HANC 2014 Water Tests
Another HANC water test has come and gone and we had an extremely fun weekend! We
had a really good turnout with people driving in from as far as Texas, Colorado, Arkansas and
northern Illinois. I want to thank our exhibitors for traveling such a distance to support our
test, and we hope to see you back next year!
On Saturday, Suzi Bidwell and seven year old Tess qualified for their WRDX. Tess worked
very hard and it was so exciting to see her pass at a veteran age, so we offer huge congratulations
to them!
We also owe huge congratulations to Everett Ward and his water loving girl, Sage. They
requalified for WRD on both Saturday and Sunday. It’s inspiring to watch them work as a
team, as Sage bounds into the water so enthusiastically and finishes her tasks quickly and with
great accuracy. It will be fun to see them next year, hopefully competing at the WRDX level!
Several other dogs missed their titles by only one slight mistake. It is amazing to see just
how hard these dogs work, and those who do water work regularly can attest that it can be
exhausting for the Newfs, especially at the WRDX level.
I want to thank our judges, Annalyn Paz and Lanelle Warrick for doing a fabulous job judging
the dogs. It was fairly hot with high humidity and you tolerated a toasty warm beach for two
long days. You were patient and understanding, and I know your work was appreciated by all.
We would love to have you come back to judge in the future.
Thank you to Mark and Cassie Iken for being observers at the test. I hope you were able to
learn some new things and we look forward to having you back!
I would like to thank everyone who donated items for the raffle, where a huge table of various
water working items was won by Jessica Cobban. Also, congratulations to Jane Lavender,
who won a beautiful oak cart donated by Joceyln and John Hawley.
Thank you to Peggy Pack for handling the raffle items and for making those great exhibitor
bags full of goodies.
Thank you to Sylvia Steffen, our secretary, for doing massive amounts of paperwork in the
heat for two long days. You did so much work and it is greatly appreciated.
Thank you to Stacy Smith for organizing our stewards. By the way, Stacy ended up being one
of the best stewards herself – she was right on top of things and kept the test moving without
delay, making sure items were to their handlers immediately when needed, and for helping

with the boat as well. Excellent job, Stacy!
Thank you to all of the stewards who helped with the boat, called dogs, played “drowning
victim”, took and handed off line, got supplies and did too many miscellaneous tasks to list
here. You were all wonderful!
Thank you to Gary Walker for all of your boat and kayak work, setting up the beach, and for
being totally in control of the goings-on out on the beach and in the water. You did a fabulous
job with the kayak and dropping items, even in very high winds on Sunday.
Thank you to Matt Cobban in charge of safety and to Russ McDowell for security, and to our
Third Committee Member, Sarah McDowell. Everyone did such a great job and things ran so
smoothly. Thank you to all of the club members who helped with set up and to the exhibitors
who volunteered to steward and to take photos.
If I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me. It takes so many people to make a two day
test run smoothly and everyone did a wonderful job. We look forward to next year’s test and
invite everyone to come back (and bring a friend) to compete and work your dog with Heart
of America Newfoundland Club!
I sincerely thank you,
Melanie Regnier, HANC 2014 Water Test Show Chair
Parade Wagon Raffle a Success!
HANC member Jane Lavendar is now the proud owner of the beautiful parade wagon
that was raffled off after the August 30 water test. Jane’s reaction was “Holy cow!!” She
plans to get started in draft work with her lovely Newf, Ursala, this fall.
The solid oak wagon was donated by HANC member Jocelyn Hawley, who had purchased
it at the 1989 NCA National Specialty in Denver. She requested that the proceeds be
used to support the HANC draft test. And the proceeds were a whopping $420.00!
Thank you Joy for your generous donation. We’ll all look forward to seeing Jane and
Ursala showing off their wagon in the Snake Saturday Parade next March.

of Sept. 13 & 14 we are hosting our first All Breed Draft and Carting workshop at
Somerset Ridge Winery in Paola KS. The weekend of Sept 27 & 28 we are hosting
another practice session and a Draft Certificate Test at the same location. I have included
the link to Dogslife KC’s calendar that has all of the details (http://dogslifekc.com/
K9Calendar-DogEvents.html) . I would like to encourage everyone to come and help
as well as practice with your dogs.
Please contact me if you will be able to come to any of the dates or you have any
questions. We could use any draft equipment you have during the workshop so please
bring it with you. It is our hope that this will increase interest in our Spring Draft test
and introduce this great activity to many new dog lovers.

Thanks to Linda and Mark Larsen, her breeders, who

most curious, adventerous, and Mark’s pick because
she loved to give kisses. How could I not pick her?

