Ireland has maintained competitiveness over the last few years, resulting in increasing overseas investment and as long as we stay competitive, this bodes well for some years to come. The improved job landscape in Ireland certainly fed through to macro-economic figures and unemployment levels. Whilst Ireland’s strong growth is subject to national or international shocks, there is no reason that Ireland can’t get unemployment back to record low levels. But maintaining the discipline to stay competitive is key to this and politically that is a challenge. open on the hard skills of applicants, but more selective on cultural fit and attitude of all candidates. This is evidenced in major focus on employer branding and, in particular, companies’ CSR initiatives being at their core. Finally an interesting phenomenon in 2015 was that permanent recruitment grew faster than contract and temporary recruitment. As national and global recovery was a little tentative, organisations were still a little risk adverse, and would take on a contractor if they could rather than a permanent member of staff. As the rate of recovery increases and confidence is restored, more companies are comfortable increasing headcount long term. In terms of specific skills in demand, analytics has risen to be the most wanted. Analytics encapsulates other skills and is featured in all sectors, but vacancies for data scientists, analysts, big data, risk, etc. have risen sharply. The other current trend, as the global “war for talent” heats up, is the continued focus on culture and purpose from hiring companies. Many organisations are investing more in training and development, so may be a little more Adrian McGennis CEO Sigmar Recruitment | Salary Guide Ireland 2016 | www.sigmar.ie In Demand for 2016 Hot Jobs Financial Reporting Accountant (Funds) Financial Accountant External Reporting Accountant Internal Auditor Financial Analyst Top Skills Auditing Skills Financial Accounting Financial Analysis Solvency II Reporting Capability Sox Reporting Capability Salaries in 2016 Salaries will continue to grow by 5-10% in the financial services sector in 2016. Additional salary growth of around 10% is likely to be witnessed during the year in the contracts area as the volume of workers available for contracts or temporary positions continues to be reduced dramatically due to the increase in permanent jobs available. 2 Financial Services “More growth expected in 2016 than any year since the crash.” The financial services accountancy jobs market progressed from recovery mode in 2015, a trend which is set to continue. There has been a significant increase in qualified and part qualified accounting jobs across the financial services sector. The larger financial services companies are now recruiting for multiple permanent positions within their finance departments simultaneously. This is a clear indicator of the shift towards hiring for the long-term rather than tentatively offering only fixed-term contracts. Job opportunities in the financial services accountancy market will continue to grow in 2016. In addition to the new positions being created, the turnover in the market is much higher than it has been in recent years due to returning confidence. Accountants at all levels are much more willing to take the calculated risk of moving jobs in order to further their careers. Top Tip For 2016 Upskilling, no matter how minimal, will increase your worth in the financial services accountancy market. This could be done by undertaking an IFRS course or by widening your knowledge within a specific area within financial services. 3 Sigmar Recruitment | Salary Guide Ireland 2016 | www.sigmar.ie DUBLIN 1-2 Years Exp REST OF IRELAND 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp 1-2 Years Exp 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp Accounts Receivable 28-32k 32-38k 38k + 25-28k 28-32k 32k + Accounts Payable 28-32k 32-38k 38k + 25-28k 28-32k 32k + Transfer Pricing 55-65k 65-75k 75k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + Group Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + Statutory Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + Financial Planning and Analysis 50-55k 55-65k 65k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + MI Analyst 50-55k 55-65k 65k + 30-40k 40-50k 50k + Business Analyst 50-55k 55-65k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Pensions Accountant 45-55k 55-60k 60k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Solvency II Accountant 55-60k 60-70k 70k + 40-45k 45-55k 55k + Part Qualified Accountant (Reg Reporting, Fin Reporting, Global Markets, Group Finance) 26-38k 38-40k 40k + 25-30k 30-40k 40k + SPV Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Sox Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + Compliance Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 35-45k 45-55k 55k + Treasury Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Internal Auditor 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Regulatory Reporting Accountant (Qualified) 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Financial Reporting Accountant (Qualified) 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Finance Analyst (Qualified) 52-58k 58-68k 68k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Qualified Management Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Qualified Financial Accountant 52-58k 58-65k 65k + 40-50k 45-55k 55k + Compliance Manager 60-75k 75-85k 85k + 50-55k 55-65k 65k + Treasury Manager 60-75k 75-80k 75k + 50-55k 55-65k 65k + Internal Audit Manager 60-75k 75-80k 80k + 50-55k 55-65k 65k + Finance Manager 60-65k 65-85k 85k + 55-65k 65-70k 70k + Financial Reporting Manager 65-80k 80-90k 90k + 45-60k 60-65k 65k + Head of Financial Reporting 75-90k 90-100k 100k + 65-75k 75-85k 85k + Financial Controller 70-80k 80-90k 90k + 55-70k 70-75k 75k + Finance Director 85-100k 100-120k 120k + 75-85k 85-95k 95k + All salaries taken as annual in Euros, based on working in Ireland. Some roles may even exceed