Have fun outdoors at Half Term
Get back to nature with your
family this October break...
The October half term can be blessed with
fabulous weather, like an Indian Summer, or
drawing in towards winter. And now some
schools insist on a two week half term break.
So, where to start with a family to entertain –
especially with Halloween on the horizon?
A look through the diary listings of local,
individually-owned places such as country
pubs, visiting farms and garden centres will
throw up a few, cost-effective ideas.
For example the Little Angel pub on
Remenham Lane runs an all day Halloween
family party (www.thelittleangel.co.uk), while
Beale Park, near Pangbourne, is running a half term
activity programme to include a daily ghostly
Halloween Trail and Meet the Bugs encounter.
On Wednesday October 28 it will run a Bat Box
Building Day. It’s also worth noting that children in
fancy dress get free entrance to the park
(www.bealepark.co.uk).
When you need to get restless, small people outside,
one of the local National Trust
(www.nationaltrust.org.uk/southeast) gardens or
parklands could be the place to go. From the grassy
acres of highwayman Dick Turpin’s infamous past at
Pinkneys Green to the Autumn hues of Greys Court, this
national treasure has a lot to offer.
Autumn colours of red, gold and orange leaves start
from mid-October, and can go on late into November.
Most local to Henley is Greys Court, which has a play
fort in its grounds, a list of 50 things to do before you’re
11¾ and the chance to explore the past.
Further afield, the National Trust has Ashridge Estate,
Hughenden Manor and Stowe for Autumn colour.
At Ashridge there are miles of mature woodland, chalk downland and lush meadows to
explore. The magnificent beeches and mighty oaks are at their
Miles of mature
colourful best at this time of year. Golden afternoons in the
woodland, chalk
woods are crunchy underfoot with beech nuts and acorns.
Hughenden’s glorious gardens are still worth a visit and the
downland and
parkland there is glowing with colour and teeming with wildlife
lush meadows
in Autumn. A different day trip with the family would be the
sculpted landscape of Stowe, which softens in the mists and mellow fruitfulness of Autumn.
The valleys of the magnificent garden are fringed with orange and gold and the colours are
reflected in the lakes.

Round and Round The Garden by Alan Ayckbourn
The Mill at Sonning
The self-contained comedies in Ayckbourn’s trilogy,
The Norman Conquests, depict Norman, his in-laws
and the local vet over a summer weekend in an
English country house, shown from three different
perspectives in the family’s country home; in Round
and Round the Garden, the action is seen from the
garden. This wonderful comedy will have you laughing
out loud as you recognise the secrets and deceptions
that bubble beneath the surface of most family
relationships. Ayckbourn at his best!

