Celebrating the Spirit of Tremont
Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival September 17-18, 2011
Alfred, NY. A full time self-employed ceramic artist,
Angelica divides her time between public art, tile and
sculptural studio work, teaching workshops on tile making
and architectural ceramics and often serves as an artist-inresidence on large tile/mosaic projects in school and
community settings. Recipient of an OAC Individual Artist
Fellowship, she is in the permanent collection of Museum of
Art & Design and private collection of Lebron James. She is
the author of "Making & Installing Handmade Tile," which
was published in the spring of 2005, by Lark Books, a
division of Sterling Publishers. Her most recent book,
“Ceramics for Beginners: Surfaces, Glazes and Firings,”
was published in August, 2010. Examples of her work,
which has been exhibited widely can be seen on her
website, www.angelicapozo.com.
For the sixth year, the Festival will be sponsoring an
"Emerging Artists Booth" — (chaired by program
coordinator, Jonathan Amy) for a limited number of
up-and-coming local artists (twelve this year) who would like
to gain experience in showing their works. Criteria for
entrance are as follows: artist must have no prior festival
experience; artist may display up to 5 pieces of art; artist
shall pay a fee of $5 per each piece sold (there is no upfront
application or display fee); artist shall be present at the
booth for a minimum of 4 hours during the course of the
festival; additional information at
www.Facebook.com/people/Tremont-Emerging-Artists.
The Festival will also have music and dance
performances both Saturday and Sunday on one main
stage located near Kenilworth Avenue between West 14th
Street and West 11th Street. The Music and Entertainment
sub-committee is chaired by Tremont resident, Barbara
McKay. Sound and Stage Manager is Dennis McNulty of
Slate Grey Services. Slate Grey has participated each and
every year of the Festival!
Admission to the Festival is free. The Festival is
presented by Merrick House, Tremont West Development

The Thirteenth Annual Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival
returns to Lincoln Park—Starkweather and West 14th Street—
on Saturday, September 17th from 11am to 6pm and
Sunday, September 18th from Noon to 5pm. The mission of
the Festival is to celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity of
Tremont and Greater Cleveland by encouraging the artistic and
cultural endeavors of its visual and performing artists.
The weekend Festival is comprised of four categories or
program areas which include: Children’s—hands-on arts and
educational projects; Community—area non-profit organizations
presenting material about their mission and services; Cultural—
food sales by Tremont churches, other non-profit organizations,
and regional restaurants reflecting the ethnic diversity of
Northeast Ohio; and Artist—sales of paintings, sculpture,
jewelry, ceramics, photographs and more by Tremont and
Northeast Ohio artists. Eighty-seven juried artists are eligible
for consideration by the jurors for the Festival’s top three prizes.
The Jurors include: Jeffry Chiplis, who was born and raised
in Indianapolis, Indiana, earned a B.F.A. in Sculpture at Indiana
University, and has been a resident of Tremont for 25 years.
Jeffry’s sculptural installations consist of forms and phrases
using parts from discarded or retired neon signs and various
types of new and vintage transformers. Jeffry does not bend
glass for neon, but instead finds new meaning and intention for
the abandoned signs that otherwise might be sent to a landfill.
He has shown with critical acclaim at the White Box Gallery in
New York City, and had a piece in the Cleveland Museum of
Art’s NEO show. Jeffry was a resident artist on behalf of the
Dilna Residency and Symposium in Mikulov, Czech Republic.
He has shown at Art Metro, Studio Gallery, Beecher Center for
Art & Technology, the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery, and in
many group shows in the Ohio area. Jeffry continues to serve as
one of the original board members of SPACES Gallery in
Cleveland; Dana L. Depew, who grew up in a large family on a
farm in rural Medina, Ohio. At an early age, he was fascinated
by the intricacies of how things worked. He began taking things
apart and attempted to put them back together for curiosity’s
sake. Dana was formally educated in the arts at Kent State
University with a concentration in sculpture. His current work
focuses heavily on the usage of found objects and resurrecting
discarded materials into wholly new vibrant works. Dana opened
Asterisk Gallery in 2001, which for 10 years was an exhibition
space in Tremont that gave much needed opportunities to
emerging regional artists. As well as exhibiting his work in
exhibitions nationally, Dana is tireless in promoting the arts by
curating exhibitions, judging art competitions and serving on the
board of directors of several arts and cultural organizations;
Angelica Pozo, a New York City native, born of Cuban and
Puerto Rican parents, has lived in Cleveland since 1984. She
moved here from Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she received her
Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. Her
Bachelor of Fine Arts is from SUNY College of Ceramics in

