A.B.L.E. Programs
and Services
Operation A.B.L.E.’s mission is deeply rooted in the belief that seasoned, experienced, and well-trained “mature” workers are
indispensable to an employer’s productivity, viability, and competitive position. Yet for many jobless Baby Boomers the skills
that kept them employable for so long are simply not enough to get them back into the workforce.
Our offerings are designed in close partnership with public, private, and non-profit employers to ensure that the programs
and services we provide are relevant to the needs of today’s workplace and help our participants compete successfully in a
historically difficult job market.
For Job Seekers we provide:
ABLE Beginnings
W.E.A.T.
Six-week program in introductory computer and Internet navigation skills needed to compete aggressively
in today’s job market.
Twelve-week computer and office/administrative skills training program followed by a six-week
employer-based internship.
Fourteen-week program focusing on green and renewable energy and weatherization-related jobs.
The Senior Community Service
Employment Program (SCSEP)
U.S. Department of Labor program available to low-income individuals age 55 and older, providing
paid, on-the-job training and job search assistance.
Quincy Computer Skills and Job
Readiness Program
Open-ended, individualized Microsoft Office and job readiness training program for Quincy public
housing residents that is provided through a partnership with the Quincy Housing Authority.
ABLE Volunteers
Strategic volunteer services program provides quality matches and placement of professional adults age
55+ into strategic skills-based volunteer positions at non-profit organizations in Greater Boston.
Offered to job seekers looking to make the most of their job search activities.

Operation A.B.L.E. of Greater Boston … Because Meaningful Employment Should be an Option for Everyone
Operation A.B.L.E. is
a Champion in Action!
On January
19, 2011,
Operation
A.B.L.E. of
Greater Boston
was recognized
as a Citizens
Bank Champion
in Action for
our outstanding
contributions
to the Greater
Boston
community. Citizens Bank of Massachusetts President
Jerry Sargent presented us with a very generous check,
and Skip Perham of New England Cable News aired
a video about Operation A.B.L.E. that the station
produced and aired periodically over a three month
period. The station also created an informative
Operation A.B.LE. brochure that was available for
90 days at every Citizens Bank branch office in
Massachusetts. Many A.B.L.E. Board members past and
present, funders, employer partners, job seekers, and
A.B.L.E. employees were on hand for the presentation
ceremony and to help celebrate.

Operation A.B.L.E’s Job Fair
For Mature Workers
On January 11, 2011, 20 of Greater Boston’s premier employers and over 400 mature job seekers gathered at the Radisson
Hotel Boston to either find great candidates or great employers. Job seekers could also meet with a Human Resources expert to
review their resume at our Resume Clinic or practice responses to interview questions at our Interview Clinic. For four hours,
the lines to meet with a counselor extended out the door and around the corner. As in previous years, we hosted information
sessions for job seekers on Applying for Work in the Internet Age and Overcoming Age Barriers, a Job Doc Q&A Session, and
a Making Ends Meet Panel Discussion. Job seekers felt these were very valuable additions to the Job Fair. Oldies 103.3 kept the
mood upbeat with music, drawings and fun outside of the Job Fair. To top it off, we had the best media coverage ever of one
of our job fairs. There were radio interviews on WBZ 1030 and AM 1510; television coverage on NECN and Fox 25 Morning
News; and an AP photographer was there taking photos for a larger national story on unemployment.

Graduation Day 2011
On June 28, 2011, 91 A.B.L.E. graduates participated
in our Graduation 2011 ceremony at the Boston
Federal Reserve Bank. These are students who
completed one of our training and employment
programs: Skills2Work, W.E.A.T, ABLE Beginnings,
or Operation EmployABLE at the Quincy Housing
Authority. Our keynote speaker was Conny Doty,
Director of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino’s Office
of Jobs and Community Services. In addition, we had
two student speakers, Ron Saucier and Walter Allen,
who both spoke eloquently about their experience
upgrading their skills in one of A.B.L.E.’s programs.
Another great moment was when graduate Louise
Cabral treated the audience to her rendition of “The
Climb”. Operation A.B.L.E. was very fortunate to
have such talented students and speakers participate
in our Graduation ceremony this year.

The Starfish Thrower Fable
Once upon a time, there was a man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had the habit of walking along the
beach before he began to work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure
moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day, so he began to walk faster to catch
up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead, he was reaching down to the
shore, picking up something and very gently, throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he called out, “Good morning! What are you
doing?” The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing
starfish into the ocean.”
“I guess I should have asked, “why are you throwing starfish into
the ocean?”
“The sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them
in, they’ll die.”
“But young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of
beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference.”
The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked up another
starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves. “It made a
difference for that one.”

Operation A.B.L.E. of Greater Boston … Because Meaningful Employment Should be an Option for Everyone
with Thomas p. o’neill III as our
2011 starfish thrower
Operation A.B.L.E. celebrated our 29th Anniversary of
providing employment and training opportunities to mature
workers 45 and older on May 17, 2011. We marked the
occasion in style with the North Shore Acapella group
opening up the program and Jimmy Tingle serving as our
lively Emcee. Two mature workers, Theresa Haymon and
Carmen Santiago, who successfully transitioned back to
work after completing one of our employment and training
programs, were recognized.
It was then time to honor our 8th Starfish Thrower,
Thomas P. O’Neill III. He regaled us with stories about
growing up in the O’Neill family and how he learned from
an early age how important it is to give back to others. Tom
serves on a host of Boards and has raised millions of dollars
for non-profit organizations such as Operation A.B.L.E. He
was the perfect honoree and we were so delighted that we
could honor him as our 2011 Starfish Thrower.

“At age 59, as a newly trained and
unemployed Microsoft Certified
Professional in Database & System
Administration, all I heard was that I
needed more experience to get hired. So
after taking Operation A.B.L.E.’s
10-week refresher course in MS Office,
I began working for the agency as an
IT Administrator through the Senior
Community Service Employment
Program during this time. For
the next two years, I developed additional technology skills and gained
experience working in a corporate IT environment. With the help of their
IT Manager and the skills I had learned, I was able to land a permanent
IT position at MAB Community Services. Everyday I learn something
new, and every day I am grateful for the opportunity that Operation
A.B.L.E. gave me to reinvent myself.”

at a hotel bar. Now, I am a veteran
helping other veterans transition
to civilian life. Rose Hom taught
me the nuts and bolts of computer
applications; Anne Chace, selfassessment and interviewing
techniques. It was not easy for me to
go back to school after so many years,
but trial and error and self-doubt
soon led to accomplishment and confidence. Whenever I got discouraged,
I just kept my eye on the prize. Thanks to Operation A.B.L.E., I
have the skills I need to deliver services that are both beneficial to the
veterans I serve and meaningful to me.”
