hydrated

judge ruled Monday that radio icon Casey Kasem, who remains in hospice care, be fed and hydrated and that a
court-appointed attorney evaluate the health of the ailing host, siding with Kasem's wife rather than her
stepdaughter, who was named temporary conservator.
Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy said that Kasem, who suffers from Lewy body dementia, should continue to be
medicated at the discretion of his doctors, according to court documents obtained by The Times, despite his daughter, Kerri
Kasem, moving to implement end-of-life measures.
Kerri Kasem and her father's doctors in Washington had stopped hydration, nutrition and some medications after they
determined that the processes became too painful for the 82-year-old, her attorney Troy Martin said in court.
Martin told The Times that restoring hydration and nutrition would cause the former "Scooby Doo" voice star "a great amount
of pain."
The judge set another hearing for Friday to receive an update on Kasem's health after the court-appointed attorney goes to
Washington to get a status update on Kasem's condition and speak with the former "American Top 40" host and his doctors.
But a rep for his daughter, who was granted the temporary conservatorship on May 13, worried that the decision may be for
naught and believed that Jean Kasem, Kasem's wife of 34 years who has been feuding with her stepchildren over her husband's
care, was "distracting" the family from spending what may be their last moments with their father.
"The point is, by Friday, will he even make it?" Kerri Kasem spokesman Danny Deraney told The Times. "He's receiving hospice
care now. He can't eat anything, his body rejects it. He's in stable condition and there's nothing more that they can do."
Jean Kasem, who had previously been held in contempt of court for not cooperating with the family, supported the judge's
decision.
"Only God knows when to take someone," Jean Kasem said, according to the Associated Press.
Jean Kasem, who made headlines last week for hurling raw meat at her stepdaughter, was in the Los Angeles court on Monday
and reportedly broke down in the corridor, falling to her knees as she repeatedly said, "Please don't let them kill my husband,"

Jean Kasem’s attorney Steve Haney said that his client "was very upset" and she asked people in the hallway to pray with her to
"please save my husband's life."
"She doesn’t have to be in court, but the problem is that Kerry has convinced the people up there [in Washington] that Jean can
only see her husband alone — separate from his kids — for five minutes a day," Haney said. "So she had a choice of watching
him die and seeing him five minutes a day or coming back to Los Angeles and doing something about it. She opted for coming
to Los Angeles to stop the process leading to his death."
Haney accused Kerri Kasem of "ignoring the court order" and "is basically watching him die."
He said that Casey Kasem is able to communicate with his wife nonverbally.
"He never was in a coma. He's not a vegetable. When Jean talks to him he understands her and she can ask him questions and
will communicate through blinking," Haney said."He's coherent, but he just can't verbalize things. Jean feels that he wants to
live as long as he could."
At the heart of the family’s acrimony is a $2-million trust that will be equally distributed among Kasem's three children from
his first marriage and his daughter Liberty, whom he had with Jean Kasem, Deraney told The Times. Jean Kasem has accused
Kerri and her siblings of trying to end their father's life to get the money, he said.
However, Jean Kasem's camp alleges that Kerri Kasem in a "dire" economic state, is upside down on her house and owes her
father hundreds of thousands of dollars, Haney said. Jean Kasem believes that her stepdaughter is trying to expedite his death to
get his $2-million life insurance policy, he said.
"Casey wanted to be left alone in peace and privacy to die, and Kerri was trying to create a situation in which she could be in a
position of power and authority over her father."
The radio host was moved from a Santa Monica facility last month by his wife and was staying with her at a family friend's
house before Kerri Kasem had him moved to a hospital on June 1.
Late last week, doctors said he was in critical but stable condition, according to a statement on from St. Anthony Hospital
obtained by CNN, and was receiving antibiotics through IVs, medicine for blood pressure support and care for his bed sores.
The powers of the temporary conservatorship will remain in effect until a hearing on the permanent conservatory takes place
on June 20, Martin told The Times.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Casey Kasem, an
iconic voice of radio and television for
decades, lies critically ill in a Washington
hospital, while his three children from his
first marriage fight with their stepmother,
Jean Kasem, in court and the media for
control of his final days.
The public battle -- always emotional and
sometimes bizarre -- began in October

The dispute is about love, Kasem's oldest daughters said. His wife of 33 years argued it's about Kasem's
fortune, built over four decades of radio and television voice work.
Reaching for the stars
Kasem's voice counted down the "American Top 40" hits each week for nearly four decades in a radio
show heard around the world. He voiced the cartoon character Shaggy on "Scooby-Doo" cartoons for 40
years. He was the voice of the NBC television network for years. He narrated thousands of radio and
television commercials during his career.
He divorced his first wife when his daughters and son were young. He remarried in 1980, to Jean, a
26-year-old actress best known for a recurring role on TV's "Cheers" series. The couple have a daughter
together, Liberty Kasem, now a 24-year-old aspiring singer.
Kasem became the world's best-known radio host as his syndicated shows grew in popularity and
distribution through the 1970s and 1980s. His famous signoff was "Keep your feet on the ground and keep
reaching for the stars." He finally handed off his duties to Ryan Seacrest in 2004.
He retired from hosting and voice work in 2009, two years after a doctor diagnosed him with Parkinson's
disease, a diagnosis that was later changed to Lewy body dementia, which has no cure, according to
court documents.

