Terra’s NitroPlex™ Desiccator Control System
optimizes nitrogen purge efficiency for the most
demanding applications, when every second of
moisture exposure counts.
The NitroPlex™ is the only humidity control system that combines
the monitoring and control capabilities required in zero-tolerance
applications with miniaturized semiconductor components, bio/
pharmaceutical samples and other moisture-sensitive materials.
Chamber-by-Chamber Multiplexed %RH Monitor/
Control
A separate high-accuracy, miniaturized humidity module in each
desiccator chamber provides independent monitor/control
capability. Each module can be programmed locally or remotely to
maintain a humidity set point from ambient down to 0%RH.
Nitrogen is directed only where needed to keep the %RH level
below the critical set point.
Cuts System Recovery Time to Seconds
Desiccators controlled by a flowmeter may require an hour or
more to regain a humidity set point after a chamber access door
is opened. When doors are opened repeatedly, humidity levels
can remain above the critical set point for an entire work day.
Testing shows that the NitroPlex™ cuts this recovery time by over
400% in a 4-chamber desiccator (see sidebar below). In Terra’s
Microccator™ this recovery time is cut to a matter of seconds,
eliminating moisture-caused damage (see photo on facing page).
Product Safety Alarm
The NitroPlex™ eliminates another common cause of moisture
exposure: access doors mistakenly left open or ajar. The system
directs a high-flow nitrogen purge to any chamber the moment
its door is opened. If the door remains opened longer than a
specified delay time, the NitroPlex™ issues warning alarms to alert
personnel to the problem.

Immediately, moisture-laden air backfills the cabinet. The measure of an
efficient humidity control system is how quickly the cabinet can remove
moisture and recover the initial humidity set point.
In a large desiccator with a flowmeter and a single bleed valve, this recovery
can take up to an hour. If, during this recovery period, another door is opened,
the process begins again. Moisture may remain present in the storage enclosure
during the entire duration of a working shift — negating your investment in
desiccator storage and slashing your product yields.
Terra’s Dual Purge™ and NitroWatch™ systems improve system recovery time
by initiating a high-flow purge when a door opens or humidity creeps above
a set point threshold. This variable purging speeds up moisture removal, but
recovery can still take up to 40 minutes if only one bleed valve is present (see
Figure 1).
Simply by installing Terra’s Automatic RB™ (Relief/Bleed) Valve in each chamber,
you can cut both the system recovery time and the nitrogen consumption in
half (see Figure 2). This configuration minimizes moisture migration – water
vapor is purged out of the chamber it enters.

For optimal efficiency, however, a desiccator requires chamber-by-chamber
humidity sensing and purge control. Only Terra’s NitroPlex™ system delivers
this purge efficiency (see Figure 3). A NitroPlex™ desiccator typically saves up
to 77% in nitrogen cost. More importantly, it cuts system recovery time by
400%, ensuring dry storage under real-world operating conditions.

Datalogging – Complete Product Assurance
The NitroPlex™ control system includes capabilities for logging data to a
remote PC for subsequent analysis.
A serial port downloads data to a remote PC for display and analysis. For
optimal convenience, Terra offers the SmartPlex™: a hand-held computer
with software customized to your NitroPlex™ cabinet and application
requirements. The SmartPlex™ allows convenient remote programming of
chamber set points. It also provides a graphical display of current humidity
and set point conditions in each NitroPlex™ chamber and records these data
for archiving or analysis.
This datalogging capability provides a detailed, traceable storage
and access history for every chamber of a NitroPlex™ desiccator – an
invaluable tool in R&D experiments.

Terra’s Desiccator Cleanliness
Terra desiccators feature non-particulating, easy-clean, cleanroom-compatible
materials to ensure a non-contaminating environment for sensitive materials.
Particle deposition testing reveals minimal detectable contamination of test
wafers stored inside a Terra desiccator — an average of much less than one
particle @ 0.16 micron over a 12-hour period, which lies within the typical
deviation of the test equipment.

