2012 Annual Report
2012 ANNUAL REPORT Adding Qu a l i t y o f L i f e to E a c h D a y Dear Friends of Seasons Hospice: – BOARD OF DIRECTORS – PRESIDENT: Timothy Hansen SECRETARY: Nancy Werning TREASURER: Carmen Pleschourt, CPA Randy Chapman Randy Greeson Aminah Jatoi, MD Carol Lingbeck As I look back on my time as President of the Seasons Hospice Board of Directors, a number of things stand out during this period. The professionalism and compassion of the staff clearly illustrates why Seasons Hospice is known for providing the “gold standard” of hospice and bereavement care in Southeastern Minnesota. The needs of the patient always come first, and that is never sacrificed for the “bottom line.” I also am very impressed by the commitment shown by the Board of Directors. This is a group of individuals who take their fiduciary and advisory responsibilities very seriously, and the stability of Seasons Hospice is a testimony to that. Steve Ronningen Pete Schuller C. Robert Stanhope, MD Judy Weller EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Beverly Haynes, RN MEDICAL DIRECTOR: Thomas Miller, MD Olmsted Medical Center Seasons Hospice Provides individualized and compassionate care, education and support for The organization experienced dramatic growth during 2012, both in terms of the number of patients cared for and in staffing needs. The administrative and homecare staff had moved their offices from the hospice house in 2004 to accommodate a growing staff. Additional growth necessitated another move in May 2012, after Seasons Hospice purchased and completely renovated the former American Family Insurance building on Greenwood Drive SW. This new space meets our present needs with plenty of expansion space for the future. We also were able to open the Center for Grief Education and Support, which provides a warm and welcoming environment for families of loved ones on our program as well as members of the community who are bereaved. I feel fortunate to have played a role in the continued evolution of Seasons Hospice and have every confidence that this fine organization will continue to flourish under the direction of Beverly Haynes, Executive Director and Dr. Bob Stanhope, incoming President of the Board of Directors. the dying and those who have experienced loss. Thank you. – SEASONS HOSPICE – 1696 Greenview Drive SW Rochester, MN 55902 phone: 507-285-1930 fax: 507-288-7251 Timothy Hansen, President Seasons Hospice Board of Directors www.seasonshospice.org www.seasonshospice.org | Annual Report 2 – Highlights of 2012 – •Seasons Hospice reached a milestone on August 10, 2012 when our daily patient census reached 80 patients which included patients receiving care in their homes and at the Seasons Hospice House. The total number of patients served in 2012 was 388 representing 33,515 patient days. •November 2012 marked the 15th anniversary of the Seasons Hospice House. Our first patient was admitted on November 3, 1997. •The Rochester Civic Theatre and Seasons Hospice staged our first ever collaboration with the theatrical production of “Tuesdays with Morrie.” The play ran for three days, with a private showing for the sponsor and two performances for the public. This event was made possible by a generous grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Rochester Group. •Volunteers continued to play a critical role for Seasons Hospice in 2012. The total number of direct and indirect care volunteers was 267. This represented 8,124 hours that volunteers donated to Seasons, which saved the organization $177,027. 3 Annual Report | www.seasonshospice.org •The new administrative and homecare office at 1696 Greenview Drive SW in Rochester was completed and staff moved in on May 3-4, 2012. The office space and separate rental space equals approximately 20,000 square feet. •The Center for Grief Education and Support has its own private area within the new office, with office space, a private counseling room and a warm and comforting group meeting space for support groups and gatherings. •Joan Elkins retired as Director of Volunteer Services in April, after serving Seasons Hospice in this capacity for the past eight years. Christine Humble was hired to replace her. Christine previously was Emergency Services Director for the Red Cross in Winona. •The Southeast Minnesota Honor Flight gave Seasons Hospice a very generous grant in excess of $10,000 in June. This grant was allocated to our Veterans Fund which provides financial assistance to veterans on our hospice program. – Seasons Hospice – On The Move – After months of designing, planning, organizing and packing, Seasons Hospice moved its administrative and homecare offices from its rented location at 1811 Greenview Drive SW to its newly purchased and completely renovated building at 1696 Greenview Drive SW, on May 3-4, 2012. Seasons purchased the former American Family Insurance building in 2011, and started the renovation in January 2012. With over 13,000 square feet, the new office space allows the homecare staff and administrative personnel to be housed in one unified area. The building also contains 6,000 additional square feet of unused commercial space for a tenant to lease. Our Hospice House, located in rural southwest Rochester was not part of this relocation and continues to operate at its current location. Relocating provided the opportunity for Seasons Hospice to review how processes flow and how team members work together. Beverly Haynes, Executive Director, said, “The new building provides us with the opportunity to configure the office space to enhance communication and increase efficiency within the interdisciplinary team. This allows for the continuation of providing excellent care to patients and families that Seasons Hospice is known for.” Some of the reconfiguration includes “team rooms” for RN/Patient Care Coordinators, LPN’s and Social Workers and other members of the interdisciplinary team. With team members in closer proximity to one another, it facilitates the daily discussion of patient care that is a core tenet of hospice care. Additionally, the new office includes a large conference space which enables Seasons Hospice to hold our volunteer trainings, educational programs and in-services on site. The Center for Grief Education and Support has its own wing to provide increased privacy to our bereavement clients. The Center houses a library and private consultation room for individual and family meetings. The group room is a welcoming space complete with a fireplace and large windows which look out on a lovely garden. Planning for the new facility had been underway for more than one year by the staff and Board of Directors as part of a strategic plan that positioned Seasons Hospice to better serve our clients and the community in the long term. “The