a 7% increase due to supply and demand issues that will be experienced. Industry & Commerce “2016 is trending for further growth and employment for finance professionals in the commerce and industry space.” The industry accountancy market at present is vibrant and there is a growing sense of confidence from employers and candidates alike. Every month there are increased numbers of multinationals choosing Ireland as their European or EMEA base due to key factors such as our highly skilled workforce and tax efficient operating environment. This creates numerous opportunities for finance professionals driving competition for top talent and pushing up salaries in the market. The most sought after roles at present as we move into 2016 are commercial, group accounting and analyst positions. These jobs allow finance professionals to have contact with different departments outside of accountancy and thus offers them a greater overview of the business as a whole. Whilst there is a high demand for these positions, finding someone with the experience and the industry knowledge is a tough task and salaries are increasing all of the time because of this. With numerous US multinationals and global companies setting up their EMEA bases here in Ireland, there is an increased demand for all types of finance professionals. In addition to accounting skills and experience, companies look to hire people who can have an impact on their progression and growth. Culture fit is something which is becoming more and more important, especially within recently created companies that are growing quickly. Top Tip For 2016 Learn a second European language or at least develop your basic understanding of a language. Accountants with French, German or Dutch are always in high demand and having this skill will make you more employable within the industry sector. 5 Sigmar Recruitment | Salary Guide Ireland 2016 | www.sigmar.ie DUBLIN REST OF IRELAND 1-2 Years Exp 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp 1-2 Years Exp 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp Accounts Assistant/Technician 23-30k 28-33k 33k + 22-25k 25-30k 30k + Accounts Receivable/OTC 24-28k 28-32k 32k + 23-26k 26-30k 30k + Accounts Payable/P2P 24-28k 28-32k 32k + 23-26k 26-30k 30k + Accounts Payable Team Leader 35-40k 38-45k 40k + 30-35k 35-40k 40k + Accounts Payable Manager 40-45k 45-55k 55k + 40-45k 45-48k 48k + Credit Control 22-30k 30-35k 35k + 25-28k 28-30k 30k + Credit Control/AR Team Leader 30-40k 40-45k 45k + 32-35k 35-38k 38k + Credit Manager/AR Manager 45-50k 50-60k 60k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Payroll Administrator 25-30k 30-35k 35k + 23-27k 27-30k 30k + Payroll Manager 38-40k 40-45k 45k + 32-35k 35-40k 40k + Part Qualified/Assistant GL Accountant 28-35k 33-40k 40k + 25-30k 30-35k 35k + Finalist 35-42k 42-45k 45k + 35-40k 40-45k 45k + Financial/GL/R2R Accountant 45-50k 50-60k 60k + 38-42k 42-50k 50k + Treasury Accountant 48-52k 50-55k 55k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Treasury Manager 55-60k 60-70k 70k + 50-55k 55-60k 65k + Revenue Accountant 40-50k 45-55k 55k + 35-40k 40-45k 45k + Revenue Manager 65-70k 70-75k 75k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + Regulatory Accountant 48-52k 50-60k 60k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Regulatory Manager 65-70k 70-80k 80k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + Statutory Accountant 48-52k 52-60k + 60k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Cost Accountant 45-50k 50-60k 60k + 35-40k 40-45k 45k + Management Accountant 45-52k 50-57k 60k + 35-40k 40-45k 45k + Fixed Assets Accountant 45-52k 50-57k 55k + 35-40k 40-45k 45k + Systems Accountant 52-57k 55-65k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Process Improvement Senior (LEAN, SOX, Six Sigma etc.) 65-70k 70-75k 75k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + Process Improvement Manager (LEAN, SOX, Six Sigma etc.) 85-100k 100-120k 120k + 75-80k 85-95k 100k + Financial Analyst 45-55k 55-65k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 55k + FP&A Manager 60-70k 70-80k 80k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + VAT Accountant 40-50k 50-60k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + VAT Manager 60-65k 65-75k 75k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + Tax Accountant 45-55k 55-60k 60k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Tax Manager 65-75k 75-80k 80k + 60-65k 65-70k 70k + Sigmar Recruitment | Salary Guide Ireland 2016 | www.sigmar.ie DUBLIN 6 REST OF IRELAND 1-2 Years Exp 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp 1-2 Years Exp 3-5 Years Exp 5 Years+ Exp Internal Auditor 45-55k 55-65k 65k + 40-45k 45-50k 50k + Internal Audit Manager 70-80k 80-90k 90k + 65-70k 70-75k 75k + Head of Audit & Compliance 85-95k 95-105k 105k + 70-75k 75-80k 80-85k Finance Manager 60-68k 68-75k 75k + 55-60k 60-65k 65k + Financial Controller 70-85k 85-95k 95k + 65-70k 70-75k 75k + Head of Finance/Financial Director 80-100k 100-115k 115k + 75-80k 85-95k 100k + CFO 100-130k 130-160k 160k + 85-100k 100-120k 120k + In Demand for 2016 Hot Jobs Audit Senior Tax Senior Risk Consultant Financial Process Improvement Advisor Top Skills External Audit Skills (FS/Industry PLC) Internal Audit Skills (FS/Industry PLC) Domestic/International Tax Skills Leadership/Management Experience Practice “Salaries in practice rising in 2016 to retain skills.” The accountancy practice market continued to expand in 2015, a trend that we see continuing. Whilst the Big 4 and Top 10 firms have been recruiting at noticeable levels for a number of years, 2015 saw a significant resurgence of small and medium accounting firms hiring again. There is no doubt that this will continue throughout 2016. During 2016 there will be a continued demand for experienced auditors, tax consultants and accounting advisors. This will not decrease due to the demands from the client base of the accounting firms. What will change however will be the salaries offered in practice as