DIRECTOR’S
NOTE
What do you think of when the story of “Cinderella” is mentioned? Do
images of glass slippers, carriages, Fairy Godmothers, and pumpkins
come to mind? Or maybe you think more about the themes of love at
first sight, taking control of one’s destiny, and good succeeding over
evil? If such themes and images come to mind, then this UCalgary
Operetta Company production of Cinderella – Enchanted Edition will
fulfil all your dreams.
Cinderella-Enchanted Edition was written after the very successful
1997 Disney television production. It contains most of the lyrical songs
from the original 1957 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, but has
utilized modern language and references in the script. While the original
musical was very proper in its treatment of this fairy tale, the Enchanted
Edition takes a few liberties! Songs such as In My Own Little Corner,
Ten Minutes Ago and Stepsister’s Lament will still be heard in all their
Rodgers and Hammerstein glory.
It has been my pleasure to work with this company on our production
of Cinderella –Enchanted Edition. This cast, made up of university
students, alumni, and community members, brings to the stage passion
and energy for both this story and for the genre of musical theatre. The
students involved in the show come from a variety of faculties including
engineering, kinesiology, nursing, commerce, psychology and arts. The
alumni and community cast members, with a plethora of backgrounds,
add to the richness and depth of the stage experience. The cast has
had the pleasure of working with a pit orchestra, directed by Dustin
Stirling. The orchestra members come from the university and larger
Calgary community.
Special thanks to Byron Redd, Rosanna
Redd, and Brent Tucker who took on many
leadership roles in this production and let
their passion for the art permeate every
endeavour.
ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE!

SYNOPSIS
SYNOPSIS
Cinderella, whose beloved father has passed away, takes care of the
home of her ill-tempered and selfish stepmother and stepsisters, all of
which order Cinderella about as a servant girl. Often left alone in her corner
near the fire, she dreams of living an exotic life as a princess or anything
other than a servant.
In the village square, a royal herald proclaims: “The Prince is giving a
Ball!” The ladies of the kingdom are thrilled at the prospect of attending
and meeting the Prince.
Meanwhile, the King and Queen get ready for the big celebration.
They hope that their son will find a suitable bride, but the Prince is a bit
apprehensive about meeting all the eager women of the kingdom. As
Cinderella’s stepsisters get ready for the Ball, hoping that they will catch
the Prince’s eye, they laugh at Cinderella and her intent to attend the Ball
as well. Finally they leave and Cinderella imagines having gone with them.
To a melancholy Cinderella, a Fairy Godmother appears. Persuaded by the
fervour of Cinderella’s wish to go to the Ball, she transforms Cinderella into
a beautifully-gowned young lady; a pumpkin into a glittering carriage and
little mice friends into impressive horses and footmen to get her to the Ball.
Before she arrives at the palace, her Fairy Godmother warns her not to
stay past the stroke of midnight.
Inside, the Prince has been bored by the attention of all the young ladies
with whom he has had to dance, including the stepsisters. The grand
entrance of a beautiful and mysterious young lady immediately attracts
everyone’s attention and intrigues the Prince. The two dance together and
instantly fall in love. Seeing the Prince with a petite beauty (whom they do
not recognize being Cinderella), the stepsisters ask why he wouldn’t prefer
a substantial “usual” girl like them? The Prince and Cinderella dance and
find themselves in a private moment, where he declares his love for her. As
they share a kiss, the clock begins to strike midnight and Cinderella flees
before the enchantment wears off; in her haste, she leaves behind a single
glass slipper.
Later that night, Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters reminisce about
the Ball and find that Cinderella is very intuitive about what it must have
been like attending and dancing with the Prince. Meanwhile, the Prince
is searching for the beauty with whom he danced and fell in love, and
who fled so quickly from him. His royal herald tries the slipper on all the
ladies of the kingdom. At Cinderella’s house, the slipper will not fit any of
the stepfamily and everyone persists in steering the Prince away from the
servant girl. Taking her destiny into her own hands, Cinderella makes her
presence known to the Prince and his steward.
The Prince recognizes Cinderella as the girl he bumped into in the village
and as his beautiful mysterious dance partner. The young lovers marry and
live happily ever after.
