P.O. Box 25542 London, ON N6C 6B2 This magazine is purchased by the buyer with the understanding that information presented is from various sources from which there can be no warranty or responsibility by Beckett Media, LLC as to the legality, completeness or technical accuracy ou will not find every knife available on the American market within these pages. That’s too daunting a task thanks to the American manufacturers and importers who are constantly pushing for the new, the different, and— sometimes mixed in among the first two—a product that also answers the call for a knife that’s better. Those rare few that are better tend to rise to public consciousness rather fast, but there are great sleepers that are sometimes overlooked. Our desire with the KI Buyers Guide is to bring you some of all of that. Our writers and editors live the “knife life,” so you can review the knives that we feature here with the confidence that they’ve passed a review and received the approval of those who bring you this publication. Not many publications in any field can make that boast. Our research for the knives in this buyers guide took a year in preparation. During that time, our writers and editors visited almost every knife exhibitor at the SHOT Show, Blade Show and dozens of smaller shows in between. We have reviewed the catalogs of every knife company we could find, surfed their websites, prowled through their CDs and thumb drives they pass along. And in the final analysis, on a great many of the knives you see here, we have handled them, cut with them, and carried them for a period of time. We have compared notes with our other brothers of the blade, and followed the scent of every knife to which was said to us, “Have you seen how neat that one is?” Y “ … on a great many of the knives you see here, we have handled them, cut with them, and carried them for a period of time. ” I term it “participatory journalism.” As one of my favorite writers once said about guns (I paraphrase with knives as the subject), “Take a knife and lay it on a table and it lays there. Put it in someone’s hands and you are apt to have a story.” We do not have all of the good and great knives here, but we do have a goodly portion that we recommend. Think about that the next time you punch “knives” into Google and come up with 117,000 different websites featuring knives. Hopefully, we will reduce your search for the perfect knife down to those within these few pages, and give you more time to take your knives out in the field and have some fun! KI KI_1301_7 10/9/12 4:24 AM Page 7 KI-BG3-TIPS.qxp 10/9/12 11:50 PM Page 8 Smart KNIFE Buying BY J. BRUCE VOYLES Knife buying is easy. See one that catches your eye, plop down the cash, hand the cashier the plastic card, or type in the right passwords on your keyboard, and you are now a knife owner. BUYING THE RIGHT KNIFE ust like the shirt that seemed to fit in the store or the new shoes that felt comfortable when you tried them on at the mall, there’s more to buying the right knife than you might think. A knife that catches your eye today may gratify that first flash of desire, but in the long run, when you actually have to use the thing, that moment of inspired purchase may not be as accurate as you might have hoped. Here’s a brief rundown of questions you may want to ask yourself before you buy. J What are you going to use it for? No need to buy a heavy blade tactical if you peel a lot of apples. Make a small list of what you actually use your knife for in the course of a normal day. Throw in a few extras on those abnormal days. Your knife should fulfill most of those needs. Just-in-case In today’s urban anti-gun climate (and anti-knife to some extent), the most potent legal option is often to carry a knife for defense. If you could envision that possibility then size and strength of your knife becomes an increased requirement. Can you carry it legally? If you’re a schoolteacher or work in a courthouse or airport, it’s likely that your knife will be resting in your car’s console quite a bit. If where you work 8 “ Buy the most knife you can for the money. Only you know what that is. ” has a blade length restriction, again, that has to figure into your knife selection. Do you like it? What knife feels right in your hand and your pocket? Keep in mind that you will be toting it around a whole lot more than you will actually be cutting with it. Pocket comfort is a more important consideration than many people think. buy the most knife you can for the money. Only you know what that is. And finally… the big decision After you’ve narrowed down your choices for use, carry, price and personal appeal, the one you buy is easy. Buy the one that, when you look at it, in that faraway nether region of your subconscious, you hear the words “buy me” emanating from the knife. That’s the one to buy! KI KNIFE SAVVY: What are your choices? You will likely have narrowed your choices after you’ve answered all of these questions. A visit to some online stores, your local sporting goods or hardware story, the nearest big-box outdoor retailer, and even a jaunt through the local flea market, will encompass many of the knives available. Check the prices and KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 QUESTIONS TO ANSWER • What are your primary knife uses? • What duties must your knife perform in the “just-in-case” scenario? • What are your limitations for carry? • What are your personal preferences? • What knives fit those needs? • What is your knife budget? • Which one calls out to you? knivesillustrated.com KI_1301_9 10/9/12 4:27 AM Page 9 This one-hander is a no-brainer. A number of items, including the gutsy girl gripping that handle… whether it’s pink or not! By Karen Wilhelmsen PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE MANUFACTURERS o, what makes a knife a “woman’s” knife? More often than not, people would say that it’s the color. But that’s only partially correct. Many women are taking up outdoor sports like hunting and fishing—sports that were traditionally thought of as “male-centric” activities’—with their male counterparts to share the experience as couples, and that’s why the following knives, which feature … are showcased. Here are 10 woman’s knives we like, including the new line by hunting enthusiast Haley Heath of the television show Family Traditions. With Swiss-grown walnut handles, made from environmentally friendly practices and sustainable wood, this multipurpose tool features knives of different sizes, along with wood saws, scissors, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, can openers, nail files and more— in four different designs. The prices range from $59.95 to $129.95 (the one featured here is $59.95; www.wengerna.com). FOR HER IN MIND Browning’s “For Her” line might look “cute,” but Browning intends this series to be for women who take the outdoors as seriously as men do. And they aren’t all pink; you can get one in a neutral bone color. Each is equipped for the rugged 21stcentury woman and includes a nylon sheath. The folders feature a pocket clip. These knives are great for 26 women who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. We recommend the folder ($26.95) or the Spur Neck Knife ($19.95), designed by famous hunter and award-winning knifemaker Russ Kommer. The unique, sharp look was inspired by a rooster’s spurs and allows for easy pressure to be applied to its edge. All in all these are handy knives that can replace your home’s KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 box-cutter or stand the test of time in the wilderness. For knives with more pizzazz, try Browning’s Safari Prism line. The Zebra print (shown) is a stylish folder for only $19.95, and the Prism line also features a giraffe and leopard print, as well as an urban, chic twist. Browning encourages women to step outside the box, going for the “colorful and convenient,” rather than the simple or boring. knivesillustrated.com KI-BG3-LADIES_v2.qxp 10/10/12 12:32 AM KI’s Conversation With Family Traditions Star Haley Heath “I’m proud of this line from Buck, because it’s created by women, for women,” says Heath of the rigorous four-month process it took to perfect the designs. I had women in mind, particularly those who love the outdoors. I had the opportunity to design them, pick the right-size blades and the right shape for small hands while keeping safety in mind.” “I created a product that I can use, because in the outdoors, you never know what you’re going to come across,” Heath explains. “I’ve always loved Buck products; they were just a little too big for my hand, and now I have something that suits me. They’re all made from a durable steel, and I picked colors that are universal for anyone.” Heath, a fifth-generation outdoors person known for shooting her first deer at the ripe age of six, believes it’s important to take your kids out with you and make the outdoors not just female-friendly but fun for the whole family. “It’s important to share family traditions with your kids, and hunting is a part of our heritage. I don’t just do it for the [television show]; that’s what I live for. Some of the best moments I’ve had with my kids are away from the video games and TV—outdoors, [where] we can spend quality time together.” She also adds that it’s important to always take into account “safety first,” as her dad raised her to do. Haley believes that women are encouraged now more than ever to get out there, because there are now products specifically targeting the female audience. “In the future, I will continue to do the show and hope to create more lines of new and improved knives.” knivesillustrated.com Page 27 KI-BG3-REALITY_v2.qxp 10/10/12 12:37 AM Page 28 SERIOUS STARPOWER Knife Lines By Some Familiar Faces | By Karen Wilhelmsen he survivor genre has now claimed its place as a staple in the land of reality TV. With shows like “Survivorman,” “Dual Survivor” and “Man vs. Wild” invading the Discovery’s Channel’s day-to-day lineup, you’re bound to stumble upon one of these survival shows as you’re channel surfing. And what’s every survivor’s greatest tool in the great outdoors? You guessed it, a knife. That’s exactly why many hit reality, survivor TV stars are teaming up with knife industry’s biggest names to create knife lines their fans can use to follow in the gritty footsteps of their favorite reality stars. Since these guys and gals have so much experience with outdoor survival needs, they are able to take their expertise and translate that into knockouts that won’t disappoint. Here, we’ll take a look at some exclusive lines by some big names like Bear Grylls, Les Stroud, Haley Heath and more. And, meet the stars’ newest costars—their knives. They might even steal the show. T The Jungle Warrior Les Stroud is fearless, and so are his knives. PHOTOS BY LAURA BOMBIER ove all the survival shows on TV? Well, you have Les Stroud to thank for that, the originator of the survival genre and the “Survivorman” himself. If you’ve wondered just how much “reality” goes into the show, fans will be happy to know that Stroud is the real deal. He’s the only TV personality to produce, write, film and star in his own survival show, and the results are nothing short of impressive, or entertaining, as he puts his life on the line. “I am happy that excitement for the skills has built up because of the various [survival] shows,” says Stroud. “It’s got people wanting to go outside, it’s got people wanting to take courses, it’s got people touching the earth again, and that’s an important thing to me. I think it’s a beautiful thing that this little tiny idea for ‘Survivorman’ has expanded into an entire genre of shows specifically dealing with survival and wilderness skills.” L 28 KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 knivesillustrated.com KI-BG3-REALITY_v2.qxp 10/10/12 12:37 AM Page 29 CAMILLUS LES STROUD SK DESERT FOLDING KNIFE CAMILLUS LES STROUD SK ARCTIC FIXED SPORT KNIFE And with the genre, has come an increase in survival knives available for fans to check out. I had the opportunity to design them, pick the rightsize blades and the right shape for small hands.” Heath, who spent four months on designing the prototypes has always been a fan of Buck Knives, and created a line she’s proud of. No more using knives designed for larger hands, making her that much more comfortable pursuing the sport. “I created a product that I can use, because in the outdoors, you never know what you’re going to come across … and now, I have something that suits me,” she says. Text and Photos by Abe Elias The Columbia River M.A.K-1 is a heavy-duty professional rescue tool designed by fireman James McGowan. CRKT, 18348 SW 126th Place, Tualatin, OR 97062 www.crkt.com, 503-685-5015 hen the subject turns to rescue knives, we most often think of military and law enforcement personnel, as well as first responders and firefighters, but anyone could potentially need a rescue knife. I personally keep two rescue knives in my truck, one on the driver’s side and the other on the passenger’s side. In the case of an emergency, a rescue tool will be available to everyone in the front of the cab. W URBAN RESCUE Here we’re looking at knives targeted toward general urban rescue. The models I have chosen are the SOG Flash Rescue (orange), Gerber’s Hinderer Rescue, CRK&T M.A.K.-1 and Victorinox`s Rescue Tool. Although this by no means covers all of the dif- ferent models currently available, this gives a good overall view of the various features. SOG FLASH The SOG Flash is an assisted opener, a tried and proven pattern modified to make a rescue knife. Why reinvent the wheel when it just needs different tires? The blade design on the Flash is a hollow-ground hawksbill profile that has a partially serrated edge with the serration towards the rear of the blade. The Flash has a rounded tip to the blade, which will allow the blade to be Rick Hinderer is an EMT when he’s not designing or making knives. Many of the rescue features on the Gerber rescue knife come from his actual experience. GERBER KNIVES 14200 SW 72nd Ave. Portland, OR 97224 www.gerbergear.com 800-950-6161 COLUMBIA KNIFE AND TOOL MODEL: M.A.K.