Star-Spangled Banner
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

History of the Northfield Area Veterans Memorial
The Northfield Area Veterans Memorial stands as a tribute not only to the
veterans it honors, but also to the years of dedicated effort on the part of the
volunteer leaders, committee members and others who have worked tirelessly
to make the Memorial a reality.
The idea of a Veterans Memorial recognizing the sacrifices and service of the
men and women of the greater Northfield community had been a dream of
many Northfield veterans for years. In November 1998, the local posts of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion voted to approve the concept of establishing a Memorial. A Veterans Park Committee was formed to
develop a plan and enlist community support. By May 1999, the committee
was ready to formally request the involvement of the City of Northfield, which
responded with a resolution in December 1999, establishing the Veterans Memorial Trust Fund for the sole purpose of accumulating and investing contributions to support the project.
In February 2000, the committee met with the Northfield Park and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) to begin the long process of dedicating city
park land to the Memorial project. Over the next two years, the committee
engaged designer Jeff Anderson, and worked with the PRAB to identify a site
for the Memorial on the west side of the Cannon River. By late 2003, however,
Riverside Lions Park was identified as an alternative site. With the support of
the Northfield Lions Club, a request was made to the PRAB and eventually to
the City Council to officially designate a portion of the park to the Northfield
Area Veterans Memorial.
In October 2003 an effort was launched to solicit contributions to support
individually engraved paving stones honoring veterans from the Revolutionary War to the present from any branch of the military. The initial response to
the paving stone purchase program was very successful. By the end of October
2005, more than 850 paving stones had been purchased. Based on the success of the paving stone purchase program, community fund-raising began in
earnest. Members of the planning committee solicited contributions from area
businesses and service clubs, as well as individual donors.
The Memorial was designed as a living tribute, with additional space for paving stones honoring any veteran of the United States military.
While the fund-raising effort was under way, work on the Memorial design
continued. The general site plan and a detailed presentation of the elements
of the Memorial were completed in early 2005, and construction began with a
groundbreaking ceremony on Memorial Day, May 30, 2005. There are plans
to add additional components to the Memorial as the funds become available.

Chronology of the Major U.S. Wars and Conflicts
The history of military actions by the armed forces of the United States of America
shows hundreds of instances of involvement both abroad and within the continental limits of the United States and its territories. These wars and conflicts have
always meant sacrifice for the military servicemen and -women put in harm’s way.
Those of us who enjoy the benefits and whose freedoms are secured because of these
actions are grateful.
American Revolutionary War: 1775–1783
The American Revolutionary War marked the separation of thirteen British
colonies from their parent country, Great Britain. The conflict resulted in the
establishment of the United States of America, which the British formally
recognized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
War o 1812: 1812–1815
The War of 1812 was a conflict fought on land in North America and at sea
around the world between the United States and the United Kingdom from
1812 to 1815. Much of the fighting took place on land that is now part of
Canada, although British invasions of United States territory included the
burning of Washington, DC. The Treaty of Ghent (ratified in 1815) restored
the status quo ante bellum between the combatants.
United States Civil War: 1861–1865
The United States Civil War divided the nation into two distinct sides: the
Union, made up of 23 (mostly northern) states, and the Confederate States of
America, which consisted of 11 southern states. At the heart of this war were
two competing visions of the state and federal roles in making and enforcing
a variety of social and economic policies. More Americans died in this war
than any other.
Spanish-American War: 1898
The Spanish-American War was fought in a number of theaters including
Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and ended with the United States
establishing territories and protectorates in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
World War I: 1914–1918
World War I, also known as the Great War, changed the map of Europe
dramatically, shattering the German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and
6
Russian empires. The United States was drawn into the war in 1917, sending
nearly 4.5 million troops, more than 360,000 of whom were killed, wounded
or missing in action.
World War II: 1941–1945
World War II burst into flame from the smoldering fire of the Treaty of
Versailles that officially ended the first World War. Fueling the fire was the
rise of Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers Party. Following the
surprise assault on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, the United States formally
entered the war in 1941 and led the Allied forces until achieving victory
against the Germans in May 1945 and the Japanese in August 1945.
Korean War: 1950–1953
The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea and South Korea that
took place during the Cold War era. During this time, the United States,
along with Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, supported South
Korea.
Vietnam War: 1964–1973
Like the Korean War, the Vietnam War was an expression of Cold War tensions. The conflict engaged the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRVN, or
North Vietnam), allied with the National Liberation Front (NLF, or “Viet
Cong”), against the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, or South Vietnam) and its
allies. The United States military committed American combat troops from
1965 to 1972.
Persian Gul War: 1991
The Persian Gulf War, sometimes known as Operation Desert Storm, was
a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force of 34 nations mandated by the
United Nations and led by the United States.
Ira War: 2003–
The Iraq War is a conflict between the Iraqi military of Saddam Hussein and
a coalition of multinational forces led by the United States and the United
Kingdom. Following the fall of Hussein, the conflict has continued with the
emergence of a wide range of insurgent groups opposed to coalition forces.