Innerbelt Bridge Project Update
Crews have been busy completing the first two lanes of
pavement replacement on the bridges that carry I-90
through downtown Cleveland. In late August, traffic was
moved onto those new lanes and the work zone is now in
the middle of the I-90 bridges, between eastbound and
westbound traffic. Crews will be ready to switch again,
moving their work to the far south edge of these downtown
bridges around October 1, 2011.
The completion of the surface building demolition at the
Cold Storage facility may bring about some roadway
changes in Tremont. This is being researched.
Once all the materials from the Cold Storage building
have been removed from the site, crews can begin the
sequence of soil removals that will gradually cut away the
Tremont Bluff. Large quantities of excess soil will be
removed, so that the Bluff will be stable and support more
recreational space near the river. The Towpath Trail will be
one of the opportunities on the newly excavated section.
This design will also provide more stable soil for the

foundations for the new I-90 bridge being built.
Around Labor Day, work also began to widen the W 14th Street exit from I-90 west. This
ramp must be widened to bring it closer to the existing bridge. Late in 2011, or even early
2012, crews will then close the Abbey Avenue Loop Ramp, and all traffic from I-90 west will
use the W 14th ramp to reach their favorite Tremont destinations. The existing Abbey
Avenue loop ramp will be demolished, and construction will begin for the new Abbey
Avenue loop that will connect to the new I-90 west bridge, once it is complete.
Our next “Construction Conversation” will be held during the Tremont Summer Safety

“Tremont gets an A+ in Sustainability “Cutting Edge LED Sidewalk Lighting” 
Come “Flip the Switch” & celebrate the City of Cleveland’s 1st successful 
installation of LED Sidewalk Lighting down Tremont’s Professor Avenue! 
Following in the footsteps of Charles F. Brush (In the 1880’s, he invented the first electric 
arc street light located in Cleveland Public Square), Tremont will be the 1st neighborhood
in Cleveland to install sustainable LED lighting. Ohio becomes the 15th State in the USA to
use LED Sidewalk Lighting..
This great idea was decided upon by 700 people in Northeast Ohio who came to a
10,000 Little (micro) Ideas organization event 2.5 years ago, who brainstormed how to
improve the City of Cleveland’s lifestyle. IDEA – to improve the patron base of Cleveland
by having better sidewalk lighting, which would allow for visitors and patrons to feel safer
while visiting the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Decision made: Use modern, and
architecturally sophisticated LED lighting on the building’s storefront to improve sidewalk
lighting in the City of Cleveland.
Full steam ahead, the 10,000 Lighting Team formed and ventured into Tremont creating
the 10,000 Tremont Lighting Project. The Team members consist of the Tremont
Neighborhood & Business owners, and Tremont West Development Corp., & supported by
City of Cleveland Councilman, Joe Cimperman, Cook Paving and Construction, Ullman
Electric Co., and the City of Cleveland Economic Development Department (NRAP).
Come join us on September 9 2011, during Tremont’s Artwalk, to celebrate the lighting
debut. Festivities begin 8:30pm at the corner of Professor and College Avenues in Tremont
After numerous months of research from working with GE and Philips lighting divisions, to
many engineering consultants such as Doty & Miller Architects, the 10,000 Tremont
Lighting Team has chosen to implement the Edge-LED & the Owl-LED Area light. These
LED Lights were strategically placed to create a more visible storefront and to brighten the
sidewalks down Professor Avenue.
The Team found that LED lights are better for our environment and on our wallets,
with an annual operating cost averaging 70% less than HID lights (approximately
$35/yr). The Edge-LED light has a slim, low profile design, weather-tight LED driver
compartment with a rugged housing made out of cast aluminum, as well as having an open
grated top resulting in self-cleaning thus making this LED light one of the greenest products
on the market right now. The Edge-LED light is manufactured by BetaLED (Wisconsin,
USA based Company) and consist of 95% of the LED Lights purchased for this project.
The 10,000 Tremont Lighting Team was able to fully fund the installation and purchasing
of the LED Lights by receiving grant funding, and through a Tremont restaurant fundraiser
(Lago, Parallax, Fahrenheit, Treehouse and Bistro on Lincoln Park) to support the project.
Without the help of this outside funding, the price for each LED light fixture and installation
costs would have exceeded $1,000.00 per LED light installation. The only cost to the
building owner is the electricity upon installation, the LED light fixture will become the
property of the building owner. Learn more at http://www.10000littleideas.com.

