MARINA
APPROACH BY SEA
PORTCHESTER LAKE
ENTRANCE
AT PILE NO.78 CALL
PORT SOLENT ON VHF CH.
80 AND REQUEST A LOCK IN
The entrance to Portchester
Lake, which is about a mile
north of the harbour entrance,
is marked to the west by pile
No.57 and to the east by pile
No.95. The whole channel is
marked by red piles to the west,
numbered 57 to 74 (leave to port)
and by green piles to the east
running from 95 to 75. Twenty of
the piles are lit by navigational
lights (see chart extract opposite).
In season, the upper section is
well marked by moored yachts.
Out of season, beware of many
unlit moorings on both sides of
the channel. From pile No.80 turn
slowly almost due north to pile
No.79 avoiding the shallow water
immediately north of pile No.80.
At low tide keep to the port side
of the channel to pile No.72A,
thereafter cross to the starboard
side of the channel to pile No.76.
pile No.75 opens the channel
between rows of piled yacht
moorings.

Foul Ground Bouys
Brick Kiln Lake
At night make for pile No.57 approximately 1 mile north of
the harbour entrance this marks
the entrance to Portchester
Channel. You should also look
for pile No.95 until the channel
opens. Both these piles are
visible at 3.2 miles. Immediately
to the north of pile No.94 are
two unlit spherical yellow buoys
marking foul ground and these
should be left to starboard.
Although the channel in the
south is wide, the best water
is defined by large buoys, which
are not lit, and should be left to
port. At night this reach of the
channel is clearly defined by lit
starboard hand piles No’s 93,
92, 90, 88 and 86.

movements, it will sound five short
blasts. Make your intentions clear.
2. Keep to the Small Boat
Channel in the west side of the
harbour entrance.
3. Keep well to starboard in all
channels. If you have to cross a
main channel, do so at right
angles and only when clear of
large vessels.
4. The speed limit within the
harbour is 10 knots with an
advisory limit of 5 knots at
Portchester.
5. Craft fitted with engines must
use them in between Ballast and
the No 4 Bar.
6. In fog or poor visibility, stay
alongside. If caught out seek a
safe berth or anchorage as soon
as possible.
7. The main marine VHF channel
for control of shipping by QHM
is 11, you may find it useful to
listen in if you have it because it
gives you a good idea of
shipping movements.
8. You are not allowed to stop or
linger in the range safety arcs of
Tipner Range. The limits are
marked to the south by pile No’s
62 and 87 and to the north by
pile No’s 70 and 78.
9. Navigational piles should not
be approached too closely as
many are on mudbanks which
are steep in most parts but
beginning to edge into the
channel in some places.
10. The master of a vessel
navigating the Dockyard Port
should navigate the vessel with
care and caution and in such
a manner as to not cause
annoyance to the occupants
of any other vessel, or cause
damage or danger to any other
vessel or to any moorings or
other property.

From the west: Motorway
access is via the M27 at junction
12. Branch left, signposted
A27 Paulsgrove, then merge
onto the A27. Follow the A27
into Southampton Road. Turn
left onto Port Way, signposted
Port Solent.
From the east: At Hilsea, branch
left, off the A27. Then at the
roundabout take the 2nd exit
onto Western Road – A27 –

A27 into Southampton Road
past Tesco. Immediately under
the motorway bridge filter left at
the lights into Portway,
signposted Port Solent.
From Portsmouth: Take the
M275 and follow the signs.
As you clear the buoys, in the
vicinity of pile No.63 to port,
and pile No.88 to starboard, the
channel narrows and starts a long
left-hand bend. North of 86 the
best water now lies close to the
three port piles No.66, No.67 and
No.68. On the right-hand side
opposite these piles is Tipner Lake.
This entrance is marked by two
piles red No.82 and green No.85.
TO PORT SOLENT BY BUS
The former on the starboard side
of the main channel can cause
confusion. As you proceed around
the bend the gates at lit piles
No.68 to port and No.80 to
starboard mark the sharp turn left
into the final section of channel
with Portchester Castle to port.

Free flow times are approximate and subject to air pressure, weather and basin levels. During free flow the tide through the lock may run faster than expected.
All tide times and heights are corrected to local time and chart datum – no further adjustment is required. Heights are in metres.

Free flow times are approximate and subject to air pressure, weather and basin levels. During free flow the tide through the lock may run faster than expected.
All tide times and heights are corrected to local time and chart datum – no further adjustment is required. Heights are in metres.
