The centre was the brainchild of legendary Beatles’ producer Sir George Martin, who raised money for its construction. The Montserrat Cultural Centre is now the only large, public building for the people of Montserrat, following the burial of the capital city, Plymouth. The multi-purpose venue contains auditorium seating, a proscenium stage, a cinema screen, conference rooms, exhibition spaces and refreshment facilities. During the 1980s, Sir George set up AIR Studios on Montserrat, where artists including The Police, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Eric Clapton recorded albums. The studios were closed after hurricane damage in 1989, but Sir George had retained strong links with Montserrat, where he still has a house. Following the first volcanic eruptions, he began fundraising efforts to the help the islanders. These included a concert at the Royal Albert Hall and the sale of limited edition lithographs of Yesterday, signed by Sir George and Sir Paul McCartney.
