Welcome
You might ask yourself ‘What makes Bangor so different
to other UK universities?’ and the answer is really quite simple.
Choosing the right
university for you
Choosing a university is one of the most important
decisions you will ever make. Whether you are going
to be studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level,
moving onto higher education involves a huge personal
investment both financially and with regards to time. You may be spending several years of your life at an
institution so you need to take a number of factors
into account.
UK institutions are held in high regard across the world; the degrees awarded are recognised by
employers in any country and students who graduate from the UK are sought after by numerous businesses and organisations. Bangor is proud to be part of this
great tradition, providing education of international
standard and offering superb student support.
We are not only able to offer our
students a safe, friendly, low-cost
study environment in one of the
most spectacular locations in the
world, but also a dynamic system
of learning, teaching and research
which is recognised as being
amongst the best in the UK.
You will want to consider:

The overall environment in which you will be studying

The reputation of the university and individual
academic schools in terms of teaching and research

The quality of the facilities

The support provided to students
Professor John G Hughes,
Vice-Chancellor

will become part of an international
learning community. You will not
only obtain a qualification that will
help you to guarantee success in
your chosen career, but more than
that, you will make friends with

and backgrounds, and make
memories which will last a lifetime.
I look forward to meeting you in Bangor in the future.

Over 125 years
of excellence...
Bangor University was founded in 1884,
making it one of the oldest and most
prestigious universities in the UK.
Bangor University has recently had great
success in the Times Higher Education World
University rankings 2011-12 and is placed
among the world’s top 275 universities.
Why study at Bangor?
World leading research
There are numerous ranking systems used in the
UK to assess the quality of universities and it can
often be confusing for students when deciding
which factors to consider. However, in Bangor’s
case it could not be simpler, we are ranked in the
top 5% of the World’s universities (Times Higher
Education World University Rankings) This reflects
not just the high quality of teaching and research
but also student satisfaction ratings, standard of
facilities on offer and the considerable investment
which we make in supporting each and every
student.
Every 5-6 years the UK Government organises
an analysis of all research conducted at British
universities. This analysis is called the Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE). During the most
recent RAE, Bangor University proved to be
among the very top universities in the UK. The
RAE identified world leading research in all of
Bangor’s 19 assessed subject areas with nearly
50% given the top grading.
Areas of particular excellence include
Accounting and Finance which is ranked
No.1 in the UK, and Electronic Engineering
which is ranked No.2 in the UK.
For more than 125 years, students from all over the world have graduated from Bangor and as a result have
achieved great success in their chosen careers. Today, the University offers over 250 undergraduate / Bachelor
degrees, more than 150 courses at postgraduate level and research in around 40 unique areas.

New facilities...
In order to build upon the achievements and
reputation of the University, over £67 million has
recently been spent on developing our facilities. The results of the multi-million pound investment
can been seen on the University campus, with the
new student residences and academic facilities such
as the Management Centre and the Environment
Centre Wales building. Work has already begun on an
ambitious new £38 million Arts and Innovation Centre.
The project will also include a dynamic innovation hub,
with facilities for interdisciplinary design, enabling
greater engagement with businesses to drive the
development of new products, processes and services.
The new centre called ‘Pontio’ which means to-bridge
in Welsh will include a theatre, cinema space, a
studio theatre and an outdoor amphitheatre. It will be
accompanied by exciting new social facilities including
bars, dining and park areas.
The centre will provide cutting-edge teaching and
learning facilities that will benefit every University
student.

Living in Bangor...
When I typed Bangor,
North Wales into Google,
I found that the city
is known as ‘The City
of Learning’, I thought
to myself, why not be a part of this
learning? As my search went on I
discovered that Bangor University is well
established and was founded in 1884.
I knew I would be studying miles
away from home, so I wanted
the University to be like a second
home and I really felt like it was
my home away from home. The
warm welcoming culture of the
people around, the greenery and the
structure, everything was so perfect
that I fell in love with the place.
Prince William and Catherine Middleton
have been living in Anglesey where the Prince
is based as an RAF Search and Rescue Pilot.
Anglesey is just half an hour away from
Bangor and the princess is often spotted
in the local supermarket.

A Research Masters (MRes) is more research
orientated than a normal taught Masters programme
and is a good route into PhD level study.
A research degree such as a PhD will allow you to
explore your chosen field under your own terms,
driven by your own questions and intrigue under the
guidance of an experienced research professional.
Research degrees take one to two years for an MPhil
qualification and three to four years for a PhD.
More detailed information on all the postgraduate
degree programmes offered by a specific department,
including research interests, modular detail and
admissions details can be found on our website.