the firms battle to attract and retain talent. There is both a threat from rival firms and jobs in industry tempting the practice workforce away from the sector. Salaries in 2016 Excluding the trainee level which is influenced by training contracts, we expect qualified accountants across the major practice functions to experience salary growth of around 5-7% in 2016. Senior level candidates may experience a bigger shift in market rates due to the limited supply of highly experienced practice accountants available. Top Tip For 2016 In addition to detailing your academic achievements on your CV, we strongly recommend that you detail all client engagements with information on client turnover or specific client responsibilities that you undertook. This will help you sell yourself to potential employers and allow them to picture you working for them. Companies have introduced innovative ways to attract and retain talent including offering part-time positions (even in funds), opening satellite offices and increasing benefit portfolios. In order to adapt to the increasingly changeable financial services landscape progressive candidates will need to invest in themselves through education to attain relevant certifications in order to broaden their career options. Whether that’s going back to do a quantitative or IT focused masters, working towards PMP certification or other industry standard qualifications – further education and certification will play a huge part in determining candidate employability success. 9 Thoughts on the Market 2016 We approached 2015 with huge optimism and the year did not disappoint as the banking and financial services industry as a whole in Ireland moved from a period of recovery to one of growth. It was the year in which the government launched the International Financial Services Strategy to create 10,000 new jobs in the sector by 2020 and now with over 200 Irish owned and a further 200 foreign multinational IFS companies across banking, funds, asset management, aircraft leasing, insurance and re-insurance based here in Ireland, the sector is now recognised as operating at the highest level on the global financial services stage. Confidence within the industry has grown significantly in the last year with a plethora of company expansions and even start-ups establishing operations here. Overall 2015 was a very positive year for financial services but will that change in 2016? The outlook is that the market supply of talent will continue tightening in 2016. The good news for candidates is that they will have multiple offers and counter offers to think over but it presents a huge challenge for businesses who want to hold on to and expand their teams further. In order to meet these challenges head on businesses will need to truly understand the motivations of talent for both recruitment and retention purposes. Looking into work life balance, career advancement and location for talent will be as or even more important than remuneration. There has been a significant increase in roles requiring candidates to work shift hours either early mornings or late evenings in order to accommodate various financial markets. This trend looks set to continue into 2016 and the challenge will be to educate the talent market on the value proposition of working non-traditional hours. Never miss a banking job Follow us @SigmarFinancial Interim talent solutions such as offering contracts and temporary assignments will continue to be an effective way for organisations to fulfil many of their variable requirements as the market for permanent talent sets to tighten in 2016. Probably the biggest challenge ahead for 2016 onwards in financial services will be the one presented by the emergence of FinTech into the market place. Something significant has been happening at the intersection of finance and technology in the last year which quite literally could change the entire face of the financial services landscape. Going into 2016 there are already 30 Irish start-ups operating in various areas of FinTech and the expectation is that this will multiply. Silicon Valley is truly taking on Wall Street in what could prove to be an epic battle and the effects of this will no doubt be seen in the financial services industry in Ireland throughout 2016 and onwards. Attracting top graduates in 2016 to large financial services institutions as opposed to smaller global technology companies working in the financial services space may prove an interesting challenge for the industry. Retaining talent in financial services as opposed to losing them to FinTech may become an even greater headache. It will be interesting to see how financial services companies adapt to the inevitable impact of FinTech. On a final note while we all want to look to 2016 with optimism for the financial services market in Ireland, it is important to keep in mind that the impact of announcements in the latter half of 2015 of global job culls by some of the larger financial services institutions has yet to be seen on our shores. One thing for sure is that 2016 will be a very interesting year. Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. Construction skills are once again in demand as the supply of quantity surveyors, project managers and senior engineers tightens.” Project management skills and relevant certification Mechanical, electrical building services and structural design skills Site professionals who are aware of recent changes in the building codes Salaries in 2016 Salaries for all construction positions should rise, although some at a moderate rate. Quantity surveyors and design engineers with 4-5 years’ experience are likely to see pronounced rises due to demand and supply at this level. Top Tips For 2016 For junior engineers, excellent MS Excel, MS Project and Primavera skills are all seen as very relevant whether you are looking at project management, planning or quantity surveying. Also companies increasingly appreciate candidates who understand programmes, commercial aspects and how projects fit together in a practical way. For graduates or ex-tradespeople looking to become more involved in engineering/project management, pursue third level education to the highest level to give yourself more options (i.e. a level 8 engineering degree will give more options than an ordinary degree/diploma). Most contractors who are now hiring express a preference for degree level. 