Sex, glamour
& tons of talent
Henley Literary Festival 2015 kicked off in
earnest with two outspoken, funny and
entertaining women writers, who both
started their careers in fiction, from their
newspaper columns, one on each side of
‘The Pond’. Cindy Burrowes went along to
hear what they had to say.
Candace Bushnell
The glamorous 56-year-old American made
her first appearance at a British literary
festival on the first day of Henley’s.
She was interviewed on the stage of the
Kenton Theatre by acclaimed British author
and journalist Hannah Beckerman (The Dead
Wife’s Handbook) in front of a sell-out
audience, many of whom were Sex and the
City fans.
Candace wrote a column for the New York
Observer during the late 90s that was
adapted into the Sex and the City anthology,
the basis for the hit HBO series.
Since then she has written seven novels, the
latest of which is Killing Monica.
Although she stresses this is nonautobiographical, the story is of a successful
writer who becomes trapped by the film
success of her leading character, Monica.
When she talks about the women she likes
to write about she says: “I want to see women
who are free to be ambitious and think like
men. And women who are the primary
person in their lives.”
“The men in Killing Monica are not exactly
wreathed in glory, and the heroine marries a
bad boy, and then tries to recover from this
error. There is a recurring theme of women
taking back their own destiny, despite rife
sexism within the creative industry.”
HENLEY’S TOP FIVE READS
As thousands swarmed into Henley to listen to
authors of all genres in the last week of
September, they swamped the town’s famous,
independent book store, The Bell Bookshop.
By day three of the Henley Literary Festival the
top five sellers for this year’s reading
extravaganza’s first two and a half days was
as follows:
1 “Heat” and the paperback “Cold”
by Ranulph Fiennes’
2 “Blindsided” by Michael Lynagh
3 “Born Survivors” by Wendy Holden
4 “How good can we be” by Will Hutton
5 “F1 and Beyond” by Max Mosley
8
HENLEYlife | OC TOBER 2015
Candace says she is has always been aware,
since growing up in Connecticut in the 1960s,
that women were treated as second class
citizens.
“What do we give up as women when we
get married? For most women putting their
husband and their children first is fine, but for
some having that life is a slow death to their
soul,” she said, garnering murmurs of
approval from the mostly female audience.
Candace herself now lives in Connecticut
with her dogs, husband free.
So when asked what she would say to her
twenty-something self, in the spirit of
Feminism in 2015 she says: “Be wild, like Lena
Dunham (creator, writer and star of hit HBO
series Girls).
Candace
Bushnell
“If I were a singer I would
have been like Miley Cyrus”
“If I were a singer I would have been like
Miley Cyrus – I was wild when I was younger
but I could not express that – really go for it
and don’t care what people think.”
In terms of her top female role models she
adds,”I love female athletes, I love Beyoncé,
they are symbols to us of what we can do.
And success is having a happy family, having
a lovely Sunday lunch, making a home.
Success is feeling good in yourself, and loving
yourself.”

RACHEL JOHNSON
Rachel Johnson
Rachel, 50, (daughter of Stanley, sister of
Boris) has been entertaining Henley Literary
Festival audiences for years with her wit,
candour and razor sharp intellect.
She converses with her audience in a way
that makes us all feel as if we are having a chat
with her around the kitchen table.
In what other circumstance would we be
listening to a conversation that veers from
lesbian affairs, to intimate waxing, to a lengthy
discussion on the accountability of ‘Banksters’
for the credit crunch? Not exactly a quiet
afternoon at the Kenton Theatre.
Rachel’s opener is, “I love Henley, my
favourite festival of all and I know I am not the
top Johnson in Henley — never will be — but it
is so nice, especially today, with the sun
shining.”
She clarifies that she is fiercely protective of
her three brothers, and touches on her
unusual childhood with a largely absent
father, and a mother who was hospitalised
with severe anxiety.
She is professional at laughing at her own
expense and her novels appear to be comic
frivolity on the surface – until you hear her
talk, and in doing so she reveals that most of
the character types and situations in the
trilogy are based on what she has seen.
Fresh Hell is the third book after Notting Hell
and Shire Hell.
She reveals that most of the
character types and
situations are based on
what she has seen
Rachel explains that writing a novel takes a
lot of energy and hers has to be fuelled by
anger. In this case, anger at the fact that the
people at the heart of the banking industry,
post credit crunch, instead of being adversely
affected, seemed to thrive.
This, she says, was illustrated by the
increasing number of homes around her in
Notting Hill which had double basements
dug out for the gym, media room or humidor.
The basement dig is the hook on which her
plot is hung, where the remaining neighbours
have become younger, thinner and richer.
As to the fact that there is a mid-life crises
involved, in the form of a lesbian affair, she
has said that Fresh Hell is “the longest coming
out note in History”but for her audience she
clarified: “Sadly I have never fallen in love
with another woman.”
Instead she talked about how she met her
husband Ivo, who she likens to her hero
Ralph, and that Fresh Hell is “a huge hymn to
the consistency and comfort of a long
marriage.”
When asked by her interviewer, journalist
Sarah Oliver, if she would write an
autobiography Rachel says:” I would only
want to do it if I knew it would be a comic
classic like My Family and Other Animals.”.