Its quick-response feedback system continuously monitors the cabinet’s
relative humidity level and activates a purge of dry nitrogen only when
needed. The system thus economizes on gas consumption and minimizes the
possibility of overpressures that can stress cabinet seals. Comparison testing

The NitroPlex™ system provides state-of-the-art automated humidity control to guarantee the integrity
of stored components.
Each microprocessor-based multiplexed sensor/display module, one installed in each chamber, enhances
desiccator performance and economizes on nitrogen expenses. It contains a miniaturized moisture sensor
that reads the internal humidity level within ± 2% of full scale. The LED readout displays this value or the
programmable set point for that chamber.

These mobile storage carts transport components from one location to another while maintaining critical
low-humidity and low-particle conditions.
Each houses a hermetically sealed desiccator storage chamber, which maintains clean, dry storage conditions
during parts transport. Desiccators feature opposing access doors for pass-through convenience, and
every door is equipped with a LiftLatch™.
Quick connect/disconnect fittings (optional) enable you to purge the system with nitrogen while it is

Kiticcator™ Kitting
Tray Desiccator
This desiccator provides organized, space-efficient storage
of kitting trays (tote boxes) in a clean, dry, static-safe
environment.
Electropolished stainless steel wire racks are designed
specifically for secure storage of any of three common
tote boxes (see ordering information below). Trays can
be inserted and removed without disturbing any others
in the cabinet.
Like Terra’s other desiccators, these hermetically sealed
cabinets are designed to maintain particle-free, lowhumidity storage conditions when purged with nitrogen
or clean dry air (see purge controllers on page 18).
Tote Boxes (for Kiticcators)
Made of durable, static-dissipative highdensity polyethylene thermoplastic. Meets

These desiccators employ a Faraday-cage design that completely shields stored
parts against electrostatic charges. Static-dissipative PVC construction controls
surface charges and the particles they attract (acrylic models also available).
All models come with removable stainless steel trays mounted on
noncontaminating runners. Select models with or without stainless steel insert
packages, which provide convenient storage bins for 2" waffle (die) packs.

Humidifier
This acrylic cabinet is customized for
storage of polycarbonate films used for
high-precision screening of circuit boards.
It maintains critical relative humidity and
temperature levels to prevent dimensional
aberrations that result from exposure to
humidity and temperature fluctuations.
AC/Heater
Air circulates horizontally across the shelves
that hold the film. As air exits the storage
area, it passes through an air conditioning/
heating module that conditions it to within
± 2°F of the temperature set point. In
addition, the continuously operating A/C
Top View
module removes moisture to keep the
%RH level within ± 3% of the set point. If humidity falls too low, an ultrasonic humidifier
cycles on to add the proper amount of water vapor. If the temperature falls too low,
the heater module cycles on. A water filtration system removes contaminants from the
humidification feed water to eliminate the chance of mineral deposits or other vaporborne contaminants.
As the process air exits the RH/temperature modules, an impeller blower draws it into
an intake plenum area and forces it uniformly back through the storage area.

Standard models below include a reinforced cabinet of
the specified size and material, a sliding access shield, and a
fluorescent illuminator. Select sinks, baths, etchers and other
processing modules to suit your application. A raised lip
surrounds the work area to contain spills, and a full-length
plenum sink located under the deck contains overflow for
easy disposal (select plenum flush for easy cleaning).
A control panel mounted to the side of the deck provides
safe, convenient access to all system controls (order
processing sinks and baths separately; see pricing and
specifications at TerraUniversal.com). Optional Filter/Blower
Module provides a vertical laminar flow of HEPA-filtered air

environment for critical processing operations. Their modular design lets you

Dual side access doors open inward to allow easy parts transfer from inside

the structural rigidity of the door by a factor of five. A built-in LiftLatch securely

Series 300 Glovebox with Constant Temperature Module No. 1694-75
Refrigerated Glovebox
Ideal for many testing and processing applications, Terra Universal’s Constant
Temperature Control System incorporates heating and refrigeration modules that
maintain a stable temperature between -25°F and 120°F inside a fully integrated
glove box. The complete system consists of a compressor/condenser, a heater, and
an evaporator cooler with an integral fan mounted inside the chamber. The closedloop refrigeration unit operates with CFC-free coolant and uses a RTD sensor with an
internal bypass to prevent temperature overshoot. The sensor provides continuous
temperature display, and a standard controller allows the user to establish a constant
temperature set point. PLC-based recipes are available for multiple temperature cycles.