Applewood Centers will
Celebrate New Murals!
The Jones Campus of Applewood Centers located
at West 25th and Daisy Avenue is continuing their
summer mural program for 2011. The collaborative
summer mural institute with Building Bridges
Director Katherine Chilcote and local artist Tally
Fruchtman-Rossiter started Monday, June 13 and
will continue through early September 2011.
According to Kelly Murray, LISW-S, Director of
Residential Services, the mural program is a great
learning experience for the children at Applewood.
The Center has been adding art to many of its
rooms and hallways, which makes the environment
more friendly and allows the children to personalize
and take pride in the spaces.
The projects currently underway are a mural in the
gymnasium and a public mural that will be mounted
on the outside of the building. The gym mural was
designed by Tally Fruchtman-Rossiter and depicts
silhouettes of children playing various sports, along
with portraits of leadership figures such as Martin
Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey and their
inspirational quotes. It was designed to reflect the
identity of both the children using the facility and the
surrounding community that uses the space for
community meetings and events. The exterior
mural was designed by Building Bridges’ Katherine
Chilcote and depicts children playing in and around
an apple tree. This 16 ft by 24 ft mural will be
mounted on the north wall of the building, facing
Daisy Avenue, and will be visible to neighbors as
well as children entering the building. A community
ribbon cutting and mural dedication ceremony is
planned for the installation and multi-purpose space
on September 22, 2011 from 4pm – 6pm. The
children from Applewood Centers have enjoyed
working alongside professional artists to create

The annual Auburn-Lincoln Park Cleanup & Cookout was held on
Thursday, August 4th to spiff up the park for the special events of
Arts in August. Around 6 residents helped with the clean-up and
the weeding of flower beds around gazebo square (many thanks,
folks!) Following the cleanup efforts, residents adjourned across
the street to the beautiful garden courtyard of the Lincoln Park
Bathhouse for a delicious and fun summer cookout. Around 18
residents and 2 guests attended the cook-out. Our thanks to Kerry
Capwell and the residents of the Lincoln Park Baths lofts for
hosting us and to all who attended and participated! Thanks as
well to our “grill chefs” that evening, Jim Votava and Greg Golden.
Hope that you’ve enjoyed the summer sunshine and the special
events in Lincoln Park. For more information on the block club,
contact our Co-Chairs, Frank Tkacz –[email protected]—and Kerry
Capwell – [email protected]— or Scott at Tremont West at
216.575.0920 or [email protected]. Our next
block club gathering will be Thursday, September 8th at 7pm,
when we return to the garden courtyard of the Lincoln Park
Baths lofts. Please join us!
more information to the block club for those who have polling or
registration questions. If you’d like to get a hold of Cosby, his
email is [email protected]. Next, Andy Thomas, the new
Neighborhood Safety Coordinator for Tremont and Ohio City,
introduced himself to the block club and we discussed safety
concerns. A few residents were concerned with a rash of crimes
that happened in July, including a shooting on W. 14th St. The
gas stations and apartment buildings were mentioned numerous
times as potential targets of origination that the block club could
work with to reduce safety concerns. These issues were
discussed at the August TWDC Safety Committee meeting and
Andy agreed to talk with the gas station owners. Block club
members are writing a letter of concern to the owners of the
apartment building located south of Clark Ave. as well. Issues
concerning the bus shelter at the corner of W. 14th St. and Clark
Ave. were discussed again, and the block club leaders sent a
petition for a trash can into the Division of Waste. There is now a
trash can in place beside the shelter that should alleviate
problems with refuse. The block club has also decided to petition
the RTA in order to have the #81 bus run overnight to Steelyard
Commons. There was no update on the public meeting
concerning the impound lot on Quigley. TWDC will inform
Tremont residents when the final meeting date has been
announced. Please join us for our next meeting on
Wednesday, September 7th, 6:30pm at the Clark Bar.