FOOD & DRINK
The creation of Coppa Club has been triggered by
the change in the way people are living their lives
and the way they want to eat, drink, work and
socialise.
Lifestyles that once used to be the preserve of a
few Hoxton hipsters have now become the norm
for many of us.
It is predicted that 40 percent of the UK's
workforce will be freelancers by 2020. That fact is
coupled with a surge in home working, which is up
by more than 55 percent since 2000.
On the back of this shift in employment culture
and the UK's ever growing love of dining out,
Copper Club is aiming to be a
place that is totally relevant to
people’s lifestyles
Classy Coppa Club
restaurant and social hub
Cindy Burrowes takes a look at the stylish Coppa Club, the
newly transformed venue at The Great House, Sonning
T
he Great House sits on the Berkshire bank of the Thames at the foot of Sonning’s
200-year-old bridge. Its lawns run down to the river and over the years it has been
centre stage for many a wedding. The hugely successful food, drink and hospitality
entrepreneur, Hugh Osmond, has recently transformed it into Coppa Club.
Coppa Club will be flying the flag in the area for a new type of social hub that aims to
challenge and alter people’s normal perception of a traditional hotel restaurant. It
brings together under one roof all the elements that make the best restaurants, bars,
cafés, co-working spaces, members' clubs and even hotel lounges so enjoyable.
10 HENLEYlife | OC TOBER 2015
Coppa Club is aiming to be a place that is totally
relevant to people's lifestyles and embraces the
way we can now work remotely and flexibly as well
as the way we want to socialise, eat and drink.
To this end Coppa Club serves good food inspired
by fresh Italian ingredients from early morning
through to late at night, at affordable prices.
The menus have been carefully designed so that
no matter the time of day or week, there is always
something to take your fancy.
The 3,000 sq ft space has been zoned to create
areas that guests can use to suit their mood.
Every last detail has been considered from tables
that are the right height to work at, as well as eat,
to power outlets for laptops and chargers all over
the place, as well as Wi-Fi.
Coppa Club has been designed to meet people's
needs from breakfast and brunch through to
afternoon tea, cocktails, dinner and beyond. From
a mothers' meeting for morning coffee,
professionals who want somewhere to work
remotely, long lost friends celebrating together
over a boozy lunch to a couple on a first date, the
idea is that there is somewhere for everyone to feel
comfortable.

Spring Onion Tart
Make spring onions the hero of the
dish with this indulgent tart topped
with whole spring onions, crème
fraiche, pancetta and pine nuts and
complete with a hidden layer of
Parmesan in the puff pastry base.
Serves: 2
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes
You’ll need:
1 pack ready rolled puff pastry
40g Parmesan, grated
1 egg yolk
200g crème fraiche
6 slices pancetta, chopped
5 spring onions, trimmed and cut in
half lengthways
2 tbsp pine nuts
Salt and pepper (to season)
What to do:
Heat the oven to 200ºC and put a

Recipe courtesy of www.lovethecrunch.com
Unroll the pastry onto some non-stick
baking paper with the long edge
closest to you. Sprinkle half of the
parmesan over the left hand half of
the pastry then fold the right side
over to create a seam of cheese
through the middle of the pastry.
Gently roll out to its original size.
Score a border 2cm from the edge of
the pastry all the way around then
transfer, along with the baking
parchment, to the hot baking tray.
Cook for 10 minutes until just golden.
While the pastry is cooking combine
the egg, crème fraiche, remaining
cheese and season.
After 10 minutes take the pastry out
of the oven and gently flatten the
centre of the pastry leaving the
border intact.
Spread the crème fraiche inside the
border then top with pancetta and
spring onions. Return to the oven for
10-15 minutes.
The filling should be cooked and
golden. Toast the pine nuts in a frying
pan and serve the tart scattered with
nuts.