17 Thoughts on the Market 2016 At present, the construction market looks in an increasingly healthy state compared to the significant fall off in activity at the end of the last decade. There is an increased level of activity in both the commercial and residential building sectors, with both larger and medium sized companies benefiting. We are seeing both design and site professionals in demand and the increased level of jobs has also had a positive effect on opportunities for tradespeople such as carpenters and electricians. The upsurge in activity has meant that contracting and consulting companies are facing challenges however in attracting staff in certain areas, particularly intermediate (3-5 years’ experience) level engineers and surveyors, as many in this bracket relocated to the UK or further afield in countries such as Australia. CONSTRUCTION SERVICES Architectural Technician Certainly more jobseekers who emigrated are starting to look at Ireland closely again, and Sigmar were able to successfully place several candidates relocating back to Ireland in 2015. However despite salary increases in Ireland, salary levels in the UK plus exchange rate differentials provide significant competition. Degree qualified professionals are more in demand with particular focus on process engineering, production engineering and automation engineering.” Salaries in 2016 Top Tip For 2016 Overall salaries have stayed on par with last year. We would expect this to continue with two exceptions: automation engineers and process engineers which have each risen around 10% across all experience levels. Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) are in vogue and have become the cornerstone of good manufacturing processes in pharmaceutical, medical device and automotive companies. Indigenous Irish manufacturing embraced LSS over the past three years but the available talent in this area is limited, therefore gaining Lean and Six Sigma green or black belt qualification gives candidates an strong edge when applying for jobs. 20 Thoughts on the Market 2016 Indigenous manufacturing has been slower to catch the “growth” bug than pharmaceutical or medical device companies, however 2015 saw change with traditional manufacturing engaging in or planning for long term growth. Many companies who downsized between 2008-2013 are now seeing increased new roles in production, maintenance, operations, quality and R&D. In food manufacturing for agri-business the beef trade agreement with the USA and the abolition of milk quotas have facilitated, and will continue to facilitate, growth in the sector. According to the Food & Drinks Industry (FDI) website this food category is responsible, directly and indirectly, for 230,000 jobs and €26bn in turnover. This level of activity has increased competition and companies are responding by growing their science functions to understand how better to maximise the benefits of their ingredient to the final product. The outcomes of this research and development should lead to greater production and in turn new capital projects needing new employees in 2016. Heavier engineering companies are receiving new orders for bespoke parts. Renewable engineering companies, in particular, are looking at ways to improve their equipment for efficiency reasons and use specialists (Irish bespoke engineering companies) to help with such changes. This has led to a pick-up of over 200% in R&D and mechanical design engineers. Integrating said products with automated solutions is driving the demand for skilled SCADA and PLC design engineers and the market is still struggling to marry demand with supply but good inroads are being made. Overall the evidence of the improving market of 2015 indicates a strong demand for talent in 2016 across all engineering disciplines. Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. In the non-agri food sector in 2015 the focus was on lean transformation and continuous improvement projects to allow for greater yield across the business. Where companies are continuing these processes, results are very positive. Companies from bakery and food services are growing off the back of these changes with a few new builds for expansion being announced in 2016. All salaries taken as annual in Euros, based on working in Ireland. Bonus/car allowance not included. Figures are based on current market rates. Typically for HR roles the technology companies pay the highest salaries with candidates with 1 years + experience able to demand €35k upwards. Gaining multi-industry or multi-regional experience will mean that you have more marketable experience when you do look for a move or promotion. 23 Thoughts on the Market 2016 2015 has been an exciting year for HR with movement at its highest level since 2009. In the past year we have seen increase in demand for talent acquisition roles and HRIS analytical roles indicating two big trends – growth and retention. We have experienced significant growth in the area of HRIS or HR analytics with more organisations realising the true value of deciphering their own information to assist with insight driven decision making. Candidates in these areas are highly sought after and it is the area where we have seen the largest increase in salary levels, up to 20% in some cases. This is set to continue throughout 2016. Sigmar has seen record numbers of new start-up FDI firms coming to Ireland with requirements for senior HR staff. The most sought after background for these companies is candidates working within global environments with large matrix reporting structures, talent development, employee engagement and talent