La vall de Sorteny Natural Park
The Sorteny Valley nature park, in
the Ordino parish, is a botanical
paradise with nearly 800 species
of flowers and plants, some of
which are unique to the Pyrenees.
Covering just 1,080 hectares, it is
home to a wide range of fauna;
Pyrenean chamois (Rupicabra
pyrenaica), deer (Capreolus capreolus) and a great diversity of
birds and butterflies.

in the country, and many are
found inside Andorra’s two
natural parks.
The land is mostly mountainous and
is composed of valleys and peaks
that soar nearly 3,000 m above sea
level such as Comapedrosa peak
(2,942 m), the highest summit in
Andorra, and Estanyó peak (1,915 m).
You can get to know our
topography by delving into
the Andorran countryside and
discovering the great diversity of
plant life all around.

Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror
In 2004, UNESCO declared Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley a World
Heritage Site in the cultural landscape category, which includes
only 88 natural spaces from all
around the world.
This is the name given to regions
that are unique as the result of
the combined action of man
and nature.
The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley
is located in the southeast of the
Principality of Andorra and covers
4,247 ha. This region accounts for
almost 10% of the surface area
of the country, extending to the
parishes of Encamp, Andorra
la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and
Escaldes-Engordany.
This valley is the most important
secondary river basin in the country. It runs 12 kilometres from
end to end, with a difference in
elevation of 1,855 m between
the lowest point (near the town
of Escaldes-Engordany, standing
at 1,050 m) and the highest one
(on the summit of La Portelleta, at
2,905). This valley is also home to
animal and plant species that are
very rare or in danger of extinction.
Whatever route you choose through
the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley,
you’ll find old shepherd cabins recently restored in a traditional way,
plots of land enclosed by walls that
once contained vegetable gardens,
huts and grazing areas for livestock,
etc. In summer, don’t miss out on
spending a night in any of the five
refuges to be found in the valley.
The stone-paved pathway of the
Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, which
corresponds to some sections of
the GR7 (GR footpath) and GR11
(GR footpath), constitutes one of
the more eminently characteristic
aspects of this cultural landscape.

Accessible tourism
Circuit de les Fonts – Engolasters,
Escaldes-Engordany
Accessible tourism
Andorra is open to everyone. It
is a place full of history, culinary
delights and trails abounding
in natural secrets. In an effort to
make Andorra accessible to all
collectives, we are pleased to
present some of the country’s
existing trails that have been
adapted for persons with special
needs. Enjoy!
Some of the trails presented here
have been adapted for people
with visual impairments and other
limitations in an attempt to make
Andorra’s natural and cultural richness accessible to all collectives.
The Comú of Escaldes-Engordany
presents Andorra’s first trail for
the visually impaired. The project
began in 2004 when the Environment and Tourism departments
initiated a joint study on possible improvements that could be
made to the area around Engolasters, bearing in mind the potential
of the area for tourism and leisure
activities. One of the main projects carried out was the adaptation of part of the Circuito de las
Fuentes de Engolasters for the visually impaired; the first of its kind
in Andorra.
The project also provided a response to one of the concerns of the majority, that of making nature accessible to all collectives and providing
them with a means of acquainting
themselves with the extraordinary
cultural and natural diversity of
the Engolasters area. In order to
carry out the project, the Comú of
Escaldes-Engordany contacted the
delegation of the Spanish National
Organisation for the Blind (ONCE)
in Lleida with the aim of requesting
technical consultation.
One of the technicians from the
Spanish organisation, Mayca Cruz,
visited the area in order to evaluate the possibility of adapting the
circuit and to provide consultation and orientation for the technicians from both the Comú and
the organisation entrusted with
the implementation of the project. One of the most important
12
13
Turisme accesible
aspects to be taken into consideration in a project of this nature is
to provide contrasting materials
and colours for different stages
of the trail, such as inclines or rest
areas, so that those with visual
impairments can detect and anticipate possible obstacles.
With this in mind the materials selected were designed to provide
contrasting textures and colours.
In addition, an uninterrupted
guide consisting of a 15 cm high
brick margin has been placed
along the length of the trail to facilitate the progress of those who
use a cane. Following this dynamic, the opposite side of the trail
is protected with another guide
consisting of a continuous hand
rail made from recycled plastic in
order to avoid the risk of wooden
splinters. The rest areas have been
equipped with adapted furniture and are distributed along the
length of the trail and vertical sig-
nage consists of posters labeled
with macrocarácteres with contrasting colors.
The adjusted path corresponds
to a length of almost 1,200 meters from the car parking in circuit de les Fonts to break point
in Els Corralets.

Tour of the Naturlandia animal
park in Sant Julià de Lòria
To reach the park, take the path
from the car park that takes you to
the Amphitheatre building at the
entrance to Naturlandia, at 2000m.
The building has a customer service
area, shop and a range of services.
The attraction of Naturlandia is that
you can share the natural environment in total safety with animals
from all over the Prat de Conangle.
It takes us on a journey to the home
of the brown bear of the Pyrenees,
the vantage point of the wolves and
a museum gallery, different herbivores, such as daines (deer), red
deer, mouflon, Iberian goats, deer
(Capreolus capreolus) and little sika
deer. The Eurasian lynx and Alpine
marmot also form part of the park’s
fauna. In summertime, you can also
see the farm area with the different
animals that live there. The habitats,
management offices and safety
measures comply with European
standards to ensure the well-being
of the different species.