Dress up for an
Autumn wedding
FASHION
Autumn is a popular time to get married, but is an awkward season
for the guests. Their outfits will be dictated by the changeable
weather. The key, therefore to the guests’ outfits, will be to have
something simple and all-seasonal that can be glamorised with
accessories.
Henley has a few independent boutiques, which will welcome you
to browse through their huge range of eclectic accessories. One
advantage for using a local independent is that you are unlikely to
suffer the embarrassment of wearing the same item as another
wedding guest.
Manza has a unique range of shoes, sandals and boots, whereas
long-established clothing shops such as
Fluidity, Barbara Easton and Daisy Boutique
cover all the bases from the full outfit, to
scarves, jewellery and accessories. Henley

Get fit to party...
Start now to get yourself in shape for the
party season writes Cindy Burrowes
November into
December is the
traditional time for
parties. Although the
crash of 2008 has
restricted some of the
larger corporation’s
celebrations of the
festive season, many
businesses and
organisations still
hold Christmas
events.
This potentially
endless round of
dressing up and
conversing with colleagues or strangers is all well and good if you are
feeling fabulous about yourself. If you are not body-confident, this
looming spectre can leave a veil of dread over the whole season.
Therefore now is a good time to start making yourself feel good, or
at least better.
With six to eight weeks to go there is enough time to make a
significant change to your mind and body, no matter what your
starting point.
It is proven that crash diets and unrealistic exercise regimes can
actually be detrimental. So maybe pick five changes a week that you
are going to implement such as cutting down on alcohol, avoiding
sugar or making the effort to runup the stairs more.
Or research a programme that will suit your lifestyle, and has a finite
end. If you feel better on that programme or regime then chances are
you will carry it on past December and won’t have to be reading this
advice again next year!
You are likely to feel more
energetic and better
about yourself
An example of a manageable, realistic programme is Louise Parker’s
online programme to be found at (www.louiseparker.uk.com). It’s free
and does not involve joining a gym.
Louise is a busy mother of three who knows what it is like to have to
squeeze in exercise and to feed a family. Her programme started me
moving again by using the daily dog walk as a 40 minute workout and
even if you only stick to her recommendations half of the time, you are
likely to feel more energetic and better
about yourself.
Yoga is also proven to have this effect —
the stretching, deep breathing and reconnecting with your body is a fantastic
start to re-booting yourself. We are
blessed in Henley to have a wealth of
expertise at our finger tips with at least
eight yoga studios offering a huge variety
of yoga, yoga-based classes, meditation
and stretching.
Many yoga studios will also offer one-toone sessions, which may be just what you
need to kick start yourself. Yoga is easy to
practise at home once you have a grasp
of it, even if you only have ten minutes.
And here’s what to wear...
In the spirit of exercise in all its forms Henley Life has found some gems in which to clothe its readers, no matter what form the
exercise may take. There is an increasing amount of yoga, cycle, run and gym clothing on the market now but here are a few
places to go locally to find something a little bit different...
1 The Asics Reversible Capri
Two for the price of £37 with these comfy, easy-towear Capri training tights. One side is plain blue, the
other patterned, as you see. There a more to choose
from and a greater range of exercise clothes from
Henley’s very own sports shop, Henley Sports, on the
corner of Greys Road. Telephone 01491 573687.
2 Run On
Athlete Service have opened up in the centre of
Henley with a wealth of expertise behind them.
And one of their experts swears by these groundbreaking
trainers by Swiss company On Running. They stock a variety
of them, for different terrains and purposes; from road
running to winter running. However, they are finding that
many people are buying them to wear daily about their
business. Their secret is the built in shock absorbers, and
their light weight. After all,
they were designed by an
injury-prone athlete, to
prevent further injury.
Prices are between £100 and
£125 per pair from Athlete
Service, The Mill, Greys Road.