acquisition. With today’s workforce being more agile than ever, companies starting up in the market need experienced HR staff to attract talent and keep it. Training and development has also seen healthy activity with roles developing from traditional instructor-based training to more blended e-learning solutions with increased accreditation of internal courses by external bodies. Primary growth sectors for HR are within financial services, manufacturing, retail and technology. Demand for specialist HR roles have seen the largest increase with HR business partner and HR management roles remaining largely consistent. We have seen some rise in HR director level roles with typical processes taking up to 6 months from start to finish. HR in the regions has seen some growth but not on the same scale as the Dublin region. HR professionals with experience in MNCs and working with very diverse/multi-cultural workforces are the most sought after. The regions are also experiencing a demand for contract recruitment roles. Typically for HR roles the technology companies pay the highest salaries with candidates with more than 1 years experience able to demand €35,000 upwards. However securing a job within one of these prestigious companies is no easy feat with candidates expected to go through extensive rounds of interview. The graduate space is very competitive and as a candidate it can be very hard to break into without completing some sort of internship or gaining work experience first. Candidates with a HR degree and less than 2 years experience might expect anywhere between €20,000 and €28,000 depending on where they are in the country. Senior level salaries are starting to recover having taken a hit in recent years. For management level roles we have seen salaries rise by €10,000 – €20,000 over the last year. Most importantly candidates are gaining in confidence and are more likely to demand a higher salary for a new role then accept whatever is on offer. At senior manager/director level there are certainly more vacancies then last year but the market is candidate rich so the companies have their pick of candidates for these roles. Typically the more senior the role the less urgency the company have with these processes, which are regularly being drawn out over a number of months. 2016 is set to be a great year for the HR manager. Salaries are on the increase again along with benefit packages. Flexible working arrangements are becoming more common as people are living further away or returning from maternity leave. A more stable economic platform has provided brokers, insurers, SMEs and larger organisations the opportunity to consolidate and grow their business for the first time in a number of years.” Top Tip For 2016 Salaries in 2016 In order to attract top talent in the market, businesses have offered between a 4% and 8% increase on basic salaries along with very competitive bonus and benefits packages. The demand for relevant professional accreditations has remained high due to the increase in regulation within the industry. For customer-facing roles the APA is a minimum requirement with many employers favouring candidates with the CIP. More advanced qualifications such as the DLDU in the life assurance space and ACII in general insurance are becoming core requirements for more senior level positions. We envisage this trend continuing into 2016. . 26 Thoughts on the Market 2016 Pension Admin - Within the life assurance market there has been a significant increase in demand for pension administrators and consultants, particularly with the larger brokers in the market. Specifically pension administrators with end-to-end experience in either DB or DC schemes are being highly sought after. With the phase-out of many defined benefit schemes, there has been higher demand for individuals specific to this. Underwriting - Medical underwriters, especially with ACII and DLDU qualifications, have been in high demand with leading players in the market. There has been flexibility in terms of roles offered on a part-time basis in order to attract talent. Business Admin - There has been steady demand for high quality administrators to deal with new and existing business. Many of these roles have been offered on a contract basis with the view of permanency upon completion. Claims - We are now seeing a closer shift towards the equilibrium of the supply and demand of claims professionals. Some of the larger insurance firms are growing their claims teams with a marked requirement for technical claims specialists. Actuaries - As always both qualified and part-qualified actuary candidates are in high demand. Apart from the general and life assurance businesses we have seen strong demand for qualified actuaries with consultancy organisations who are continuing to build their actuarial service offering. This is a trend we expect to continue throughout 2016. Data Analytics - Data analytics and data management has become a significant feature for insurance businesses in 2015. The insights which can be gained and business decisions made from having mechanisms to extract data, can no longer be overlooked. There has been a significant increase in demand for individuals with mathematical/computer science backgrounds capable of extracting data, working with it and putting it into report form for management review. We see this as a major growth area for 2016. Underwriting - Demand for underwriters across commercial and personal lines has remained steady. Brokers - There has been an increased demand for strong broker development candidates, keeping in line with the resurgence of the broker market. Individuals with strong account management and sales experience have seen a steady increase in opportunities available. With many brokers growing their head counts for the first time in a number of years, they are looking for candidates who can spot opportunity and help develop business. Individuals with a proven track record of this have been found to command higher salaries. Heaviest demand