Patient navigators provide a trusted resource dedicated to the
needs of patients from pre-diagnosis to survivorship. Navigators
offer assistance with a wide range of tasks, eliminating many
stresses related to everyday aspects of treatment, such as finding
transportation to appointments, exploring financial aid options,

The Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center is home to the Big Bend’s
most powerfully focused cancer-killing device, the Novalis Tx Linear
Accelerator with RapidArc technology, delivering radiation with submillimeter precision and minimal side effects. It is now operational
along with two Clinac iX Linear Accelerators that can be customized
to meet the specific needs of each treatment site. This leading-edge
technology is designed to readily adapt to future technological
advances.
“This new facility offers the Tallahassee community technology that
hasn’t been available in this area – or for that matter, hasn’t been
available in much of the country,” said Philip V. Sharp, M.D., Medical
Director of Radiation Oncology at Tallahassee Memorial.
Powerful Team
“Our advanced systems and treatment techniques help equip
cancer patients with an unparalleled arsenal of care options in the
Big Bend area. Having the most experienced Tallahassee medical
personnel to guide new cancer patients through the system is an
equally important part of treatment,” said Shelileah Newman, M.D.,
radiation oncologist. “At the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center,
our compassionate team of physicians, nurses, patient navigators
and other health care professionals accompany each patient on the
journey to survivorship.”
TMH physicians operate as a team to provide multidisciplinary
collaborative care for each and every patient. On a weekly basis, they
meet in a conference-style setting to discuss the plan of care for each
patient. Since TMH is an affiliate of the Moffitt Cancer Center, the
TMH multidisciplinary team has the ability to access Moffitt medical
staff members via web conferencing. “We will continue to stress
multidisciplinary care. Being able to sit down and discuss patient care
on a regular basis is part of what we do that gives the best possible
care for the patient,” said Dale Wickstrum, M.D., radiation oncologist.
In a Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center treatment vault, physicians and staff
proudly unveil one of the newly acquired Varian Clinac iX Linear Accelerators.

scheduling appointments and facilitating communication with
physicians and other providers. “The goal of the entire cancer care
team is to be an ever-present source of support for the patient,”
explained Judy Welch, R.N., Nurse Navigator.

hospital cancer program in Florida, the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer
Center has persistently pursued advancements in cancer care. We
have an outstanding team in place and we are pleased to bring our
patients even more leading-edge technologies,” said Mark O’Bryant,

Powerful Philanthropy
The Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center Fund-Raising Steering

HealthCare Foundation, has taken the lead in securing philanthropic

support for the Cancer Center. Its co-chairs are Claude Walker and
Jim Messer, both Trustees of the TMH Foundation.
TMH Foundation President & CEO Paula Fortunas described the
goals of the committee and how it was organized. “Appointed in
October 2006, the Cancer Center Fund-Raising Steering Committee’s
membership comprises men and women who have experienced the
ravages of cancer – either personally or within their respective families
and circles of friends and associates. Each committee member has the
‘passion credential,’ the zeal to fight cancer for all they are worth.”
Claude Walker, who lost his first wife Sharon Ewing Walker to cancer,
said, “When I was taking Sharon for treatments at the Moffitt Cancer
Center in Tampa, I realized that a multidisciplinary cancer center was
needed in Tallahassee. We first worked with the TMH Foundation to
raise funds for digital mammography and the creation of the Sharon
Ewing Walker Breast Health Center and now I am honored to continue
those initial fund-raising efforts.”
The Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center’s Healing Garden was planned by
the building’s designers. However, the members of the Tallahassee Garden
Club and its Circles have lovingly adopted it and spearheaded fund-raising
activity. Pictured here from left to right are Club members and supporters,

Jim Messer’s mother lost her life to breast cancer at age 53 and his
son was diagnosed with cancer at age 19. It was during their son’s
cancer treatment at TMH that Jim and Laurye Messer were inspired
to begin raising donations for the new cancer center. According to
Mr. Messer, “It is a way to reconfirm TMH as a beacon of health
care in the community.”
The Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center is a testament to the
personal philanthropy and commitment of the Boards of the Hospital
and Foundation, the Fund-Raising Steering Committee, the Patient
and Family Advisory Council, the medical and nursing teams and
TMH colleagues. “The entire TMH community of donors deserves
enormous credit and high praise for this remarkable fund-raising
success,” noted Mrs. Fortunas. “However, as we celebrate the opening
of the new Cancer Center and enjoy the sense of accomplishment,
recognition of our progressive fund-raising responsibility is an
imperative. It is essential that the philanthropic mission mirror the
vibrancy of the Cancer Center – its activity will set the standard.”

In its twenty-eighth year, Tallahassee Memorial’s Golden Gala continues to hold
its place as the region’s premier charitable event. “Over its remarkable history,
Golden Gala has generated millions of dollars for the benefit of Tallahassee
Memorial and the positive influence of those gifts is evidenced throughout the
hospital,” said Paula Fortunas, President & CEO of the TMH Foundation.
Traditionally, Golden Gala guests have enjoyed the performance from their
dinner tables. This year, following dinner, guests will relocate to what is styled
as an “intimate concert setting” where no guest will be more than 30 feet away from the stage with the first four rows being at stage
level. Club seating and Suite seating are also available. “We anticipate heightened audience satisfaction with this arrangement,” noted
Mark O’Bryant, President & CEO of Tallahassee Memorial. “With Harry Connick, Jr. as the star, this promises to be among the best ever

Harry Connick, Jr. grew up in New Orleans and that is where you
will find the roots of his love for music and performing. Golden
Gala XXVIII will reflect and embrace that Crescent City heritage.
Harry Connick, Jr.’s career is studded with awards and
recognitions, including multi-platinum and gold albums, Grammy
and Emmy awards, a starring role in a Tony-winning Broadway
musical and much more. A true American icon, there are few
artists of his stature, and fewer still with a career that spans the
entire entertainment realm.
In the world of contemporary entertainment, Harry Connick, Jr. exercises a creative energy that is undeniably unique. Despite
the stunning pace of his work and the extent of his accomplishments, Harry is still finding new ways to express himself
artistically. “Right now, I’m just taking my time to keep learning my craft,” he says.
Harry quickly acknowledges that none of his work has been more important than his unstinting efforts to help his hometown
and the entire Gulf region recover from the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. One of the first to visit displaced
citizens, Harry was named Honorary Chairman of New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity’s Operation Home Delivery in
September 2005. Together with his friend Branford Marsalis, Harry conceived the Musicians’ Village, a community in the
Upper Ninth Ward for musicians and other qualifying homeowner families, as well as the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music,
a performance, instruction and recording center.
His accomplishments speak for themselves: endless accolades in the music, film, television, and theater worlds; and a
growing profile as a responsive public citizen who is making a significant difference. There simply is no stopping the marvel