Preparing yourself for
the party season
Along with improving mind and body there
are many things out there that can be done to
improve your skin, nails and hair – and glow
from within. Some procedures are longerlasting, others give a temporary, but effective,
boost. The Henley Life team has picked some
of their favourite beauty fixes for the party
season ahead.
1
Long lasting, more permanent
treatments
Over the last year or so there has been an
explosion of innovative skin tightening and wrinkle reduction
methods in the beauty market. We are lucky enough to have the
Henley Clinic (www.henleyclinic.co.uk) in our midst.
They offer a comprehensive choice of treatments to get you looking
fab. We can recommend their Ultherapy – a revolutionary ultrasound
treatment which gives the face and neck a lift. The key here is that if
you undertake any of their long-term courses of
treatments, plan them ahead of time to look your best
for the party season.
2
You are what you eat
Deep down we all know this, but as the most hectic
social schedule of the year collides with the start of
winter it is sensible to boost your immune system and be
ready to ward off lurgies, cope with the party season,
BEAUTY
and maintain glowing skin. For a start pop in to
Bodywise, the health food shop on the Market Place,
and ask the knowledgeable people in there who can
guide you. In terms of skin and nails a good natural
supplement that seems to work is Wild Nutrition’s FoodState Skin Hair and Nails daily supplement from Space
NK, Duke Street. A £30 bottle is a month’s supply. And
to really boost the immune system and keep on hand
for when you feel a lurgy approaching try Source Naturals Wellness
Formula Herbal Defense Complex (£17.41 for 180 capsules from
Amazon UK).
3
Ointments and unctions
If you would rather just improve your skin care
routine to prepare for the party season then
there are so many serums, masks, creams and
fluids out there – it is worth researching what
may suit your skin and your budget. Sunday
Riley’s Good Genes Treatment (£85) makes
your skin look like it has had a bit of a lift, and
the Glamglow YouthMud mask (£25 for 15 ml) leaves your face
tingling and smooth.
4
Hair boost
Hairburst is the current ‘must have’ daily vitamin
which claims to give you everything you need to grow
the longest, healthiest hair possible (and their website
posts photographic evidence). Hairburst uses natural
nutrients that at the very least can help with your
overall health. The RRP is £24.99 for one month’s
supply at www.hairburst.com – Hairburst has also just
launched in Holland & Barrett.

HEALTH FOCUS
Wheezy infants and toddlers
Autumn is fast approaching and chest
problems in children are on the increase.
Dr Nick Mann, Consultant Paediatrician at
The Berkshire Independent Hospital
discusses issues relating to wheezy infants
and toddlers.
The relatively small size of infants’ airways
means that narrowing of small and medium
sized ones due to mucus and/or constriction
leads to rapid respiratory compromise.
One of the most common disorders in this
age group is bronchiolitis. This is exclusively a
winter infection due to a virus and has a peak
incidence at three to four months of age. It
starts with a cold/snuffly nose and persistent
moist cough which progresses to a
wheezy/rattly chest and poor feeding.
There may be a low grade fever and a day
and night cough for a few days. Most infants
stay at home and do not need antibiotics but
ex- premature babies, those who cannot feed
and others with marked breathing difficulties
need assessment by a doctor or nurse.
The duration of illness is usually three to six
days and treatment is supportive and hospital
admission is only occasionally needed.
Another condition is viral-induced wheeze
(VIW). A common cold virus precedes the
chest symptoms and peak incidence is eight
months to three years of age. Although
having a cough and a rattly chest the infant is
often well. Predisposing factors are:
• Parental smoking
• Communal child care
• Several older siblings
• Previous similar episodes
• Family history of asthma
Toddlers who are poorly with severe cough,
high temperature, not feeding or very chesty
need to be seen by their GP or practice nurse.
Treatment is initially with high dose inhaled
salbutamol with a spacer and facemask in
those over eight months of age. Below this
age bronchodilators rarely work. Oftensix to
eight puffs will be needed and doses can be
SEE A SLIMMER YOU

repeated after three to four hours and parents
will need tuition in inhaler technique by a
nurse or pharmacist.
A Winter nasal influenza
immunisation should be
considered
Antibiotics are generally not helpful as
bacterial infection is rarely an issue.
A winter nasal influenza immunisation
should be considered in those over 12
months of age having repeated symptoms.
The vast majority of infants are managed at
home and do well.
Finally croup which is another common viral
infection affects the throat in children aged
one to five years. The characteristic cough
sounds as if it is coming from the throat and is
barking in nature. Again the condition is often
mild and better in a few days. However In
severe cases which are uncommon children
can get quite unwell and distressed so they
need medical assessment to see if treatment
is needed with two to three days of oral
steroid which brings rapid relief.