At the Central Tremont Block Club meeting in July, the members
heard from Chris Alvarado, President of TWDC’s Board of
Directors. Chris made a presentation on the guidelines for BOZA
that were adopted by the Board. The guidelines outline the
procedure for businesses or residents seeking variances and their
interactions with Block Clubs and TWDC Committees. This
presentation was made at the request of Central Tremont Block
Club members and we thank Chris for the presentation. At the
August block club meeting, the members look forward to meeting
Jim Votava, their new community organizer, and hearing a
presentation from ICan Schools. The next meeting will be held
on September 27th at 6:30pm at TWDC.
Duck Island
We join with residents in Duck Island in grieving the passing of
"Pa Po”, Miguel La Torres, the father of our friend and neighbor,
Bert Latorres . Bert and his family have been a mainstay in our
community for many years. The presence of his father will surely
be missed. PaPo LaTorres supported our Block Club for years until
his illness thwarted his efforts last year. Please join us for tribute to
Mr. Latorres. Our Condolences are extended to Bert, his mother,
Serafina, and his family....God Bless You......It has been quite hot
at periods this summer, so everyone please let’s make a special
effort to remember our Quality of Life Ordinances as we spend
more time outside for various activities. Remind our teens and
young adults to be considerate of their neighbors as they “chill out”
in the summer night air. We still have a few pamphlets left for
those who wish. Also please be mindful of our pets running free
especially during peak business hours, so as to not hamper mail
delivery or interfere with children and adults out and about. Special
guests at the August meeting included a staff member and intern
from Ohio City, Inc. who updated us on a ballot initiative that may
come up at the November general election regarding a Sunday full
liquor license for the new Crop Bistro opening in Ohio City. The
precinct in which Crop Bistro will be located also includes Duck
Island voters south of Abbey, and extends into northern Tremont.
Following the meeting residents were invited down to the Home
Depot parking lot of Steelyard Commons for the annual celebration
of National Night Out Against Crime. Around 4,000 – 5,000
residents of Cleveland’s west side attended the popular and
informative family-oriented event! Our new Duck Island banners –
long in process – have now been installed in gateways to our
neighborhood! Our thanks to Dean Guernsey of Dynamic Sign and
Tremont West for the installation! Our September meeting brings
representatives of various area businesses to talk with our
residents. For more information on the block club and its activities,
or to share items of interest or concern in the neighborhood, Duck
Island Block Club Chair, Alicia Hudson, can be reached at
[email protected] or 216.443.1296/216.443.0470 home/
office – or contact Scott at Tremont West at 216.575.0920. Please
join us at Abbey Park on Tuesday, September 6th at 6 pm!

Block club members and neighbors enjoyed a thoroughly
awesome summer day at our neighborhood picnic on Saturday,
August 6th. Well over 40 people were in attendance during the
course of the day. Thanks to our membership, neighbors,
stakeholders, TWDC staff, TWDC Board members, other
Tremont block club leaders, and especially our gracious host and
co-sponsor the Tremont Tap House for making this a very
successful event. Special thanks go out to our membership that
provided side dishes and supplies. We also appreciate Phil
Pavarini’s community support with stopping by with a handful of
Pizza’s which were quickly devoured. The Tap House also
provided a gift certificate as a door prize won by a neighbor.
Thanks again for everyone’s participation and support. Lets get
ready to meet September 8th and get back to moving our part of
Tremont forward in a positive direction. The next meeting will
be Thursday, September 8th, 6pm at Zion Church.
Metro North
At our late July meeting we had several special guests including
Anne Hill, Community Relations Manager at MetroHealth, who
updated us on plans for re-construction of MetroHealth Drive and
proposed changes in traffic and parking patterns along Valentine
and W. 17th that will result for several months this Fall. Also
participating in the meeting were the Pastor Jose Reyes and
several members of Iglesia Nueva Vida/New Life Church on
Holmden. They recently met with Commander Keith Sulzer of the
Second District Police, staff of Tremont West and the City’s
Community Relations Department to address residents and
police concerns regarding noise, music performances, and litter.
Residents voiced their concerns and a good dialogue was held
between residents and church members. A good channel of
communication has been opened, and the pastor and church
members expressed a willingness to work along with residents
cooperatively on items and activities of mutual interest and
concern. Ward 14 Councilman, Brian Cummins, Cleveland
Community Relations representative, Dennis Ancell, TWDC
Board member, Henry Senyak and Lt. Frank Bolon of the Second
District Police also fielded residents’ questions and concerns at
the meeting. On the schedule for the late August meeting is a
general discussion on crime and safety concerns in the Metro
North and Scranton corridor area, and an opportunity to meet
and greet Andy Thomas, the new shared Safety Coordinator for
Tremont and Ohio City. Andy will also be addressing housing
code concerns in Ward 14 Tremont. The membership looks
forward to welcoming him and sharing items of interest and
concern. For questions or more information about our block club,
please contact Chair, Sandy Smith – [email protected] –
and Co-Chair, Sue Krosel. – or contact Scott at Tremont West at
216.575.0920. Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, September 27th – 6 pm – at the ground floor meeting
room of St. Michael’s Church. We look forward to your visit!
North of Literary
At the August Block Club meeting we started the meeting with a
guest speaker from We Are Ohio, Cosby Johnson. He discussed
his organization’s campaign to repeal Ohio’s Senate Bill 5, which
will be Issue 2 on the upcoming November ballot. He also
encouraged the residents to register to vote and will pass along
Around 40 residents and 5 guests attended the August 16th
annual Summer Party at the “Stonehenge” tree lawn of Deane
Malaker (on the corner of West 7th & Literary). It was a great

