province of Castellon. The
company has made official

Processing technologies
for fine ceramics have undergone further development
through the adaptation of
established machine technology to the specific tasks
of the ceramic technology
and its raw and processed
materials. The reduction of
the processing time of sanitary slurries from five days
to a maximum of one day,
achieved by using high-performance dispersing mixers,
is one example that is worth
mentioning. Another advantage is that fewer temporary
additives are required and
casting times are influenced
positively.
The optimized preparation of color pigments for
conversion into ceramic
inks in ceramic-coated agitator bead mills has clearly
advanced the printing stability and lifetime of inks for
digital tile decoration. As a
result, cost reductions have
become possible.
The last few years have
witnessed the introduction
of digital tile decoration on a
large scale. Meanwhile, more
than 4000 ink jet printers
have been installed worldwide. Digital glazing, which
is currently in the market

inspired in classical Delft Ceramic School

lassical blue and
white hues, which were used so
frequently in the
past, are making a return to
center stage in inspiring the
latest interior design trends
and adding a touch of Bohemian style to our interiors.
This color array was formed
in the Delft Ceramic School
in Holland during the 17th
century and has proven to
be a timeless pair.
After being inspired by
the Delft Ceramic School,
this trend was brought to
the historical kitchens and
bathrooms of palaces in the
17th century. The materials
were bought from China,
and then constructed into
tiles by Italian immigrant artisans. In addition to flower
motifs and traditional geometric styles, prominent design schemes in the tiles also
included landscapes with
windmills, plains and seas.

new Edition of the
Design Competition by Cevisama Lab in two main cathegories: Industrial design and
technological innovation of
ceramic products and Design bathroom equipment.
The ceramic design contest is divided in turn into
“ceramic products shaped by
semi-pressed” and “ceramic
products formed by other
methods.” Formal innovation and aesthetic, functional innovation, decorative
development, good value,
safety and respect for the environment shall be assessed
in this mode.
The bathroom design
competition is convened
under the theme “New technologies applied to the
bathroom”. Functional and
creative solutions arising
from the application of new
technologies without forgetting the latest trends will be
especially valued.
Each category will have
two prizes of 2,000 euros to
the winner and $ 1,000 for
the second. Again, Cevisama
Lab elects an independent
jury of distinguished professionals to determine the
selection of parts and the
granting of awards.
The deadline for applications for on line registration
ends on 31 December 2015.

showroom’s refurbishment,

the creation of a central point with its own personality,
one which gets to show the

Vanke China and Daniel Libeskind create an
impressive buildind at Universal Exposition
T
he 2015 Universal
Exposition was inaugurated in Milan
on 1 May, Labour
Day. This edition’s theme,
Feeding the planet, has not prevented major international
non-food companies from
taking their place in this
world event alongside the
pavilions rich in typical food
from all over the world.
Vanke, the Chinese residential real estate giant,
was only one of the many
companies at Expo 2015 in
Milan. A great company, for
which a great architect, Daniel Libeskind, has created a
pavilion inspired by China’s
tradition, philosophy, and
history dotted with “misty mountains, rivers, hills,
and sinuous dragons” to use
Libeskind’s words.
Alongside Vanke and Daniel Libeskind, a third ele-
ment has made it possible
to create such a cutting-edge
structure with an undeniable visual impact. We are
referring to Casalgrande
Padana’s Fractile porcelain
stoneware slabs. These slabs, designed by Libeskind,
feature a three-dimensional
red décor, which provides a
metallic effect.

slabs have a three-dimensional fractal pattern and are
the result of a sophisticated
industrial procedure, which
includes glazing and firing
processes at 1250 °C, using
carefully selected mixtures
of clays, quartz and feldspar.
Oxide saturated metallic glazes provide the ceramic surface with a dynamic colourchanging effect. The special
colour was developed specifically for this project in the
Casalgrande Padana colourimeter laboratory.
Italian brand’s work has
been instrumental in the
completion of the Vanke Pavilion within the set deadlines (it was the first pavilion
to be handed to Expo). A majestic operation, especially
considering the complexity
of the processes involved.
After completing the frame and installing the steel
bracing struts, the horizontal
corrugated sheet metal elements were fitted in, and the
insulating core of the casing,
made with mineralised wood
fibre panels, was secured in
place. Finally, a layer of shotcrete was applied on top of
the support reinforcement.
The volume of the pavilion
enables the installation of a
metal substructure for anchoring the ceramic cladding
developed by Libeskind and
Casalgrande Padana. H