After Kasem was told he had Parkinson's in 2007, he signed a document giving his oldest children
authority to make his medical decisions if he should become unable to do so himself.
The power of attorney statement signed by Kasem on November 11, 2007, included a declaration that he
did not want to be kept alive with "any form of life sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration"
if it "would result in a mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope of
normal functioning."
This document, which snubbed Kasem's wife, set the stage for the legal battle that would erupt six years
later as his health deteriorated and his children accused the stepmother of shutting them out of their
father's life.
'Let Casey see his kids'
Kasem's oldest daughters took to the streets of the exclusive
Holmby Hills community in early October 2013 to publicly
demand that their stepmother allow them to see their father.
Kerri Kasem told reporters that Jean Kasem had kept them
away for the previous three months and she was worried
about his health.

"I don't get it, I don't understand it," she told CNN. "He has Parkinson's, and all the research we've done
indicates socialization would help him."
About a dozen people who said they were friends of Kasem joined the daughters in the sign-waving
demonstration at the entrance to the Kasem estate. "Let Casey see his kids," one sign read. His younger
brother, Mouner Kasem, flew to Los Angeles from Michigan to hold a sign that read: "I miss my brother".
"He can't really speak, but he knows we're there," Kerri
Kasem told a TV reporter covering the protest. "And last time
we saw him, he could shuffle a little bit. He had a hard, very
hard, time walking. He was just deteriorating due to
Parkinson's disease."

Daughter Julie Kasem and her husband, a cardiologist, filed a
petition in court days later asking a judge to give them control of Kasem's medical care. Los Angeles
County Superior Judge Lesley Green appointed an investigator to report on Kasem's condition. The judge
ruled in November that he was being well cared for by his wife and denied the daughter's request for a
medical conservatorship.

Jean Kasem's lawyer defended her decision to keep the stepchildren away in a court filing in November.
"For reasons they know all too well, their presence at this stage would be toxic and extremely distressing
for Casey, Jean and their daughter, Liberty, who have had enough of their cruelty."
Julie and her brother Mike Kasem reached a confidential
agreement with their stepmother in December that allowed
them to visit their father, although Kerri Kasem refused.
She talked to CNN Piers Morgan in December about the
dispute. "It's like, take the person that you love most on Earth,
know that they're sick, know they want to see you, you get 20

Kerri Kasem started the Kasem Cares Foundation with the goal of "supporting visitation rights of adult

The Kasem family feud took a bizarre twist in May when Kerri Kasem accused her stepmother of
removing her father from a Santa Monica nursing home and leaving the country -- or at least California -to avoid a court order giving Kerri Kasem control over his medical decisions.

"I believe my father's wife fled the country (or possibly went to
an Indian Reservation) with my Dad because she knew I
would win in court today," Kerri Kasem said in a Facebook
post. "The judge ordered, Adult Protective Services, the PVP
Attorney and the police to look for him. Please pray that he is
safe."

His daughters filed a missing persons report with police,
triggering an interstate lookout for Kasem. Sheriff's deputies in
Kitsap County, Washington, located him at a friend's home
there a day later. After staying 40 minutes and determining
that Kasem was alert, not in distress and was receiving
appropriate care, the deputies left.

father at a May 24 hearing. The judge also said that the famed
radio countdown host "cannot travel anywhere without a court
order and until the doctor examines him and gives him
clearance for a journey," the court spokeswoman said.

Kerri Kasem getting a judge's approval to visit her father for an hour. The judge also gave Kerri Kasem
authority to take him to a doctor.

the hearing. She then played an audio recording of what
sounded like a groaning man, saying the moaning came from
her husband when he heard about the court activity. "He's
crying," she said.
Meat for 'the dogs'
Jean Kasem's anger at her stepchildren boiled over as paramedics arrived at the home in western
Washington where she and her husband were staying to carry him to a hospital on June 1. She initially
appeared to refuse to let paramedics into the home, a video showed.
As her ailing husband was loaded into an ambulance, she
stormed down a driveway and tossed a package of
hamburger meat near Kerri Kasem.
While referring to King David of the Bible, she said she was
throwing the meat at "the dogs." Kerri Kasem's rep provided
cell phone video of the incident to CNN.