-1 OVERALL: 10 inches BLADE: 4.875 inches STEEL: Stainless 2CR13 HANDLE: Black or orange SUGGESTED RETAIL: $99.99 COMMENTS: Designed by firefighter James McGowan to handle the rigors of emergency extractions and rescues that professionals are faced with. GERBER KNIVES MODEL: Hinderer Rescue OVERALL: 8.5 inches BLADE: 3.5 inches STEEL: Stainless blade and strap cutter HANDLE: Red fiberglass-reinforced nylon SUGGESTED RETAIL: $100 Comments: It comes with a full assortment of tool bits that work off an oxygen tank wrench slot, which makes it useful as a rescue knife or as a tool when you need a little more. 38 KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 knivesillustrated.com KI-BG3-RESCUE_v2.qxp 10/10/12 1:02 AM Page 39 (Left) The CRKT M.A.K-1’s large blade can be used to pry or chop, as in this move to kill the power to the car’s electric system to avoid a short that might start a fire. (Center) Proper technique in using a breaker is to strike the corner of a window to prevent the chance of any bounce back from the glass. Shown here is the Gerber Hinderer. (Right) The serrations on the SOG Rescue Flash can make short work of a stuck seat belt. used in tight quarters with less risk of injury. To increase visibility, SOG uses orange glass-reinforced nylon that has multiple textured surfaces allowing for a solid purchase with gloved or wet hands. A drawback for me is that the thumb stud is a bit difficult to engage with gloves, depending on how bulky the gloves are. Another is that they did not incorporate a glass breaker of any sort. Among the positives for the knife, it’s one of the few with a combination blade design that you could actually use for everyday carry. GERBER HINDERER RESCUE As is common with a number of rescue products, Gerber has decided to put together a tool package so the knife comes with a pouch sheath. The knife itself has a drop-point hollow-ground profiled blade with blunt tip and a partially serrated edge. Handle material for the Hinderer is red textured-glass reinforced nylon. The over-sized thumb knivesillustrated.com stud aids in opening the blade even with gloves on, and they have incorporated a fold-out belt cutter at the rear of the knife. On the back of the knife is a steel protrusion that has a glass breaker mounted on it. Machined into the scales is an oxygen tank wrench. Accompanying the knife in its pouch sheath is a bit set with extension handle. The extension handle seems to be modeled after an Allen wrench design with a short end for gaining torque and a long end for fast running of screws. Overall it’s a solidly built package with good weight; important in a tool you will handle with gloves on. Gerber provides enough features to make this a versatile rescue tool. CRKT M.A.K.-1 CRKT has a fixed-blade rescue knife designed by Canadian firefighter James McGowan. McGowan`s design is particularly targeted at the duties of a firefighter, but I can see it being a handy tool to carry in a vehicle. The only thing worse than something going wrong is not being prepared when it does. The knives here will help in that preparedness. Called the Multiple Access Knife (M.A.K.-1 for short), one of the highpoint features is that the main blade is made for heavy cutting and prying duties. Finally, a knife that wants to be called a sharpened pry bar. Other features include dual glass breakers. One is a tipped striking tool and the other is a groove used for twist breaking. Twist breaking is done by inserting the edge of the window into the groove and leveraging against the window until it breaks. The benefit of breaking a window by leveraging is that KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 3 9 KI-BG3-RESCUE_v2.qxp 10/10/12 1:02 AM Page 40 Left to right: CRKT M.A.K.-1, SOG Flash Rescue, Victorinox Rescue Tool and Gerber Hinderer Rescue. when striking a window, glass can go flying all over the occupants of the vehicle. With leveraging, the glass falls down in a sheet. At the back of the breaking groove is an 8mm wrench used for GM side-mount battery terminals. As explained to me by McGowan, it’s important to disconnect the electrical systems in a car to prevent ignition due to a shortage in the wire system. The solid, durable construction of the knife is what gives it its greatest utility for extradition. Along with the main blade, they provide a belt-cutting knife that comes with two tapered points to be used as standard or Phillips screwdrivers. The knife is carried in a dualpouch sheath. A small utility pouch carries the belt cutter. VICTORINOX’S RESCUE TOOL Like any other Victorinox model they 40 have included many tools. In fact, it’s a veritable tool chest. So let me try to run down the main features. The main blade is a one-handed opening comboedge drop point, which opens by using an oversized thumb hole. Unlike the other Victorinox blades, this one has the serrations on the front part of the edge, allowing the user to get aggressive cutting down without having to insert the blade all of the way to the back. Other tools on the knife include glass breaker, flat-head screwdriver with bottle opener and wire stripper, strap cutter with safety tip, awl and Phillips screwdriver. A WINDSHIELD SAW The most interesting feature is the windshield saw. First, open a hole in the windshield and then go to town with the saw. It requires some force, but it works like mad! The use of fluorescent KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 glow in the dark scales makes the tool visible and easy to find in a hurry. The only thing I found to be a bit troublesome with the Victorinox Rescue Tool was the pouch. While the pouch does holds the tool, the belt loop is very wide and you will tend to have travel of the sheath itself before you hit the bottom of the loop and are able to get out the knife. This was a fun article to do. I went down to the local testing yard and busted up a bunch of glass and cut up a lot of seatbelt material. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take pictures at the time of actual testing since I was doing the testing, and I was not allowed to include any of the emergency personnel in the pictures. The only thing worse than something going wrong is not being prepared when it does. The knives here will help in that preparedness. In early childhood, my attention was drawn to bushcraft through scouting, when bushcraft was referred to as camp or woodcraft. In the 1990s, I started teaching these skills to various groups, and even then one of the key topics was the type of knives that should be used. With bushcraft at its current level of popularity, knives are an even hotter topic. There will always be preferences as to what is the best for anything, and my opinion in selecting these knives is based on years of practicing and instructing bushcraft. I have brought together five bushcraft knives that represent the major themes for this most valued tool. Let’s look at them. B ONTARIO BLACKBIRD SK-5 RESEMBLES THE DADLEY Ontario’s Blackbird SK-5 a blend of From left to right, the Mora High Q, Helle Harding, OKC SK-5, Grohmann #4 survival knife and Spyderco Bushcraft. modern materials and a style reminiscent of the old butcher knives that were carried by the mountain men and pioneers that opened up the West. The SK-5’s spear-tip point resembles that style of a Green River Dadley style, or some would say a Horace Kephart-style knife. MODERN ELEMENTS The Blackbird SK-5 is a full, flatgrind very typical of the butcher-style knives that early American adventurers carried and used as trade items with the Native Americans during the fur trading era. At the same time, it holds modern elements that are used to HELLE NORWAY MODEL: Harding OVERALL: 8.2 inches BLADE: 3.9 inches STEEL: Triple-laminated stainless steel HANDLE: 4.3-inch stacked wood SUGGESTED RETAIL: $129 COMMENTS: Scandi ground blade is carried in a Scandinavian-style sheath with a keeper flap for secure carry. SPYDERCO, 820 Spyderco Co Way, Golden, CO 80403-8053, www.spyderco.com, 800-525-7770 update the knife’s utility and durability. Ontario uses handle materials such as linen micarta and mechanical fasteners on the scales. Another departure from traditional materials such as carbon steel, Ontario has chosen instead to go with a 154cm stainless steel. The SK-5 has great utility and is a good blend of modern