n this article Fila explains how to clean
your wood-effect porcelain tiles, one of today’s
most popular flooring materials, which over the last ten
years has seen an increasingly more refined evolution
in the reproduction of the
natural grain of wood.
It is in these very grain
that dirt tends to stick and
is often difficult to clean. To
solve this problem, Fila has
devised products to guarantee cleaning and protection
against dirt for your floor in
wood-effect porcelain tiles.
FILA DETERDEK
The first thing to do is make
sure that the floor is really
clean, with thorough removal of that at times almost
invisible film that inevitably
forms after laying of this
kind of tile. It is therefore indispensable to use an
acid detergent like Deterdek
for the initial cleaning, the
only product that eliminates
all kinds of laying residues
(glue, grouting, concrete,…)
and guarantees correct initial cleaning.
How to use? First of all, wet
the floor with a little water,
then pour a dilution of Deterdek and hot water (1 litre
of product every 5 of water).
Work on just a few metres at
a time, wait 2-3 minutes and

Italian ceramic industry reports record tile exports
in 2014 and total sales amounted to 394.6 million
T
he 2014 figures for
the Italian ceramic
industry were unveiled at the Confindustria Ceramica 2015
Members’ Meeting held on 9
June this year.
In the year to 31 December
2014 there were 223 manufacturers of ceramic tiles,
sanitaryware, tableware and
refractory materials operating in Italy with 25,598 employees and a total turnover
of 5.687 billion euros, 75%
of which was generated by
exports.
The tile sector continued
to account for the majority
of turnover at 4.91 billion
euros, while the other three
segments generated a combined turnover of 773 million euros.
In 2014 the Italian tile
industry consisted of 150
companies (6 fewer than in
2013) with 19,430 employees (1,107 fewer than in
2013) and a total output of
381.7 million square meters
(5% up on 2013).
Like the previous year,
the sector’s sales exceeded
production, allowing it to
take a further step towards
the gradual rebalancing of
warehouse stock. Total sales
amounted to 394.6 million
sq.m (+1.3%). While the domestic market experienced
a further downturn to 80.8
million sq.m (6.6% down
on 2013), the export markets continued to recover
reaching 313.7 million sq.m
(+3.6%).
Growth in value terms was

The breakdown of Chinese
exports by large geographical areas shows that sales
increased only in Africa and
Oceania (by 5.7% and 12.7%,
respectively). China suffered
a decline in exports to all
other areas of the world, including Asia where they fell
for the second year running (2.6% in 2013 and -3% in 2014)
to reach 552.6 million sq.m,
52% of total Chinese exports.
Sales also declined sharply in South America (99.8
million sq.m, -22.8%), largely
due to the downturn in Brazil (-46%), while exports to
North America remained virtually stable at 82.1 million
sq.m (-0.8%) in spite of the
fall in sales in the United States (46.8 million sq.m,-2.8%).
As for Europe, Chinese exports not only fell for the fourth year running in EU markets
(24.5 million sq.m, -7.7%) but
also suffered the first decline
in non-EU Europe (22.1 million sq.m, -10.8%). H

erurbis is a European project headed in Spain by
Castellón Town
Council, Ascer and the Institute of Ceramic Technology (ITC). Its main aim is to
promote and disseminate
the use of ceramic materials
in urban areas through joint initiatives by ceramic
manufacturing clusters in
southwest Europe (SUDOE),
bringing sophistication to
ceramic materials through
the integration of high technology.
At the same time, Cerurbis aspires to create innovative products, methods and
services with a high added
value that can be immediately transferred to the rest of
the industrial fabric. These
services combine competitive intelligence studies with
strategic analysis methods
with a view to seeking efficient innovation, without
overlooking user tastes and
requirements and social and
technological trends.
In late 2014, the initial
results of the project were
shown in the form of 8 innovative prototype ceramic
products for use in urban design. These high-tech prototypes were developed by the
three countries participating
in the European project.