say goodbye. Kasem "won't be with us much longer," said Danny Deraney, the rep for Kerri Kasem.
Despite their bitter squabble, Kerri Kasem said the children from his first marriage wanted their
stepmother and half-sister to be with them as it seemed his last moments were nearing.
"If he opens his eyes, I want my dad just once to see everyone standing around him, putting our
differences aside and let him know how much he is loved by everyone, including Jean and Liberty," she
said.
Judge orders Casey Kasem's water, food, medications restored
Any family unity was shattered by Monday, when Jean Kasem appeared in a Los Angeles court to ask a
judge to order Kasem's doctors to resume his water, nutrition and medication infusions. The judge agreed.
Her lawyer accused Kasem's daughter of trying to hasten her father's death by having the infusions
stopped over the weekend. Attorney Steve Haney called Kerri Kasem "a godless woman" who said her
motive for speeding up her father's death was financial. Kerri Kasem "could cash in immediately" on her
share of a $2 million life insurance policy when he dies, he said.
Kerri Kasem was in Washington with her father Monday and not at the hearing, but her lawyer defended
her.
"I think Kerri has conducted herself in a way that demonstrates she's solely concerned about the health of
her father," attorney Troy Martin said.
Murphy will reconsider at a hearing Friday who should make medical decisions for Kasem: his daughter,
wife or a neutral party. He ordered Kasem's court-appointed lawyer to travel to Washington to assess his
medical condition and try to communicate with him.
"He's not a vegetable. He can communicate," his wife's lawyer told Murphy. But the daughter's attorney
told the judge that was false.

weeks after tying the knot,
the happy couple have
extended their newlywed bliss with a trip to Punta Mita,
Mexico, according to multiple reports.
“We have tried everything to keep him alive. We did put him back on fluids, but
we had to take him off again because his lungs were filling up. It sounded like
he was drowning. It was excruciating to watch,” Kerri, 41, told the Daily News
Monday.
“The feeding was backing up because he can’t digest,” she said, her voice
choking with emotion. “This is breaking my heart. We’re been trying for nine
days to keep him alive. There’s nothing we want more than for our dad to be
here with us.”

Jean Kasem, the wife of ailing DJ Casey Kasem, filed a declaration in court June 9
accusing Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri Kasem of working in porn and scheming to
give her father's fortune (estimated at $80 million) to Scientology.
"In addition to her conversion to Scientology, Kerri and Casey also had a falling-out over
Kerri's involvement in soft-core pornography," declared Jean Kasem. "Kerri has, for a
number of years, made a living doing nude or scantily clad modeling. While I will not
now share the seedy and demeaning pictures that Kerri posed for to receive money, a
simple Internet search under 'Kerri Kasem nude' will reveal pornographic photo after
photo of Kerri, either nude or scantily clad, and many photos of Kerri engaging in sex
acts.… Her true motive is to get back at her father and to be appointed to a position of
influence over him where she can alter his estate plan and have his money go to her
and her church of Scientology."

Kerri Kasem denies those claims.
"My dad is very proud of me and we have an extremely close relationship," Kerri Kasem
tells The Hollywood Reporter. "No, I am not giving my dad's fortune to Scientology." She
did not comment on whether she is a Scientologist. Her spokesman, Danny Deraney,
says, "There's a $2 million trust for Kerri, her brother and sister -- and Liberty, Jeannie's
daughter, is in it, too. So they all get maybe $500,000. Kerri has a job -- she's a radio

Deraney calls the porn charge preposterous. "Kerri told me, 'Oh, I guess she considers
Maxim pornography.' And what if Kerri had done pornography? She could be in a
bukaki with 800 men and it would have nothing to do with this. If she worships the devil,
what does it have to do with anything? Kerri and her family are fine if Casey's will says, 'I
gave all my money to the Boy Scouts of America.' They're all fine with that."

Kerri Kasem alleges that in the 12 days since she got temporary conservatorship of her
father's health care, "Jean has visited one day," while Kerri's sister, brother, uncle and
aunt have remained by Casey Kasem's side.
"I wish Jean would just focus on what's important and visit her husband, who does not
have much time left."
Jean Kasem's attorney, Steven Haney, says she is trying to restore her authority over
Mr. Kasem's treatment. "The hearing on Jeannie becoming temporary conservator is
this Friday, June 13, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. [in] downtown L.A.," says Haney.

Jean Kasem declared that there is another health problem caused by the family strife.
"As a direct result of this incessant cyber slamming, vicious character assassination
and digital pile-on, and the excessive stress it has caused, Liberty has suffered four lifethreatening asthma attacks in just the last two weeks."
