Thankfully several companies in the Golden Crescent provide both of those to Habitat’s mission. Throughout our 20 year history, Dow Chemical Company has been a long-standing partner. Dow’s generosity includes sponsoring four Habitat homes in Victoria and various special events, such as the Habitat Holiday Open House and Speaking of Sweat Equity series. Dow also plays a major role as a national supporter of Habitat for Humanity International. The company was Habitat’s first national corporate partner, and since 1983, has been instrumental in the construction of almost 41,700 Habitat homes in the U.S. and 26 countries. “Dow employees at Seadrift have a long history of commitment of giving back to the communities we live in,” said Danny Cano, Associate Business Manufacturing Director for Dow and long-time Habitat volunteer. “Supporting Habitat has been an excellent way for us to engage our employees in making a positive difference in people’s lives by helping to provide families with a new home.” Dow employees and retirees are among Habitat’s most faithful volunteers, serving as construction supervisors, board members, construction house leaders, and event volunteers. Their knowledge and skills contribute significantly to Habitat’s mission of building homes, communities, and hope. “Habitat builds have been great team-building events for us as Dow employees coming together with a single purpose to make a new home for a family,” Cano said. “It has also allowed me to learn new hands-on skills from the house construction leaders.” The relationship between Habitat and Dow had a major milestone in 2004 when the organizations celebrated Habitat’s 50th house and Dow’s 50th anniversary of operating at the Seadrift site. This special 50th build was sponsored by Dow and was a Congressional Build which brought together U.S. Congressman Ron Paul, state and local officials, and community volunteers to build a home for a single mom and her four children. Cano remembered that the 50th build had a terrific turnout from Dow employees and volunteers who made quick work of getting the house built. He said that while volunteers build the houses, the families are the ones who make it a home. “My favorite Habitat moments have always been the presentation of the key to the homeowners,” he said. “The joy on their faces, especially the children, is payback for the many hours put into building their home. It is a gratifying transformational blessing to witness every time.” SPRING 2015 2 www.GoldenCrescentHabitat.org Homes Habitat to Launch 2015 Annual Giving Campaign “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3 NIV In April, Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity is launching the 2015 Annual Giving Campaign. After celebrating our 20th Anniversary, the campaign’s theme, Proverbs 16:3, sets our hearts and minds on the future and the important work still to be done. The Annual Giving Campaign raises the critical dollars that builds the infrastructure allowing Habitat’s mission to continue. Money raised pays the electric bills and puts gas in the construction truck. The campaign also enables our faithful donors to plan for their gifts in advance and to give meaningful, missionoriented gifts. These donations, which require minimal overhead expense to raise, provide the affiliate with the ability to plan for the year ahead and to remain fiscally sound. In 2015, six families will partners with Habitat by constructing simple, decent, affordable, homes. Please join our lead donors and give generously to the campaign so that Habitat can continue to build into the future. To donate, visit www.goldencrescenthabitat.org. Youth to Build a House this Spring The youth of the community are uniting to build a home this spring with Jennifer Rocha and her two children. House #87 will be predominantly constructed by youth and young adults, ages 16–25. Before construction began, area students were busy raising money for the house. Fundraisers in 2014 included the successful #GivingTuesday campaign in December with Ranch Hand Truck Accessories; a picnic table raffle; and events at Buffalo Wild Wings, Peter Piper Pizza, and Chick-fil-A. Funds from State Farm, Caterpillar, and two anonymous donors were also added to the youth’s efforts. In March, a group of college students from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburg, Penn. will spend their Spring Break in Victoria building the Youth United house. The University of Houston–Victoria chose to build with Habitat as its inaugural Day of Service project on April 11. There are plenty of weekends available for youth and their parents to build this house. Call Rebekah at 361-573-2511 to learn about volunteering or to schedule a group. Parents and guardians are encouraged to build with their children. Youth under 18 years old must have a parent-signed waiver before entering the job site and be accompanied by an adult. www.GoldenCrescentHabitat.org 3 SPRING 2015 Homes Women to Construct 20th All-Women Build House /#4-;174 %#.'0 “The House that Charlie and Dennis Built” This spring, Habitat will build its 20th All-Women Build—"The House that Charlie and Dennis Built.” Charlie Jones and Dennis Lockstedt were longtime volunteer construction supervisors with our affiliate. The Habitat family was sad to lose these two volunteers in 2014. Both men loved working with the All-Women Builds and were greatly appreciated in return. /CTEJ Ō – Collegiate Challenge (Carnegie Mellon students) /CTEJ – Speaking of Sweat Equity featuring Mark Schultz, author of “Foxcatcher” We’re calling all women (but men won’t be turned away!) to come build the house on Saturdays and Mondays. Call 361-573-2511 and speak to Le Anne to register individually or as a group. #RTKN – UHV Day of Service at Habitat build site Habitat is building in Victoria most Saturdays and Mondays through May 2015. Call 361-573-2511 and speak to Le Anne or Rebekah to volunteer. &QWDNG;QWT /QPG[ Many companies will match employee donations to charitable organizations. Please check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program or share your company’s name with us and we will check for you. It provides a great opportunity to increase your impact and spread the word on the important work Habitat is doing in our community. Habitat Seeking a Family or Individual to Partner With in Jackson County Do you know a family or individual in Jackson County in need of simple, decent, affordable housing? Habitat is looking to partner with them. Families or individuals must have a need for housing, have a sustainable income and ability to pay for a mortgage, and be willing to partner with Habitat. For more information, contact Rebekah Logan at 361-573-2511 or [email protected]. SPRING 2015 4 www.GoldenCrescentHabitat.org Communnities the focus of next Speaking of Sweat Equity The inspiring true story of an Olympian who took a life-altering tragedy and turned it into a story of triumph. 