has been placed on commercial account execs from both international and SME brokers. In the last three years over 17,500 jobs have been announced by technology companies and the sector is responsible for 40% of our national exports (€72 billion per annum).” Salaries in 2016 We have seen an overall uplift for the salaries in the IT sector, with disciplines such as Scala developer, Python developer, Java developer, UX designer and mobile developer in particular seeing an increase. Other disciplines experiencing increases to a slightly lesser extent include software development manager, database developer/DBA and QA managers/senior QAs. Top Tip For 2016 Ensure your CV is written clearly and concisely and appeals to both a technical hiring manager as well as a non-technical HR team. Don’t forget to add in relevant projects outside the work environment as this shows a genuine interest in that area. 30 Thoughts on the Market 2016 2015 was an exciting year for the ICT market in Ireland, with further growth across all verticals and investment in ICT teams across companies of all sizes from multinationals to SMEs, and in both indigenous and international start-ups relocating to Ireland. This looks set to continue in 2016 with over 85% of employers surveyed expecting to invest further in IT expertise. Within the Irish context the IT sector is one of the main areas of employment growth, with competition for skilled and experienced candidates very strong. Candidates from all over Europe are recognising Ireland more and more as an IT hub, attracting talent from Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Hungary, Croatia and further afield. With Dublin now a major centre in Europe for global tech companies this has driven a growth of start-ups developing innovative solutions and apps. Small and medium sized ICT companies are also performing extremely well. Given Ireland’s location, companies often base infrastructure teams in Ireland to provide support globally also. The sector continues to embrace new technologies quickly, and we expect to see further activity in cloud, mobile, big data and virtualisation. Companies based in Ireland have evolved and adapted to an ever more globalised marketplace for their products, with web-based services an area of major growth. As a result there remains a skills shortage in Ireland for software developers in particular, with Java, .NET, Python, Ruby on Rails and Scala. Roles with a crossover of this knowledge, aligned with strong business skills, continue to increase in popularity also. A significant trend emerging towards the latter half of 2015 was a growth in counter-offers, which are likely to drive salaries up in 2016. Top Tip For 2016 Get qualified – otherwise you will hit a glass ceiling in terms of professional development. “We have witnessed a sustained increase in demand across in house and practice as confidence has improved and companies start to grow.” 2015 was a positive year for the legal industry with areas such as funds, corporate banking, commercial property and IP being at the core of this. Salary levels improved for mid-senior level appointments during 2015 and with demand increasing across certain sectors such as technology and IP we can expect further improvements in 2016. We witnessed a sustained increase in demand across private practice and in-house throughout the year as confidence returned to the market. This allowed legal professionals with specialist skill sets to secure new roles across a number of different sectors. As the market improved, so did competition for high-calibre candidates, with sign-on bonuses and counteroffers featuring regularly throughout 2015. Throughout the year, professionals with one to five years’ postqualified experience were highly sought-after in a number of areas, including funds and regulation, banking, commercial property and commercial litigation. Those with backgrounds in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions were also in demand, while Central Bank of Ireland regulations stimulated demand for in-house lawyers within financial services. We also witnessed a return to hiring within listings. 38 In house There was an increased demand for legal professionals for in-house roles, with organisations seeing the commercial benefit of bulking up their in-house legal team. The financial services sector in particular accounted for the majority of demand. Funds lawyers and commercial contracts solicitors were highly sought after and across all industries there was an increase in demand for compliance professionals. These trends look set to continue throughout 2016. Mergers and acquisitions are going strong in the current market and demand for lawyers with skills in this area will be strong in 2016. We have seen a huge increase in the demand for contract solicitors across all the major industries and for short term high level expertise. Hiring managers are advised to maintain momentum within the recruitment process in order to secure top talent. Practice 2015 saw further improvements within practice. The returning confidence in the Irish market resulted in increased hiring, particularly within the Big 10 law firms for both solicitors and company secretaries. While solicitors with litigation and banking experience remained in strong demand, a welcome return to the market is the demand for solicitors with property and conveyancing experience. We expect this to continue in 2016, along with further demand for those with technology and IP experience. These improvements in outlook bode well for newly qualified solicitors as firms look set to retain more graduates post qualification and take on more trainees in 2016. Following the large cuts in graduate recruitment in 2009 and 2010, coupled with people choosing to emigrate and travel upon completion of training contracts, there has been a noticeable decrease in the current availability of newly qualified lawyers. Due to this, graduate level hiring has increased over the course of 2015 to match and in some instances