materials and traditional style to represent old frontier knives. CANADIAN CONTRIBUTION TO THE MIX The Grohmann model #4 Survival knife is made in Nova Scotia, Canada. This knife takes a major part of its design cues from the Grohmann #3 model, also known as the Russell belt knife. Many companies have copied the original design, and this pattern has remained popular with outdoorsmen. Style and design set this knife off from the rest of the crowd Grohmann’s #4 is larger than the #3 and features a high flat grind and is available in 4110 stainless steel or other steels upon request. Grohmann’s #4 takes elements like the organic flow of the #3s profile and up-swept cutting edge, and translates them into a hardier large version with added features of its own. The blade is wider with a high flat grind that stacks more material behind the cutting edge. You can also get a full flat grind on the knife. The Model #4 features a larger overall blade and handle. The larger handle helps manipulate the blade while wearing glove during cold weather excursions. Increasing the blade length obviously extends the length of the cutting edge, while the overall size increases add to the heft of the knife for pushing through materials and chopping with wrist snap cuts. Grohmann’s #4 gives us the utility of the #3 model with some subtle changes and the addition of weight to take it into a fuller-sized all-around knife great for making traps and cleaning large game. MORA-BANG FOR THE BUCK One of the knives that started the Scandinavian grind craze on this side of the pond is the Mora. In fact, I’ve chosen the Mora High Q for my bushcraft knife. Before Mora was well known, I was an Internet dealer of these blades. The most common versions at that time were the red-handled carving models and the plastic injection molded 760s. The plastic injection molded 740s had an overlay rubber grip. Over time, the two last remaining companies that produced these knives, Frosts and Erikson, joined forces. Since the merger, the WHAT IS BUSHCRAFT? . Bushcraft is another word for wilderness and survival skills. Interest began in parts of the UK, and was catapulted into popularity with books and a television show by survival expert Ray Mears. Bushcraft emphasizes utilizing the natural surroundings for food, shelter and, in the case of building your own raft or canoe, transportation. knivesillustrated.com KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 5 3 KI-BG3-BUSHCRAFT.qxp 10/10/12 1:20 AM Page 54 prices of the knives have gone up and they have produced some models specific to survival. The good old standard of the 740 model is alive and well in the High Q. SCANDINAVIAN GRIND A Scandinavian grind is aggressive when it comes to woodworking, and thus it has become very popular in bushcraft knives because a great deal of bushcraft work involves carving. One of the common drawbacks of the Mora knives in the beginning were the sheaths. People would sometimes pay more than three times the value of the knife to get a custom sheath. For the money, though, these are great knives, and as for the common theme behind prepping, at these prices we can stash a bucket load around the place as a back blade in your bug-out bags or car kits. HELLE I would be remiss in my coverage of bushcraft knives if I didn’t include one company that embodies utility along with the warmth of old world Scandinavian craftsmanship. Helle offers many models that not only are great users but have a level of craftsmanship representative of the traditional Scandinavian knife works. One such model, which makes a great midsize user, is the Harding. The Harding is a stick tang construction so you get to see a traditional stacked-handle presentation work. Because of the stick tang construction, the comfortable handle affords complete contouring. GROHMANN KNIVES MODEL: #4 survival knife OVERALL: 10 5/16-inch BLADE: 5 1/2-inch STEEL: 4110 stainless steel HANDLE: 4 13/16-inch rosewood SUGGESTED RETAIL: $119 COMMENT: Grohmann also provides a version of this model with a gut hook. GROHMANN KNIVES, P.O. Box 40, 116 Water St., Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada, B0K 1H0 www.grohmannknives.com, 888-7KNIVES SPYDERCO Spyderco launched their bushcraft design with the help of the Bushcraft.Uk forum, which basically worked up a close copy of the famous Ray Mears Woodlore. Ray Mears hosted a survival show in England and is usually credited with launching the modern bushcraft trend. The design itself uses a traditional Scandi grind on a spear-tip blade with black G10 handles. It is full tang construction and, like the SK-5, these elements subtly blend traditional with modern. One of the outstanding features is the contoured handle, designed to be roomy and give the user a great deal of control while helping to prevent strain or fatigue. Weight wise, it has good presence in hand without being too heavy. The aggressive tip is great for drilling out holes like in starting a fireboard, or carving out a spoon or bowl. A unique feature of the knife is that it comes in a pancake divers-style sheath, which allows for right- or left-hand carry. Spyderco has put together a hard-working package for those fans of Spyderco knives and bushcraft. KNIVES FOR EVERY BUSHCRAFT SCHOOL All five knives give us a representation of the different styles and schools of bushcraft knives out there and some of the historical patterns that influenced where we are today in the bushcraft offerings being made. From here out, all we have to do is play around with different knives and see what suits are styles of using a knife best. I hope we all get in a little dirt time. Therefore, I always keep my eye out for the perfect duty knife to carry when I go into harm’s way. For the last 15 years or so, there have been many quality duty knives produced by great American manufacturers, some reaching elite status. So if you’re the warrior type who loves to work in special operations, high-risk entry, law enforcement or the military, here are the five best tactical folding knives, plus a couple of special purpose recommendations worth checking out. I believe that they will support your efforts in stemming the tide of evil. W 40 YEARS OF KNOWLEDGE I’ve been in law enforcement for 40plus years, including state police, municipal police and railway police. I’ve also been an international police advisor and United Nations police officer. During my service I’ve cultivated an appreciation for a quality pocketknife. As a peace officer, my first duty-type knife was a Buck three-pin single-lock back blade, which I still own. Since then I’ve carried many different folding knives, including a 6-inch Italian switchblade that fit perfectly in my uniform shirt pocket next to my note pad. THE ZERO TOLERANCE 0301—SHARPER THAN THE LAW SHOULD ALLOW The Zero Tolerance Ranger Green folder 0301 and 0301ST are tactical folders that I will place in the large category with an oak leaf cluster and a “C” for coolness. I examined the ZT 0301ST and carried it around for a few days. I found it to be an excellent product made of the finest material by craftsmen who live, work and create in the USA. A division of the Kershaw or KAI USA Ltd., Zero Tolerance has a line of superb tactical folding knives. The Ranger Green folder has a stainless steel 3 3/4-inch blade made of S30V and sports tungsten with DLC coating and very cool tiger stripes. The serration on the Zero Tolerance is so sharp that it can be used to cut your way out of a jammed-up seatbelt or a dirtbag trying to take your weapon. The blade is deployed by the SpeedSafe assisted-opening system, which I found functional and not hard to activate, like some assisted-opening knives can be. The handle on the 0301ST is 3D-machined G-10 with a titanium back, making this knife surprisingly light for its size. Either the 0301 or 0301ST is a great choice for serious warriors. The 0301’s MSRP is $340. BRED FOR BATTLE—THE TOPS ZQT MAGNUM When I talk about tactical knives with friends and warriors, the name The Zero Tolerance Ranger Green folder 0301ST is one excellent knife. It not only looks cool, it’s functional. If you’re serious about your tactical folder selection, check out this knife before you buy. 60 KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 knivesillustrated.com 10/10/12 (TOP) If you have a bear paw for a hand and are looking for a manly tactical folding knife, the Italian-made TOPS CQT Magnum 711 is one knife that you should check out. It truly is an excellent knife. 