Brags...who said you earn to have a new title to submit a brag???
Titles are for us humans, our dogs have no idea what a title is. We need to give our dogs
credit for all that they do, whether they earn a title or not, because they work for us...
they do the things we ask of them...unconditionally.
While Saphira and I did not come home with a title after the HANC Water Tests, I have
so very much to brag about and to be grateful for!
First, I am so very grateful to have such a wonderful companion in my life. Saphira
loves me without reservation and she will do anything in the world for me. We have a
bond that in most ways is deeper than I have with many humans because Saphira has
no vanity, no envy, no self-interest, and no animosity. What she does have is the virtues
of purity, temperance, charity, diligence, forgiveness, admiration, and humility.
Secondly, our training together is time that I truly value. I watch her learn and grow,
and I learn and grow along side of her...we teach each other. Her performance at the
water test was amazing and I am so very proud of the accomplishments she and I have
achieved together. This was a first for both of us; I had never trained a dog for WRDX
before and this was the first WRDX test we had ever entered. What she has done and
the performance she gave...she did this for me...because I asked her to. And she did so
for love alone.
As she performed the test exercises, I felt so much joy and pride; I could have literally
cried each time she completed an exercise. Her strength and beauty is something I will
cherish forever. Watching her rescue the three victims all at once, watching her go
under the raft for the victim; in every task she was asked to do, she truly represented
this wonderful breed and their working capabilities. I am so very proud of her.
No, we did not get a title, but Saphira has no idea that there are titles...what she does
know is that she is willing to do the things I ask of her and she knows that she is always
loved, regardless of whether she performs the task or not.
And I saw this in the other dogs on the beach and out in the water...they were ALL
giving their best performances, filled with the never ending love for their owners and
handlers. Truly a beautiful and amazing vision.

HANR, Inc
Heart of America Newfoundland Rescue, Inc (HANR) is a non-profit
organization recognized by the AKC-sanctioned Newfoundland
Club of America to do all in its power to protect and advance the
interests of Newfoundland dogs.
The purpose of HANR’s program is to rescue unwanted or homeless
Newfoundland dogs and place them in good homes. We work within
the guidelines of the Newfoundland Club of America’s Rescue
Committee.
It is our belief that a Newfoundland dog should not be acquired
casually or disposed of lightly but sometimes an owner’s
circumstances change and the Newf is found to be unsuited to his/
her present home. It is on these rare occasions that we try to find a
permanent new home where the Newfoundland will be loved and
respected for its unique combination of qualities.
A Newf is a very large commitment and will be part of your family for the next several years, therefore,
it is very important that you understand exactly what owning and caring for one means. Newfs are
wonderful dogs but they do require a lot of time, dedication and lots of love…love that they give back
two-fold.
HANR maintains a waiting list of pre-screened adoptive homes that are interested in acquiring a
Newfoundland dog. All Newfs placed by HANR are evaluated for temperament, vet checked, and
altered prior to being placed. Adoptions are made on a match basis; the background and needs of the
Newfoundland must match those of the prospective owners. While an adoption fee is charged, it does not
cover all of the costs involved in operating our rescue service so donations are accepted at any time.
Please make Donation Checks payable to: HANR.
Donations can be mailed to:

Newf Barkery!
Salmon “Crack”
Highly Addictive (legal) Dog Treats!
Ingredients
•
1 can (14.74 oz) Pink Salmon
•
2 cups Flour
•
2 Eggs
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Open a can of pink salmon. Don’t drain. Put salmon and its juices
into a large mixing bowl.
2. Crack and add two eggs. Dispose of shells. Flake salmon and mix it with the eggs.
3. Take the flour and mix it into the salmon/egg mixture. You don’t have to be precise with the flour
and may add more or less than recommended.
4. Spray a baking sheet with no-stick cooking spray and dump the dough mixture onto the sheet.
Sprinkle some flour on top of the dough and flour your hands to keep the dough from sticking to your
hands as you press the dough flat.
5. Press the dough out flat until it is about 1/4 inch thick. If you like moister Salmon Crack, you can
make it thicker. If you like crunchier Salmon Crack, you can make it thinner. You don’t need to make
perfect corners as this will later be broken into small treats for the dog. Just flatten it out into any old
shape. If the dough sticks to your hands, sprinkle flour on the top of the dough and/or re-flour your
hands.
6. Place the cookie sheet in the center of the oven. Let it cook for 25 - 35 minutes, depending on
whether you prefer moister Salmon Crack or crunchier Salmon Crack.
7. Remove from the oven. Use a spatula to lift your Salmon Crack off of the cookie sheet before
cooling, otherwise it may stick to your cookie sheet. You can let it cool on a rack or in the cookie sheet.
8. Once cooled, divide the Salmon Crack into desired portions, bag and freeze.
Note: As always, check with your veterinarian before giving your dog certain treats, remedies, supplements,
and medications.