exceed prerecession levels. We would expect to see this trend continue into 2016. The small to medium sized practices have been recruiting throughout the last year and are expanding for the first time in 5 years. When hiring top talent, employers will need to highlight clear career progression plans. We have also noticed employers re-introducing counter offers over the past 12 months to retain exceptional talent that is in short supply. Looking ahead, we expect companies to continue focusing their recruitment efforts on candidates with one to five years’ post-qualified experience. We anticipate senior-level opportunities will become available to legal professionals with a strong client following and/or Magic/Silver Circle experience. In-house positions are also likely to open up as companies try to reduce their external legal costs. In 2015, salaries have increased by 3-5% with some increases of 5-10% for top talent with unique skill sets in the niche areas. However the short supply of top talent and the lure of candidates to make the move across to industry will require employers to offer more competitive benefit packages in 2016, including higher base salaries and bonus structures. Retention measures and counter-offers are likely to drive remuneration up in 2016 as market conditions continue to favour legal professionals. Compliance Across domestic, international and investments there has been a focus on compliance and risk departments within investment banking, AIFMD, FATCA, Form PF and MiFID. There has been a rise in roles in the registration and listing areas and candidates with this background will continue to be in demand through 2016. Within risk there has been growth for operational risk candidates in particular candidates with exposure to business continuity management and disaster recovery. The job market was buoyant for compliance professionals in 2015, with increased demand across fund management, insurance and professional services. Candidate confidence continued to grow throughout the year, leading to increased movement in the jobs market. Hiring activity was stimulated by new regulation, with many organisations looking to recruit permanent and contract staff to help meet the requirements of specific directives. 39 Demand was strong for professionals with experience in consumer regulation, prudential regulation, and MiFID, AIFMD, AML and data privacy. AML regulation also led to increased hiring for contract and temporary candidates, while more companies looked to fill hybrid roles combining compliance with operational risk or legal skills, or data privacy with information security. Speed to market will be extremely crucial when hiring in 2016 as top talent will go off the market very quickly and will have the pick of opportunities from prospective employers within compliance. Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. Regulation will continue to influence recruitment activity in 2016, and candidates that can adapt to measures such as the EU Data Protection Directive, MiFID II and the new Money Laundering Directive will be highly sought-after. Skilled professionals will be challenging to source, in particular those with prudential experience, while junior to mid-level compliance professionals will be popular hiring options as companies focus on succession planning. The main thing is to not let your experience and education get dated. Keep upskilling in whatever way you can. If you are already working in the industry then try to do as many courses as your company will let you do or pay for. For those trying to break into the market, the key is standing out. Many people have a degree in science or engineering, but not everyone will have work experience with an actual pharmaceutical company, or have a GMP/GLP course done in the NIBRT centre. Learn to stand out. 42 Thoughts on the Market 2016 The biggest news in the industry in Ireland is the recent news of the Pfizer/Allergan buyout. It’s the biggest takeover in the history of the global pharmaceutical industry and also the largest valued merger in 2015 ($160 Billion). Pfizer is now the largest pharmaceutical company in the world and their HQ is based in Ireland. As long as Ireland can keep at the centre of the blockbuster drug manufacturing, then the future is bright. 6 of the top 10 drugs in the world right now are manufactured right here, in Ireland. Examples of these would be the active ingredient for Pfizer’s drug Viagra, which is produced in Cork. Another example, Lantus was the 2nd biggest selling drug of 2014, which is made in Sanofi’s site in Waterford. This year alone, Ireland was the 7th largest pharmaceutical and medicine exporter in the world, with a value of €39 billion. Added to this, 9 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies have plants in Ireland, with a total of 25,000 people employed around the country. Also, the move into biotech creates a bright future for jobs in the industry. The new products that companies are developing are complex and although the corporate tax rate is seen by a lot of people as the main reason these companies set-up/invest in new facilities or stay here, it is also because we have the talent to produce and develop new products. The life sciences industry in Ireland in on the up and up and this is evident in the large scale transition into biopharma manufacturing. In the last decade, there has been a mass expansion by pharmaceutical companies into this area, with more forecasted for 2016. A perfect example of this, is BMS’s €900 million facility being constructed out near Blanchardstown, which they hope will employ 500+ people. Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. On a global scale the industry is also growing. With aging populations globally there is increased demand for pharmaceutical products. It is estimated that the global prescription market will be worth €800 billion and over €1 trillion by 2020. SMEs and start-ups are offering various incentives, bonuses and benefits packages to rival multinationals who have traditionally been able to pay slightly more. Include as much technical information as you can on your CV including buzzwords such as “Six Sigma”, “Lean”, “Continuous Improvement”, “Problem Solving”, “GMP”. It’s imperative to view the job spec beforehand and tailor your CV accordingly. 