meet
the
challenge of educating Philadelphia’s leaders of tomorrow.
THE IMPACT OF PARTNERSHIP: CHANGING LIVES
Summer 2013: Four brave students from Martin Luther King (MLK) High School took a
step outside of their comfort zone and onto a course that they would remember forever.
Khalil, Rhashon, Keon and Nicko (pictured right) are seniors at MLK high school. Rival
high schools Germantown and MLK merged in 2013 due to school closings, and the
schools’ leadership enlisted POBS to develop a program for the students to ease the difficult transition.
The young men participated in a 6-week POBS summer intensive leadership pro-
gram followed by a 5-day backpacking expedition to prepare them to be leaders at school
during a tumultuous time. They each learned that there is more in them then they thought.
Rashon said of his course and instructors:
“No one has ever believed in me…for that long… to see me
from the beginning to end. I will encourage [my peers] to be a
part of Outward Bound and experience the natural things that I
had never experienced.”
Each of these students courageously took the 31-story rappel in Building Adventure 2013
and continue to use their newly developed leadership skills to inspire their students,
schools and communities.
THE OUTWARD BOUND DIFFERENCE:
Our mission is to change lives through challenge and discovery. We understand that those changed lives and the ripple effects they create are
what help our students, classrooms, schools and communities evolve, grow
and succeed. Sponsors like you help us to make these experience a reality
for thousands of other students, veterans and bereaved families.
Join us in making our city
a better place by becoming a
Building Adventure 2014
event sponsor!
100% of our students improved their
teamwork, self-confidence + self-esteem.
