Kim Keprios Chief Executive Officer Peter King Board Chair THE ARC 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 1 Opening Doors to a Good Life The Door to Health Care In Mary’s family, adoption is a tradition. She and her sisters were adopted, and now she has three adopted children of her own. All of Mary’s children started out in life with challenges. Jo has Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Peter has Autism, and Christian has Central Audio Processing Disorder. Mary worked hard to obtain the help they needed, but it was a struggle. “All I did was fight,” she said. In 2014, the family moved from Missouri to Minnesota, where Mary grew up. She found The Arc Greater Twin Cities while looking for services and within days, she was meeting with her Arc advocate, Jen. The biggest challenge was health insurance. “I filled out the MNsure form, but there were two problems. I was from out of state, and they had just started using a new computer system that split us up instead of treating us as a family,” Mary said. “It was a nightmare. Jen and I were both calling the county twice a week. Things started falling into line when Jen was able to consolidate our information, and we finally got confirmation of insurance in July.” Health care is one of many doors that are opening for the family. Peter is becoming more outgoing, even performing in school plays. Christian is doing well in school and exploring athletics. Jo, who has been wrestling on her high school’s team, will graduate in June. And for Mary, life is no longer a constant struggle. “I battled for so many years that I just got into that mode,” she said. “But with The Arc, I don’t have to go it alone. I have more freedom and less worry. It’s brought a sense of peace into my life.” 2 OPENING DOORS TO A GOOD LIFE THE ARC 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 3 Opening Doors to a Good Life The Door to Education Education is a crucial door to any child’s future, but that door sometimes looks like a barrier to parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When school is a concern, many parents turn to The Arc Greater Twin Cities. Susan contacted The Arc when the school district wanted to transfer her daughter Chloe to a different school. “That would have been hard for our family and denied Chloe the opportunity to be in school with her sisters and friends,” Susan said. With The Arc’s help, Susan was able to keep Chloe in her neighborhood school. Since then, she has continued to work with her Arc advocate, Jacki, gaining skills and knowledge of her own. “I need to be the strongest advocate I can be,” Susan said. “I’m not an education expert, but I know my daughter, and I want her to have the best that the school can provide. “Jacki has been a great coach,” she continued. “She’s very knowledgeable about education, and she can be objective when issues are emotional for me.” Inclusion is now Susan’s main goal. “I believe Chloe benefits from being with her classmates, even as the curriculum accelerates. And I believe there’s value to the other students in having Chloe in the classroom.” She added, “I don’t need to defend her right to be in the classroom. That’s already been done. Instead, I want to take the offense in approaching her opportunities. It’s not ‘I don’t want that.’ It’s ‘I do want this.’ That makes it a totally different conversation.” In the end, it’s all about Chloe’s future. “Chloe has dreams like anybody else,” said Susan. “I would love to have people see her for what she can do rather than what she can’t, because she can do a lot.” 4 OPENING DOORS TO A GOOD LIFE THE ARC 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 5 Opening Doors to a Good Life The Door to Independence There are many doors to an independent life for an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability – employment, housing, social connections and other crucial elements. Sometimes finding the key to one door can make all the difference. Mike and Linda first connected with The Arc Greater Twin Cities about four years ago for help planning the future with their son Tony, who has Asperger’s syndrome. One of their goals was finding a place for Tony to live outside their home. Then the family’s world turned upside down when Linda passed away unexpectedly. The loss was very hard for Tony, and after a memorial service for his mother in October, he went into an emotional downward spiral that led to his hospitalization. “We needed to figure out what would happen when Tony got out of the hospital, because he was pretty unhappy,” Mike said. Mike turned to The Arc. His advocate, Brad, immediately began working to get county services and housing for Tony. The intensive effort paid off: in December, Tony moved into an apartment with onsite staff support. “A lot happened in those two months, and Brad was in the middle of it,” Mike said. Today, Tony is a happy person. He loves his new apartment and the support staff who work with him. “It’s been a 180 degree turnaround,” said Mike. Mike said that The Arc was instrumental in that turnaround. “Working with an experienced advocate helped us reach this good ending,” he said. “Brad gave me confidence that we would find a solution, and that confidence got us through some tough times. Now Tony is happy and looking forward to the future. “I think we’re at the beginning of this journey with The Arc, not the end of it,” he said. 6 OPENING DOORS TO A GOOD LIFE THE ARC 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 7 Serving the Community Abuse Prevention and Awareness Training for adults with disabilities, family members, professionals and first responders