Letter
from
the
Director
2012 is going to be a very big year downtown! Everyone is buzzing about the
Main Street Makeover, a joint effort of the Michigan Department of Transportation
(MDOT), the City of Rochester and the Rochester Downtown Development Authority
(DDA). The purpose of the project is to reconstruct Main Street from the Clinton
River Bridge to the Paint Creek Bridge, improve water service to the area and to add
streetscape improvements to enhance the overall downtown experience. For more
details and a detour map, see pages 18-19.
While the Makeover is just getting underway, behind the scenes, we’ve been
working on this project for over two years – planning, investigating and assembling
the best team possible to ensure that it will be a success. And, it is no accident that we
are calling it the Main Street Makeover, focusing on the positive impact this project will
have on downtown. We’re giving it our own Hollywood spin and you’ll see the results
across all of our marketing and events this summer.
And speaking of events, in addition to all of the downtown summer events that
you know and love, we are bringing back a favorite that is “ewenique” to Rochester.
That’s right, back by popular demand, it’s The Ewe Revue 2. In 2001, sheep created
by local artists and sponsored by local businesses dotted the landscape of Rochester.
For The Ewe Revue 2, the sheep are going Hollywood. Notable members of the flock
include Lady Baa-Baa, Captain Jack Spbaaarow and Dr. McSheepy.
As the project progresses, we expect to discover some interesting finds, including
the original brick Main Street. We plan to repurpose those bricks into the streetscape
planters and seating areas, while having many available for sale as mementos of
Rochester. For a sneak preview of the bricks, check out the Made in Rochester section
on page 14.
We know that this summer is going to be challenging. We will
continue to communicate the status of the project through our website
(RochesterMainStreetMakeover.com) and our Facebook Page (facebook.com/
downtownrochester), while still producing the fantastic events that downtown is
famous for. Downtown, we have committed to being “relentlessly positive” about the
project. We hope that you will join us in that positive outlook and continue to support
downtown this summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Main Street Makeover?
The Main Street Makeover is a joint effort of the Michigan
Department of Transportation (MDOT), the City of Rochester and
the Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The
purpose of the project is to reconstruct Main Street from the
Clinton River Bridge to the Paint Creek Bridge, improve water
service to the area and to add streetscape improvements to
enhance the overall downtown experience.
When will the project start?
Work begins in April, with the Second to University closure
scheduled for May 11 to July 15.
When will the project be completed?
The total closure between Second and University is planned
to be open to traffic in July. The total project, including all
streetscape improvements, is planned to be completed by
the fall.
Why are we doing this?
Over the years, the road has deteriorated because of the
heavy volume of truck traffic. MDOT has determined that
reconstruction is the only option to fix the road. Upon
completion, it will be 25-30 years before any substantial repairs
will have to be made to Main Street.
How do I get around downtown?
While the project will be from the Clinton River Bridge to the
Paint Creek Bridge, the only total closure area will be on Main
Street, north of Second Street and south of University Drive.
The detours will be clearly marked and are detailed on the map
included on the next page. This map can also be found on our
web site – www.DowntownRochesterMI.com.
18
www.DowntownRochesterMI.com
How do I get to my favorite business?
All sidewalks will remain open during construction so you
can access businesses from Main Street. Also, the majority of
businesses have entrances from the rear alleys.
Where do I park?
All parking lots will remain open during the project. The only
parking spots not available will be the 94 on Main Street.
Beyond the reconstruction of Main Street, what other
improvements are planned?
The streetscape will be completely rebuilt, including new
exposed aggregate sidewalks, LED lightpoles (in the current
hook & bell style), street trees, additional plantings, new
benches and stamped concrete crosswalks. New water lines will
be installed, replacing a c1890s water main.
Who is paying for this?
The project is being jointly funded by the City of Rochester,
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the
Rochester Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The total
project cost is approximately $7.6 million.
Where can I find current project updates?
Visit www.DowntownRochesterMI.com and the Downtown
Rochester Facebook Page —
www.facebook.com/DowntownRochester.
I have questions – who can I call?
Contact Deputy City Manager Nik Banda at 248/609-0634
or DDA Director Kristi Trevarrow at 248/656-0060.

