KOKOMO, HOWARD CO . The Miami Indians were settled in the Howard Cou nty area when settlers from the East began to arrive in the early 1800s. Early Indiana settler David Foster ran a trading post that becam e the site of the county seat in 1840. Foster donated forty acres and erected a log courthouse just north of Wildcat Creek. In return, the cou nty commissioners gave Fos ter the honor of naming the tow n. Foster is said to have named the city after Chief Kokomo.
