The Kandahar Review 2001
The four years I spent in the British Children’s Team was fantastic!
th
What a great start, off to Whistler for my first Children’s Team race and I came 8 in the slalom.
We also had a stretch limo sightseeing Vancouver . The plane trip was very long but we got to
watch films so it wasn’t too bad.
In the following years I raced for the Children’s Team around Europe.
Andorra was great; the opening ceremony was on the mountain skiing the slope carrying our flag.
Topolino (the top race) we paraded through the streets with the flag, the accommodation was
brilliant and the food excellent. Pinocchio, the last race of the season is always so well organised.
The atmosphere there is amazing, the organisers seem to enjoy hosting this race with lots of
entertainment off the slopes.
During my time in the Team I went to the Aspen 24hour race with the British Ski Academy to
support the Bell brothers. Ross Rennie and I were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to
forerun the race. This was one of the great times, mixing with film stars and meeting Cindy
Crawford, what a story to tell my friends at home.
During all this time it was great to have Willie Taunton-Burnett as trainer. Who was also at the
British Ski Academy for a lot of the time I was there. Thanks to Willie Taunton-Burnett, Dave
Renouf and other Kandahar trainers I have now been offered a place in the British Youth Team.

All England Slalom Championships 1999 - An observation
Given the amount of bad press which "Young People" are
given from time to time, I would like to share a moment which
I was fortunate enough to witness at Hemel.
I had spent much of the day at or near the top of the course and had naturally witnessed the "friendly"
banter which always accompanies start-gate proceedings. Prior to his first run, I was chatting to Ed
Drake as Marc Telling entered the taped start area. Ed lowered his voice and confided that " ... he really
wanted to beat Marc. He's my main rival". I thought little about Ed's comment at that time. We watched
Marc's run with Ed reflecting that he would need to ski well to beat Marc. I made a point of watching Ed's
run and indeed it was good enough to secure a first run advantage of just 31/100's of a second over
Marc.
The incident in question occurred after the first run and during the build up to the all important second
and final run of Saturday's Individual Championship.I was sitting watching the early runs of the Boys &
Girls race when suddenly the quiet was interrupted by a shout (& curse if memory recalls). It turned out
that Marc (Telling) had sliced his thumb whilst sharpening his skis.
Nothing new there - everyone's done that and most of us have lived to tell the tale. What really
caught my attention was the event which followed. Ed (Drake) who was sitting near-by jumped up and
having checked Marc would live, went over to the skis which Marc had been working on, and without
any hesitation picked up the file and continued to sharpen the ski's of his sworn rival.
I stood some distance away and watched with interest. I have to say that I am convinced that Ed put
at least as much effort into sharpening Marc's ski's (and possibly a little more) as he did on his own.
During the ten minutes or so which Ed spent working on Marc's skis I suspect I was the only one who
noticed this tiny side-show - for anyone who didn't know would simply imagine that Ed was working on
his own skis.
Considering the very high pressure which our National Championships place on our young skiers I
thought that Ed's actions were all the more remarkable.
How easy it would have been to ignore the dilemma which Marc faced or look the other way and
count one's blessings whilst thinking - "one less opponent to worry about" !!
I am proud to be involved in a sport where young people are able to demonstrate that winning at all
costs is not really winning at all.
Thank you Ed, for helping to restore my faith in young people and the future of English skiing. This
event has been a source of much pleasure to me and I include it here so that you may share in it.
Yours in skiing