The
Best Thing I Ever Ate
In Downtown Rochester
It’s no secret that Rochester has some of the best restaurants around. We asked our Facebook Fans
to tell us the best thing they ever ate downtown. See what delectable delights we discovered…
“The Almond Encrusted French Toast with Berry Compote from Downtown
Café on Main Street is delightful. While preparing for the Susan G. Komen
3-Day Walk to fight breast cancer, my friends and I would walk the
Paint Creek Trail each Saturday morning. Afterwards, we would treat
ourselves to breakfast.”
Barbara Chudzik
“The Blackened Mahi-Mahi
Santa Fe Style at Kruse &
Muer on Main. Formerly
living in Florida, it can
be very difficult finding a
capable chef that is able
to capture how to properly
prepare this dish.
Kudos to Kruse & Muer!”
Mark Helsom
“The Turkey Burger at
Chomp with the gluten-free
buns. The food is excellent
and it’s one of the only
places where I can eat
more than a salad with my
wheat allergy.”
Jacquline Grace
“The Cajun Avocado Salmon
Sandwich at Rochester Mills
Beer Co. Perfect Cajun
seasoning, ridiculously
moist and super chipotle
mayo on it.”
Scott Dreslinski
22
www.DowntownRochesterMI.com
“Jimmy’s Pile of Perch from the
Rochester Chop House. It is an
upscale twist on an old-school,
comfort food favorite.”
McKenzie Marie-Margaret
“Knapp’s burger, seasoned
fries and a malt! We
brought in out-of-towners
and even they say it’s the
best they’ve had.”
“My brother comes in town
for Lipuma’s coneys and
fries…he loves it so much we
get him gift cards because
he can go there twice in one
day...loves it.”
James Bertolino
Rebecca Keys Gutov
“O’Connor’s Braizen
Head Beef Brisket and
Yorkshire pudding. To die
for! Mmmmmmmm!”
“Loving Penny Black!! The
brisket & pulled pork with
their homemade bbq sauces
are the best, along with
their Texas Tots dripping in
cheese and jalapenos!!”
Karla Momany
Jennifer Shea
“Three Musketeers and Rock & Roll at
Sumo Sushi. They are very flavorful and
my 6 year old loves them!! My daughter
loves to go there and have the green tea
with her favorite rolls.”
Victoria Bartold
“Maytag Filet, Brookshire Restaurant at the Royal Park
Hotel. Between the high quality cut of meat, bleu cheese
crust and wild Michigan mushrooms is, hands down,
the BEST filet I’ve ever had in my life. It was cooked to
perfection and the whole thing practically melted in my
mouth.”
Jenny Myrick
“I love the Bianca Pizza
at Georgio’s. The ricotta
cheese makes it melt in your
mouth. The Bianca is also
great with Italian sausage
and palamino sauce.”

Paint a Miracle
By Shelly Tyshka, Executive Director
400 Water, Suite LL4, 248/652-2702
T
ucked away on the lower
level of the historic Rochester
Knitting Mills building on
Water Street, you will find a dynamic
and inspiring art studio called Paint a
Miracle. Paint a Miracle’s unique art
program for children and adults living
with disabilities has been attracting
artists and community supporters for
almost 10 years.
Although Paint
a Miracle offered
its first art class in
2002, its story began
Paint a Miracle was
founded by the family
of Rochester area
pediatric dentist,
Dale Propson, in
response to a family tragedy. In
May 1985, a drunk driver struck Dr.
Propson’s car, and the accident left
him with a massive brain injury and
loss of sight. After years of therapy,
Dr. Propson discovered art as a means
to foster creativity, friendships, and
a sense of self-worth. He suggested
opening Paint a Miracle so others
could benefit as he had. The family
became determined to make his vision
Dr Dale Propson,
PAM Founder
a reality. Thus began Paint a Miracle.
Paint a Miracle began offering
one weekly art class at the Rochester
Community House in fall 2002.
Demand grew, and, in June 2004,
Paint a Miracle opened its own
location in downtown Rochester. In
2009, Paint a Miracle moved to its
current location on Water Street.
Paint a Miracle’s
purpose is to enrich the
quality of life of people living
with disabilities through
fine art experiences. Paint a
Miracle serves artists of all
ages, abilities and income
levels. Artists are offered
the opportunity to explore
a variety of mediums and
techniques with emphasis
placed on individual process, creativity
and expression. Class sizes are
small to permit for individualized
instruction, and the studio offers a
variety of adaptive equipment to assist
artists in the creative process. In addition to offering art
classes, Paint a Miracle exhibits and
sells its artists’ work at its studio
and throughout the community.