completion of this project was a milestone in the continuing development of the organization and places Seasons Hospice on a clear path to future growth and development,” stated Tim Hansen, Board President. “It was the product of the vision, determination, perseverance and hard work of many people to whom we are sincerely grateful.” Pet Therapy Program Added to Services Seasons Hospice added pet therapy to our hospice services in 2012 for patients and their family members. The mission of the program is to provide comfort, support, love and animal companionship to patients and their families through the use of highly trained therapy dog teams comprised of a volunteer and therapy dog. Therapy dogs can be any breed, size, shape and color. No one particular breed is specifically suited to dog therapy work. The correct temperament is most important. A therapy dog is one who loves people and is well-socialized, even-tempered, calm, tolerant and polite. Therapy dog teams are comprised of a registered therapy dog and their handler functioning in a volunteer capacity. Molly Johnson, a consultant with Canine Comfort, LLC, was hired by Seasons Hospice to assist with the development of our therapy dog program as well as train the volunteer handlers and their dogs. Molly is highly credentialed in this area with various certifications in the field including graduating with honors from the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior. She also has extensive experience in end-of-life care throughout the last two decades working with various hospices in Wisconsin (continued on page 5) www.seasonshospice.org | Annual Report 4 Pet Therapy Program (contined from page 4) in the roles of volunteer coordinator, planning bereavement programs and serving as a hospice therapy dog volunteer. The benefits of the therapy dogs are many and can include: decreased anxiety and stress, diversion from physical discomfort, increased relaxation, reduced incidence of depression, expanded opportunities for laughter, joy and live review, alleviation of social and emotional isolation and boredom, fills animal companionship needs and comfort for the grieving. “Dogs have a way of giving unconditional love merely by their presence,” said Chris Humble, Director of Volunteer Services. “Our therapy dog program is another way Seasons Hospice strives to increase the quality of our patients’ lives.” Registered therapy dog teams visit hospice patients at their homes, which can include a private home, nursing home, assisted living facility, other residential facility or the Seasons Hospice House. – A Live & Love Affair Gala 2012 – When more than 330 people gather together with fun on their minds and generosity in their hearts, great things happen! This is exactly what occurred at the seventh annual “A Live & Love Affair” gala on November 17, 2012. Nearly $105,000 was raised for Seasons Hospice after expenses, making 2012 our most successful event to date. This event has raised more than $500,000 since it was started in 2006. This continuous outpouring of support has enabled Seasons Hospice to expand and adapt our services to meet the unique needs of our patients, their loved ones and others who have experienced loss. There are many ways to give to Seasons Hospice where your contribution will make a profound impact on the lives of the persons we serve. Massage Therapy and Music Therapy Funds Massage and music therapy are an important part of the array of services we provide to our patients. Neither of these services are reimbursable by insurance or Medicare/Medicaid, yet we offer them nonetheless because they add greatly to the quality of life and comfort of our patients. Center for Grief Education and Support Seasons Hospice’s Center for Grief Education and Support offers a broad range of services and programs in bereavement support for our patients, their families (including programs specifically designed for children) and members of the general community who have suffered the loss of a loved one, regardless of whether their loved one was on the Seasons Hospice program. All bereavement programs are offered free of charge, therefore our grief center is funded entirely through charitable contributions. Patient Care Fund This fund provides grants to individuals who wish to stay at our Hospice House, but cannot afford the cost of room and board at $185 per day. Most insurance providers/ Medicare/Medical Assistance do not cover residential hospice care. The patient care grant provides for up to 45 days of care. Veterans Care Fund The Veterans Care Fund was established in 2007 through generous grants from local and state veterans groups. The Fund is used in a variety of ways to assist dying veterans on our hospice program, from subsidizing the cost of care at the Hospice House to paying for travel expenses to fly active duty soldiers home to visit a dying veteran on our program as well as meeting other needs. A Live & Love Affair Gala Since its inception in 2006, the Seasons Hospice gala, A Live & Love Affair has raised over $500,000 in support of our hospice and bereavement programs. Not only is the gala a great way to spend an evening, it has become a significant fundraiser for Seasons. Circle of Remembrance Granite Pavers Circle of Remembrance granite pavers are available for purchase year round and provide a lasting way to remember your loved ones. The pavers are installed around the pond on the grounds of our Hospice House. For additional information on purchasing a paver, please contact the Seasons Hospice office. Endowment Fund The purpose of the Seasons Hospice endowment is to broaden our income base in order to secure the future of the organization. Any revenue that is expended is from the interest generated from the principal amount and supports special needs that arise. The endowment fund is overseen by a committee comprised of community and Seasons Hospice board members. Methods of Giving There are many ways to make a tax-deductible donation to Seasons Hospice. We gratefully accept gifts of cash, check, credit card, stock transfers, estate gifts, charitable remainder trusts and other planned gifts. To ensure the long term growth and viability of Seasons Hospice, we are appreciative of such deferred gifts as bequests. For more information, please contact Carolyn Piepho at Seasons Hospice, 507-285-1930, ext. 217 or visit our website at www.seasonshospice.org/donations. General Memorials/Donations Memorial gifts and general donations are gratefully accepted year-round and support patient care and bereavement programs at Seasons Hospice. www.seasonshospice.org | Annual Report 6 General Memorial/Donations Seasons Hospice gratefully acknowledges the support of the following individuals, foundations, funds and corporations for their generous gifts throughout 2012.
