Welcome by the President
It’s a great honor to invite you to the 13th ICRS World congress in
Sorrento – the world-famous beautiful city looking over the azure waters to the island of Ischia, Capri and the Bay of Naples.
The ICRS is a unique forum to discuss multidisciplinary topics related to cartilage research and therapy including basic
science, clinical investigation and industrial development.
Our World Congress, held every 18 months, is especially important to accomplish our mission by providing a unique chance to meet our colleagues
with the same interest and learn from the world’s top experts in this field. In
addition, it may be a special experience to get acquaintance with new friends
from all over the world and share productive and meaningful time over discussions on the common topics of interest. In addition, the combination of
such academic activities with beautiful moments of cultural and social activities, this could be an unforgettable memory for each participant. The ICRS
wants to provide such special opportunity to all of you.
Our society is young and friendly and keen to welcome not only our members
but also those who have rarely or never attended our congresses. Please come
along and find out what we are all about. In recent years, we have taken special
respect for integrating scientific and clinical aspects of each session so that we
can all learn from each other. In this regard, our scientific committee lead by
William Bugbee and Henning Madry has done a fantastic job in putting together
the program, while the local organizing committee lead by Stefano Della Villa,
Donato Rosa, Alberto Gobbi and Elizaveta Kon are working closely with Stephan
Seiler at ICRS office to make sure the venue in beautiful Sorrento as well as the
local culture and entertainment of Southern Italy are the best for you.
Please mark your calendars for the 13th ICRS World Congress. Feel at home in our
Society and join us at this great venue and enjoy a wonderful academic and cultural experience. I look forward to meeting you in Sorrento in September 2016.
Norimasa Nakamura
ICRS President 2015–2016
Welcome by the Local Committee
We are so happy to welcome you to the magical atmosphere of
Sorrento. We will only be a few miles from Naples’ International Airport and Capri, the island where Emperor Tiberius decided to transfer his palace to better guide the Roman Empire at the time of Jesus
Christ’s life.
Driving in Naples can be considered an extreme sport, in that here
the laws of the road such as traffic signals appear to be optional, rules written as guidelines; but this is Naples and it should be embraced with the exuberance of a child let
loose in a sweet shop. Nevertheless, do not panic, even if you feel you want to scream
‘brake, brake!’ because, although it may not seem like it, they do, incredible, really
know what they are doing.
Sorrento, what a sight! One of the most beautiful places on earth sitting above black
volcanic cliffs, bordered by chalk mountains, the most visited place in Southern Italy,
especially by the English which means that the language is spoken pretty good! We
personally have a special relationship with the Sorrento peninsula, with one of us enjoying his honeymoon here and who cannot forget the natural beauty of the coast, the
smell of the jasmine, the quality of the food, and the unique hospitality of the people.
From this point of view, deciding to organise a scientific event in Sorrento is quite a risk.
It is such a lovely place that despite an innovative scientific programme, the attendees
could escape from the conference room to enjoy the beauty outside. As the Local Organising Committee, we will try to prevent, this by offering you the right combination of
science, medicine and pleasure. If Tiberius was able, from this area, to run the Roman
Empire for twenty years, we will try to do the same for the five days of Conference! It is
just a matter of balance.
During the day, we will find the right balance. Waking up early in the morning, we can
enjoy an al fresco breakfast and a walk around the conference venue, taking in the
spectacular view of the coastline. Then we move to the scientific venue, to enjoy the
teaching of experts, the innovations in new technologies, the enthusiasm, and the
energy of the young researchers during the free papers sessions. Different stimuli, from
the richness of our scientific society, to a multidisciplinary group of people, sharing the
same passion for cartilage tissue. Then coffee breaks and lunches will offer us the opportunity to enjoy again the hospitality of the Sorrento peninsula, where also a simple
coffee tastes different. The afternoon and evening scientific sessions, and a visits to the
technical exhibitions, will complete the professional part of the day.
We cannot tell you anything about the dinners, because it will be a surprise. We can
just anticipate that they will be joyful moments that take the best from our community:
learning from each other, enjoying friendship, and trying to build together a healthier
world thanks to our study, our experience and our passion.
On behalf of the local organizing committee
Stefano Della Villa, Congress Chair 2016

Welcome by the Scientific Programme Committee
On behalf of the Scientific Programme Committee, we invite everyone to join us in Sorrento
Italy on September 24–27 2016.
The scientific program reflects the dynamic nature cartilage injury and repair, the growing importance of the ICRS as a preeminent organization and the tremendous efforts of its members in both basic scientific and clinical
endeavors. The program builds on the overwhelming popularity and success of
previous ICRS meetings and reflects our desire for scientists and clinicians to collaborate and share ideas.
The program includes updates on current clinical strategies for repair of hyaline
and meniscal cartilage, as well as emerging trends and controversies such as the
use of stems cells, growth factors and gene therapy. Sessions on the osteochondral
unit, synovial joint pathophysiology and osteoarthritis reflect the growing recognition of the role of subchondral bone behavior and the synovial joint as an organ.
Cartilage repair in specific anatomic situations such as the patellofemoral joint,
ankle, hip and upper extremity will be addressed. Practical “how to” sessions will
cover fundamentals of basic research including study design and peer reviewed
publication as well as advice on patient evaluation and surgical technique from
leading experts. We will also feature the popular “mini battlefield” format where
controversial questions will be passionately debated.
We are confident this congress will allow everyone to enjoy a programme that truly
reflects the “state of the art” in science and clinical practice cartilage repair.
We look forward to seeing you in Sorrento, Italy.