1:34 AM Page 61 PHOTO BY CHIEF JIM DAILY KI-BG3-CLINT.qxp TOPS always comes up. There’s a good reason for this. TOPS makes some of the finest quality tactical knives in the world and at what I consider to be a reasonable price. You can pay more but you just can’t buy better. For you SWAT and PSD (Personal Security Detail) officers or warriors going into the thick of bad guy country, the TOPS CQT Magnum tactical folder should be on your belt or battle rattle. The CQT Magnum is one handful of a knife and should make you warriors with bear paws for hands very happy. As I handled the CQT Magnum my mind went back to my time in Iraq as a police advisor. I could have used this knife on my battle rattle while riding around in a Humvee or a white RPGmagnet Chevy Suburban. (left) When TOPS commissioned this knife, they were thinking about that portion of the market where men and women of action reside—warriors who protect and serve their community or serve in faraway places where the air sometimes fills with copper-jacketed dirt nap pills. The TOPS CQT Magnum 711 is bred for battle with its 4 1/2-inch tanto blade made of N690Co/cobalt vanadium steel at an RC of 58-60. The handle for this brute is made of durable G-10 and can be carried on the pocket clip or in the ballistic nylon MOLLE carrying system. This bad boy weighs in at 9.4 ounces, which is not bad for a knife of this size. I recommend it for you hard chargers and life takers. The MSRP for the TOPS CQT magnum 711 is $229. SOG SPEC-ELITE II AUTO— THE PERFECT TACTICAL AUTO SOG has the perfect tactical auto for you automatic knife lovers who have to have an auto knife to go with your auto M-4 and Glock pistol. The SOG SpecElite II Auto is a very impressive knife. I would place this knife in the medium to large category, but with a size and weight that would accommodate most potential users. In checking out the SOG Spec-Elite II auto, the apparent quality of workmanship and detail to design was impressive. Hang on when you release the 4-inch razor-sharp blade as it comes out a-whooping and aspurring. Those not ready for the blade action may find the AUS-8 steel blade sticking in something that they did not intend. The SOG Spec-Elite II Auto has a 4-inch AUS-8 steel blade with HRC 57-58 hardness and an overall open length of 8.9 inches. You can tote your Spec-elite II auto in your front pocket by way of the reversible pocket clip, which I found to be functional and the right size. If you’re one of the lucky people who can possess an auto folding knife, you can expect to pay MSRP at $205, which is a good price for the quality that you receive. BENCHMADE BEDLAM—WATCH OUT, CLOWNS Benchmade has the largest quality selection of US-made knives in the tactical auto category. The Benchmade Bedlam 8600 is one of those finely designed and manufactured knives that you’ve always wanted to own. Those in law enforcement can expect the Bedlam to serve well for many years and be a good memento in retirement. I believe Benchmade has named this particular knife well. I can envision an officer on patrol making a traffic stop. The officer walks up to the driver’s window and stops. All doors fly open and bad guys come out like clowns out of a mini-car at the circus. As the clowns try to disarm the officer, the Bedlam is deployed. True to its name, it does indeed cause bedlam, and adds chaos and pandemonium to their little circus clown world. (The Bedlam I received for evaluation was put through its paces without any harm to any clowns.) This auto knifes’ blade is catapulted into action by the downward pull of the Auto-Axis mechanism. Release this mechanism and the blade is locked open as secure as secure can get. Pull down on the mechanism again and the blade is unlocked. It can be manually closed or, with practice, flipped shut. Be careful not to lose control on flipping the blade to the closed position as you can cause possible injury to yourself or others. The Bedlam had a 3.95-inch partially serrated blade with an overall length of 9.76 inches and a closed length of 5.76 inches. This very cool knife weighs in at 7.3 ounces. The Bedlam blade is made of 154CM stainless steel with a RC hardness of 58-60. I secured the Bedlam in my front jeans pocket by way of the tip-up pocket clip that can be removed and placed on the other side for creative lefty warriors. I love the name and the Bedlam itself. The MSRP is $280, but with some keyboard sweat you can find one for a bit less. KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 Conversations about automatic knives will usually drift to the SOG line. The auto/manual knife is appropriately called “Volcan.” When I received my sample it took a minute or two to figure out how to open this knife with its auto function. Once I had this mastered, I could open the knife by the auto function or the manual function. In fact, this was so much fun that I kept doing it for some time and I never had one hiccup. Now I’m no mechanical engineer and I was left wondering how this works. The manual opening function in every way is just like any other liner-locking tactical folder. Even at close inspection, you can’t tell that this is anything other than a manual knife. It’s kind of like the Roy Rogers trick knife I had in my youth. Not only is the Volcan a fun knife, it’s The Benchmade Bedlam in auto or manual versions is one of my personal picks for a selfvery well made and stands up to some defense duty knife. The officer has the option to open the knife manually when deploying it as a tool. In those times when the fight over your sidearm turns into a hair-pulling, eyegouging, teeth-gnashing death match, the Volcan blade can be deployed on the offending dirtbag whose last word will be “cool.” I can tell you this… I love this knife. I met Jim when I was a rookie cop in Newton. When he was just 19 years old, Jim suffered an accident while working for the Santa Fe Railroad, which caused him to be confined to a wheelchair. Jim always wanted to be a cop and wasn’t going to be slowed down by his wheelchair. He joined the Great Bend, Kansas, Police Department as a dispatcher and was later promoted to officer training. A couple of years later, Jim graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center as a full-time officer. Not one to be held back, Jim served as Sheriff of Barton County, Kansas, for 14 years. He holds many professional law enforcement association titles from sergeant of arms to president. After leaving office, Jim was appointed to the chief of police position in Newton, where he serves today with some 10-plus years to his credit. Chief Jim Daily is a budding photographer and has taken many of the professional photographs contain in this article. His twin brother John Daily is pictured proudly holding his Zero Tolerance 0301. 