Hiking and long routes
Hiking and long routes
The best way to discover a country is on foot, step by step, losing
yourself in the landscape and discovering its hidden secrets.
2 LDP (long distance path that includes international borders): The
Three Nations route and the Lake
Tour route.
Andorra has a number of GR footpaths which criss-cross the country.:
PHR (Pyrenean High Level Route):
with a cumulative elevation gain
of 2565 m and a loss of 2770 m.
LDP (Long Distance Path): a 120
km long path for discovering the
essence of the least known areas
of Andorra. The path is divided
into seven stages between 12
and 20 km in length, designed
according to the location of the
29 huts (5 of which are guarded)
and allowing for a walking pace
that permits unlimited enjoyment
of the natural surroundings. With
the purchase of the path guides
Andorra GRP, la volta a tot un país
(Andorra LDT, a path across the
country) and the Mapa de refugis i camins de gran recorregut
d’Andorra (Hut and long distance
path map of Andorra) there is no
excuse for not getting the most
out of Andorra’s mountains.
GR-7: with a difference in elevation of almost 2,000 m between
the highest point (2,840 m at Pessons pass) and the lowest point
(850 m at La Farga de Moles), the
GR-7 crosses Andorra from the eastern side to the southern side. The
path forms part of the European
E-4 (Tarifa-Sparta), which is 40 km
long as it passes through Andorra.
GR-11 (Great Pyrenees Route):
also known as the Pyrenees Path
(“Senda Pirenaica”) the GR-11 is
a long-distance route in 47 stages. It crosses the Pyrenees along
their southern slope from the Bay
of Biscay (Cape Higuer) to the
Mediterranean (Cape Creus) and
climbs to the Andorran valleys.
Crossborder Trail: the meetingpoint trail, which begins in Auzat,
in France, and ends in Seu d’Urgell,
in Spain, taking in all of Andorra.
If you want to take a walk with
your family, we suggest the guide Camins d’Andorra (Trails of
Andorra), which covers 54 routes
by foot among the rich and varied
settings of our mountains, especially Andorra’s two natural parks,
one of which was declared World
Heritage by UNESCO in 2004. The
routes are indicated on the ground
with different paint marks or with
wooden signs that can be found in
the book’s legend. The data sheets
are practical and manageable,
with specific data on each route’s
features, a detailed topoguide and
lots of graphic information.
Delve into nature accompanied
by expert guides who will show
you the secrets of the mountains of Andorra. You’ll be able to
complete ecotourism routes that
will help you to expand your
knowledge of the flora, fauna,
culture and traditions of Andorra,
and to discover the most surprising places. (www.agamandorra.com)
Another way of discovering Andorra on
foot is by hiking EL CAMI (THE PATH):
a cultural hiking route which takes in
all the Catalan speaking regions and
islands on a cross-country trail.

Bicycle touring and mountain
bike routes
Andorra has an extensive network
of mountain bike paths cutting
through the great outdoors, while the ski resorts, such as Grandvalira, Vallnord and Naturlandia,
transform in spring to offer a wide
range of activities: from adventure
circuits and kart racing to freeride
circuits in the outdoors and bike
parks adapted to all levels.
Another option is to ascend to
the mountain passes of Andorra,
where routes of varying levels of
difficulty and length can open the
whole country for you. The network totals almost 200 kilometres
through 20 mountain passes, some
nearly 2,500 m above sea level.
It is true that both beginning and
expert cyclists come to Andorra to
practise the sport. Throughout the
year, the country hosts many cycling
races that draw thousands of professionals, fans and inquisitive people.
Andorra works every day to promote cycling in the country; in
addition to lending support to
many sports initiatives, it also encourages praticising them. As part
of this, Andorra recently launched
a project to signpost 20 routes
through the country’s mountain
passes. For more information, ask
any tourist office.
Vallnord Bike Park and Soldeu Bike
Park can provide you with kilometres
and kilometres to enjoy the various
mountain bike routes at many levels. Biking styles like cross-country,
off-track, four-cross, downhill circuits,
etc., will provide you with an unforgettable experience with your family,
friends, partner or whomever you
wish. You can compare yourself with
the Mountain Bike World Cup professionals who share these very settings.
There are also areas to ride BMX
(Arinsal circuit), with free access. In
some parishes you can even stroll
down the bike path with your family.

Fishing
From mid-April to the end of September, Andorra is now one of the
destinations with the most potential
for practising fishing.
Inhospitable landscapes and
2,000 m of altitude must be
overcome to practise fly fishing, a
very popular Andorran specialty.
Among the salmonid species that can
be found in rivers, lakes and ponds,
the country’s autochthonous brown
trout merits mention (Salmo trutta
fario). You may also end up hooking
a brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) or
rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
15 fishing preserves
In addition to free fishing rivers and
lakes, Andorra has fifteen controlled
fishing areas, four intensive, three
natural preserves and three catchand-release. The intensive areas are
Engolasters lake and Ós river (14/3
to 15/11), Valira del Nord river (11/4
to 11/10), Tristaina lakes (20/6 to

other factors making the descent complicated.

A dry and open ravine with not much change in elevation, this is an ideal route for canyoning and practising the
