Pacific Stages to Present Concert Reading of

The innovative art laboratory ESMoA is setting the
stage for theatre in El Segundo, California, with a
concert reading of Abundance, Pulitzer Prize-winning
playwright Beth Henley’s stingingly funny yet touching
drama, staged by Pacific Stages. Scheduled for August
7 & 8 at ESMoA at 208 Main Street in El Segundo, the
reading marks the first production by Pacific Stages
since 2011.
ESMoA will set quite a stage for Abundance. Sliverwide yet comfortably deep, the space has been the
scene of myriad “art experiences” since opening in
January 2013, including installations, retrospectives,
performance art, and even artful culinary technique.
The art laboratory is deeply committed to offering art to
El Segundo – whether it is installed on a wall or is read from a chair.
Similarly, Pacific Stages believes that arts have the power to strengthen community and enrich the human spirit, and is
dedicated to invigorating and elevating appreciation of great dramatic literature. Launched in 2004, Pacific Stages
produces, presents and performs early, new, and lesser-known works by some of the best American playwrights, and
supports the next generation of storytellers through development and commissions.
Abundance certainly fits Pacific Stages’ bill. Funny and touching, the play follows mail-order brides Bess and Macon on
their 25-year journey across the American frontier, reveling in their friendship, apparently strong enough to withstand a
kidnapping and other outrageous catastrophes – including their husbands.
The reading of Abundance at ESMoA is directed by Robert Bailey and produced by Jeryll Adler. The cast includes
Melanie Lora and Jocelyn Towne as the mail order brides, and Mark St. Amant and Gabriel Olds as errant husbands. All
are members of The Artists Company of Pacific Stages. Darren Kelley rounds out the cast.
Pacific Stages work has earned them admiration in the South Bay and throughout Los Angeles. The group has staged
more than 30 readings since 2005 and received four Ovation nominations and a win of Best New Play for its world
premiere production in El Segundo of Something Happened, which also won a GLAAD Best Los Angeles Theatre Award.