Qualicer 2016, the global forum for ceramic tile, presented in June its
Technical Committee, with over 50 internationally recognised personalities
T
he countdown has
started with the
presentation of the
Technical Committee, charged with watching
over the quality and innovation of the submitted work.
The presentation event,
which brought together numerous representatives from
the ceramic and related sectors, took place on the 3rd of
June at the Castellón Official
College of Industrial Engineers. Over 50 internationally recognised personalities
from the ceramic industry
and related sectors, as well
as from the field of research,
sit on the Technical Committee charged with evaluating the level of quality and
innovation of the work submitted for the 14th Qualicer
Congress in Castellon.
The Qualicer Technical
Committee is made up of
an extensive team of experts, with a multidisciplinary character, from over 10
countries, recruited after
intense contact through visits to the major trade shows
and international forums of
the sector.
The committee members
mostly come from the ceramic industry and related
sectors, such as the machinery, glaze, or frit branches,
belong to prestigious technology institutes, or conduct
their activities in a university
or academic environment.
The Qualicer Technical
Committee will evaluate
over one hundred submissions from 15 countries. The
papers and posters selected
by the Qualicer Technical
Committee will be presented by their authors during
the meeting, and they will
be published and handed
out to attendees at the beginning of the Congress.

Chairman of Confindustria
Ceramica; and Fernando
Roig, Chairman of the Pamesa Group.
Block B will include a panel debate on ceramic tile
and construction. The first
confirmed panel member is
Svend Hovmand, Chairman
of ISO Technical Committee
ISO TC 189 and Chairman
Emeritus at Crossville. The
panel debate will be chaired
by Bart Bettiga, Executive
Director of the National Tile
Contractors’ Association.
Block C will feature a lecture on ceramic tile production and a day devoted to digital decoration, presented
by Vicente Sanz, Director of
the Instituto Universitario
de Tecnología Cerámica. It
will include a panel debate,
Materials and Printheads,
with panel members from
top companies, chaired by
José Cabedo, Chief Operating
Officer Surface Products, Endeka Ceramics.
There will also be a panel
debate, Machines and Tile Manufacturers, confirmed panel
members being José Vicente
Tomás, Kerajet Chairman,
and Máximo Dolz, Technical
Director of Grespania.

Qualicer was born as a modest forum for debate on
tile as a product; it became
a world congress on ceramic
tile quality, and later not
only addressed the quality
of the process, the product,
and tile installation, but also
the quality of every element
involved in the complex network of the ceramic business

project

To foster sustainable research through design
n evolving cradle,
i.e. a cradle that can
adapt to a baby’s
growth; a fibre
bench made by the folding
method; a display stand made
with ceramics for a shoe store; and ceramic claddings for
teaching centre façades were
the main projects involved in
the pilot trials conducted at
ITC in the European SInnDesign project, whose main aim
is to foster sustainable innovation through design.
The projects will be presented in a Demo Workshop
at the Castellón Chamber of
Commerce on 29 May. The
event will also be featuring
the success stories of other
companies from the SInnDesign network in this field. The
companies involved are ROOFECO (polymer roofing tile
manufacturer) and OKOTION
(manufacturer of products for
healthy living environments
and ergonomic furniture).
The latest trends in habitat
sustainability will also be set
out. The workshop will end
with a general carpet session
aimed at defining courses of
work and joint cooperation
strategies.

materials and tools
for the habitat and
building materials

that SInnDesign
contributes to

competitiveness

Prospektiker, Cefire and the Castellón Chamber of Commerce,

CEFIRE (Centre for training,
innovation, and educational
resources), and the Castellón
Chamber of Commerce, is
one of several being held by
these organisations in the European SInnDesign project.
With a view to facilitating
matters for companies seeking to design and launch
products in the Design for
Sustainability or Design for
All context, the Spanish project partners will be disseminating training materials and
innovative tools developed in
the project, for Vocational
Training students and companies manufacturing habitat
products (in the construction,
furniture, and textile sphere),
wishing to implement Design
for Sustainability.
In addition to the above organisations, the SinnDesign
network includes several
universities and training and
research centres from Denmark, Austria and Portugal.
These are all working together in SInnDESIGN, funded
by the European Union Lifelong Learning Programme. H