64 KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 DON’T FORGET THE MULTI-TOOL For an excellent duty tool/knife with extremely sharp serrated blade and standard blade, you have to go no further than the Leatherman Wave. I can say from my hard use of my Wave in Iraq and in the USA as a police officer that, in my opinion, the Wave cannot be matched by any other multi-tool. There are several excellent American multi-tools on the market, but, to me, the best engineered and duty functional on the market is the Wave. My Wave goes with me every time I leave town or suit up to go play with the bad guys. The Wave is 4 inches closed, weighs in at 8.5 ounces, sports 17 tools and comes with a 25-0year warranty. What else can I say but go out and buy one at the MSRP of $104. The Wave test sample I received is now serving in Afghanistan on the battle rattle of Major Steve Hulse. SOMETHING EXTRA FOR THE CHIEFS Last, but by no means the least, Famars USA has the perfect auto knife for chief of police warriors who fight the good fight from their desks. The four USA-made models—Prima Edizione, Lama, Piccolo and Medio— knivesillustrated.com KI-BG3-CLINT.qxp 10/10/12 1:34 AM Page 65 are perfect for police chiefs who appreciate the finer things in life and demand excellence from their officers and equipment. I will describe these knives as gentlemen’s knives because of the vest pocket size and high quality of craftsmanship. The Famars name is from Italy where they make the finest double-barrel shotguns and rifles, which, with their world-famous engraving, can run as high as $200,000. The Famars knife line is less expensive, but made with the same quality and craftsmanship as the $200,000 shotgun. I wonder if the city council will approve the Famars’ Avantis 12-gauge side-by-side shotgun for duty use? PICCOLO PUT TO USE Famars Piccolo is so light and well designed that I would forget that I even had it in my pocket. The Piccolo that I evaluated had two cutting blades—a tanto and a modified clip point—both of which were auto opening. Both 2.1-inch blades came ripping out when released by depressing the button. To close, depress the button again. My sample’s handle sported inlaid elephant hide and gave the Tiny Titan some gripping power. Famars has the ability to customize your Tiny Titan with six blade designs including Damascus. The Piccolo has 13 exotic skin inlay, exotic wood and colored aluminum handles. These highend gentlemen’s knives start at $299, with custom scales and gold inlay at the top end. The pictured Piccolo with the exotic elephant inlay retails for $499. If you’re headed into danger and need a good knife for cutting one thing or another, or you need backup while wrangling those wild rookies, the knives in this article will fill the bill for warriors and law enforcement professionals. Victory View Way, Boise, ID 83709, www.chrisreeve.com 208-375-0367 GERBER LHR KNIFE att Larsen, William Harsey and Chris Reeve developed the Larsen Harsey Reeve (LHR) fixed blade knife. These three men are experts in knife design and use. The collective genius of Larsen’s field experience and research, coupled with the metallurgical wizardry of Harsey and Reeve, has possibly created the next generation of real combat knives for folks who go into “harm’s way.” Matt Larsen is the creator of the US Army's hand-to-hand combat system. As a warrior, he served as an infantryman in the US Marine Corps and US Army 75th Ranger Regiment for more than 22 years, including several combat deployments. William W. “Bill” Harsey learned the value of sharp steel as a logger before graduating from the University of Oregon with a degree in design. He used his experiences to make knives for outdoor and military uses. Chris Reeve is an American knife- M 70 maker and the developer of the frame lock in use on thousands of today’s knives. He owns and operates Chris Reeve Knives, Inc., a company made up of skilled, motivated craftsmen and machinists who produce Reeve's unique, high-function designs. The design of the LHR was based upon the lessons learned through more than 900 real-life, documented experiences in close-quarter combat with firearms, knifes and hand-to-hand. These included incidents in which several US soldiers were stabbed with their own knives in part because there were no weapon retention sheaths. Knives needed to be difficult for an enemy to retrieve, and should be strapped to the soldier’s kit so they are considered sidearms. What makes this knife additionally special is that the sheath is unique and effective in its method of retention with its built-in, friction-release thumb lock. The Gerber website indicates the knife costs $99.99. Victory View Way Boise, ID 83709 www.chrisreeve.com 208-375-0367 NO. 2 THE PACIFIC KNIFE he Pacific is a fixed-blade tactical knife that went into production in 2007 and is still being made. It’s the civilian version of the 1st Group knife, which was designed by award-winning knifemaker Bill Harsey. It was Harsey who also designed the Neil Roberts Warrior knife, a knife honoring Petty Officer Neil Roberts, the first Navy SEAL killed in combat in Afghanistan. Chris Reeve Knives (CRK) manufactures both the Pacific and the Neil Roberts Warrior knife. The 1st Group knife was designed and manufactured at the request of the US Army Special Forces 1st Group to commemorate their 50th Anniversary. And because their theater of operations is in Asia and the Pacific, the name “Pacific” was chosen for this civilian version. Over the years, Reeve has developed a way to hollow grind a clip point, such as on the Pacific, to give the point its evident strength. This involves a three- T knivesillustrated.com dimensional twist to grind in the design that goes to the blade’s point. It works well, resulting in a solid, strong point. As Reeve says, there’s a difference between what looks cool and what works. The knife’s S30V steel composition is carbon, chromium, vanadium and molybdenum. Crucible Materials Corporation approached Reeve to use their vanadium steel (the more vanadium, the more difficult to machine and polish). Instead, Crucible and Reeve collaborated to develop an alloy that provided the desired results in corrosion resistance and toughness, and was suitable for knives. Most CRK knives are at 58-59 Rockwell Hardness (RC), which bends a little; a higher RC like RC 60 tends to chip. The exceptions are tactical fixed-blade knives, including the Pacific, which are made a bit softer at 55-57 RC. Reeve would rather have his knives in occasional need of sharpening than have them chip. Improvement in the knife steel market comes in little steps; the next generation is S35VN steel, a knife steel that didn’t come to market until late in 2009. The Chris Reeve Knives website indicates the knife costs $325. NO. 3 THE MARC LEE GLORY KNIFE n August 2, 2006, the first American Navy SEAL was killed in action in Iraq. His name was Marc Lee, a name that means “Mighty Warrior.” He lived up to his name that day by standing out in the direct line of fire three different times to defend his fellow SEALS. Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. introduced this memorial knife in honor of this SEAL; it is called the Marc Lee Glory Knife (Model Number 150 BKSN). Eddie Killian, an independent knife designer, designed this knife. Killian first designed the blade and handle separately on graph paper. Then he made a Plexiglas model and from that, a steel prototype. While Killian has a computer with computer aided design (CAD) software, he did not use it in this case. However, he said that if he had known the project would have turned out so big, he would have used his CAD to make things easier for Benchmade. From there, Benchmade picked up the O KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 7 1 KI-BG3-WEISS.qxp 10/10/12 1:47 AM Page 72 project. According to Killian, the knife is true to his original design. With combat knives and Navy looks in mind, the knife has a re-curved blade. The idea was to carry on a Navy theme since so many ship aspects have curves: propeller blades, anchors and traditional helms wheels. The re-curved blade has drop-point geometry, meaning that it has more of a cutting edge than other blade styles. Drop-point blades are associated with hunting and survival knives. Its re-curve blade is weight forward, thicker in the front. It’s designed as a tool for multitasking—chopping, slicing, prying and even digging. A finger placement indentation (finger groove) adjacent to the cutting edge of the blade in front of the handle allows for choking up on the blade for detail work. Just NO. 4 BLACKHAWK TACTICAL DEFENSE RAZORBACK TROCAR ell-known writer and author Massad Ayoob, who is also the director of the Lethal Force Institute and a police captain with the Grantham, New Hampshire, Police Department designed the original Defense Razorback Trocar Knife. In addition, when the grooved butt is used for hammering or breaking glass or ice, this finger indentation enhances the ice-pick grip. There are grooved notches for thumb control (jimping) on a thumb rise where the top of the blade meets the handle for better gripping and to brake the user’s thumb from slipping forward. This allows the user to grip the blade correctly, controlling where it goes. The blade steel is 154CM, an American-made, premium-grade stainless steel originally developed for indus- trial applications. It offers corrosion resistance, toughness and edge quality. The blade is made with a flat grind. The swedge or false edge on the top of the blade is common to combat knives. Made in the USA, Benchmade will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each knife to a foundation being established in Marc Lee’s honor. The Plain Edge/ BK1 Coated Blade Chris Lee Glory Knife is available on back order from Benchmade for $360, and a limited edition collectible, commemorative and combat-ready knife, including a lockable presentation box, is available for $1,000. He felt that he wanted a very fast access, comfortable-to-wear-24/7, concealed-carry “personal knife,” with emphasis on defensive capability. According to Ayoob, he compared his small fixed-blade design to tactical folders when he designed this knife. He found that there were a lot of good folders. However, he felt that the fixed blade is simply much faster to deploy in a reactive defense situation. “The draw is the slash if you know what you’re doing with it,” he says. (See Ayoob’s demonstration in Mike Janich’s film from Paladin Press, “Masters of Defense”). As to the knife’s size, remember concealability was a priority; his Razor Trocar is something of an “uber-steak knife,” and a steak knife is designed for the effortless and efficient cutting of meat. One’s opponent is made of… meat. Of interest is that the Razorback personal carry knife was designed with the input of forensic pathologists and medical examiners. It was called the Razorback because the handle dropped at an angle below the blade, like a straight razor; this was a design Ayoob continued and amplified in the Spyderco C60. He wanted the blade to be in line with the long bones of the forearm, to amplify both slashing and stabbing force. The medical examiners taught him that the wider the spine of the knife, the more the tissue would separate when pierced, promoting hemorrhage and more rapid debilitation. The fact that the wound stayed open longer and wider is what turned out to make it work so well in the Trocar puncturing function. Ayoob was very gratified when he learned that his Razorback personal carry knife had become the knife of choice for many tactical medics who used it for everything from inserting chest tubes to performing amputations. It was designed to take lives yet it also saves lives, and he is pleased with the outcome. Ayoob's knife was described in a reissue of the Masters of Defense as a state-of-the-art expression of a traditional Japanese tanto. In this regard, he thinks the tanto shape agrees with his concept of a very compact and concealable fixed-blade knife that could be drawn with maximum speed from a Kydex concealment sheath, since the fastest draws are point down. Blackhawk advertises the Tactical Defense Razorback Trocar as featuring a Teflon-coated AUS8A stainless steel blade with a zero-ground, scalpel-sharp tip, and depth index grooves for precise control of the knife during tactical medical procedures. Ayoob says he likes the Teflon because it reduces friction in every respect and makes cleaning easier; the sharper tip is more efficient for obvious reasons; and he considers the depth index grooves a brilliant addition, something he wishes that he could take credit for. However, he defers to Michael Janich on that one since he was in charge at Blackhawk Knives when that addition took place. Blackhawk indicates that the knife costs as low as $74.99. 74 NO. 5 HOGUE-ELISHEWITZ EX-FO1 OVERALL: 12 1/2 inches BLADE: 7 inches STEEL: A2 HANDLES: G-MASCUS WEIGHT: 12 1/2 ounces SUGGESTED RETAIL: $250 HOGUE, INC. P. O. Box 1138 Paso Robles, CA 93447 www.hogueknives.com 800-438-4747 ogue, Inc. worked with custom knifemaker Allen Elishewitz to combine art, design and joint manufacturing expertise to deliver a fresh, new and innovative approach to sporting cutlery. Successful knife designers usually come from one of three backgrounds: custom knifemaker, martial arts or the military. Elishewitz, the designer of the Hogue Elishewitz EX-F01, is rather unique in that he has a background in all three. Elishewitz started martial arts when he was 10, and has trained in Thailand, Taiwan, Greece, and the United States. He has studied more than a dozen different styles including boxing, karate, kali and Thai boxing. He joined the Marine Corps after high school where his first military occupational specialty (MOS) was as a Naval/Artillery Call for Fire Scout; he was also a recon Marine. Elishewitz has been self-employed solely in the knifemaking business for more than 20 years. During this time he has made a lot of different fighting knives, from fixed blades to folders, testing them to see which would perform best. By doing so, he was able to develop a foundation and an understanding of what a true military/defense knife should be. Elishewitz says that as a knifemaker, tactical and defensive knives are what define him and are a natural extension of his personality. He believes that his past experiences gave him the knowledge and the understanding of what a knife needs to possess in order to perform best in a self defense or military application. According to Elishewitz, there are three characteristics of the ElishewitzHogue EX-F01 that make it unique and special in a world of so many tactical knife choices. “Everything on the EX-F01 was thought