Old Tremont
The Old Tremont Block Club is looking for new leadership!
Several residents have expressed an interest in working together
on activities for youth, healthy food and gardens, and
neighborhood clean-ups. If you are interested in becoming
involved or would like to take a leadership role in the Old
Tremont Block Club, please call Jim at TWDC, 216-575-0920.
South of Jefferson
At the August South of Jefferson Block Club meeting, members
heard a presentation from Cosby Johnson of We Are Ohio, a
coalition that has come together to repeal SB 5. Members can
visit www.weareohio.com for more information on the initiative.
Members also discussed parking issues and how to handle
blocked driveways. On Saturday, August 13th the South of
Jefferson Block Club Party was held from 1-4pm under sunny
skies at Tremont Pointe. Around 100 residents turned out to
enjoy games, music and food. Party highlights also included free
school supplies, a bounce house and a face painter. Officer Jeff
Stanczyk of the Cleveland Police Department delighted
partygoers with his Kids Magic Safety Show. Prizes were given
out to winners in the three-legged race and marshmallow run and
SOJ member Rachel Dissel brought crafts for the kids. The block
club would like to thank SOJ member Barb Sper for spearheading
this successful event and the generous donation from
Councilman Joe Cimperman, who also attended the event. A
good time was had by all thanks to the hard work of SOJ
members and generous donations from Istanbul Grill, Emily’s
Petite Salon, Wine & Design, Lilly Handmade Chocolates,
Banyan Tree, The Flying Monkey Pub and Tremont Scoops Ice
Cream. The next South of Jefferson Block Club meeting will
be held on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00pm at the The
Flying Monkey Pub. Come out and meet our new Neighborhood
Safety Coordinator Andy Thomas and discuss your concerns.
This month’s raffle prize will be a $25 gift certificate to Emily’s
Petite Salon.
Friends of Clark Field
Come join us on September 2nd at Clark Field for the movie Yogi
Bear. The movie is about saving Jellystone Park and how
important our Parks are to the environment as well as a place to
visit and enjoy the outdoors. Yes, the Ranger will be there
seeking Yogi's help?? Of course a pic-a-nic basket or several are
involved, as always with Yogi Bear and his sidekick Boo-Boo.
Bring your own pic-a-nic basket and enjoy a picnic before the
movie. Come early for a craft that involves decorating your own
bears. Free popcorn, candy and juice while it lasts. There will
also be a drawing at the end of the movie. Let's support our Park
and enjoy the timeless characters of Yogi Bear, Boo-Boo and
Ranger. Yes, there is a young woman environmentalist in the
movie also.

Siblings Ed and Adele inherit an
enormous aviary that their late father
built for his deceased wife, whose soul,
he believed, had transformed into the
body of a wren. The grown children are
faced with the dilemma of what to do
with the crumbling structure – sister-inlaw Jane wants to build tidy new
houses; friend Olivia wants to build
The Church of the Fifth Day honoring
birds and the Fifth Day of creation; Ed
wants to let the building fall to the
ground. Folded into this debate are
issues of religious conviction, fear of
commitment, the way Russian ballet
resembles a hockey game, and the
courtship of Ed by Tom, a gay
professional hockey player.
Enjoy an outdoor tailgate atmosphere
while enjoying The Ohio State Buckeyes
vs. Miami Hurricanes and other exciting
college football match-ups on up to four big
screen TVs! Benefitting the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Cleveland, the event features
typical tailgate fare including burgers,
brats, hot dogs, hummus, beer, wine
games raffles and much more. Food and
beverages are provided by The Southside.
Individual tickets are $30 in advance and
$40 at the door. Corporate sponsorships
are available. Please visit