The perfect month to plant

He has been working on English soil for
more than 10 years and has grown to love our
Weeping Willows, but misses his favourite
home plant, Pride of India.
Stubbings charges a small fee for their
planting service, and HJ recognises that
occasionally they may be a pound or two
dearer than garden centres.
“But we actually know what we’re talking
about when we sell a plant, or plant it,” said
an enthusiastic HJ.
October is the perfect month to complete any
substantial planting needed in your garden.
The soil is cooling down, but there is still
enough warmth to establish your specimen
plants or a new hedge.
The new nursery manager of Stubbings
Nursery agrees: “We’re happy to do any
hedge planting and it’s a fantastic time of
year to do it as they set really well because
there is no heat stress on them,” said HJ.
He took over the nursery early in the
Summer and is keen to stress the expertise
that lies in-house with all of his nursery staff.

Stubbings nursery is a long established plant
specialist nursery with connections all over

larger, and therefore stronger, than most
garden centre fare.
Often they are more mature plants. Their
hedging comes in root ball form, which
means it is cheaper to plant a longer hedge
be it Buxux, Prunus or Beech.

Another eye-catching flower is the

FLOORING
by Caversham Tiles
Q: What are the advantages of tiles over
other types of flooring?
A: Modern tiles are robust enough to
stand up to all the challenges of modern
living, whether it’s messy kids, muddy pets
or even careless adults. New production
techniques mean that porcelain can now
imitate stone, limestone, marble and even
wood flooring with none of the costly and
time-consuming maintenance that natural
products demand.

Q: Can you advise on storage in bathrooms?
A: Most bathrooms we design include
bathroom furniture and storage in either fitted
or modular style.
Fitted units often provide for more storage,
hide unsightly pipework and incorporate a
work surface too. Many of our customers
comment on how much bigger their bathroom
looks after our transformations. Modular units
look sleek and stylish and are mostly wall hung,
but do normally require more work involved in
the installation process to conceal the
pipework on basin and WC units.
There are lots of options available too, with
drawers and normal cupboards in different
sizes to suit most bathroom dimensions and all

WC units have sensor activated flushing if

Q: We want a home office in our garden. How
secure are they?
A: They are as secure as your house. Doors and
windows would be the same as your house
with multi point locking systems, and if you
want a security alarm system installed we can
do that as well.

Preparing for
Winter
Early October is probably the latest time to
prepare for Winter, but it is not too late.
Although October can get chilly, and the
frosts come round, the dying days of Autumn
can be mild.
However, don’t get complacent, a little
forethought and preparation can mean the
difference between a safe winter and one full
of chills and infections.
Britain’s largest charity working with the
elderly is Age UK and they recommend going
through the following checklist for Winter
preparation:
*Have your heating system serviced and your
chimney swept.
* If you have wood-burning, coal or gas
heaters make sure there’s adequate
ventilation. Never block air vents, and get
your boiler serviced every 12 months by a gas
engineer.
* If water pipes freeze they can burst, so make
sure you know where the main stopcock is so
you can turn off the water. Lag outside pipes if
you can, to prevent them from freezing.
* Have your electric blanket serviced at least
every three years.
* Make sure your smoke alarm is working. You
can ask your local fire service to check your
home for fire safety. It’s free and you may be
eligible to get free smoke alarms fitted.
* Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in
each room that has a gas appliance.
* Make sure you claim all the financial support
you can to help with heating bills.
* Dress in plenty of layers and make sure you
have warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles.
* Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put
on steps or paths in icy weather.
* Consider fitting a grab rail if you have steps
at your front or back door.
Keep simple cold, flu and sore
throat remedies in
the house
pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia, if
you haven’t had it and are over 65.
* Have good hand hygiene – a simple way to
prevent the spread of germs, with soap and
water.
* Order repeat prescriptions in plenty of time,
particularly if bad weather is forecast.
* Ask your local pharmacy if they offer a
prescription pick-up and delivery service.
You could do your food shopping
online and get it delivered to
your door
* Keep basic food items in the cupboard or
freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping.
You could also do your food shopping online
and get it delivered to your door.
* Eat healthily and keep as active as possible.
* Ask your family, neighbours or friends if they
could call or visit you more often.
* Keep a battery-operated radio, torch and
spare batteries handy in case there’s a power
cut. Keep your mobile phone, laptop or tablet
fully charged so you can use the battery
power if there’s no electricity.
* Keep a list of emergency numbers, such as
your utility companies, by your phone.
* Keep simple cold, flu and sore throat
remedies in the house.
* Follow up your GP’s invitation to have a flu
jab. Also ask about the ‘pneumococcal’ jab for