Call for Abstracts – Authors’ Information
Call for Abstracts
The scientific programme committee is
pleased to invite all authors wishing to
present a paper or a poster at the ICRS
2016 to submit their abstracts latest until April 10, 2016. No extension of this
deadline will be possible. The overall
best rated Abstract and Posters will be
awarded by the Society.
• Podium Presentations
Free papers related to all topics in cartilage repair will be presented during 16
free paper sessions. Speaking time is 7
minutes plus 3 minutes for discussion.
The speaking time must strictly be observed by the presenters. If an abstract
is accepted as an oral presentation,
presenters must speak in fluent English
and be prepared to answer questions
from the audience and moderators. All
session rooms are equipped with networked computer projection. Presen
ters are requested to bring their Power
Point presentation (Windows 10, XP or
Windows 7) on a CD-ROM or USB stick
and to check-in at the Preview Center
3 hours prior to their presentation. Detailed information will be sent to the presenters on time.
• Electronic Posters
One of the main benefits of an electronic
poster exhibit is the post-congress availability of the posters for many years in
the ICRS member’s area. Our scientific
cartilage knowledge database is fully
searchable by title, poster ID, authors,
full text and image annotation. Information on how to use the electronic poster
submission system will be sent to the
authors of the accepted posters. An independent jury will judge the electronic
posters by online blind grading with regard to scientific content, educational
value and visual impression. Awards for
the 6 best electronic posters and best
abstracts will be given during the ICRS
Opening & Awards Ceremony on Sunday, September 24, 2016 at 17.00 hs.
• Traditional Wall Posters
In addition to the electronic posters,
which must be submitted on a manda
tory basis, the authors are invited to
produce a traditional poster for the
poster walls as well. If your abstract
is accepted as a poster, you will be requested to submit your electronic files
to the ICRS online poster submission
system and you should bring with you a
traditional poster for the poster exhibit
by reserving your poster wall in advance
through our Office.
Submission of Abstracts – Guidelines
Scientific abstracts must be submitted in
impeccable English within the following
structure: Purpose – Materials & Me
thods – Results – Conclusion and must
be written according to the few abstract
submission instructions to be found
in the ICRS abstract online submission
system. Abstract length is limited to a
maximum of 300 words and may contain
up to 2 graphs, pictures or tabs. For experimental clinical studies and animal
studies, a copy of the approval received
by the local ethical committee must be
sent to our Executive Office after successful submission of your abstract.
Abstract submission Deadline
Abstracts may be submitted online
through April 10, 2016 at noon CET (Central European Time) by accessing our
19
Call for Abstracts – Authors’ Information
online submission system on the ICRS
website. No abstract submissions by
letter, fax or E-Mail will be accepted and
no extension of the submission deadline will be granted. ICRS will NOT edit
abstracts for language issues, typing,
spelling, or grammatical mistakes. There
is no fee charged to submit an abstract
for ICRS 2016 and you may submit as
many abstracts as you wish. However, it
is highly recommended to not leave your
submissions until the very last day.
Presentation Preference
Submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed and may be accepted for either
an oral- or a poster presentation. Submitters may indicate their presentation preference during the submission
process but the Scientific Programme
Committee reserves the right to define
the final presentation type. No podium
presentations can be guaranteed to any
author.
Confirmation of Abstracts
Scientific contributions will be confirmed by end of April 2016 by E-Mail to
the presenting author. The presenting
author must inform all co-authors of the
notification result. Presenting authors of
accepted abstracts will be requested to
reconfirm their presentations and they
are expected to register normally to the
congress. They must cover their own
travel, lodging and registration fees.
Supplement Journal “Cartilage”
Congress abstracts are citable and will
be published electronically in the congress supplement of our official Journal
“Cartilage”, published by Sage ISSN
1947-6043 and in the printed congress
abstract book. We furthermore encou
rage all authors to additionally submit
their full manuscripts to our peer reviewed journal “Cartilage” which publishes full-length original manuscripts
on all types of cartilage including articular, nasal, auricular, tracheal/bronchial,
and intervertebral disc fibrocartilage.
Manuscripts on clinical and laboratory
research are welcome. Instructions to
authors for submissions are available at
http://cart.sagepub.com

Inhabited since Roman times, as witnessed by numerous remains, Anacapri had its heyday between the

when it became a retreat for artists

to spend their holidays and find inspiration. In Anacapri you can visit
