Whether you are starting a new garden from a fresh plot or are developing an existing garden you have
acquired it will always involve a certain amount of care. To help you be as efficient as possible in the garden

maintenance areas to consider: mowing; edging;
thatching; aeration; weeding; and fertilisation;
and they don’t all need to be labour intensive.
Mowing
Spring time is when most gardeners turn to their lawn to begin the regular task of mowing. WOLF-Garten

Thatching
Thatch is a fibrous layer which forms on the surface of many lawns. When this layer is an inch or more in
thickness a semi-waterproof layer is created which prevents the water flowing into the soil and to the roots.
In Autumn the effects are more serious as the thatch prevents the thickening of the turf and creates a
constant wet organic blanket which sits on top of the grass and encourages disease.

Weeding
Weeds in the lawn can be very difficult to remove,
especially dandelions that can have a 1” taproot.
Simply pulling the weed often results in the
taproot being fractured allowing it to re-grow.
A weed extractor is a clever tool head that can be
attached to a multi-change® handle then simply
pushed into the ground, twisted and pulled out,
the weed with root will be removed with this easy
action. A weeding knife can also be used on tough
weeds with the footrest providing extra leverage.
To prevent the formation of thatch, regular raking and brushing will remove
the debris that builds up to create the problem. The key time for de-thatching
is Autumn; use a rake to gather leaves and other debris off the grass. You can
use a lawn rake to break up small amounts of thatch but occasionally if it is
very thick you will need to scarify instead. You
can manually scarify using a multi-change®
moss removal rake tool head which will bite into
the lawn to lift up the thatch. Alternatively, if you
have a large lawn an electric scarifier will be very
effective in removing the organic matter quickly. After de-thatching, a lawn can
look bad temporarily but will recover rapidly with new shoots growing to
produce a thickened healthier lawn in Spring.

Aerating is another task that can be required annually, particularly in clay soils and high impacted ground.
The key benefit to aeration is to loosen compacted soils to allow the grass roots to penetrate deeper into

Choosing Pruners
Choosing Loppers
There are so many pruners how do you know which one to use?
Well, like loppers that all depends on the cutting job in hand, is it
trimming new stems or tougher woodier growth.
A simple rule for choosing the right lopper is bypass for younger branches and
anvil for hardier or dead wood. It is especially important to ensure you use the
right tool for the job when cutting greener branches as the bypass lopper allows
for a more accurate cut without crushing the branch.
Bypass pruners work on a scissor like cutting action with one blade
‘bypassing’ the other. They are ideal for cutting growth which is younger
(up to 2 years old) as they provide a very clean cut, essential for
maintaining a healthy plant or shrub. Little pressure is required in
pruning of this nature so the pruners themselves are light in weight.
Bypass pruners can still be used on older cuttings but a little more
effort will be required by the user.

Be sure that the lopper will be able to make one clean cut, otherwise you cause
multiple wounds to the branch that can attract insects or disease more quickly.
The longer the handles the more leverage you will have when cutting, making
it easier to achieve a clean cut. Telescopic handles are available in the
WOLF-Garten range to reach taller bushes.
For older thicker stems it is best to use an anvil pruner which will reduce
the strain on the wrist and hand. With anvil pruners the blade closes
against a softer metal on the lower jaw, this does not produce such a
clean cut as a bypass pruner which is why it is not suited to young stems
but more to older wood where the cleanliness of the cut is not so
important. Always consider the density of the wood you are cutting and
ensure you have the right tool for the job, you may want to upgrade the
cutting tool to avoid unnecessary strain on the hand.

Other aspects to consider when choosing your lopper is a good non slip hand
grip, light in weight for easy manoeuvrability and the cutting diameter to ensure
it is suitable for the branches you will be tackling. It is also advisable to have a
tree saw available when cutting a branch in case it becomes too difficult for
the lopper, you can view our multi-change® tree care on page 18 for more
information on alternative cutting products.