Postgraduate
research...
Information for Postgraduate
Research Applicants
In this rapidly changing world, a Postgradauate research
course can be used to serve many different needs and
give you that extra edge that today’s employers are
looking for. Whatever your own academic or professional
goals, Bangor University’s long tradition of academic
excellence will help to get you there.
MPhil/PhD study
A PhD usually takes 3 years to complete on a full-time
basis and 4-5 years if studied as a part-time programme.
To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent
research that will make an original contribution to
knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis.
A MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a
full-time programme and 3-5 years as a part-time
programme. Research at MPhil level should represent
an extension of existing knowledge, although the
demands of originality are less than that for a PhD.
MRes
The Research Masters degree is more researchorientated than a normal taught Masters programme,
usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits
taught (66% / 34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD
level study.
Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum
of academic disciplines engaging in research at national
and international levels. The University provides strong
support for research activities including encouraging

Applying for a PhD or MPhil
Writing a good research proposal
Methodology
If you are applying for a PhD /MPhil you need to have
a good idea of the specific area or theme that you want
to research. Before applying check the specialist area
you wish to study is covered by a member of staff at
Bangor by looking at our staff web pages at:
www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/research/
specialisms This will provide you with a breakdown
of each staff members area of academic focus.
The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a
relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to
carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate
your proposed study and decide if we have the right
staff expertise to supervise you.
In this section describe your approach to collecting and
analysing data. A proposal may plan to use existing data,
gather primary data or do both. Explain the procedures
and techniques you plan to use; the nature of the data;
the methods of data sampling and collection; sources
of information. Here you will demonstrate your
knowledge of alternative social scientific methods and
make the case that your approach is the most suitable
for your research question. Consider questions of access
to data sources and the skills that you will need to carry
out the research.
Once you have found a member of staff whose research
interests broadly match you own, you should contact
them directly with a concise research ‘brief’ that
outlines your proposal and ask whether he/she would
consider supervising your project. If the academic
expresses his/her interest, you may then further
discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil
research proposal.
At this stage, you should formally apply for the
PhD/MPhil programme using the form available
at www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/apply
You should fill the form out thoroughly, including
academic references, your research proposal and the
name of the academic member of staff under whose
supervision you intend the research to be conducted.
The format and length of the proposal is likely to vary
according to the type of project. Typically a proposal is
no less than 1500 words (3-4 pages) long and will cover
the following points.
Title
This should be concise and descriptive.
Background
You should explain the context for your research, the
issues it is concerned with, and the reasons why the
research is important and original. You may need
to describe how it builds on your previous academic
work or professional experience. You must include
references to the existing research and scholarly
literature in your field of research.
Statement of the problem or research questions.
Clearly formulate the problem you propose to research.
This should be expressed as an answerable question,
or set of questions. The problem should be substantial
but manageable within the timescale of a research
degree and it should have originality.
Resources and ethical clearance
Will your research comply with the agreed international
standards for good practice in social research? Using
published ethical guidelines show that you are aware of
the specific documents and clearances you will need.
Project management
You should map out a schedule for your project, from the
start date onwards, showing when you expect to conduct
periods of fieldwork (if applicable) and the time required
for data analysis and writing up your results.
References
You should include a list of the references cited in your
proposal, using Harvard notation. This will be useful for
potential supervisors to evaluate your knowledge of the
research topic.
Design of the project
Describe how the project will be structured and where
it will take place. Key design decisions (say between
experimental, comparative, longitudinal or case study
approaches) should be justified according the way in
which you have defined the research problem. If your
project will be testing hypotheses you should state
them here.

Low cost of living
Working Part-time
Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much
lower than in other parts of the UK. Bangor has been described as
“one of the cheapest places in Britain” to be a student. (The A-Z of
Universities and Higher Education Colleges)
The University’s JobZone offers a free service
to help you find part-time employment. Work
opportunities vary. Usual jobs for students
include helping out in shops and at events and
basic office assistance. International students
can work up to 20 hours per week and full-time
during the holidays. The University does not
recommend you work the full 20 hours during the
term because studying in the UK is intensive and
you will need to make sure you have enough time
to complete all your course work and reading to
ensure success in your studies. The UK currently
(from 1 October 2011) has a minimum wage of
£6.08 per hour if you are aged 21 years or older
and £4.98 per hour if you are aged 18-20.
As a guide we would recommend that students allow up to
£5,400 for undergraduate study and £7,200 for postgraduate
study to cover accommodation, food and other personal expenses
per year. This figure is a guide and will vary depending on the
individual needs and lifestyle of each student.

can be sure that you are getting the most from your money in
Bangor.

£2,000 will be awarded to applicants who have
exceptional applicants (applications must be received by 1st June 2012)

Study Abroad...
Summer Schools...
Visiting students
Students currently studying at
other universities around the
world can apply to study at
Bangor for 1 semester or a year.
The Study Abroad programme at Bangor is very flexible
and you have access to all academic Schools within the
University. There are few restrictions on what you can
study. You can choose to study all your modules within the
same School or choose modules from across a range of
Schools. You can also choose the course level (1-3) to suit
your background and level of expertise in each subject.
Students currently studying at other universities
around the world can apply to study at Bangor for
1 semester or a year. Every year, well over 100
students from North, Central and South America,
Asia and mainland Europe undertake a semester
or a whole year at Bangor and transfer the credits
achieved to the home University. This means that students who are taking a degree
course at another university can visit Bangor for a
semester or a whole academic year and are able
to transfer the qualifications and credits they’ve
achieved back to their home university – to count
towards their final degree. They complete their
degree within the same amount of time, but benefit
from studying in a different part of the world and
broadening their horizons.
Visiting students enjoy the same service level
and benefits as Bangor University graduating
students. To find out more about the studying
at Bangor as a visiting student please contact
