AUGUST 2006 KnockOff Page AUGUST 2006 KNOCK ff Official Publication of the Mohawk-Hudson Region Sports Car Club of America 50th Anniversary GALA CELEBRATION A GREAT HIT! July 16, 2006, Saratoga Springs, NY. The Saratoga Automobile Museum was the venue for the gala celebration of the 50th Anniversary celebration for Mohawk-Hudson SCCA. Members, friends, past participants and notables filled the museum. Attendance was greater than anticipated with about 160 guests & members. All those attending deemed it a resounding success. Many thanks to the planning commitee: Dave McClumpha, Greg Rickes, Jim Bucci, Peter Kroth with assistance from Roly Heacox, Art Fredericks and Dave Wachtel. A short well-prepared program was presented with Greg Rickes as master of ceremonies. Ron Hedger representing the auto museum spoke briefly followed by RE Gene Tricozzi who introduced current office holders and dignitaries present as well as those not attending. Greg introduced three podium guests: Dave McClumpha, Art Fredericks and Roly Heacox, each guest giving a colorful glimpse of the club’s early years. A silent auction organized by Dominic Karl proved to be excitng as well as profitable. Diane Smith became a human pitbull to win the 3-hour limo ride for their daughter Shelby’s Sept. wedding. Nick Karl made the big mistake of bidding on many items to get things started. Ah, well, live, learn and pay the man. Everyone seemed in great spirits while enjoying the collection of Jim Taylor auto treasures as well as the company of a great many of MoHud’s past and present elite. A fun time was had by all!! Above: Ron Hedger from the Saratoga Auto Museum speaks to the crowd. At left, Craig Robertson and Peter Kroth welcome an incoming guest in the reception area. GO KART NIGHT! I went to Lime Rock on Monday night to register and get my tech sticker. The weather looked suspect but I didn’t think much about it because I hadn’t checked the weather report. Well, I can tell you, I have seen some hard rains but this was amazing. I was in the registration building when the storm started. It didn’t take long for the power to go out. Fortunately, there was help on the way with the arrival of a Coleman lantern followed by a generator to bring back the power. Race day proved to be interesting as well, with a dry morning followed by a wet midday. This made for an interesting race for those who qualified in the dry and raced in the wet, that was my situation. I was in the first race group (Spec Miata) which is always interesting regardless. I was keeping it clean but not fast until the car in front of me spun and I couldn’t resist following him off course in the left-hander. The good part, as it turned out, I was not in the bog and able to drive out. The bad part was I returned at the back of the pack. SARA O MUSEUM SARATTOGA AUT AUTO WELCOMES JOHN FIT CH EXHIBIT FITCH “Mercedes-Benz Presents John Fitch: An American Racing Hero.” An exhibit featuring one of a kind cars, photographs, and video celebrating legendary race-car driver John Fitch’s career and contribution to motorsports. July 29th through November 14th; 110 Avenue of the Pines, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-587-1935); daily 10am5pm; $7 adults, $5 seniors, $3.50 children 6yrs and older. www.saratogaautomuseum.org Well it was fun anyway. This year’s race proved to be a challenge, with the 4th falling on a Tuesday and then weather creating some havoc. The club’s race results are being compiled and will be presented when complete. The 50th anniversary celebration was a great success. I can’t think of a better setting to hold an anniversary celebration for a club such as ours. I heard an approximate number of 156 attendees. That was a pleasant surprise, one I was hoping for. There were many dignitaries in attendance as well: Robert Introne, Chairman of SCCA’s Board of Directors; John Sheridan, Area 10 Director; and Kathy Barnes, NER regional exec., to name a few. I also want to thank Ron Hedger of the Saratoga Auto Museum and Greg Rickes our Master of Ceremonies. Ron announced the appointment of Tom Campbell to the museum Board of Directors, congratulations Tom. As a reminder, our August membership meeting will be replaced with our night at the Go-kart track. See the attached time and directions in this edition. Hope to see everyone there. As a reminder submissions to the KO should be emailed to Lisa Hanifan and the deadline is the 15th of the month. I do look forward to any input. Mohud Trophy Winners were: Andy Furlong, 1st in EP, VW Rabbit; Tom Hansen, 3rd in STS, pesky red Honda Civic; Joe Sell, 4th in STS, same pesky red Honda Civic(they are everywhere, car owner of 3rd place Tom Hansen by the way). Other Finishes: Bruce Kosakoski, 2nd in FSP, BMW 320i; I, myself, came in 5th in SM, Nissan 240sx; Bert Huiest, DFL in STS, BMW 318ti; Mickey Mossaidis, 4th in STX, another pesky red Honda Civic. Fortunately, I have only good news to report, so I’m thankful to say here’s my final update. First of all, I’m extremely grateful to all of you who have been so wonderful in offering your expressions of caring and support. I simply can’t express my profound gratitude to you for all you’ve done to buoy my spirits over an often times rough eight months. Your emails, phone calls, and visits have been incredibly uplifting. They’ve also motivated me to face my challenges with a sense of confidence and peace, and I firmly believe that’s been no small part of the heartening progress I’ve experienced. Here’s where things stand at the moment. I’ve recovered nearly 100% from the surgery to remove my lung tumor. The truth is, on most days I have absolutely no evidence of that surgery at all. And while I continue to undergo hormonal therapy to treat my prostate cancer, just today I completed