on recognizing, preventing and responding to abuse, plus a wealth of resources. The 2014 Arc Gala, A Place to Call Home, raised $156,682 specifically for housing-related programs and services through its Fund-A-Need appeal. One major effort accomplished with this generous support was a series of housing conferences to explore innovative housing solutions as a community. Creative Housing: Bringing the Pieces Together featured information ranging from finance to support services to roommates for people at all stages of their housing search. Through the conference and other support from The Arc Greater Twin Cities, nearly 600 people were connected with critical housing resources. Thanks to sponsors, donors and guests of the 2014 Arc Gala, adults with disabilities and their families have more resources to help turn the dream of a home into reality. 18 OPENING DOORS TO A GOOD LIFE THE ARC 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 19 SP EC I A L O C CA S ION G IF T S In Honor Of - Ryan Anderson Pascual Laura Beth Landy by: Vivian Brody Donald & Cathy Hinze - Michael & Dianne Chehoski - James McAlister - Linda Bennett - Steve Piekarski - Roger & Marilyn Israel - Jane & Thomas Chenoweth - Nancy McInnis - Patricia & Dwight Benoy - Deb Reisner by Deerhaven Homeowners Association by Beatrice Sieber The Arc Greater Twin Cities Board by Kim Keprios & John Everett: - Mary Ann Corbey - Jennifer & Cory McIntyre - Alice & Don Blystone - Darla & Vincent Cruz - Richard Minday - Jacki & Steve Bolen - Carol Dahlquist - Nancy & David Meyer - Julia Brucker - Maureen Dalnes - Sara & Damian Moran - Kathleen Couture - Camille Gallagher - Ann Mueller - Kevyn DeRuyter - Teresa & Steven Glasser - Sharon Mulé - Jill Dubis - Mr. & Mrs. Roy Myers - Janet Ekern & Dave Robinson - Suzanne Nelson - Peter & Kathleen Gleich - Amy Pakhomov - Laurie Howard - Kristina & Michael Pokrandt - Joanne Husby - Sungyun Roh - Marianne Lind - Melissa Simon - Kay Nelson - Larry Smith - William & Beth O’Connor - Yuan Tang - Dennis O’Hearn - Michelle & David Theisen - Laurelle Pearson - Kim & Michael Ury - Barbara & James Peterson - Stacey & Duane Vogele - Carolyn & Michael Pilney - Michael & Maria Westfall - Richfield Baptist Church - Patricia Wright - Doris & George Root - Mike Carey - Barb Davis - Ellen Catlin Donnelly - Debbi Harris - John Hetterick - Amy Hewitt - Spencer Johnson - Lisette Schlosser - Wendy Watson - by Stephanie Mann - Allycia Wolff Arc’s Value Village Brooklyn Center by Camden Quist - Laura Beth Landy by Geri Bothum - Shawn Monaghan Guthrie Byard by: - Blake Kelly - Eduardo Montes Pam Carlson by: - Heidi Myhre - Joni Bloom - Tim O’Brien Barb Davis by: - John Peirson - Kelley Lindquist - Kyle Rolfing - Cydney Strommen - May Thao by Tim & Kim Loesch Michael Mann George Arneson - Tim Loesch Olivia Loesch - Karen Sebesta - Peter King - Heidi Larson Dean & Candy Davis by Megan Davis Annie McKee by Andrea & William McKee Marianne Reich by: - Beth Fondell & Chuck Shreffler - Lisette Schlosser & Peg Bauwens - Paris Gatlin by Washburn Center for Children - Janet Glaser Jen Daulman Johnson by: - Mitch Gunderson-Palmer - Morgan Zimmerman - Brad Hansen - Laurel Hansen - Paul Harder Kevin Johnson by James Mickus by Judith M. Arc’s Value Village is in their neighborhoods, it’s well-organized, they can bring their kids with them, and they feel like they’re making an impact close to the home front. We’ve also been honored to support Arc Value Village with more than $14,000 in Comcast Cares Day Foundation grants since 2008. It’s a very nurturing organization that gives back to the community; a great place for opportunity and self-discovery.” Wendell Paulson Audrey Stein John Pechelunas Kathy Steinmetz Tino Peltier Alicia Stewart Diane Petersen Judith Stitt Jerico Pfremmer Marge Stresemann Adriene Thornton*, Children’s Hospitals Mary Pierson Beverly Strombeck and Clinics of Minnesota Sharon Pitkin Carol Studenski —Alexander Pham Christine Polis David Sullivan Margarete Prawdzik Carol Teders Naomi Prosper Patricia Theis Kirsten Punch* Alexis Thompson Marilyn Rabasco Doris Thorson Nita Raquet Verna Thurs Roberta Reberts Angel Toro Noah Reisner Fran Trueman Julie Repinski Richard Tutewohl Ramona Romero Myrtle Tyra Sharon Ronning Samantha Vang Diane Rooney Zoua Pa Vang Eric Rosengren Debra Vavra Eileen Rosenthal Rich Vosepka* Jules Rosenthal Brian Walsh Karen Rubey Beatrice Willert Lois Rue Sheila Wise* Kathy Sandahl Gerald Wobschall* Mary Sanford Mary Wojciak Chad Schaschl Suzanne Wright Sharon Schaschl Amanda Ylvisaker Janice Farley Erich Hoffmann Betty Krause Donald Fern* Laurie Holcomb Ruth Kunze Jean Finch Dana Holmes Donna LaBossiere* Gloria Finneman Dennis Hove Joan Lester Julie Fletcher Fran Howley Alex Lindblad Sandy Flom Carol Hunting Margaret Lohr Georgina Frana Gianna Ianos Sandy Loney Jon Froid Darlene Irwin Sandra Lonsky Frances Gandy Anna James Xia Lor Rachel Gaynor Celia Jarmon Kathleen Lucas Jane Gillen Nancy Jax Donna Madera Karen Gregory Gladys Jepson Susan Malakowski Sarah Guezmir Alice Johnson Bill Malmo Aaron Hansen Ruth Johnson Bridget Malone Markell Hapka Mary Kaasa Erik Marschel Mary Harrington Sharon Kane Lois Mattheisen Kathy Hartman Dodie Keprios Estelle Mauer* Dewey Hassig Rebecca Key Donna Mayotte Ruth Hauge Joe Kimmes* Nancy McCarty Connie Helppi Jean Kinney Elizabeth McDaniel Thomas Hendrickson Courtney Klemp Molly McGinty Frances Hey Eric Knoblauch Alice McMartin Gail Hill Mary Ann Knoss Sandra Menke John Hill Elouise Koenig Kara Moody Margaret Hoenack Jeffry Koepp Nancy Nagle OPENING DOORS TO A GOOD LIFE Amy Hewitt*, Institute on Community Integration Cydney Strommen, Fast Horse, Inc.