out and taken into consideration during the design and manufacturing process,” he says. “From the handle and blade to the sheath, everything was designed to give the user a complete package.” According to Hogue, the handle is made of a new type of G10 (or G-10). G10 is a high-pressure, thermoset, plastic laminate consisting of multiple layers of woven fiberglass mesh cloth impregnated with an epoxy resin binder. It can be produced with many layers of the same color, or different colors to achieve a specific cosmetic look. Typical G10 is made of only flat layers. This method allows for different patterns within the colored material, producing a unique look. The new G-Mascus takes on a look similar to Damascus steel, which is why they named it “G-Mascus.” The blade is 1/4-inch thick and made of A2 tool steel (five-percent chromium medium alloy cold work tool steel) with a KG 2400 series GUN-KOTE (by reputation this offers excellent abrasion resistance and corrosion protection), and is heat-treated. The blade’s Rockwell Hardness (RC) is 57-59. The blade is also cryogenically treated as part of the tempering processes. The sheath is black Milspec ballistic nylon with snaps and an optional front pouch, is M.O.L.L.E. compatible, and has multiple belt mounting options. Hogue Inc. indicates the knife costs $250. A drop point and enough belly for skinning makes the Nyala useful in a multitude of applications. The integral handle and blade is sturdy and practical. NO. 6 KERSHAW ZERO TOLERANCE MILITARY KNIFE here’s a certain eye appeal and sharpness to the all-black, fixed blade Kershaw Zero Tolerance Military Knife 0100. It’s too late to have its image carved into a Roman victory column, but just maybe it should be. According to Kai USA, Ltd.—makers of Kershaw Knives, Shun Cutlery and ZT Combat Knives—this is the first in its Zero Tolerance line of military knives. The company teamed up with knife designer Ken Onion to deliver the new series of professionalgrade combat knives. Onion is a longtime knife collector, a former Marine and an award-winning knife designer. The Zero Tolerance has great hand fit and ergonomics. Its blade is made of CPM 3V tool steel. According to Crucible Industries, CPM3V is a hightoughness, wear-resistant steel made using the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process and designed to provide maximum resistance to breakage and chipping. The matte black handle is 3-D machined G-10 for maximum grip. G10 is a made of compressed and baked layers of resin-soaked fiberglass, which are then compressed to bind the layers. It’s similar to Micarta, another popular pressure-made knife handle material. There’s a rounded or beveled groove or slot on both flat sides of the blade. In the old days, similar grooves on the blades of knives and swords were often referred to as “blood grooves,” but today these grooves are there to lighten the weight of the blade and nothing else. The knife is nothing short of handsome. The Kershaw Knives website indicates the knife costs $287.95. BRUCE VOYLES hortly after my friend James F. Parker had died, I came to a realization—before there was a “Bucket List” movie—that my life should be along the lines of “Nothing unsaid, nothing undone.” Reinforcement of that was standing in front of a congregation on Father’s Day, with each father in the church being asked to make a comment or two. Overcome by the moment, I told my father, in front of all there, that I loved him. It was something that had always been understood, but it was the first time as an adult that I had vocalized it to him. A few weeks later, a friend who had been in that congregation phoned me to say thanks, because after hearing me tell my father those words, he had in turn gone to his father and vocalized his love, something that he had not done previously. It had only been a few days before his father’s fatal heart attack. Nothing unsaid, nothing undone. So with that as a background, there are some things I want to be sure I have said to you, the Knives Illustrated readers. Granted, it’s not quite as morbid as writing one’s own obit—as I do plan to be around for a good long while, God willing. S ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT The ultimate compliment to a writer is not winning a writing scholarship, or placing in a major writing competition, or even having publishers who think enough of your writing to publish more than a dozen of your books. While I have been graced to have had those ambitions fulfilled, the ultimate compliment to any writer is the knowledge that someone is reading what you write. When a reader takes the time to men82 tion that they read your writing, or that you “get it” and connect with their feelings, it is at that moment that you know that what you’re doing is worthwhile; maybe not to many, but at least to someone. When you take into consideration that a reader is paying his hard-earned cash to read what you write, it is a supreme compliment. The top accolade for me, “I always turn to your column first.” I consider the same omen as seeing a deer or wild turkey on the road near my home. It’s an “ reading, you have allowed me to put off that career decision just a little bit longer. I was the youngest person in the game during those heady early days of the modern knife and knife collecting industry. Twenty years later, I still was. That graying of the collecting market also meant that, over the ensuing years, I would have to say goodbye to the majority of my mentors and old knife collecting friends. I’ve attended too many funerals of fellow brothers of the blade; and unfortunately that situation doesn’t improve. With far too many of those mentors and friends there were things … the important part of knife magazine editing is that I have the privilege to bring that information to you. omen that the rest of the day is going to be good, no matter what bad might happen throughout the day. Despite the joy and friendship that I enjoy at knife shows, or the discovery of a new maker or knife design, the important part of knife magazine editing is that I have the privilege to bring that information to you. The primary purpose of this column is to give a “thank you” to you. Thanks for allowing me to do this job for the past 13 years as editor of KI. THE JOURNEY I started working on my first knife magazine article in 1974. I was still in Journalism school, and had been a knife collector for three years or so prior. Over the ensuing years—as editor of National Knife Collector Magazine, owner of Blade Magazine and the Blade Show, and editor of Knives Illustrated—by your KNIVES ILLUSTRATED • BUYER’S GUIDE 2013 ” I wished that I had told them. But I waited too long. I wished I had thanked them for their help, their support, their companionship, and most important of all, their friendship. Nothing unsaid. Nothing undone. So hopefully this “thank you” is said with plenty of time remaining for us all. I have been known to get on this soapbox called “On The Edge,” and pass along opinions and advice. I love being able to do that. In my hiatus before taking the helm here at KI, my column was the one thing that I missed most. But if there’s one piece of advice that I could offer to anyone, it is that “nothing unsaid” is far better than assuming. While I hope to be writing this column right here for many years to come, I see no reason to put off expressing to KI readers how much I appreciate what I consider the ultimate compliment from you—your reading what I write and edit.
