BOSTON’S
FUTURE
LEADERS
“Identifying and Developing
the Leaders of Tomorrow”
The Greater Boston Chamber is committed to driving economic growth, creating
new opportunities for members, and building a more inclusive community.
A critical component of this commitment is ensuring a bright future for Greater
Boston by identifying the leaders of tomorrow – Boston’s Future Leaders – and
enriching their professional experience as they advance to executive positions.
MISSION
To identify the leaders of tomorrow and engage them in the business and civic life of
our community by providing a platform for professional development and significant
opportunities for growth and exposure.
GOALS
The Chamber offers numerous opportunities, including leadership development programs
at Harvard Business School and Suffolk University Sawyer Business School, that aim to give
each participant:
In collaboration with:
•Enhanced personal leadership and professional skills;
•A lasting network of professional peers;
•Connections with prominent executives in the business and civic communities;
•Opportunities to become more informed about public policy issues that impact local businesses; and
•An increased ability to add value to their organizations and to the Greater Boston employer community as they advance to executive positions.
After completing the one-year program, Boston’s Future Leaders alumni are invited to remain
connected with the Chamber and each other through unique programs and receptions.
Sponsored by:
ELIGIBILITY
Selection Criteria: Participants must work for a Chamber member organization, hold a midto senior-level management position within their respective organizations, and be identified as
having high potential for an executive-level position.
Nomination Process: Candidates must be nominated by senior executives within Chamber
member organizations. A new class of 50-60 individuals will be selected to join Boston’s Future
Leaders in January.

a 1 ½ day leadership program delivered by Harvard Business School, a full day program entitled
“Connecting Business with Government” delivered by Suffolk University Sawyer Business School,
and all additional program and reception costs.
2010 PROGRAMMING
Boston’s Future Leaders and alumni take advantage of exclusive forums and receptions
throughout the year, which build a foundation for effective career and personal growth.
Orientation & Welcome Reception
February
This evening program welcomes the incoming class, facilitates introductions among the group,
outlines the program content and expectations for the year, and introduces program participants
to the Chamber. A networking reception with a select group of Boston’s Future Leaders alumni
will immediately follow the program.
Harvard Business School
“Business Leaders as Social Value Creators”
March
Boston’s Future Leaders have a unique opportunity to take part in a 1 ½ day program delivered
by Harvard Business School (HBS). This program serves as the foundation for the rest of the
programs throughout the year. Participants explore critical topics such as corporate social
responsibility and leadership in crisis through business case studies. This program at HBS offers
the group a unique opportunity to learn from some of the country’s more prominent professors
while building a strong foundation for lasting relationships with their professional peers.
Annual Boston’s Future Leaders Reception
April
The reception connects the current class with alumni from previous Boston’s Future Leaders
classes at a leading Boston venue for a chance to network, connect, and meet other local
emerging leaders.
Board of Directors Luncheon
“Leaders Connect: A Conversation Between Leaders of Today and Tomorrow”
June
At this luncheon, Boston’s Future Leaders will hear from a respected leader from the Greater
Boston business community while connecting with members of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
These established executives will be seated at tables with Boston’s Future Leaders to informally
share best practices and lessons learned throughout their careers. Past speakers for this event
include Chad Gifford, chairman emeritus, Bank of America; Jack Connors, chairman emeritus,
Hill Holliday; and Paul Levy, president & CEO, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Introduction to Board Service
“Listening to our region’s most accomplished business leaders in an intimate
setting is an invaluable experience for
a young professional. Even in the short
time I have been a part of the program,
I have built a solid network of professional
peers from across multiple industries,
and continue to expand those contacts
through alumni events.”
September
As emerging leaders in the Greater Boston business community, participants are likely to have
the opportunity to serve on either a non-profit or corporate board. This program, presented
in conjunction with the National Association of Corporate Directors, will introduce participants
to both non-profit and corporate board service. Speakers will cover issues such as the legal,
ethical, and financial responsibilities of serving on a board; the difference between non-profit and
corporate boards; and how to find the right board to serve on.
Behind the Scenes
October
This program will give Boston’s Future Leaders special access to a “behind the scenes” tour of
some of Boston’s most interesting and influential places of business. The group will tour the
location and hear from the organization’s leadership about the inner workings of the business
and its relationship to the Greater Boston community.
Suffolk University Sawyer Business School
“Connecting Business with Government”
November
This customized full day program is designed to explore the relationship between business and
government at the state, local, and federal levels. In addition to hearing from key government and
business leaders, participants will gain a better understanding of how to effectively work with
government through interactive discussions and case studies.
Board of Directors Meeting & Annual Holiday Reception
December
To finish off the year of programming, Boston’s Future Leaders will gather to reflect on the year
and learn how to stay engaged as alumni. The group will then join the Chamber’s Board of
Directors for their quarterly meeting and join fellow Chamber members afterwards at the Annual
Holiday Reception.

“Spending a year as part of the Boston’s
Future Leaders program was a turning
point in terms of my career development.
Gaining insight from some of our region’s
most esteemed leaders in business,
government, and academia, while
forging new connections with fellow
up-and-coming members of the business
community, enabled me to be a stronger
and more effective leader.”