the nine-week regimen of radiation therapy. No more daily zapping! Given that radiation is an aggressive therapy for curing prostate cancer, I’ve now reached a significant milestone, for sure. In about nine months I’ll be able to confirm that the radiation has killed all my cancer cells. Most patients who undergo a combination of hormonal and radiation therapy for prostate cancer experience a rather nasty mix of side effects. I, however, have been incredibly fortunate to have escaped most of those effects...perhaps because of the many prayers you have offered on my behalf. For that, I can never thank you enough. So, my prospects for the future are extremely positive. I’m anxious to recover my full strength, to resume my relationship with the Skip Barber Racing School, and to run some races before the 2006 season draws to a close. All I can say at this point is, “Thank you.” Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel so terribly sorry for the many people who struggle through similar health issues, but who lack the incredible support that all of you have provided me. Please say a prayer for those less fortunate people, that they might derive the same strength of spirit that you’ve imparted to me. Believe me, it has made an immeasurable difference, and I’m so very, very grateful for that. All the very best, Rick Pocock AUGUST 2006 KnockOff Page 11 Please support our Patrons! Mention you saw it in the KnockOff. KnockOff Page 12 AUGUST 2006 Beginning July 12, 2006, the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s website will be a new on-line presence designed for easy navigation. It will enable visitors to find information quickly and efficiently. Steve Potter, the Museum’s executive director said “Traffic on our site has grown rapidly; it’s the main way new visitors are finding out about us. So, our on-line presence is critical to our continued rapid growth...” www.saratogaautomuseum.org, <http://www.saratogaautomuseum.org,> The new site address reflects the Museum’s not-for-profit status. The Museum’s graphic designer, Adrienne Cochrane, directed the redesign, which was executed by Vermont Web Programmers in Middlebury, Vt. The new site features a home page that is at once visually more striking than its predecessor but also more straightforward. Simple navigational features make it easy for a visitor to go directly to the part of any part of the site. “The Museum is in a strikingly beautiful building, and I thought that our website should reflect that,” said Cochrane. “I believe we’ve accomplished that goal. But more important, this new design will facilitate visitors getting the information they need quickly and efficiently.” For More information, visit our website: (www.saratogaautomuseum.org<http:// www.saratogaautomuseum.org>) or call the museum at (518) 587-1935. ANNOUNCING... Saturday, July, 15, 2006 9am -3pm, give three cheers for the Red, White, and Blue, and the T-Birds, Fords, and Chevys, too! Entry to the show field is included with Museum Admission. If that weren’t enough, there are more Classic cars like a 427 Shelby and Boss 429 in the “Driving Passion...The Jim Taylor Collection” exhibit, and Race Cars from New York inside the Museum. Admission is $7 for Adults, $5 for Senior Adults and Active Military, and $3.50 for children ages 6-16. If you’d like to show off your American Car, the registration fee is $5, and cars should be in place by 9am. Trophies for Best in Show and People’s Choice will be awarded. More great Patrons... AUGUST 2006 KnockOff Page August 2006 The season is already about half way over. The Saturday and Sunday event at Fulton-Montgomery Community College on June 24th and 25th was considered a success for both our club and the college. The inaugural event for the College’s car show, according to the College, was well attended despite other Capital Region Area car clubs having shows on the same day. I do believe we did pick up a new member or two because of Saturdays’ event. People who came to look at the Rods at the Car show just had to walk about 200 ft. from the front parking area to the side parking lots to look and see what Solo Competition was all about. Curiosity got the best of some in the show and they signed up to run, got teched and participated. Others signed waivers, asked questions and got a chance to look through the glass of our experienced Solo Cars. I do believe that we had return enthusiasts on Sunday because of this. On the same campus (FMCC) but two different venues I believe this was the first “show and go” type of automotive event I can remember in the area. With the threat of stormy weather to hamper the Regional July 4th Race, rains held off until lunch time and then went away soon after. There was plenty of support this year for the “Chuck Wagon”. With DJ and the other guy, aka Me; the other other guy, aka Bill Bennett; and the other other other guy, aka Ken Lendrum, the Mo-Hud van, aka “Chuck Wagon”, was fully staffed to dispense stuff for the corner workers and all who worked the John Stim Memorial Race. Jack H. and company will no doubt give the ins and outs of the days events. By the time this report is read the 50th Anniversary of Mo-Hud Region at the Saratoga Auto Museum will have take place. Dave McClumpha and Jim Bucci of the Limerock uphill “sound birds’ fame has indicated that it will be well attended. A few of us Solo people will be heading out to western NY to the Seneca Army Depot for the North East Divisional set for July 22nd, and 23rd. Once again we look forward to meeting and competing with our Solo Comrads. Expectations are high with news that the site is very large. We shall see. In ending, there is the fourth points event at FMCC on July 30, hope that this is well attended and the weather gods are with us.