7 p.m. March 28 Victoria Fine Arts Center Habitat is proud to host Mark Schultz on March 28 as the featured speaker at its Speaking of Sweat Equity Series. Gold medal Olympian and two-time World champion freestyle wrestler, Schultz is the author of “Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother’s Murder, John du Pont’s Madness, and the Quest for Olympic Gold.” Like Habitat families, Schultz’s life has not been an easy path. The book is about his rise to the pinnacle of the world of wrestling, and how Schultz’s world crashed down around him when his brother Dave—his role model and wrestling partner— was murdered. But Schultz persevered through disappointments, hardships and tragedy. He will share his life experiences, along with his faith message, as he discusses “Wrestling with Overcoming the Odds and Life’s Obstacles.” “Foxcatcher” is a major motion picture loosely based on his story. It stars Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. The movie was nominated for three Golden Globes and five Oscars. At its Cannes Film Festival premiere, the movie won the Best Director prize. Tickets are on sale now at www.goldencrescenthabitat.org or at the Victoria Fine Arts Center box office. Ticket prices are $20, $30 and $50. Come be part of the fun! Habitat started a new group of volunteers—Habitat Young Professionals (HYP)—aimed to connect emerging leaders and socially conscious young adults through the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Those who are 25–35 years of age, or feel young at heart, are encouraged to participate. The group will build houses, have social events, partner with other local organizations, and mentor the Youth United group. If you are interested in joining, please contact Rebekah Logan at 361-573-2511 or [email protected]. &QPQT)QGU#DQXGCPF $G[QPF#HVGT*QWUG$NGUUKPI 1PGITGCVCURGEVQH*CDKVCVKUVJCV QPEGVJGJQWUGKUſPKUJGFTGNCVKQPUJKRU with partner families don’t end. In 2014, a Habitat donor was invited to attend a House Blessing, where volunteers and donors gathered to celebrate the completion of construction. The donor was so moved by the family’s gratitude that she decided to take homemade chicken soup to the family on moving day. The donor saw that there was minimal furniture, so she arranged to have necessary furniture delivered to their house! Since May 2014, she has logged more than 200 volunteer hours doing projects around the affiliate office, building in Goliad, and helping at the ReStore. In fact, when she heard the ReStore was low on staff, she volunteered more than 100 hours during her Christmas break! It is committed volunteers, such as Katherine, who make Habitat so successful. Chili cook-off raises nearly $1,500 for Habitat Team Chupacabra celebrates first place at Moonshine Drinkery’s inaugural chili cook-off. The event raised nearly $1,500 for Habitat, including the donation of the team’s $250 winning prize. SPRING 2015 6 www.GoldenCrescentHabitat.org Communities City of Victoria Honored Vesely Honored for 17 Years of Volunteering Sheila Vesely was honored at the Habitat Open House on Dec. 2 with the affiliate’s Charlie Jones Lifetime Achievement Award. She has been a faithful volunteer with Habitat for 17 years, including three terms on the Board of Directors, chair of the Family Selection Committee, member of the Speaking of Sweat Equity Committee, donor, and more. Vesely is a vice president at New First National Bank in Victoria. for Partnership with Habitat In December, Habitat honored the City of Victoria with the Dan Coleman Community Partnership Award. The city was chosen in August by the Habitat Advancement team because of its long-standing partnership, which includes land donations for nearly half of the affiliate’s 85 homes and its continued support of Habitat’s mission during the past 20 years. Matching Gifts Made a Big Impact in December Thanks to generous community donors and a matching gift from Ranch Hand Truck Accessories, Habitat’s inaugural #GivingTuesday campaign on Dec. 2 raised $7,020 in one day! Funds will be used to purchase roofing materials for the 2015 Youth United House. And thank you to a former board member and a current board member for combining forces to encourage donations in December with a matching gift of $1,500. Your end-of-year donations went above and beyond the matching gift. Help Fund Goliad House #3 After the success of #GivingTuesday, an anonymous donor was inspired to give a matching gift of $10,000 for the next Habitat house in Goliad. If you would like to contribute to the Goliad matching gift, please do so by using the enclosed remittance envelope and writing “Goliad House #3” as the designation. You may also donate online at www.goldencrescenthabitat.org with “Goliad House #3” written in the special notes section of the donation form or by contacting Habitat at 361-573-2511. www.GoldenCrescentHabitat.org 7 SPRING 2015 Hope /GGVVJG(COKNKGU New Milestone Celebrated Meet two of the Habitat partner families who will build this year. at Habitat In 2014, the Silva family celebrated a new kind of milestone for our Habitat affiliate—paying off their mortgage…early! Liz is excited at the prospect of living next door to her close friend of many years, Lupe Gaitan. The Silva family built Habitat House #10 in 1997. Since then, all four children have graduated from college (including one with a master’s degree). The Silvas chose to turn an unexpected bonus back into their home by retiring their note. “If it wasn’t for Habitat we wouldn’t be homeowners,” said Naomi Silva. “We were so excited when we paid off our mortgage. We worked hard for our house, and our grown children still consider it their home.” Build Hope Throughout the Year For $20 a month, less than it costs to take the kids out for burgers, you could light up a Habitat home’s living and dining rooms in one year! Guadlupe ‘Lupe’ Gaitan wants her two youngest daughters, Star CPF#PIGN to have a stable, grounded home to grow up in. Her daughter, Star, had positive changes in her life after attending Habitat’s youth team building session with Emmitt Smith in 2013.