Over the past 10 years, Paint
a Miracle’s artwork has been
featured at a number of venues,
including Crittenton Hospital’s
Outpatient Rehabilitation Center,
Oakwood Hospital, and TCF Bank
in Rochester Hills. Paint a Miracle
also participates in the Downtown
Rochester Gallery Strolls, and
each year the studio hosts Images
of Inspiration, its annual spring
luncheon, featuring over 300 pieces of
artists’ works.
Paint a Miracle had the distinct
honor of being awarded the 2011 Art
& Culture Sunrise Pinnacle Award
from the Rochester Regional Chamber
of Commerce. The studio was also
recently featured on Mitch Albom’s
Heart of Detroit program on Channel 4.
Paint a Miracle’s Executive Director,
Shelly Propson Tyshka, credits the
studio’s successes to its incredible
artists, staff, volunteers, and the
Rochester community. “The residents
and businesses of Rochester have
been enthusiastic and supportive. We
truly feel that we have a home here.”

Spotlight
Peter Stuhlreyer, AIA, Designhaus
301 Walnut, 248/601-4422
www.designhaus.com
I
n 2007 Designhaus relocated from
111 Second into 301 Walnut, a 156
year old church.
Under the direction of Chief
Architect, Peter Stuhlreyer, AIA,
301 Walnut has been crafted into
a complimentary collection of
creative businesses, including his
own, Designhaus. Designhaus was
founded by Mr. Stuhlreyer in 1998
in downtown Rochester and provides
architecture and design services in
many markets and locations.
We asked Peter to tell us a little
about his vision for locating his
business in a historic building:
I realized when taking over
the whole building, that if I wanted
a mixed use facility with tangible
synergy, it would need a food and drink
establishment. People are brought
together by food...and once they are
together, the collaboration can begin.
It was my wife that identified Adam
Buschbacher, owner of a collection of
restaurants and entertainment venues
in Lexington, MI as a possible addition
to 301 Walnut. Adam visited the
century and a half old sanctuary and
knew it was a fit for his latest concept,
Smackwater Jack’s Neighborhood
36
www.DowntownRochesterMI.com
Café. Rochester will
be the first of several,
and will serve as the
benchmark of character.
There are 7 tenants,
including a professional
photographer (whose work
is featured in this article)
and Smackwater Jack’s.
The list is as follows:
• Designhaus:
Architecture,
Interiors and Landscape
• Avripas Construction Management:
General Contractor
• Smackwater Jack’s:
Restaurant and Coffee Bar
• Something Fabulous:
Event Designers
• Seven South: IT Consulting and
Web Design
• Auburn Painting: Commercial and
Residential Custom Painter
• Brian Walters Photography:
Aerial, Portraits, Buildings,
Landscapes, Events
In addition to these businesses,
several non-profits utilize the
conference facilities in the evenings.
Once the keystone to the tenant
mix was secured (the restaurant),
I branded the building “The Old
Church Suites”. A
major challenge, and
a practical concern
for everyone in the
building has been to
maintain efficiency
while creating an open
flow and still have each
of the tenants secured,
as all have different
hours. I had to break
the mold of a long
hallway and numbered
doors; coming to 301
Walnut had to be an experience, no
matter who you are there to visit or
work for...your visit will likely expand
into unexpected conversations.
Most of us do business together,
and on some projects, several tenants
of the Old Church Suites combine
efforts. I will often grab a coffee at
Smackwater, link up to the WIFI and
sit down with Greg Johnson from
Seven South to talk about computer
upgrades, and right next to me will be
photographer Brian Walters with Kim
Allen from Something Fab discussing
photography details for their next
big social event. It just works. The
energy is palpable and no matter
what kind of Monday morning blues
you are feeling, a stroll around the
Old Church Suites is the cure.
Ultimately, my objective was
to create a showcase of vignettes;
creative design elements, lighting
strategies, technology integration
and ever changing experiments that
would encourage all of the employees
and tenants to be more creative and
more open minded. It is basically a
reflection of my philosophy regarding
design (and life); that all good things
are a careful blend of unyielding order
and uncultivated spontaneity.