48 Thoughts on the Market 2016 Statistics from IDA Ireland report that “Ireland’s MedTech sector has become one of the leading clusters for medical device products globally. Exports of medical device products now represent 8% of Ireland’s total merchandise exports”. The facts are there: 33% of the world’s contact lenses are manufactured in Ireland, as are 50% of the ventilators used in acute hospitals worldwide. Additionally, 30 million people with diabetes used Irish made injectable devices. Europe’s hub of medical device companies are based in Galway. Galway employs “one third of the country’s 25,000 medical device employees and the West accounts for 39% of regional distribution of medical devices” and Galway is globally renowned for its specialisation in coronary devices (Medical Device Sectoral Overview). The medical device engineering market is growing exponentially in the West of Ireland at the moment. It is the first time in a long time that we are seeing more engineering positions becoming available, than people freely ready to move positions in order to take them. It goes without saying that these are very exciting times for the medical device industry. The West of Ireland is notorious for holding some of the largest global medical technology companies in the world and subsequently, some of the most talented engineers are located there. With a plethora of prestigious and globally-renowned medical device companies to choose from, all located relatively close to each other, engineers are under no pressure to rush into a position without a big incentive to do so. Competition is thriving and this is where strategic thinking is coming into play regarding attracting employees. We are noticing more attractive benefits, higher salaries, and much more flexibility from employers for the right candidate. Never miss a medical devices job Follow us @SigmarTechnical Medical device start-ups are proving an attractive option for engineers in big multinationals as they get to really make a mark on a company, using the skills they have learned. We are also seeing continuing demand for manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, R&D engineers, process development engineers, and polymer engineers. This is most evident with senior multilingual roles where there is a huge demand for experienced candidates. We have also seen a marginal increase for entry and junior level roles. The phrase “I heard the market is picking up” is becoming more and more common as people who previously stayed put to weather the storms of the recession begin looking at the opportunities of their own volition. Clients have woken up to this fact as well and have reviewed their hiring policies to take advantage of the increased volume of people looking for new positions. This creates a more competitive market which has pros and cons on both sides of the fence.” Top Tip For 2016 Do your research on each company to make sure they see how interested you are. 55 Thoughts on the Market 2016 IT sales is the area that continues to grow as more and more companies enter the Irish market looking to hire “inside sales” people. Typically they are technology or software companies targeting UK and European clients and in a lot of cases desire languages and qualifications. The type of person in the highest demand is an individual with 1-2 years successful sales experience. This is a feature across multiple industries as companies create roles previously closed in the recession. They are seeking to bring new ideas and a fresh approach in a lot of cases and see the junior sales role as a chance to do that. If you are ready to begin a career in sales then 2016 could be the year for you! Overall we hope to see marginal growth across most industries with IT continuing to lead the way. As a final point I would add that education is asked about by an increasing number of companies who expect a lot of candidates to have degrees and masters. It’s more important in technical areas such as IT, engineering and pharmaceutical but no matter your level be prepared for the conversation! Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. On the FMCG side there has been small growth at mid tier level such as key accounts and territory sales. We expect this to continue and potentially create demand for junior sales roles as a result of them. Other areas that we expect to grow are technical roles such as sales engineers and technical sales consultants in engineering and construction for experienced people. There was some growth in 2015 and in the early part of 2016 we expect another surge. Supply Chain courses such as the IIPMM now a requirement for jobs with some employers. 58 Thoughts on the Market 2016 2015 was a great year for the Supply Chain industry with a significant increase in the number of roles on the market, particularly in the second half of the year. What is interesting is the variety of roles coming through from warehouse managers, site general managers to procurement specialists and directors, showing that the market is improving across the board and not just in one particular area. Once again we have seen a demand for ocean and air freight candidates with a minimum of 3 plus years’ experience but have found that there is a lack of candidates in the industry and these roles have proved difficult to source candidates for. Get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected] or call us on +353 1 4744600. In the second half of last year we saw a large increase in the demand for purchasing and procurement professionals at all levels from buyers, commodity specialists to procurement managers across a wide range of industries including financial services, medical devices and manufacturing.
