Annual Report

Dear Members and Friends,
On behalf of the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society, we take great pride in
sharing with you reflections of our efforts throughout the past year in this FY 2014
Annual Report.
Since 1916, the Infant Welfare Society has worked tirelessly to improve the health
and well-being of disadvantaged children in our community. We will strive to serve
even more children who need our help in the coming year, as the demand for our
services is greater than ever.
Today, the Society, 120 members strong, is the single largest benefactor to the
IWS Children’s Clinic, raising 10% of its budget. Thanks to Society gifts, foundation
grants, community donors and Medicaid funding, the IWS Children’s Clinic this year
was able to provide medical, dental and behavioral health care to 3,229 children in
9,996 visits.
The leadership, members and volunteers of the Society and our Clinic staff have
worked diligently to fulfill our mission and maintain positive momentum in a very
challenging and changing healthcare environment. The Affordable Care Act and
the move to Medicaid managed care in the State of Illinois introduces a healthcare
delivery model that is focused on coordination of care, a model to which our Clinic
has long been committed with its approach to holistic care. Serving both the
physical and mental health needs of children, our Children’s Clinic is as relevant
today as it was when we opened our doors 98 years ago.
As we prepare for our Centennial Celebration in 2016, the Infant Welfare Society
is grateful to so many in our community for supporting our mission and
ensuring that children in need have access to quality health care. We would
not be able to accomplish what we do without your continued commitment.
As we look to another year, we hope you, our dedicated partners, will
continue to keep us and our mission a priority as we strive to improve the
health of children, one child at a time.
With appreciation,
Lynne Williams

Outreach and Education
5,244 kids were reached through our Oral Health and

I would take him to one place to monitor
and another for dental. Now, he comes here
with that—he knows everyone. He also gets
counseling here. That’s helped more than I can
tell you. He is doing so much better both at
school and at home. He is listening at school,
helping at home. Here, they give me ideas on
how to be a better parent. It really helps.”

Connecting Children to a Medical Home
Seven-year-old Anthony lives in Cicero and is one of the
nearly 660,000 kids living in poverty1 in the state of Illinois. His
family and others like his whose children are publicly-insured
or uninsured have limited access to medical care. Last year
our medical team cared for 1,218 children in 3,312 visits. Our
mission is to help boys like Anthony by giving them access to
coordinated, integrated care: physical exams, vaccines, flu shots,
and sick child care and developmental and social/emotional
screenings.
Connecting to dental care to fight the #1 childhood
chronic disease
Day after day, Julian tried to concentrate on his homework. This
second grader from Berwyn suffered for months with an intense
toothache—he knew his mom couldn’t afford to send him to
the dentist. Over 51 million school hours are lost each year due
to dental-related problems2 and low income children are at a
considerably higher risk. The IWS dental clinic is one of the few
resources available to Julian and others for affordable pediatric
dental care in the Chicago area, providing full preventive and
restorative care. Last year we treated 2,699 children in 6,684
visits for oral exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental
sealants, extractions, cavity repair, and root canals. We treated
Julian’s infected tooth, with no charge to his mom.
Jazmin, a teen from Oak Park, is at risk for obesity; she has low
energy and is struggling at school. She is not alone, as childhood
obesity is a public health problem of epidemic proportions
in the United States. Our medical team talks with her every
time she comes in about eating a nutritious diet and getting
regular exercise. Our certified dietitian coordinates with our
pediatricians and nurse practitioners to provide girls like Jazmin
with nutrition counseling and support. Last year, the dietitian
helped Jazmin and 71 other children in our Nutrition Program.
Photos above, left to right:
Dr. Karen Walker, Medical Director, listens to a patient’s
vital signs during a school physical.
Dr. Lynse Briney, Oral Health Director, talks with patients
during a preventive dental visit.
Stephanie Gurewitz, therapist, works a puzzle with a
client during a counseling session.
Pediatrician Dr. Stephanie Weller reads with a patient.
Our pediatric dentists have additional training in behavioral
management. They are able to treat children with special needs,
those with extensive oral health problems, and children with
behavioral health issues. Oral Health Director Dr. Lynse Briney,
DDS, now has hospital privileges at Illinois Masonic Medical
Center where she is able to treat patients who need to be
anesthetized for their dental procedures.
School Connections
Desiree is a student in Stickney and was one of the 1,315
students examined last year by one of our dentists in the
Portable Dentistry team. Our team visited 20 area schools and
gave students exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments and dental
sealants. Last year we identified 560 children like Desiree who
needed urgent dental care. We worked hard to link Desiree and
the other children to treatment so that they could be pain free at
both home and school.
Every day we connect children to

Behavioral Health
The Mind-Body Connection
Medical care and mental health services are integrated at the
Clinic, helping children like Xavier. Xavier’s mom didn’t want him
to feel ashamed for seeking help for his anger and depression.
At the IWS Children’s Clinic his family finally broke through the
barriers preventing Xavier from getting the care he needed. The
barriers are formidable; stigma, long waiting lists at community
mental health agencies, lack of treatment options for children
who are publicly insured and uninsured, and a shortage of
bilingual mental health providers. Xavier and his family are not
alone. In Illinois, 53% of children ages 3-17 have one or more
emotional, behavioral, or developmental conditions.3
An IWS social worker attends every well-child visit. Last year
1,713 children were assessed for emotional well-being and
developmental readiness so children like Xavier can benefit from
the early identification and treatment of social and emotional
problems and developmental delays. Today, Xavier is getting the
help he needs. Through a partnership with Family Service and
Mental Health Center of Cicero, a therapist and psychiatrist, both
bilingual, provide on-site mental health assessments, individual
and family therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and medication
monitoring. Long-term counseling to 35 families and 14 children
was provided by our bilingual therapist. And it isn’t just the child
who gets help. Last year, our social worker provided assistance
to 67 families. Because the need is so great, we now offer a third
weekday evening for therapeutic services.

Connecting Chil
The Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society (IWS) is a
volunteer membership organization. For more than 98 years, our
members have served our communities by providing health care
services to children in need. Last year, the Society maintained its
excellent tradition of fundraising to support health services for
children, while also building its future through accomplishing
many of its major strategic goals.
Fundraising Success
“We are proud of our continued fundraising success. In fiscal year
2014 the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society raised over
$155,000 from all-circle fundraisers—the Holiday Housewalk & Market,
the Tee It Up Fore Kids Golf Outing, and through the Economy Shop,
Celebration Gifts, and individual circle efforts. The funds raised make
up 10% of the annual budget for the IWS Children’s Clinic, which
provided 9,996 medical, dental and social services visits. Additionally,
our members are engaged in all development efforts including the
annual fund, Mary Anderson Nursing Fund, and donor stewardship.”

For every dollar we raise, we use 82 cents to fund services for kids.
To support the $150 average cost for each child medical visit,
we need to raise $75 through private donations.
To support the $110 average cost for each child dental visit,
we need to raise $33 through private donations.
