Day
Parade in Arlington. Regardless, the parade went on
as planned and turned out to be a big success!
Thanks to George Johnson for making the
arrangements for our club to be in the parade that
featured James and Trish Sparrow with their ’56 Bel
Air, George Johnson with his ’56 Nomad, Greg and
Bev Hedum with their ’55 Bel Air and Larry and Dianne
Epperson with their ’57 Bel Air.