MY HENLEY LIFE
Lorraine Hillier
Henley’s Town Mayor
L
orraine Hillier is a well known figure in
Henley as a business owner and a town
councillor of 16 years.
However, this year, she was elected Henley
Town Mayor. So although Henley people are
used to seeing her bustling between her two
enterprises: Hot Gossip coffee shop on Friday
Street, and Upstairs and Downstairs Tea Room
on Duke Street – they will now see her on duty
in her Mayoral Regalia.
Lorraine hails from Yorkshire and moved
south to work, but after 36 years in the same
profession she took a Barista coffee making
course – and was hooked.
Last year she complemented her cosy, 60sthemed coffee shop with an Art Deco tea
emporium.
Lorraine has long been a champion for the
local business and is often seen getting
involved with charity fundraising.
through it — perfect! And yet close to
London.
The people of Henley are all very friendly too.
It is like belonging to a large extended family!
What do you dislike about Henley?
Driving round and round looking for a
parking space! One perk of being Mayor is
having a guaranteed parking space. I shall
miss that!
Where is your favourite place to eat and
drink in Henley?
Two actually! Hot Gossip and Upstairs and
Downstairs. (just a bit biased!) I do however
like Cafe Buendia on Bell Street, they are very
friendly and do amazing pizza.
The Catherine Wheel is great value and I also
like to relax at Phyllis Court.
Why are you in Henley?
I came to Henley in 1990. I was a graphic
designer at the time and moved from Sheffield
to take a position in Sulhamstead. A friend
took me to Henley and I decided there and
then I wanted to live here.
What is your favourite shop?
There are so many! All in Henley deserve
credit. I do like a bargain and love vintage
clothes so always have a look round the
charity shops — I recommend them all —
Oxfam, Cancer Research, Blue Cross, Helen
and Douglas House, Sue Ryder.
What do you like about Henley?
It is a very pretty market town with a lot of
history and of course the Thames running
What is your prized possession?
I think my visitors’ book at the coffee shop. I
was lucky to have had musician/composer
30 HENLEYlife | OC TOBER 2015
Jon Lord as a regular customer and he wrote
in my book, which I treasure.
I also had Robert Plant, Nick Heyward and
Mike Hurst (who opened Hot Gossip) write in
it.
What is your pet hate?
Corporate speak — clichés like: direction of
travel, low hanging fruit, or holistic approach.
They are all very overused.
What is your favourite book/film or song?
Favourite book: Look at Me by Anita Brookner
Favourite film - The Deerhunter
Favourite song - Famous Blue Raincoat
(Leonard Cohen)
What is your biggest regret?
Spending too many years in the one job although I do encourage my staff to stay.
I thought of renaming the coffee shop after
the song — Hotel California (you can check
out anytime you like but you can never leave).
What is the best advice you were ever
given?
I've been given a lot of good advice over the
years and rarely take it — which had been a
mistake, so probably the best advice is to
listen when it's being given and act on it.