Branches of Military Service o the United States
The Northfield Area Veterans Memorial honors veterans who served in any
of the six major branches of the United States military. Six large granite tablets
highlighting the official seals pay tribute to the unique history and special
responsibilities of each branch.
United States Army
Established by the Continental Congress in 1775, the United States Army’s
mission is to fight and win our nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained
land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of
conflicts in support of combatant commanders.
United States Navy
The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the
Continental Congress established during the American Revolutionary War.
The United States Constitution, ratified in 1789, empowered Congress “to
provide and maintain a navy,” which today consists of nearly 300 ships and
over 4,000 aircraft. It has over a half million men and women on active or
ready reserve duty.
United States Marine Corps
The first Marines were commissioned by the Continental Congress in 1775,
and were charged with acting as the landing force in advance of the naval
fleet. Serving on land, at sea and in the air, Marines have acted with valor in
virtually every major military action in our nation’s history.
8
United States Air Force
From its origin in 1907 as the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Army Signal
Corps, to its formal establishment as an independent military branch, the
United States Air Force’s mission is to defend the United States and
protect its interests through air and space power.
United States Coast Guard
The United States Coast Guard, established in 1790, is a military, multi-mission, maritime service. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment,
and U.S. economic and security interests in any maritime region in which
those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America’s
coasts, ports and inland waterways.
United States Merchant Marine
The United States Merchant Marine traces its history to 1775, and is comprised of a fleet of ships used to transport both imports and exports. This
civilian, commercial fleet serves as an auxiliary to the United States Navy
during times of war, when its mariners are considered military personnel and
are tasked with delivering both troops and supplies.
9
Elements of the Memorial
The Northfield Area Veterans Memorial was designed by Jeff Anderson of
Anderson Memorials, Inc. in Austin, Minnesota. The design places a series
of symbolic elements around a central plaza. Two long, perpendicular walkways, connected by arching interior walkways, are lined with engraved paving
stones honoring individual veterans from all branches of the United States
military, and from many of the wars and conflicts of American military
history.
The elements of the monument include three graceful spires representing
three stages of American military history: the effort to gain our own freedom;
the struggle to maintain our national unity and the freedom of all citizens;
and the effort to defend and protect the freedom of others. At 21 feet, the
tallest spire symbolizes the 21-Gun-Salute, an honor accorded to Presidents,
military leaders, foreign dignitaries and fallen soldiers.
A mounted bell is a call to order — a reminder of the willingness of those
who serve in the United States military to step forward into harm’s way when
the nation calls. The tolling bell is also a call to commemorate a special event
or to signify a special honor. Its chime reminds us of the sacrifices we honor
with this memorial.
The bell mounted in the spires of the Northfield Area Veterans Memorial has
a rich Northfield history. First used in the Southern steam locomotive line
that ran from Minneapolis to Northfield, it was donated for use in the Peace
Garden attached to the Schilling Museum. When the museum closed, it was
acquired by the Machacek family and donated to the memorial in memory of
World War II veteran, Marilyn Christie Machacek.
Six vertical stone tablets pay tribute to each of the six branches of the United
States military: United States Army, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard and United
States Merchant Marine.
Stone tablets also provide a Wall of Honor memorializing men and women
who have given their lives during war time, recognizing the suffering and
sacrifice of men and women who were prisoners of war or who are missing
in action, and listing the major wars and conflicts in which the United States
has engaged. A statue of a soldier, marching home from war, gazes straight
ahead, haunted by memories of war. Greeting him are five flags: the flags
of the United States of America, the State of Minnesota, POWs/MIAs, the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
The paved walkways, spires, standing tablets, flags and statue are set in a large,
grassy knoll in Riverside Lions Park in Northfield.

Wall of Honor
Over its 150-year history, Northfield has lost 112 of its own in times of war. These brave veterans have answered their
nation’s call and made the ultimate sacrifice. We respect their courage, salute their service and honor their memory.

Veterans o the Odd Fellows Home
The Odd Fellows Home was located on the west side of Northfield, on the site now occupied by the Three Links
Care Center campus. Built in 1899 on the farm of Josiah Nutting, the Odd Fellows Home housed children and elderly. Between 1901, when the first child arrived, and 1956, when the last child left, more than 500 children lived at
the home. Over the years, many of the Odd Fellows orphans answered the call to military service. We apologize that
for some, the records of their military service are incomplete. As a community, we are pleased to honor these young
men and women whom we embrace as our own.
